The seven-day instant European heat death study — who needs data? Just model it!

By Jo Nova

Burn more oil and coal, save lives and never ever apologize

It’s been a hot ten days in Europe and the Blob-Propaganda Machine is running full tilt. A rapid “analysis” invented a number of excess deaths faster than junk science has ever been done before. So teeth can be gnashed appropriately, never mind about peer-review, who needs that? Thus, extreme heat was said to have killed 2,305 people across 12 cities  — 2,305! And with Coupled Voodoo Models we can “show” two thirds of those deaths were because of fossil fuels and “Climate ChangeTM“! This study, note, has not even been published, it can’t be using real data from the event “seven days prior” (June 23 to July 2, 2025) because that won’t be published for weeks or months. It’s all guesstimated from past deaths in other years.

One *handy* thing about rapid analysis like this is that it’s also “too fast” to see if the excess deaths were followed by a lower death rebound, which often happens after heat-waves.  A few hot days in a row generally take those who are about to die in the next six weeks anyway, so after the peak, comes the drop. It’s rather darkly known as harvesting future deaths. Good studies use at least a 21 day lag, but crass publicity-science-stunts don’t even wait 21 days to hit the news stands. Maybe they “guessed” that too in the assumptions? Who can tell? Maybe they’ll add it in and adjust the numbers later — after the media hype?

The Grantham Institute at least has a PDF paper out for a UK heat wave they forecast would kill 570 people last month. (And at least that was called a “forecast” so everyone knew they were just guessing).

Of course, if the sole purpose of junk-science-academia is to promote government tax and spending plans, then we wouldn’t want to do a careful analysis and find that 1,500 people weren’t really excess deaths we could blame on fossil fuel induced warming, or that by the same reasoning probably 15,000 Europeans were saved last winter. Shh!

The complete sell out of university and legacy-media is there for all to see. All it takes is for one professor, or one journalist to do five minutes of research (or a read a blogger for free) and show what we all know — that if global warming kills anyone in summer, by the same reasoning it would save ten every winter. Around the world Global warming saves 166,000 lives a year. (Zhao et al).  Where are the headlines for the people the Greens don’t care if they kill in winter each year?

Media bias, extreme heat.

Climate Change saves ten times as many lives every winter

It’s rare in medical science to have unequivocal research. But this is one of those moments. Studies of 74 million people show the same pattern everywhere; in terms of the climate nothing is more deadly to humans than winter. (See Gasparrini et al).  For every summer heat wave death, at least 6, 10 or even 20 people die due to cold weather in winter. The largest study across 13 countries found cold deaths were twenty times more common than heat deaths. Look at the scary blue bars below, it’s moderate cold coming to get you!

In richer European cities, with gas stoves and coal fired power stations *only* ten times as many people will die of the cold. (Mazzelot et al)  Even in warm sunny Brisbane, Australia, six times as many people die in mild cold weather as in the heat of summer.  (Cheng et al).

The Lancet was so desperate to whip up alarm, they stooped to stretching half the axis to make the pitiful few heat deaths look worse.

Remember this graph? The one on the left made it through peer-review and expanded deaths on the “warm” side. The graph on the right is the real proportion of cold deaths to warm ones.  And the Lancet published the big 74 million deaths study in 2015. They knew. They knew!

Lancet distorts x-axis to pretend heat deaths are just as bad as cold deaths.

Thanks to Patrick Moore https://twitter.com/EcoSenseNow

In reality, man-made climate change probably killed no one, but fossil fuels made life possible for 500 million people in Europe all year round. The icing on the cake of civilization is that airconditioners save 20,000 lives in USA each year (as long as you can afford to run them). As it got hotter in Spain last century, less people died. Thank air conditioning and electricity.

Cold is a killer but warmth is a life-giver and Civilisation loves warmth as the naturally warm Minoan, Egyptian, Roman and Medieval climate optima, when Civilisation thrived, showed us.

And unless going somewhere for winter sports, or a “climate scientist” going on a taxpayer-funded adventure holiday to the poles, people love vacationing in warm places, not cold.

      Yep

Everything about the climate scare is the opposite of reality.

      1. CO2 is not pollution, it is the stuff of life. More CO2 is a boon to all life on earth. PLants literally eat the stuff, and animals love it too since plants are at the bottom of the food chain.

