Oregon: Police seek 11 Republican Senators — in hiding to stop vote on 80% carbon reduction

State troopers have been called in to get Oregon’s Republican senators back to vote on a climate change bill, but all 11 senators are in secret locations apparently interstate. No vote can take place on anything without at least one of those senators being in the chamber to vote.

Oregon Standoff, Eleven Senators in hiding.

Oregon’s Republican state senators go into hiding over climate change vote amid militia threat

ABC News USA.

Eleven Republicans refused to show up to work on Thursday and went into hiding in protest of HB2020, a bill that establishes a carbon cap, in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Industries that emit carbon dioxide — power plants, manufacturers, etc. — would have to buy an “allowance” for each metric ton emitted, thereby reducing the incentive to produce carbon dioxide in the first place.

The goal of the bill is to cut greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050 versus 1990 numbers.

It’s a question of democracy: On the one hand, if Oregonians voted for this draconian cut, they ought get it. On the other, the Republicans are incensed and want a democratic solution — a state wide ballot. The legislation is such a disaster for a large proportion of Oregon’s voters that Republicans feel this is their only option. It’s a version of a filibuster.

So let’s give the people a real debate and a real vote and end the stand off now. What are the democrats afraid of?

Democracy on the rocks:

Why a group of US state senators are being hunted by police

BBC

Democratic Governor Kate Brown then authorised state police to try to locate them.

…petrol and diesel prices are expected to go up. Republicans say these changes will disproportionally affect rural Oregonians, like farm workers and loggers. They argue the plan should be referred to a state-wide ballot so “every Oregonian has a voice”.
Democrats hold 18 of the 30 seats in the state senate, but 20 senators have to be present for a vote to take place.

This is the second time they have recently walked out – winning concessions on gun and vaccination laws after another incident last month.

Other boycotts have also been known to happen elsewhere, including by Wisconsin Democrats in 2011.

The senators are being ordered to pay $500 (£390) each for every day they are absent. An online fundraiser to pay their fines has so far raised almost $38,000 (£30,000) as of Sunday.

Democrats once did a similar thing staging a five day walkout on “redistricting”.
The twitter feed where the action is: @Oregon_GOP.  That twitter account is heavy on sarcasm, calling photos of children and peaceful protesters “heavily armed militia”. Lots of people don’t understand satire, including AOC, who felt the need to yell back “These are people protesting peacefully – hence their POSTERS & not FIREARMS”.
Where were our conservative MP’s? Voting for more.

    Sounds like democracy in action…

Presumably the party whips want them around – to force them to vote for the draconian climate laws?

    Meh.

It sounds like that number of people being absent means the senate doesn’t have a quorum and therefore can’t pass any legislation.

30 Seats in the Oregon Senate
        18 seats held by democrats
        12 seats held by Republicans

The Senate needs 20 for a quorum to conduct any business. They only have 18. Hence no business at all can be conducted and the democrats cannot pass the cap/trade bill.

At least that’s the way I understand the situation.

So, if they do manage to arrest one or more and deliver them to the State Senate, the bill passes whether they vote against it or abstain. I think I can see why they are refusing to attend.
Next question, what good will this bill do?

Next question is what if one of these Republican senators is ‘captured by the [police and refsues to attend the Leislative session ?

Or does a sit down strike in the toilets ?

Well, since Oregon produces 0.7% of the national output of CO2, this bill will do absolutely zilch, zero, nada to reduce the bogeyman gas. We might as well go fart in the wind. However, it will cripple businesses and hopefully break Oregon enough that the citizens would want to fix things. However, I still have my doubts it is bad enough yet.

Oregon is already a lost cause like California. If you’ve ever read or watched videos about Portland Oregon, you’ll see what I mean. Given that the majority of Oregon voters are Democrat; they made their bed and should now lay in it.

I have just read the ABC story on it’s website..
It is of course . ABC propaganda on behalf of the Democrat party’s agenda of stopping fake ‘Global Warming’.
Yet another example of the ABC not being my ABC but in this case bloody foreigners.
It distributing biased news..And does not even know it is being a pawn in the Dimocrats game.
The elected Republican senators were elected to represent the interests of their electorates.
If the Dimocrats are attempting to force through utterly dopey laws, then complete NON COOPERATION is a DUTY of these Republicans.

I drove from Melbourne south east to Traralgon and return between 8:30am and 11:00am. Most of the journey out had road temperature at 1C and much frost on the adjacent fields. Actually it surprised me how stable the temperature was at 1C for almost two hours despite sunshine. On the return, temperature eventually reached 3C.

The recent chill has been good weather for testing our newly installed wood burner. I have started to nibble a small hole in the wood pile I have created over a few years.

I terms of payback, the wood burner will take about 8 years at current gas prices providing I can continue to feed it with wood supplied at no cost other than the effort of collecting, cutting and splitting. I already have a few years stored but it is long way short of what will be needed for 8 years.

I find that I need to burn about 1kg of dry wood per hour to maintain comfortable temperature in TV room and kitchen when outside temperature is in single digits. That equates to about 5kW but wood burner has stated efficiency of 64% so its power output would be around 3kW.

If fully loaded and damper wide open it burns about 4kg per hour and will heat the house but the TV room gets hotter than what is pleasant as it has 3m ceilings and the exposed, but shrouded, flue is in that room.

Add breaks provide the opportunity to throw another log on the fire!!

The plumber who installed the burner said he is now installing more wood burners than gas heaters. That change has been in the last couple of years. He can do two to three installations a day and has a waiting list.

I wonder if industry will ever develop a more efficient means of storing energy than photosynthesis?

