Backlash Part II for the PR hacks

This moment is shaping up to become a part of modern folklore.

The toll for the reputations of all involved in SplatterGate continues, and this downfall is so worth documenting.

The Wall St Journal

But it’s evil, not just stupid. Some critics, such as Don Surber and The American Spectator, describe the video’s message as, in the words of Surber’s headline, “Just Blow Up Global Warming Skeptics.” Even this is an understatement. The “crime” for which the children in the video are “executed” is one of omission, not commission. They are murdered not even for dissenting against 10:10’s political crusade, but merely for being indifferent to it. This is the essence of totalitarianism.

One may hope that Jim Edwards is right when he denies that “this is actually what environmentalists want.” But it’s bad enough that this is what they fantasize about–and that they manifestly felt no inhibition about airing such a depraved fantasy in public.

The Independent h/t Benny Pieser

As often as 10:10 tried to pull the film off YouTube, their critics re-posted it.

This, at least, proves what a cataclysmic misjudgement Curtis had made. When you try to satirise the critics of your campaign, and it turns out that those very critics embrace your film as demonstrating exactly what they find unbearable about the climate-obsessed eco-lobby, then you know that you have kicked the ball into your own net. Unfortunately, just as a star footballer who scores a spectacular own goal must now endure his foolishness being viewed endlessly on the internet, so Richard Curtis will have this hanging round his neck, like a stinking fish, for as long as he is successful enough to be worth mocking.

The Daily Telegraph

It’s important to grasp the quasi-religious nature of the 10:10 pressure group. Irrespective of where you stand on AGW, it’s clear that its pernickety commandments, most of them involving energy-saving lightbulbs, won’t make any difference to the fate of the planet. But they do have a sacred significance, as do the deaths in the Curtis snuff movie. There’s nothing like the prospect of the ritual slaughter of children to excite prophecy believers, in my experience.

Greenwise Business report Kyocera are reconsidering their funding for 10:10

Tracey Rawling Church, director of Brands and Reputation at Kyocera Mita, said: “We are not happy with the content of the film. We were very shocked by the movie and consider it to represent a grave error of judgement.”

Rawling Church, who was keen to point out that the Kyocera Mita had had no part in the film, or knowledge of it, said the company was now considering its sponsorship relationship with 10:10.

…Sony said it “strongly condemned the release”

Sony UK was one of the companies planning a series of carbon cutting activities in partnership with 10:10 this week, in the build up to its ‘Day of Doing’, a major event 10:10 is planning for Sunday October 10. It said today: “[This] video risks undermining the work of the many thousands of members of the public, schools and universities, local authorities and many businesses, of which Sony is one, who support the long-term aims of the 10:10 movement and are actively working towards the reduction of carbon emissions.”

IowaHawk graphically captures just how much effort went into such a dog of a film.

“Perhaps what we need is a fresh new campaign,” offers one of the conferees. “Something different, provocative… something edgy. Something that will really get our message across.” This is greeted with great excitement. The finance director pours through spreadsheets and identifies a budget source. An executive screening committee is appointed who develop timelines and begin scheduling meetings with London’s top agencies and independent film production firms.

Several weeks later, after sitting through a half dozen agency presentations that have yet to meet their standards, 10:10’s highly paid executive brain trust arrives at a meeting at the sleek offices of  London’s hottest agency Splodey, Youngblood, Gutz & Bones. After introductions, small talk, and pastries, SYG&B’s creative director – winner of 5 British Clio awards – strolls confidently to the television monitor at the front of the room and walks the 10:10 clients through a scene-by-scene video storyboard pitching a new promotional mini-movie that will solve their communication dilemma. The smoothness of the presentation masks the hundreds of late night man-hours and debating the SYG&B creative department spent in crafting it – but it was worth it.

“Brilliant!” exclaims the 10:10 executive committee chair, to the enthusiastic nods of his colleagues. “Add one more exploding child, and I think we have a winner.”

This has got to be the biggest FAIL in the entire history of the internet. Anyone remotely associated with the production of this film should forever be banished from any public institution in the English speaking world, and immediately referred for psychiatric evaluation.