      2. A warmer atmosphere is not something to fear. It’s something to celebrate. It is a net benefit in terms of temperature deaths, crop yields, biodiversity, and darn near everything else.

      3. Natural disasters are not something to fret about. Mankind has shown that it is EXTREMELY well-adapted to mitigating natural disaster deaths, which is why they have declined 99% over the last century or so. If we didn’t love building on beachfront property and flood plains and in secluded wooded areas so much, natural disasters wouldn’t be a concern at all (except for people who live on low-lying islands).

The Church of Climate Catastrophe has become a crooked cult, supported by so many bad actors and so many ignorant but useful idiots at every level of society up to and including film stars and politicians – show biz for ugly people.
If only we had honest media keeping the crooks honest.

Wadda Ya mean; “become” a crooked cult.

It was cooked at launch.. carefully planned “catastrophist fiction.

Remember the 1970’s when we were all going to freeze on a planetary snowball?

      Rudimentary fearmongering.

It is ALL “science”, of course.

Just as economics is known as “the dismal science”, so should “climate” science be clearly labeled, POLITICAL “SCIENCE”.

Easy to lie with statistics on timelines. Just adjust your starting point for your analysis and you can prove either a negative or a positive outcome to suit your theory.

As we also heard this week, what sort of respite do people get when they can have three heat waves in four weeks? And presumably three endless droughts.
Does no one care about the Polar bears?

And no one should turn on their air conditioners for fear of making things much worse!

Some of use have to put up with daylight savings in the hottest part of the year, to give us an extra of daylight at the end of the day and save a little bit of electricity by not needing the lights turned on as early. But, along with the extra hour of daylight, maximum temperatures also occur an hour later in the day, so the air conditioner is also needed an hour later, and the Aircon uses way more electricity than a few lights

Even if you buy into the Co2 theory, the fact that only 3-4% of ’emissions’ is attributable to human activity, means less than 100 of those deaths could possibly be our fault. Not statistically significant. Not even plausible. Not even worth the ink.

    252

But Gary, have you no compassion for those poor souls, slaving over another hot [of course!] model, whose job, whose pension and glitzy conference attendance and simple happiness depends on tuning the ‘new’ model to produce ‘even worse than we thought’ outcomes? You know – ‘La Paz will be underwater by next April, unless we revert to the Stone Age’ …

Have you no feelings for their spouse, left lonely at home whilst the bread-, and polenta- and bug-steak-, provider braves unimaginable hazards to get to the internet and work on the model?

Do you not care for their offspring, young, impressionable, hungry (bug-steaks are not filling!), ill-clad [in kit from Tesco rather than a poncy Italian brand], and needing IPhone 43s as soon as they come out?

All this is at risk if you call it ‘A load of industrial-grade Twaddle’ – even if it is!

The point of this ‘study’ is not that it it factual, not that people are dying from man made heat waves or that any problem is unusual or human caused. The point is to keep such fake news on the front page, supporting a world wide attack on fossil fuels and literally undermining the power base of the Western democracies. It’s what you do in war.

At the same time there is a real government effort to keep human disasters from uncontrolled mass migration off the front pages. In the UK one woman is in jail for three years for a comment on social media. Her problem is that the comment was very popular and so incitement to riot.

This all supports the UN and WEF agenda, the George Soros attack on democracy by undermining Christianity and cheap energy, the quality of life power base. Discord, unhappiness, strife, social conflict are what have powered every revolution and brought the Communist/Fascist disasters of the twentieth century. Now they are simultaneously and massively ramping up the anti Semitism, especially in Australia. None of this is accidental or coincidence. Like the Greens, even Grumpy Greta Thunberg is part of it. There is nothing ecological about hating Jews.

Thanks again to Jo for showing us that moderate cold is by far the biggest killer every year.
Again how does our poorest continent Africa increase their population by over 1 billion people since 1980?
This is a Human population record and easily proves we are living in the best climate for the last 300,000 years.
BTW our global population increased by 3.8 billion over the same period or 4.4 bn in 1980 to 8.2 billion today. When will we stop to think?
This takes only a few minutes to find and understand, so why don’t our so called scientists publish this UN etc data in their studies?
Is it the case that they don’t care about the facts and would rather fall into line and produce more BS and nonsense?