Dhimmicrats and Lefties worldwide are chomping at the bit for Socialism (which always goes straight to Communism) that voting against it likely won’t do a thing due to the corruption. The world’s gone completely mad over this Gorebull Warbling racket without any proof except the constantly parroted lie “But all the scientists say blah blah..”. Hopefully one day this nonsense will end and those riding on the coat tails of this lie will be made to pay, or be blown out the airlocks because otherwise they’re useless.

Remember: this is not about “carbon”. Climate is the wedge. Sustainable development comes with unsustainable demographic shocks so that the pesky middle class of aspirationals is both shrunk and replaced. So long as that happens, who cares what gets burnt or wasted?

Universal surveillance and the end of privacy come via a mockery of giant private enterprises so interwoven with the permanent state that nobody can say where one starts and the other stops. Bezos, Amazon, Washington Post and CIA cannot be separated yet no connection is apparent as millions of people spill their lives into this giant maw.

Enormous data gathering and information disseminating agencies pose as “social” media. Hit movies are made about the accidental kid geniuses who act as human fronts for the permanent state’s data monsters. For realism, an impermanent government representative might be allowed to question or even prosecute a Jeff or a Mark. (That should quieten down the Info-warriors for a while!)

Carbon reduction is the new Bolshevism…except it’s really the old Bolshevism. More on Ireland…

meanwhile, over in Wales, in the village of Fairbourne, I just saw two women – Beverly Wilkins & a Sylvia (?) on Sky UK, being quite sceptical about the following, even tho they were being pushed by Sky Sunrise reporter, Sarah-Jane Mee, to accept CAGW was happening and alarming.
Sylvia mentioned how they knew nothing until a BBC researcher turned up on their doorstep after floods in 2014 and said they only had 10 years before their village disappeared.

TWEET: Sarah-Jane Mee, Sky News UK, Sunrise anchor
Tomorrow @SkyNews #Sunrise – as U.K. plans to tackle climate change with legal commitment we ask what hitting carbon net zero by 2050 will require from business, government policy and the public and look at scale of the challenge.

folloeing is not what I saw, but presumably another “A New Climate” piece, different reporter. check how flat Fairbourne is in the pic:

June 2019: Sky News: The fight for Fairbourne
    by Russell Hope, news reporter
But after the sea wall was breached in 2014, Gwynedd County Council announced it could no longer repair the defences indefinitelyand, given the anticipated rise in sea levels, said the village would be “decommissioned”, starting in 2045.
Those living there would have to move out, making them the first people in the UK displaced by the effects of climate change.
Or – the country’s first climate change refugees, as they have been dubbed.
That’s where the fightback began as villagers refused to accept being abandoned…
    Here are their stories.

    The chip shop owner
Alan Jones finds the council’s decision on the village’s future ludicrous.
The 2014 storm, whose overspill preceded the decision, left, he says “one conservatory flooded”.
“How can they predict what’ll happen in 40 or 50 years’ time? They can’t get the weather right for next week,” he adds…

    The farmer
Businesswoman Gemma Evans runs Bwlchgwyn Farm…
Like many residents, she can’t understand why the council has abandoned Fairbourne a matter of years after spending £7m on the sea defences and doesn’t see the need for the huge decision that has been taken.
“If it’s going to go, let it go naturally”…

    Louise Hughes
What does bother her, however, is the “annoying” negative media coverage.
“The only people who get quoted are negative. We never hear about the positive and there’s lots of positivity in the village,” she adds…

    Mike Thrussell
“Over last 100 yrs global sea levels have risen 20cm, yet we’re being told over the next 80-100 years we could see a metre to two metres. It’s not logical, is it?”
Mr Thrussell, who monitors the weather every day for his job, is dismayed at the lack of clarity.
“Everyone has a different opinion. You get one set of statistics from one person and a different one from another,” he says.
“We’ve asked Gwynedd Council for answers but we don’t get good answers, in fact we don’t get answers at all.”…
    The retired broker
Former insurance broker Alan Wilde, 72…
The village, he insists, is not at risk and has suffered only minor flooding since a major breach in the 1940s.
“We were absolutely horrified when we heard what the council had said. House prices fell by 40%. At the time, you couldn’t get a mortgage, you couldn’t even get insurance”…
We’ve had different dates banded around. First it was 2045, then 2046, then it was 2055, then it was 2070 after we proved all their figures wrong. If you have property that’s devastating.
So, does he think the village will eventually be washed away? If it does, he says “it’ll be in 100 to 200 years and by then, Lincolnshire, London, the Somerset Flats will have gone first”…

      Feb 2016: Granta: Fairbourne
      by Adam Weymouth
In January 2014, Britain received its annual battering of storms…
The media storm hit Fairbourne far harder than any of the actual storms did. The BBC’s Week In Week Out came to Fairbourne as part of its coverage of the Welsh floods – in the programme that aired in February 2014, Fairbourne appeared as storm hit as the rest, shots of water in Fairbourne’s fields spliced with shots of the waves flowing along Aberystwyth seafront. Fairbourne residents, sitting down to watch their village on the telly, were informed by the presenter that ‘after 2025, there’ll be no new or improved defences, and by 2055, everyone will have moved out. Deadlines may slip, but the initial assessment is it’s a matter of when, not if, the critical threshold is reached.’ It was the first time they had been told that they would have to abandon their village, and it came as something of a shock…
The (BBC) programme had suggested that the council would walk away from Fairbourne in 2025, but that wasn’t entirely accurate…

But the damage had been done. House prices crashed overnight. One couple due to exchange contracts on their house the next day woke up to find that their buyer had pulled out. Journalists poured into town, looking for the floods. Newsnight came for a follow-up piece. More housing chains collapsed. An estate agent wrote in the local paper that Fairbourne was now blighted…