Vox populi romps in with the glorious image of fighting enviro-nazi’s who are armed with solar powered tanks:

I had previously preferred the term “global warming fascists”, but the term simply doesn’t do justice to these twisted, human-hating idealogues.  It appears we may end up eventually having to go to war with the sick bastards should they take over a country or two just like we did with their German predecessors; as with the National Socialists, the global warming extremists genuinely believe that their mad pseudo-scientific myths justify killing people.

Fortunately, given that their tanks will be solar-powered and their cruise missiles will be launched by turbine windmills, it should take a lot less than five years to defeat them…

Greenpeace are caught like wombats in the headlights — and simultaneously distance themselves while they stand their ground (confused — yes):

(from DBKP)

The Daily Caller went looking for reactions from other environmentalists groups, and could only wrangle a tepid condemnation from Greenpeace, who said:

“As an organization committed to non-violence, I think you can imagine how Greenpeace views this material. At this time, the only people promoting the material are climate skeptics and think tanks funded by corporations known for lobbying against climate change legislation.”

In other words, things would settle down, if the sinister forces of well-funded corporate climate-change skepticism would just get out of the way, and let 10:10 finish flushing this turd down the memory hole. Once again, Greenpeace illustrates the utter inability of the Left to deal with opposing ideas. They can’t allow for the possibility of honest dissent. They can’t even handle their own words being repeated back to them. No group besides Greenpeace had anything to say about this disgusting film at all. In fact, Greenpeace didn’t really say anything about it. They just told us to imagine what their response would be, given their sacred commitment to non-violence.

And Donna Le Framboise points out that they ought to sack their PR team. Couldn’t they see this coming?

Grumpyoldtwat has a barbed copy of a Richard Curtis interview where he innocently describes his enthusiasm for the “humour” of blowing up kids while silent images of terrorism are juxtaposed in the background. Grumpy has a wicked dark sense of comic timing.

(The 10:10 video) was the considered message from the very heart of the global green movement: you stand in the way of our plans and we will eliminate you. Your friends might be shocked as the gore of your atomised body attaches itself to their faces, but not too much – just a little gasp and on we go.

…whichever way you dress it up, the climate alarmist message ultimately can be boiled down to death.

In Positively Giddy Franny, Paul Chesser uses Frannies own Twitter account to highlight the immature intellectual acuity of Franny:

The first “sorry” certainly had an “Age of Stupid” tone about it, which is the title of high-flying Franny Armstrong‘s aviation-causes-global-warming crockumentary from last year. 10:10’s Franny helped make the Splattergate video as well, which she was extremely giddy about as Friday’s release date approached. Just under a year ago, Climategate stripped away the facade of the science behind Anthropogenic Global Warming to expose the lies and manipulation behind their science which as it turns out really isn’t there.

Now Splattergate has revealed the callousness of their motives.

I consider this PR propaganda as a real and direct threat to my children and myself. This was their intention and the message was clear. The motives behind this clip show the utter callousness and complete brainwashing that has occurred.

This was not an attempt at humor, it was a very direct threat which wasn’t even thinly guised. The argument that it was an attempt at humor is merely an attempt at spin.

This debate has gone from the scientific debate to a political debate, and now, I fear this has now moved into a belief system which is targeting our children.

I encourage everyone, everywhere to start asking questions about what is being taught to their children on this topic and how it is being done. Start by discussing climate change at home, be open and receptive to their views. Remember, it is your responsibility as a parent to have a clear understanding of what is being taught to your children wrt this topic which is obviously leading some people to barrack for violence.

Jo, I checked and O2, which is a Telefonica company here in the UK, is still funding 10:10, I have written to Telefonica saying I’m moving somewhere else once my 3 contracts come to an end, unless they apologise for funding this fiasco. If others in the UK and elsewhere do the same it will demonstrate our abhorrence at the casual disregard for the lives of dissenters in this awful movie. The address in Europe is:http://www.telefonica.com/en/contact_us/otros.shtmlo

Write to them, nicely of course.