Heard a beauty on the radio yesterday: the all-purpose bogeyman ‘climate change’ was blamed for now “changing river courses” here in the Shaky Isles (NZ) after this winter’s third storm off the Tasman Sea unleashed heavy rain over northern parts of the South Island.

Despite homes, farms, whole towns being built on flood plains (gravel outwash from previous glaciations and/or inundation by the sea) straddled by faultlines with some blocks of land pushed up while others sink down, ie. drowned valleys of the Marlborough Sounds, a little bit of winter rain is the ‘solid proof’ this crisis is of our making.

In earlier times it was an ‘act of God’, or the Devil himself testing the faithful, or maybe just a case of bad weather, yet now in 2025 we are assured it’s all OUR fault due to the latest devil, carbon emissions.

Heat, cold, flood, drought, typhoon, doldrums, night, day, sun, moon: diversity in action, what a planet!

      Yes.

      That’s what rivers do.

If you believe in AGW/ MMCC like Bjorn Lombourg, then fine ( 🤪 ). But even he thinks it’s idiotic to try to “ stop” climate change. Better off being resilient as he advises. Or spending the big bucks on other threats that are more substantial. So, in the extremely low likelihood that climate change causes a net increase in human mortality do something about it. Having a dependable electricity grid that supplies cheap power should be the first item on that priority list. But, what would I know? Better off asking the new head of the federal Dept of Climate Action and Energy in Australia. He’s on an eye watering $900k salary. I’m sure he’ll fix the problem- not.

Here’s the latest on heat versus cold deaths from Bjorn Lomborg and a few graphs to try and explain the difference.
Certainly we are very lucky to live in the 21st century and not the colder LIA period.
And we should never forget that Human life expectancy was about 28.5 years at the start of the Industrial revolution and about 73.4 yrs today and much higher in wealthier OECD countries.

Again, African life expectancy was only 36 years in 1950 and about 64 + years today. See UN etc data.
Population just 227 million in 1950 and over 1500 million today.

        Absolutely.
Nigeria today, with perhaps 235-240 million has more people, more individuals with rights and dreams and needs, than the whole continent [‘from the Cape to Cairo’] did in 1950.

More and more people have got to be fatigued with this gerbil warming BS.

Gerbil warming is apparently the cause of excess deaths in cold OR hot weather, produces more intense and more frequent cyclones, causes transgender transformations, boils oceans, sinks islands, increases illegal immigration, starts wars. etc. etc.
Maybe we can blame gerbil warming for boils that appear on our nether regions.

I have just had delivered my next load of firewood for my one and only log fire that keeps my whole house liveable and me alive when the temperature outside is between 0 and 4 degrees. When will the government ban log fires to save the planet? Interesting to see all the hoi poloi heading past our place in the dividing range up to the mountains for ski season – what was it the man said – “our children wont know what snow is”? He also said something like – “even if it rains – it wont fill our dams” yet they are talking about a billion dollar connector to Tasmania (one already exists in case they forgot), but there was a time when the dams in Tasmania were running out of water and they had to stop using the water to generate electricity. I havent heard of any more dams being built in Tasmania and given the “rain wont fill our dams” it seems there is a lot of twisted thinking out there with those spending our tax dollars!

even research into people dying from the cold has to start with: The third UK Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA3) published in 2020, stated that the burden of ill-health and mortality from cold weather and cold homes remains significant in the UK and is a priority for public health and local government action. Whilst climate change is likely to reduce the level of cold-associated mortality overall, numbers are predicted to remain high until the end of the century, even in the context of gradually warming temperatures.

So we estimate/model deaths due to current “heat waves,” we estimate sea level rises, we estimate temperatures in 100 years and we change the scale on a graph to hide the reality of deaths due to extreme temperatures. So when(if?) they review the number of deaths over the summer when it’s past, will they issue a retraction and say so we were wrong if/when they find their estimated deaths were wrong, or will it just be swept under the carpet and ignored when the time comes? Doesn’t anyone in the MSM even review this BS data manipulation and ask the hard questions? Clearly not. Journalism is a joke nowadays it’s just opinions masquerading as news.

In Central India, the winter night lows were about 8C. With no heating or glazing, people just wrapped up. In Kashmir, men wore huge tent-like garments and held a brazier underneath. Women and children were just blueish or inside around open cooking fires.

Things might be better now, but not to the standard we are used to.