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicts a sea level rise of between 28cm and 98cm by the end of the century, but the figures used in the SMP2 are taken from the UK Climate Projections 2009 report, a document intended to help decision-makers plan for the future impacts of climate change, and thus factoring a risk-based analysis into the IPCC numbers. They give a projected lower limit of 21cm, whereas the upper limit, worst-case scenario, is 190cm. Such is how risk is dealt with by planners, but the inhabitants of Fairbourne are left feeling that they have been scuppered by nothing more than maths. Describing the figures as alarmist, FFC is now clubbing together to raise money for a barrister who can pursue a compensation claim against the government…READ ON

      By Richard Spillett
Campaigner Pete Cole says the village has been written off due to an ‘aggressive model’ used by planners, which was not used for other areas of the coastline.
He says another forecast concluded that sea levels could be expected to rise around 50cm rather than one metre in the next 100 years and with only a modest 20 to 30cm rise in the next 50 years.
Mr Cole said: ‘We have been hurt by the actions of the agencies who adopted these plans without thinking of the ramifications.’…

So what the villagers need to do is concrete a pole into the rock and mark current low & high tide on it and the year, then 10 years from now, go back and compare the lack of change…then rub the noses of the UN in it….

It will be 100% predictable – no sea level rise.

There would be some people who’ve been walking to the same spots at Coogee over sixty or seventy years and nothing has changed bar a tiny dribble of rise at the most. At low lying Hat Head everything is how it was when I first visited in 1972. Sydney Harbour shows a steady but unimportant rise since the 1800s, with a bit of unexplained leveling around the 1940s. What you get after an LIA.

Menacing sea level rise is a media artifact. Nobody can find it, it only exists as a media artifact. Which means we can relax about sea levels but we should be terrified of the media’s hold on people.

Port Kembla is reasonably close to Coogee in terms of the Australian coastline. According to the BoM sea level project, the sea level rise at Port Kembla is 100mm in the last 30 years. If it continues at that rate. a casual observer might notice a difference after 100 years.

Add GPS measurement to keep tabs on vertical land movement (up/down), too.

Fiji has had to recemtly move/relocate a village because of “sea-level rise.” The island concerned is on the subducting (sinking) side of the western edge of the Pacific sea floor. Other villages on that island will need relocation soon.

It’s begun, the ABC has bought into the UN’s next big scare campaign “GLOBAL EXTINCTION”. Last week I posted that the UN has given up on climate change and is pushing a new terrifying man made problem claiming that 1,000,000 species will become extinct within a decade.

Tonight ABC’s 4 Corners ran a propaganda piece on global extinction and how Australia is the worst country in the world. They are already ignoring logic and science and pushing scare tactics.

For example Victoria’s Leadbeater’s possum population was believed to be down to a few hundred, but now with better monitoring we have identified 1000′s of animals. Things are worse than we thought??????????

‘Conservationists’ are quite insane (mostly due to excessive virtue-signalling). There’s actually no such thing as ‘nature conservation’ as the planet changes and that’s its very nature, and that of life, and of evolution via adaptations, and the nature of the biota is to never remain the same for very long as that would in fact be unhealthy stagnation for the biota.

Given ‘Conservationism’ is thus physically impossible the ever fanatical disciples of Conservationism dress it up within the language of Precautionary Principle, via using faked secondary pseudo-’data’ within cheesy dishonest graphs which show imaginary ‘anomalies’, indicating scary evil change exists on this planet.

          Eeeeeek!

And then they argue that we must sacrifice ourselves, body, soul ‘n wallet, to the imaginary Gaia god of no-change, via doing absolutely nothing whatsoever and whining about the end of the world if we ever do something adaptive and good (i.e. ‘Socialism’, see the Queensland Labor Party for an example).

And thus the planet will be “Precautioned” back into the ‘safety’ of the utterly impossible idealism of no-changes to the planet, at all costs!

          i.e. at your cost … see ‘Socialism’(Proto-Communism).

My wife gets possum fur gloves from NZ so they are good for something.
          https://www.farmonline.com.au/story/3603666/at-125kg-no-wonder-kiwis-love-possums/

Shay has been plucking possums full-time since he was 16; in the past two years he estimates he has knocked-off more than 10,000 of the pests.

“One of the facts that is constantly overlooked is that possums are worth a lot of money. I can pull around 5kg of possum fur a day off my trap lines, which is worth over $600 at the current price.

“Per kilo, possum fur is worth more than sheep wool and cow’s milk put together. The fact that the possum fur industry is still thriving after all the efforts to poison and demonise them is a testament to how valuable the product really is.”

          60

          • #

There’s a real irony here in what Rick Will has written.

The possum was introduced into New Zealand from Australia in 1837, and they are now a (pretty much feral) pest.

Note here that in NZ, they are trapped, killed, skun, and the fur used to make products.

Here in Australia, we are ‘so delicate’ that an introduced feral pest (cats) which is decimating our Native wildlife is caught and ….. relocated.

I sometimes wonder about these animal lovers, you know, if they have ever swatted a fly, or used Aerogard.

            Tony.

If they truly want to save it then all they need to do is reduce it’s protection level and allow commercial breeders to sell them as pets. There will be a population of ten’s of thousands within a few years and they could legislate that a percentage would be returned to the wild.

But no, in Australia we are forced to keep introduced dangerous animals that prey on our natives as pets, while our endangered natives are not allowed to be commercially bred.

          Shear madness.

We in the states perform this kind of political clown show routinely. A few tears ago Wisconsin & Illinois went through the exercise.