There is one thing in the movie that gives me creep. That isn’t the blowing. That is performed as in comedy not in real graphical way. But I lived under communistic rule – in a totalitarian regime. The regime demanded “voluntary” involvement to pledge movement to solidarity events etc. Nevertheless, lack of “volunteer” involvement was negatively appreciated in consequent treatment. The ways of involvement encourage looked pretty the same as in the movie.

The similarity in involvement encourage really scared me. It looked pretty real like when collectivistic Red Bolsheviks wanted us to accept “volunteer pledges” for good noble reasons which a remember well. If it should come again for any other “noble” reason then Berlin Wall Fall was pointless.

I rather think this was a religious movement for a long time now with children being used as political pawns. This goes true for most misguided movements however.

Nice to know the media is covering it to some degree though.

@Geronimo: Richard North at EUReferendum is posting the exchanges he’s having with O2 customer services on his blog

@TimG: The logo could also be mistaken for a knuckle-duster (If you’ve only got 2 fingers 😀 ) or an end view of a double-barreled shotgun.

@David: A quote from The Times – The young don’t need religion, as the environment gives them all the certainty they need. Greenery, as a secular religion, has come to dominate not just the curriculum, but the imagination. It’s Blue Peter‘s recycled bottle tops on a grand scale: lessons on the dangers of global warming, projects on endangered species, litter-picking exercises. As any parent will testify, pester power is as often employed these days to guilt Dad into separating out the recyclables as to beg for the latest Transformer. Colleagues who have suffered their children’s eco-scorn assure me that no member of the Inquisition was ever so ruthless, ever so certain of his faith, as their tiny Torquemadas. –Robert Colvile, The Times, 6 October 2010

David – more like the media is covering it up.

Here, case in point. Google search for ‘No Pressure 1010’ –

News results (featuring such widely read news sources as Greenfudge, Mediaite, and Jim Treacher) 52 returns.

If you genuinely believed, as many do, that there is a threat of imminent global disaster which could be averted by violence, then violence is a very rational option. These are dangerous times where one group believes action is imperative but, while governments have backed off from action, no one, either governments or MSM, have challenged the global disaster paradigm to blow the debate open and release some of that pressure. This leaves those demanding action in a dangerous limbo where individuals may take action into their own hands. The 10:10 video is symptomatic of repressed frustration of a group that has seen the failure of things like Earth Hour, who have seen that token gestures like changing light bulbs are pointless, and have seen that solar and wind power are just not cutting the mustard. They need big action but are being blocked by a few noisy nay-sayers.
I’m very worried about what they might do next.

the media coverage of 10:10’s “no pressure” film is virtually NON-EXISTENT, because “climate change” formerly known as CAGW and “carbon” formerly know as CO2 are pretexts of the corrupt western climate establishment David (and Jo’s blog) have been questioning in recent days. the aim is to restructure the world economy and it is not partisan and, if it suecceeds, it will come at the considerable expense of all but the power elites.

in the US, where we are told Republicans are sceptics, only James Inhofe, the Senator from Oklahoma – who is characterised as a nutter by the media – has even mentioned the “no pressure” film and, in Australia, there’s been not a peep from the so-called sceptics in the Coalition.
    as for the UK Govt:

28 Sept: William Hague’s climate change speech – in full
Foreign Secretary William Hague has today delivered a speech titled ‘The Diplomacy of Climate Change’ to the Council on Foreign Relations in New York
Today I want to talk about why I believe we, as foreign policy practitioners, need to up our game in building a credible and effective response to climate change. Climate change is perhaps the twenty-first century’s biggest foreign policy challenge along with such challenges as preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. A world which is failing to respond to climate change is one in which the values embodied in the UN will not be met…
I will first argue that an effective response to climate change underpins our security and prosperity. Second, our response should be to strive for a binding global deal, whatever the setbacks. And third, I will set out why effective deployment of foreign policy assets is crucial to mobilising the political will needed if we are to shape an effective response…
No-one can have failed to be appalled by the devastating floods in Pakistan…
While no one weather event can ever be linked with certainty to climate change, the broad patterns of abnormality seen this year are consistent with climate change models…
The clock is ticking. The time to act is now.
We must all take responsibility for this threat. We must take robust action…
We need to shift investment urgently from high carbon business as usual to the low carbon economy – this means building an essentially decarbonised global economy by mid century…
That is why the coalition to which I belong has committed itself to being the greenest government ever in the UK…
And because it is imperative that foreign and domestic policies are mutually reinforcing we must ensure that our approach is coherent. That is why we established the UK’s National Security Council to ensure this happens across the full range of issues, including climate change…
We must build a global consensus if we are to guarantee our citizens security and prosperity. That is a job for foreign policy. The fundamental purpose of foreign policy is to shift the political debate, to create the political space for leaders and negotiators to reach agreement. We did not get that right before Copenhagen. We must get it right now.
So we urgently need to mobilise Foreign Ministers and the diplomats they lead, as well as institutions such as the Council on Foreign Relations, to put climate change at the heart of foreign policy.
When I became Foreign Secretary in May, I said the core goals of our foreign policy were to guarantee Britain’s security and prosperity. Robust global action on climate change is essential to that agenda. That is why the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, under my leadership, is a vocal advocate for climate diplomacy. All British Ambassadors carry the argument for a global low carbon transition in their breast pocket or their handbag. Climate change is part of their daily vocabulary, alongside the traditional themes of foreign policy. They are supported by our unique network of climate attachés throughout the world…
Collectively we share a responsibility to those most vulnerable to the impact of climate change. Bangladesh, with its densely populated coastal region, is particularly susceptible to rising sea levels. Glacial melt, sea level rises and El Niño-type events threaten the lives of millions across South America. And the very existence of many small islands states is under threat…

LOL – William Hague is concerned about the poor!

9 Dec 2009: Guardian: John Vidal in Copenhagen & Dan Milmo: Copenhagen: Leaked draft deal widens rift between rich and poor nations
Climate talks are in disarray barely days into the summit, putting at risk international unity to fight global warming
Development NGOs were particularly scathing in their criticism.
Antonio Hill, climate policy adviser for Oxfam International, said: “This is only a draft, but it highlights the risk that when the big countries come together, the small ones get hurt.”
Hill added: “It proposes a green fund to be run by a board, but the big risk is that it will run by the World Bank and the Global Environment Facility [a partnership of 10 agencies including the World Bank and the UN Environment Programme] and not the UN.
“That would be a step backwards, and it tries to put constraints on [emissions in] developing countries when none were negotiated in earlier UN climate talks.”
A spokesman for Cafod, a development charity with close links to some of the poorest countries in the world, said: “This draft document reveals the backstage machinations of a biased host who, instead of acting as nonpartisan broker, is taking sides with the developed countries….
Di-Aping said that the G77 remained committed to the talks.
“We will not walk out of the talks at this late hour, because we will not allow the failure of Copenhagen. But we will not sign an inequitable deal; we will not accept a deal that condemns 80% of the world population to further suffering and injustice.”
Later this week, the rich countries can expect fresh assaults from the Africa group of countries, the least developed countries group, and the association of small island states. Each is liable to upset the best laid plans of developed world leaders who those groups say appear to place the need to reach an agreement above fully engaging with the poorest countries.
“We call ordinary people to put the utmost pressure on politicians to come to their senses,” said Di-Aping.

the ironically acronymed ICE being in control of CAGW financial engineering, backed by the taxpayer no less, is at the heart of the story:

    Wikipedia: ICE
In June 2001, ICE expanded its business into futures trading by acquiring the International Petroleum Exchange (IPE), now ICE Futures Europe, which operated Europe’s leading open-outcry energy futures exchange. Since 2003, ICE has partnered with the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) to host its electronic marketplaces. In April 2005, the entire ICE portfolio of energy futures became fully electronic. In April 2010 ICE bought CCX’s owner Climate Exchange plc. Climate Exchange plc also owns the European Climate Exchange (ECX)…
On March 4, 2009, ICE announced that ICE US Trust, LLC (ICE Trust), a New York limited liability trust company, received regulatory approval from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System to become a member of the Federal Reserve System and to serve as a clearing house and central counterparty for credit default swap (CDS) transactions.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IntercontinentalExchange

3 pages: July 2010: Businessweek: ICE’s Jeffrey Sprecher: The Sultan of Swaps
Sprecher has found profit remodeling the credit default swap market. His close relationship with banks has critics worried that he hasn’t made it safer
Now the 55-year-old chief executive officer of Intercontinental-Exchange (ICE), known as ICE, is busy remodeling the $25 trillion market for credit default swaps (CDS), the derivative contracts that played a starring role in the financial breakdown.
Sprecher founded ICE a decade ago as an online marketplace for energy trading. Since getting into the business of CDS clearing—serving as a middleman in transactions involving the derivatives—ICE has become dominant. Between its operations in the U.S., called ICE Trust, and Europe, Sprecher’s company has cleared more than $10 trillion in such swaps; its closest rival, CME Group (CME), has cleared $192 million…
Mere weeks after the federal government came to the rescue of AIG, which had been driven to its knees by its massive CDS exposure, he cut a deal with 10 of the world’s largest banks, including Goldman Sachs (GS), Morgan Stanley (MS), and Bank of America (BAC), to clear their trades in exchange for sharing the profits with them…
Sprecher’s firm and its partners stand to profit even more from President Barack Obama’s July 21 signing of the financial regulatory reform act, which requires most standard derivatives to be cleared through a third party such as ICE…
Energy trading surged at ICE in 2001 after its larger rival, Enron, blew up. That same year, ICE expanded into crude oil by acquiring the International Petroleum Exchange in London. Renamed ICE Futures Europe, this London exchange trades half of the world’s crude and refined oil futures. Its benchmark Brent crude oil contract is used to price two-thirds of the world’s oil supply, according to ICE…
When oil prices soared to more than $140 a barrel in 2008, some members of Congress blamed speculators trading on ICE for the jump, according to lawmakers’ comments and letters to regulators at the time…
Darrell Duffie, a finance professor at Stanford University who co-authored a report in January with the New York Fed on derivatives, raises similar concerns. “We already have an oligopoly among these banks in the over-the-counter derivatives market, and this just further extends the oligopoly to clearing.”

22 Sept: WSJ: ICE Says CDS Clearing Growth May Bring Central Bank Support In Crisis
By LANANH NGUYEN And ANGELA HENSHALL
A surge in credit-default-swaps clearing may allow global exchange operator IntercontinentalExchange Inc. access to central bank liquidity during financial crisis periods, the company’s chief executive said Wednesday.
Since the financial crisis, regulators have pushed for more central clearing of CDS contracts, but this has created the risk that clearing houses themselves become systemically important in the financial system.
A higher volume of CDS clearing through ICE has increased regulation and reporting requirements for the company, but ICE Chairman and Chief Executive Jeffrey Sprecher said “on the upside, it permits the security of having clearing deposits with the central bank at crucial moments.”
U.S. legislation was passed by Congress in July giving clearing houses access to backstop loans from the Federal Reserve if they run into financial trouble. This measure is designed to stop losses spreading through the financial system if a clearing house runs out of cash due to the collapse of one or more of its customers…
ICE Clear Europe and ICE Trust US have now cleared CDS with a gross notional value of $12 trillion, ICE said earlier Wednesday.
Moody’s Investors Service Inc. said this week that ICE’s CDS clearing platforms are now “a systemically important part of the global financial market.”
Mr. Sprecher expects rapid growth for the CDS sector. “I believe credit is going to be a globally traded asset class and may morph into a more utility product, and trade like stocks do today. I think we will ultimately trade the credit value of companies,” he said.
ICE is also working on sovereign CDS products for Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain

here’s where Defense comes into the picture, again from all ppolitical persuasions:

    Wikipedia: UK Met Office
It currently holds a quasi-governmental role, being required to act commercially, but also has remained an executive agency of the Ministry of Defence since April 1990. A branch of the Met Office known as the Mobile Met Unit (MMU) accompany forward units in times of conflict advising the armed forces of the prevailing conditions for battle, particularly the RAF. The Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research and the National Meteorological Library and Archive are also parts of the Met Office…
IPCCUntil 2001 the Met Office hosted the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change working group, chaired by John Houghton, on climate science. In 2001 the working group moved to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Met_Office

links to Vote-Vets obscene “climate” videos can be found at the bottom of this entry. VoteVets is allegedly “non-partisan”, but has CFR and Democrat connections, and uses anti-iranian and anti-terrorism scare tactics to insist the climate energy bill be passed:

    Wikipedia: VoteVets.org
VoteVets.org is organized as a non-partisan political action committee (PAC) and non-profit 501(c)(4) status in the United States. It was co-founded in 2006 by Jon Soltz and Jeremy Broussard.
    First 2010 clean energy ad.
On February 4, 2010, VoteVets.org launched a $2 million ad campaign in seven states and Washington, D.C., pushing for a comprehensive energy bill that, according to VoteVets.org, would cut dependence on oil, and calling out those who the organization felt were putting contributions from oil interests above American interest…
    “Tough” clean energy ad
On March 4 2010, VoteVets.org committed close to a million dollars to a powerful ad campaign — which ran nationally and in eight states – which tied Iran’s ability to create new and powerful weapons used against U.S. troops to American addiction to oil. It called on Congress to pass comprehensive clean energy legislation and defund America’s most dangerous enemies. The ad was paid for by VoteVets.org Action Fund in coordination with Operation Free. Local versions of the ad are running in eight states, calling on Senators to provide leadership on the issue by committing to the passage of a clean energy and climate change bill…
The ad featured Iraq War and US Army Veteran Christopher Miller, who earned a Purple Heart as the result of an explosion from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED)…
The ad concludes by telling Congress, “It’s time to lead. Pass Clean Energy and Climate Legislation.”
Senator John Kerry, the sponsor of the bi-partisan clean energy bill on the Senate, endorsed the ad on the same day. On April 14, 2010, conservative Fox News host Bill O’Reilly showed the ad on his television show during a segment with conservative comedian and commentator Dennis Miller in which both endorsed the ad….
    Clean energy poll
In April 2010, VoteVets conducted a poll of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans regarding their positions on clean energy. The poll found that 73 percent of them supported Clean Energy Climate Change legislation in the United States Congress, 79 percent believed ending our dependence on foreign oil was important to national security, and 67 percent supported the argument that such legislation will help their own economic prospects.
The poll was conducted by Lake Research Group for VoteVets.org In February, and is made up of 45 percent self-identified Republicans, 25 percent Independents, and 20 percent Democrats…

In May 2010, VoteVets launched an ad campaign in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The massive $1.5 million television and web ad campaign was the first to make the connection between the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and our national security. …
In the ad, Louisiana resident and veteran Evan Wolf makes the point that the necessity of using the Guard to help clean up efforts takes the military away from critical national security missions…
“Some folks in Washington say now is not the time for clean American power. I got to ask – if not now, when?” he closes.
The television ad ran on national cable, with versions running in Louisiana, Florida, Maine, Washington, New Jersey, Illinois, and New Hampshire, that called on those states’ Senators to push clean legislation forward. Legislation pending in the Senate would cut America’s foreign oil dependence in half, expand the clean energy manufacturing tax credit by $5 billion and force offshore drilling rigs further offshore…
    Summer ad campaign
In June 2010, VoteVets partnered with the League of Conservation Voters, Service Employees International Union, and Sierra Club and announced an $11 million campaign to help ensure that the U.S. Senate takes decisive action on comprehensive energy and climate legislation that summer. This unprecedented effort is one of the largest coordinated efforts to date to educate the public on where key Senators stand on the historic fight to put America back in control of its energy future with legislation that creates new clean energy jobs, reduces our dangerous addiction to oil and curbs harmful carbon pollution…
Brigadier General (Ret.) Steven Anderson ad
In July 2010, VoteVets launched an ad campaign featuring Brigadier General Steven Anderson (Ret.), Chief of Logistics in Iraq under General David Petraeus, calling for the U.S. Senate to pass a Clean Energy plan. In the ad, Anderson cited how our dependence on oil has led to American deaths in the warzone…