This is a problem of political geography. Our states have urban areas, and rural areas. Historically, the cities in a state got their wealth and power from the coalescing of the business of the rural state; Chicago had stockyards fed by downstate agriculture, Minneaoplis had grain milling and terminal fed by the countryside, Michigan had dozens of towns with small manufacturers that were part of the auto industry supply chain, our great port cities and rail hubs served the countryside, & so on.

Over time, the incomes and activities of those ‘downstate’ diverged from the lives of those in the cities. The cities became more focused on on commerce and communication, and a cultural affinity group, far removed from that of the residents of 97% of the state land.

Taxes flowed inward, and regulation but not benefits flowed outward. An impression of disassociation usually lead to perception of corruption as the representatives of the countryside were marginalized. An attitude common to that of the founders: “taxation without representation” arises. The city interferes in traditional local prerogatives: The school curriculum, farming water rights, self-governance on such issues as zoning & land use.

In another era these dissidents might have brought swords to the assembly & had it out. But the victims of urban driven one-party rule in the US will, soon enough, simply migrate, if the exercise of electoral power becomes the tyranny of the majority.

And so Illinois is losing people, as is outstate New York and California, New Jersey and Connecticut. Texas, Tennesee, ans Florida are growing like mad.

The Oregon outcome: the state government, which traditionally educates, medicates, and incarcerates, will squander public resources tilting against the windmill of climate change. The middle class with portable skills and capital will, in some number, leave, The fortunes of those tied to the land will further fall, and rural areas will become more impoverished & discontented.

We now have the spectre of the attorneys general of a dozen liberal state trying to make federal policy by suing in concert, and of urban leftists agitating to elect leaders by general popular vote rather than through the constitutional compromise worked out 250 years ago.

Many of us hope they will run out of other people’s money before they destroy the system. The finances of many of the big cities, leftist controlled, and bulldozing their state legislatures, are very marginal, as is their performance on the fundamentals of governance.

The left obtains and holds power by promising a lot of goodies to a lot of people. The history of many countries is written in how the masses respond when the promises are broken.

The denizens of Portlandia (Portland, Oregon) will get their virtue signaling Climate change legislation, as well as statewide rent control and electric vehicle mandates.

I wish them the full benefits therefrom; and advise U-Haul to station a number of empty trailers in the northwest.

The description of Australian politics here often leaves on not knowing whether to laugh or cry. We in the states can put on just as good a show,

It’s far worse here. In the State of Victoria, 83% of people live in the one city of Melbourne. Add nearby Geelong and nearby towns and it is 90%. In the US, 80% of people live in little towns from 10,000 to 40,000 people. In England too, while 11 Million live in London, that’s only 20%. Paris too is only 16%. Berlin is only 3.5Million out of 83 million, so Germany is very decentralized.

Of course most of Australia’s income is from coal and iron ore and gas, far from where most people live. So the people in the cities want it all stopped. There is an air of unreality about the Green movement, as if cities are self sufficient when in fact with almost no manufacturing in Australia it is insane to fight coal and iron ore and gas exports. Worse, in the capital of Canberra, no one does anything much. No manufacturing. Unless coffee is manufacturing.
And they are powered by windmills at our expense. Perhaps best placed around parliament.

You have to think of all the faux industries which employ so many when they are at best service industries which generate no wealth at all. The giant public service but also education, medicine, councils, insurance, banking, real estate, maintenance, repair. All our wealth comes from mining and farming but the extremists in the public service, education and medicine all want it stopped. There is just a total lack of self awareness, cossetted in big cities where everything just appears, like wages. H.G. Well’s Eloi. These are your Green voters who want German windmills and no exports to pay for them.

    Climate Comedy everywhere..

‘Sydney City Council has officially declared a “climate emergency”, with councillors unanimously agreeing that Sydneysiders are at “serious risk” from climate change.’

“According to the International Climate Emergency Forum, over 600 jurisdictions in 13 countries have now declared a climate emergency. The Climate Emergency Declaration campaign in Australia is supported by over 50 climate action groups, including the International Climate Emergency Forum, Extinction Rebellion, and Greenpeace Australia.”

So we are now at the stage of a political panic. Thanks to the good councillors of the city of Sydney with its 208,000 inhabitants (not 5 million), they will be safe and carbon neutral by 2050.

‘heatwaves across the country were now five times more likely, and “even more alarming — they start earlier, become hotter and last longer”.’

Also they will put an end to those extinctions, millions and millions of species a day. At least within the city limits.

“97 percent of people said they wanted strong climate action”

You would have to think this is some sort of black comedy. A little like individual councils declaring that they are non nuclear, prohibiting atom bombs within city limits. That should fix it.

I would also like to point out that humans live a lot longer than other animals, especially now we have fossil fuels. We can change our environment, drive cars, turn on electricity and airconditioning.

Other animals live much shorter lives. Insects can be measured in days. Maturity for rats is reached in 9 weeks up to one year. With litters of a dozen rats every 3 weeks they can expand exponentially into any new territory. Humans cannot. We adapt, they select. The Greens now see natural selection as a crime.

So everything on earth has a strategy if not for survival of the individual. To think +1C would threaten short lived species is to reject Darwinian evolution. To think +1C that threatens humans is absurd. Consider Dubai and Singapore and Murmansk. With fossil fuels, our world population has expanded seven fold in just 120 years. The Australian population is now 100x what it was just two hundred years ago.

And we are to believe all life on earth is threatened by Global Warming at this insignificant rate, now stopped? Also how do you get Climate Change without Global Warming and there has been none for the last 20 years?

We can prove global warming has stopped, the plateau in world temperatures for a couple of decades is plain for all to see.

The klimatariat call it a hiatus because they expect temperatures will jump up any minute, so to win the debate temperatures have to fall and stay there for a few years.

In the meantime I expect the ABC will gradually return to the centre and we’ll eventually see more balanced programs on climate change. This cannot be rushed, Ita has her brief.

The hottest areas are Mid East, North India, North Aftrica. The hot part in India is that which is held against the Himalaya. The sun is now directly over head of the tropic of cancer. Warm air, at this time, also finds its way far north to Siberia, China, even Alaska. NOTHING to do with CO2.

can’t see any good coming out of this, especially as Judith Curry is not the best communicator.
***the very name & description of the Hearing gives it away:

23 Jun: Judith Curry: Hearing on climate change & extreme weather
On Tuesday June 25, I will be testifying before the House Oversight and Reform Environmental Subcommittee in a ***Hearing on Recovery, Resilience and Readiness – Contending with Natural Disasters in the Wake of Climate Change…
    PURPOSE
◾The Subcommittee will examine federal, state, and local preparations for the 2019 hurricane and wildfire season and assess the status of recoveries from the Southern California wildfires of 2017-2018 and Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria in Houston, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
◾The hearing will also highlight the fundamental challenges that climate change poses to federal disaster preparedness and recovery, including the link between warmer global temperatures and more intense hurricane and wildfire seasons…

    BACKGROUND
◾Due to climate change, “the number of hurricanes that reach Categories 4 and 5 in strength has roughly doubled” since the 1970s and “there are no longer distinct wildfire ‘seasons’—there are just wildfires all the time.”

Note (BY CURRY): I did not see the BACKGROUND write up until Saturday (yesterday), where I spotted the ‘“the number of hurricanes that reach Categories 4 and 5 in strength has roughly doubled” since the 1970s. I did testify to this effect in 2006, when I testified before the same committee [link to my 2006 testimony]. I can already predict one of the questions that I will get asked in the Hearing…

Considering that we had an extinct giant kangaroo expert as Chief Climate Commissioner, we should not be surprised. Sorry, not that I remember. It was always in Science. At least at Melbourne University. It seems it still is. Perhaps you are confusing Geography an Arts degree major subject with Geology, which is a Science degree major. This from the UofM web site on meteorology.

“Learn about atmospheric and oceanic theory, climate and weather modelling and prediction, and the roles of wind and ocean current systems. Build your skills in a range of areas, including data analysis, computer modelling, and critical evaluation.

You’ll complete this major as part of a Bachelor of Science degree.

In your first and second years you will complete subjects that are prerequisites for your major, including mathematics and climate science subjects.

In your third year, you will complete 50 points (four subjects) of study that is deep and specialised study in climate and weather science.”

The abuse of the very real and useful modelling that provides engineering certainty is evident in claiming to apply it to climate.

A sort of demi God in his own world. Like Tim Flannery or Al Gore or Jim Hansen but with better qualifications. So like the Pope, he is infallible. Why then has every prediction been wrong for 30 years? Or is that just a misunderstanding by the Climate ignorant?

Ask almost any economist and she’ll tell you the same thing: if you want to save the planet from runaway [global warming], you have to make energy expensive.

“Economics contains one fundamental truth about [global-warming] policy,” wrote Yale University economist William Nordhaus in 2008, who won the 2018 Nobel Prize for his work.

“For any policy to be effective in solving global warming, it must raise the market price of carbon, which will raise the market prices of fossil fuels and the products of fossil fuels.”

22 Jun: Xinhua: Plans announced for world’s largest solar farm in Central Australia
A Singaporean company has revealed plans for the world’s largest solar farm in central Australia.
David Griffin, managing director of power generation company Sun Cable, told News Corp Australia on Saturday that the 20-billion-Australian-dollar (13.8 billion U.S. dollars), 15,000-hectare project could start producing power as soon as 2027.
Power generated by the farm, which will be built near Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory (NT), will be exported to Singapore via a 3,800-km High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable.

According to Sun Cable it will supply approximately one third of all Singapore’s electricity while also creating 2,300 jobs in the NT and South Australia (SA).
Australian solar panel manufacturer 5B’s Maverick, a pre-fabricated easily deployed panel, will be used on the farm.

The announcement of the project comes one day after climate solutions research institute Beyond Zero Emissions released a report that found embracing renewable energy could create 8,000 jobs for the NT by 2030.

Icicles form in Alice Springs as freezing conditions lead desert city to shudder
    NT News-2 hours ago
… this morning it dropped to a mere 12.7C. Middle Point, to the east of Humpty Doo, had its coldest night on record bottoming out at only 4.8C…

TOP PIC, IS AT BOTTOM ALSO, WITH CAPTION: Playground equipment was covered in icicles

25 Jun: Queensland Times: It’s so cold there’s icicles in Alice
    by Benedict Brook
The city at the centre of the continent has bloomed a thousand icicles this week as the winter weather bites hard in the Northern Territory.
Alice Springs dropped to – early on Monday and -1C on Sunday with an apparent temperature of -5.6C.
It’s certainly cold but given there’s been no rain in Alice Springs, it’s something of a mystery why the icicles have formed…

Images posted by the NT’s education department from Ross Park School in Alice’s east shows a multitude of icy tentacles, more common in Tassie than the territory, hanging from playground equipment and gum trees.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said a near stationary high pressure system in the Great Australian Bight has pushed cool, dry air into the Top End.
High pressure brings clear skies and in winter when the sun is at its weakest and that’s perfect conditions for freezing overnight temperatures.