April 2010: Greenbiz: U.S. Military Battles Massive Carbon Footprint
The U.S. government is a huge energy guzzler, with the military responsible for 80 percent of it. The financial aspect is mind-boggling: When the price of a barrel of oil rises $10, the DOD incurs more than $1.3 billion in additional energy costs. In 2008, the DOD had an energy budget of $20 billion, but many peg the military’s true energy costs much higher.
In its Quadrennial Defense Review Report released in February, the military predicted that climate change would serve as an “accelerant” of conflict and instability, and recommended it ramp up its use of renewable energy and insulate itself from energy price volatility.
The DOD’s long-term energy goal calls for a quarter of energy to come from renewable sources by 2025…

final post – sorry for taking up so much space, but i’m rushing to go out:

6 Oct: Guardian: China and US clash at climate talksUS negotiating stance deemed ‘totally unacceptable’ by China after American climate envoy accuses delegates of trying to renegotiate Copenhagen accord
    by Jonathan Watts in Tianjin
Given the slow rate of progress, Pershing said there was a concern that no agreement would be possible in Mexico. Echoing comments made this week by EU negotiators, he said it could damage the UN system..
China has responded in kind. Dropping the diplomatic language that characterised public statements on the first two days, Xie Zhenhua, the head of the host’s negotiating team, made little attempt to conceal the target of his frustration.
“A developed country I won’t name hasn’t done a job for itself. It has not provided financing or technology to other countries, yet it asks them to accept stringent monitoring and voluntary domestic actions,” Xie told reporters. “It’s totally outrageous. It’s quite unacceptable.”..
Poorer nations are reluctant to have their pledges mixed with those of richer nations, which have a greater historical responsibility for climate change, particularly given the political uncertainty surrounding the ability of the US to achieve its goals.
Without locking the existing commitments in place, EU officials say it will be difficult to move the discussion forward to the more ambitious goals needed to achieve the Copenhagen target of keeping global warming within 2C by 2050.
The need for greater action was highlighted in a new report published today by WWF, which showed that even if every country lived up to its Copenhagen pledges by 2020, global emissions would be at least 20% higher than the 40 gigatonne budget needed to avoid dangerous climate change.
“It’s clear that some countries are facing up to the necessary transformations of their economies but other countries have failed to endorse this new trend speedily and are risking the safety and prosperity of all,” said Gordon Shepherd, leader of WWF’s global climate initiative.

10:10 claiming it was just a joke reminds me of Rudd’s “we have long memories” threat to opponents of the mining tax that he subsequently claimed was just a joke. The menace in both messages is clear.

Why does riding a bike and staying healthy go hand in hand with action on climate change?

This invitation was received by our designer today. It’s for an event on Sunday 10 October organised by 350.org AND 10:10. 10 teams from across Sydney will converge on Surry Hills to promote the 350.org global day of climate action and the new cycle ways. I wonder if the organisers have heard about the 10:10 video?

“Digital Eskimo and friends are taking part in the 350.org / 10:10 campaigns global day of positive action on climate change. And to do it we’re throwing a party on wheels! On Sunday 10th of October at 10 AM we’re going to show Sydney just how rockin’ cycling is for riders, the environment, the community and (especially) business owners along the new cycle ways. So if you love bikes or just love the planet … grab some mates and help us Keep it Wheel!”

Was it just me or did any body else clock the UN podium speech by Kevin Rudd A couple of weeks ago just preceeded the IMF advocating a strengthened mining tax & an increased GST?

Probably just a coincidence, but either way…. thanks Kev.

Instead of asking Sony, Kyocera and the others whether they will disavow the 10:10 movie, perhaps we should be asking them why they support 10:10 at all. This is a pretty radical, fanatical organization and I would certainly like to know why major corporations think it’s OK to be associated with them.

This is very significant ( I’m a biased Kiwi !!). But this is effectively a back down to a court case , the first real attempt world wide , to my knowlegde to legally challenge the base data of a country.
The challenge now for Australia is to do the same using Ken Stewart’s work , perhaps and see ifyou can et the same result.

    CAGW is not a religion.