PIC: Staff at a school in Alice Springs captured stunning images of icicles on the trees during a chilly morning…

***BOM Senior Forecaster Sally Cutter revealed to news.com.au there was something not quite right about the icicle infestation. But you have to look closely.
“If you look in the pictures you will see that some trees have icicles and some don’t. That’s because the icicles have been caused by people turning on their sprinklers. The air is too dry to form icicles so this is humans and nature working in tandem.”…

Many Melbourne residents have woken up to frost covering their cars and backyards as the city’s cold weather snap continues.
Temperatures dropped to below -3 degrees in some parts of the state overnight after Sunday broke winter records and was the coldest June day since 1985.
The icy weather is continuing until the weekend and there is a severe frost warning in place for Tuesday…

PICS: One woman in Hoppers Crossing, in Melbourne’s south-west, woke up to an icy lawn and, to show just how cold it was, managed to freeze towels rock solid…
There was also chunks of ice in a tub that had a small amount of water and children’s toys…

All perfectly logical. And another $6Bn to pump the water of the Snowy back uphill using windmills but probably using coal. Or not at all, like our desalination plants. It’s only your money.

The summer solstice passed a few days ago, the longest day of the year with the most sunshine…
But not this year. Portions of Colorado are under “a winter weather advisory this weekend” as reported (LINK) by the Denver Post, with “snowfall expected in the mountains.” Wait a minute, it’s officially summer, isn’t it?…

Steamboat had almost two feet of snow, as reported by CBS News. CNN chimed in, noting (LINK), “The last time the city saw snow this late was on June 17, 1928.” Almost a century ago…
Rather than swimming, many in Denver will instead build a fire and stay indoors. A message I received Saturday morning from my local club, “Due to the weather the pool will be closed all day today.”…

Forget the 1960s surf movie “Endless Summer” and instead create a remake called “Endless Winter.” Colorado ski mountain Arapahoe Basin is still open, and contemplating staying open for the July 4th weekend. Conditions aren’t too shabby either, “The current base is 37 inches…and 8 runs are open.”…

    by Graeme Paton, Transport Correspondent
Motorists are being forced to pay up to a third more to insure electric cars than petrol or diesel equivalents, prompting new concerns over the cost of switching to green vehicles.
A new analysis shows that owners of battery-powered cars face an insurance bill up to £240 per year more than those with similar combustion engine models. The average price for insurance cover was 14 per cent higher.

The conclusions underline the challenge facing motorists in giving up combustion engine cars in favour of cleaner electric vehicles that produce no emissions from the tailpipe.

socialist think tank has a great idea; writer Rachel calls our PM ***”far-right”!

25 Jun: TheIntercept: We Have to Finance a Global Green New Deal — or Face the Consequences
      by Rachel M. Cohen
The question of how much money the U.S. and other wealthy, industrialized nations will transfer to poor, developing countries so that they can effectively reduce their own carbon emissions has gone largely unaddressed, even as it grows in importance…

The amount of money needed for “climate finance” is one of the most hotly debated issues between countries and represented one of the most contentious aspects of the Paris Agreement in 2015. Poorer countries have repeatedly said they could make steeper emissions cuts if they were adequately supported by wealthier nations in the process.

A new report (LINK) from the People’s Policy Project, a socialist think tank, argues that industrialized countries should contribute $2 trillion annually to help developing nations stave off the effects of climate change. An investment of that size would be 20 times larger than existing global commitments, which developed countries are already struggling to meet…

The needle on climate finance has moved slowly since 2009, when then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced at international climate negotiations in Copenhagen that by 2020 the U.S and other developed nations would “mobilize” $100 billion per year from public and private sources. The figure was selected to convey political will and was not based on any scientific analysis…

25 Jun: Yahoo: AFP: Saudi Arabia accused of nixing emissions mention at UN climate talks
    by Patrick Galey
Saudi Arabia has moved to block mention of the findings of a landmark report on global warming from decisions taken at United Nations’ climate talks, delegates and sources close to the negotiations told AFP Monday…
At the most recent UN climate talks in December, Saudi Arabia joined the United States, Kuwait and Russia in refusing to welcome the findings of the IPCC report…

In Bonn, Saudi Arabia rejected draft phrasing that specifically noted the IPCC’s findings over emissions levels, according to documents seen by AFP.
A source close to the talks said the Saudi delegation argued there was insufficient evidence to support the IPCC’s assertion that 1.5C of warming was vastly beneficial to 2C, and that it raised doubts over the report’s timeframe and scope.
The source told AFP that the US delegation said evidence supporting the 1.5C target was “limited”…

22 Jun: UK Independent: Climate report could be dropped from UN talks after ‘gentleman’s agreement’ made under Saudi pressure
The influential IPCC report shows what the world could look like under 1.5C of warming
      by Phoebe Weston, Science Correspondent
A major study on how to limit global warming could be dropped from formal UN climate talks in Bonn this week after a “gentlemen’s agreement” was made under pressure from Saudi Arabia.
Last December four large oil producers, Saudi Arabia, the US, Kuwait and Russia, refused to endorse the influential Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report which shows what the world could look like under 1.5C of warming…
Now, with UN talks set to continue this week in Germany, Saudi Arabia still objects to the study being part of formal climate negotiations…

A “gentlemen’s agreement” was believed to have been made before the meeting, meaning there could not be dedicated space for country representatives to discuss the key findings.
This means that discussions will finish next Wednesday even if no agreement has been reached.
“This is a gentlemen’s deal that is not very gentlemanly,” Jennifer Tollmann, policy advisor at think-tank E3G told Climate Home News…

Saudia Arabia’s senior negotiator Ayman Shasly has previously told Carbon Brief he does not wish to formally “welcome” the IPCC report.
He said: “You would not say things like, you ‘welcome’ it…because that [means] we are giving legitimacy to some scientific report…that had its own issues of scientific gaps, knowledge gaps,” he said…

24 Jun: VanguardNigeria: North America sabotaging discussions on fossil fuel at UN confab— Nnimmo Bassey
        By Agbonkhese Oboh
The Health of Mother Earth Foundation, HOMEF, has raised the alarm that the United States of America, USA, and other Global North countries may be bullying African countries to obstruct discussions on fossil fuel industry interference at the week-long UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, in Bonn, Germany..

According to the Executive Director of HOMEF, Nnimmo Bassey, “a COI framework is key to keeping big polluters and their allies out of the room to pave way for real solutions to the climate crisis. Now is the time for African governments to take a stand. Enough is enough.”…

Bassey, said: “The U-turn by the African negotiating bloc on the COI issue is suspicious. It is disheartening that an issue as important as protecting the climate negotiations from industry meddling is now subjected to a carrot and stick experiment by US and countries of the Global North.”…
He commended Uganda for braving the odds to become the lead voice for a COI policy and framework in the LDCs, insisting that what delegates from other African countries should do is get out of their stupor and support the LDCs to save Africa…

HOMEF observed that African negotiating block spoke strongly in support of the COI policy in the climate negotiations just last year and now openly opposes the same recommendation.
Over the last four years, the U.S. has opposed the COI policy, using development aid and other leverage points to silence countries, issuing a veiled threat in response to the LDC’s position: that a conflict of interest policy would somehow harm parties with great interest in renewable energy, knowing that this was an area of interest to developing countries.

24 Jun: ConservationInternationalBlog: In Bonn, ’superheroes of the environment’ take center stage
        by Sophie Bertazzo
Indigenous and local activists around the world are the “superheroes of the environmental movement,” Conservation International president Jennifer Morris told attendees at the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF), a side event of the UN climate conference in Bonn, Germany.
The GLF convened more than 600 experts, activists and representatives from a cross-section of science, indigenous groups and civil society.
At the center of their discussions: championing indigenous rights…

19 Jun: ScottishSceptic (Mike Haseler): How to survive the Climate Cult
To put it simply, the age of rationalism is over and we are now in the age of the brainwashed crazy climate cult…
Realistically, the brainwashed zombies who push the climate cult in government and academia, are now so dead to rational argument that it is pointless trying to engage with them. We live in what I think is the best climate that most people on earth have ever experienced but our brainwashed moronic politicians now reject rational thought and call that almost ideal climate an “emergency”. That would be laughable, if it didn’t mean they wanted to commit economic, social and almost certainly environmental suicide (as we won’t be able to afford to do anything about the environment)…READ ON

In all this ‘emissions’ reduction, which is code for CO2, what I find odd is the push for all electric cars, when endless limitations are so well known and CO2 is higher. Extremism in everything.
You do not need coal electricity for hybrids. You do not need expensive charging stations for the few upper middle class showoffs who can afford them. You do not power your car with expensive coal based electricity. You are in fact an environmental vandal, using far too much power, generating even more CO2 and punishing our balance of trade and wrecking our roads with a 2 1/2 tonne vehicle.

A move to cheap hybrids would halve CO2 and far more importantly make our petrol last twice as long and halve our costs, but Greens all want us to drive only expensive, heavy and impossible to charge electric cars. Why? In every way, electric cars actually mean higher coal CO2. The weight savings with hybrids is half a ton per vehicle and the cost is much lower, perhaps a quarter. In Australia a new Toyota Camry hybrid is an excellent family saloon at $30,000 with 4.2L/100km where the basic Tesla is $A120,000 and the top of the line $A240,000. So someone is kidding that they are saving the planet. And they even want us to exempt them from car taxes and subsidize their registration. Words fail.

I am also really puzzled that governments want inner city CO2 reductions but do not ask taxi companies to switch to hybrids, for example. Or buses. Flywheels can do the same as a hybrid, energy storage. Hybrids can switch to all electric at any time too, for short distances in the inner city. As petrol is a major cost for taxis, they could agree. So why did the French government force everyone to buy diesels and now tax them for entering the cities? The Gilets Jaune have a very good point. It was all nonsense. The councils are just pulling our legs.

That makes me think no one is really interested in reducing CO2 output dramatically. It is all just posturing or as we call it now, virtue signalling. Upper middle class solar panels and electric cars, all underwritten by massive hidden taxes on the poor.

Logically it’s more like the Land Rights for Gay Whales movement.

25 Jun: CityAM UK: City voices anger at John McDonnell’s ‘financial totalitarianism’ climate change plans
    by Owen Bennett
Shadow chancellor John McDonnell sent shockwaves through the Square Mile last night amid warnings that his plans to tackle climate change could undermine the entire financial system.
In a speech to trade body UK Finance, McDonnell promised a future Labour government would delist companies with poor green credentials from the London Stock Exchange.

He also unveiled a plan to stop money being invested in companies whose business model or actions run contrary to Labour’s environmental policy.

Many in the City reacted with disbelief to the plans.
Top financier Michael Spencer was scathing, describing the policies as “financial totalitarianism”. The former Tory party treasurer said : “It would be a catastrophe for Britain’s business community and the country’s economy if it was ever carried out.”…

Savvas Savouri, chief economist at Toscafund, was even more damning, dismissing McDonnell’s plans as “infantile mumbo-jumbo”…READ ALL

25 Jun: Daily Mail: Labour’s plans are rattling the City crockery: HENRY DEEDES sees trouble ahead for Labour’s green revolution
While Conservatives continue to tear chunks out of one another, Labour’s Politburo quietly dream of government. And so over in the City of London yesterday, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell was busy outlining plans for a green revolution…

There is method to this slightly barmy-sounding ambition. There are a raft of young, middle-class, Tory-hating voters with neon-coloured hair and interesting piercings to whom this issue speaks urgently…
Around these parts it is no exaggeration to say that the idea of Chancellor McDonnell rattles boardroom crockery big time.
For he is an unreconstructed Trot – a fact of which he makes no bones. As if he was merely discussing changing his milk order, he nonchalantly told an interviewer recently he wants to ‘move on from capitalism’…READ ON

G20 plays down commitment to climate change action
    Financial Times-8 hours ago
Japan has bowed to US pressure by watering down commitments to tackling climate change in its draft G20 communiqué, a sign of how Tokyo is seeking to curry favour with Washington amid tense trade talks and concerns over North Korea…. The wording, seen by the Financial Times, will be discussed by country representative representative “sherpas” before the summit. It could still change significantly before its final adoption…

Does it not strike you that the anti Adani protestors are also anti the Paris climate accord.

    Hear me out.
India is under the accord, excluded from any actions regarding CO2 reductions until 2030
Therefore an Indian company mining coal for energy now is in accord with the treaty.
Protesting about the Adani Indian coal mine is therefore contrary to the Paris climate accord.

The IPCC should take action against them!

25 Jun: Reuters: Despite climate pledges, G20 coal subsidies rise
By Laurie Goering, Thomson Reuters Foundation
Despite promising a decade ago to phase out fossil fuel subsidies, the world’s leading economies more than doubled subsidies to coal-fired power plants over three years, putting climate goals at risk, energy researchers said Tuesday.
Between 2014 and 2017, G20 governments more than halved direct support for coal mining, from $22 billion to about $10 billion on average each year, according to a report by the London-based Overseas Development Institute (ODI), a think tank.

But over the same period they boosted backing for coal-fired power plants – particularly supporting construction of the plants in other, often poorer nations – from $17 billion to $47 billion a year, the report noted.
China and Japan – which will host a G20 summit later this week in Osaka – were the biggest providers of public finance for coal-fired power, followed by South Korea and India, it said…READ ON

Police Departments have long been aware of the correlation between heatwaves and higher crime, but new data measures how poor neighborhoods suffer far more than richer areas.

25 Jun: UK Telegraph: The financial industry is talking the talk on climate change. It must make more effort to walk the walk
by ***Daniel Klier (Group Head of Strategy and Global Head of Sustainable Finance at HSBC)
Political action is a necessary step towards limiting global temperature increase to two degrees, as set out by the 2015 Paris Agreement. But it is not sufficient.
An estimated $100 trillion (£79 trillion) of new infrastructure spending is required by 2030 to transition to a low-carbon economy and stay in line with the Paris targets. Governments and public sector bodies cannot do this on their own. Banks, investors and issuers must pull their weight on climate change. So far, we aren’t doing enough. First, we need to be confident in the business case for green finance. Returns on green products typically equal or even exceed those offered by equivalent non-green offerings…

24 Jun: Nature Climate Change: Shifts in tourists’ sentiments and climate risk perceptions following mass coral bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef
Authors: Matthew I. Curnock, CSIRO Land and Water, James Cook University ETC ETC
Abstract: Iconic places, including World Heritage areas, are symbolic and synonymous with national and cultural identities. Recognition of an existential threat to an icon may therefore arouse public concern and protective sentiment. Here we test this assumption by comparing sentiments, threat perceptions and values associated with the Great Barrier Reef and climate change attitudes among 4,681 Australian and international tourists visiting the Great Barrier Reef region before and after mass coral bleaching in 2016 and 2017.
There was an increase in grief-related responses and decline in self-efficacy, which could inhibit individual action. However, there was also an increase in protective sentiments, ratings of place values and the proportion of respondents who viewed climate change as an immediate threat.
These results suggest that imperilled icons have potential to mobilize public support around addressing the wider threat of climate change but that achieving and sustaining engagement will require a strategic approach to overcome self-efficacy barriers…

24 Jun: The Hill: Briefing Room Blog: Trump administration buried reports warning climate change could hurt crops: report
    By Marina Pitofsky
The USDA declined to issue press releases or announcements on more than 45 peer-reviewed studies that were cleared through the nonpartisan Agricultural Research Service, Politico (LINK) reported on Sunday. The studies all point to the potential effects of climate change, ranging from the discovery that rice loses vitamins in a carbon-rich environment to a warning that increased temperatures could boost pollen levels and intensify allergy season, according to the news outlet…

A USDA spokesperson said that there were no directives to limit the spread of climate-related research…
“USDA has several thousand scientists and over 100,000 employees who work on myriad topics and issues; not every single finding or piece of work solicits a government press release,” the spokesperson added.

25 Jun: Reuters: Merkel’s Bavarian allies snub her coal exit plan
Additional reporting by Andrea Rinke and Markus Wacket, Writing by Joseph Nasr
Conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Bavarian allies have called for Germany to phase out coal by 2030 but the government has insisted on keeping its 2038 target, in the latest sign of strain within her coalition…
The government on Monday rebuffed Soeder’s proposal and said it would stick to its plan to exit coal by 2038 as recommended by a commission of experts who estimated the phase-out would cost 40 billion euros ($45.54 billion) at least…

Bavaria has little to lose from speeding up the coal exit. It is home to only 5 of the more than 100 coal power stations in Germany and it has no coal mines…

Critics say her abrupt decision to phase out nuclear power in Germany after the Fukushima disaster in 2011 has driven up energy prices and increased Germany’s dependence on coal.