It is a cult, mainly run by very creepy people with an overweening sense of moral self-righteousness and certitude, as you will see if you venture over to Lambert’s blog.

Like all cults, it is based on groupthink and fear, disdain and demonization of outsiders, and above all the desperate desire not to allow a single one of their tenets to be challenged. That is why their language is often so vile and their rhetoric so bilious, and why they so urgently want to say ‘the debate is over.

This is a most important development.
I’m wondering if NIWA had any alternative to attempting to disown of their temperature graphs – because presumably if they lose the court case they could be open to litigation from all those people who have lost money on policy actions of the government based on those flawed temp. graphs? The ETS etc.
    What do you think?

    A C @31

I don’t know what to think. Would it be possible for the NZ High Court to overturn their ETS because the agency who provided the basis for the legislation lied about it? If they lied. I don’t know whether they did or not. Here’s what Joe D’Aleo highlighted from the statement:

NIWA has formally stated that, in their opinion, they are not required to use the best available information nor to apply the best scientific practices and techniques available at any given time. They don’t think that forms any part of their statutory obligation to pursue “excellence”.

First they say it is OK to use something less than best practice (translation kiwi to aussie= shonky). Then they say the data series which they present on their website as the authoritarian “NZ temperature record”, without any caveat, is:

…completely unofficial and strictly for internal research purposes [and] nobody else should rely on it.

That seems like false advertising to me.

So not only did the goat eat their homework, but it wasn’t their goat, it was someone elses, and they were on holiday in Hamilton at the time, so they have nothing whatsoever to do with any of it now go away just leave that $70,000 and we’ll do our homework over again (and maybe buy a new goat too, in case).

And the cherry on top is from the very same NZ Temperature Record web page:

NIWA is a world leader in providing raw climate data free over the web.

As I read it , this information from NIWA is from their statement of defence. So it does not mean a court case will not go ahead, but it seem alittle unlikely ( but I’m not a lawyer). Whether anyone could sue for loses based on this, I’d have to it that question to the lawyers on this site

‘immediately referred for psychiatric evaluation’. My thoughts exactly.

What I find most interesting is the posters who have lived under totalitarian regimes immediately recognising the methods and patterns.
The bulk of us who have grown up in modern democratic societies are struggling to process the sheer level evil behind this, we don’t really want to recognise what it is we’re looking at.

The Jews walked calmly into the ‘showers’ for the same reason, they previously had nothing in their life experiences to enable them to recognise what was actually happening.

Possible, but unlikely at this stage. The AGW mob have got into enough trouble with just fantisising about damaging sceptics – actually doing physical harm to other people would put them firmly in the same camp as Al Qaeda et al.

If there’s anything that AGW does well, it has been (until now) public relations. They are clearly cr4p at science.

The makers of “No pressure” are clearly under the impression that sceptics are an immoral minority, but in the UK this is not even the case. Are they aware of this, or just immersed in their insulated group-think?

I have witnessed such cognitive manouevres before now with the warmers. You just surround yourself with like minds, then allow any wild bit of rubbish to morph into reality through starry-eyed unchallenged repetition. Case in point – Christine Milne. She emphatically states that the 32 000 strong climate petition is a fraud. Why? Because they sat around a table and decided it was, easy.

These people are basically unwell and are heading for a big fall. They will splinter into various disoriented sub causes as AGW continues to unravel. A process that is accelerating to my eyes?

There are a few obvious observations from this 10:10 video fiasco.

    1) In the entire making of the film, nobody (apparently) thought that maybe this might be “a bad idea”. This is a poster child example of “group think”. They surround themselves only with people who fully endorse and reinforce their position with the result that there is no diversity of thought. No balance.

    2) The defense, such as it is, is that “it was supposed to be humorous”. But without an ‘agenda’ what could possibly be funny about seeing children blown to pieces. Its not funny. With an agenda, of course it might be funny … but only if you are a supporter of the agenda. Which is why the Guardian editors also thought it funny. But if you don’t support the agenda it comes across, not as funny, but anywhere from disturbing to vile. Because its linked to an agenda. Everyone remember the video of Osama bin Laden and his cronies laughing and back-slapping as they watched replays of the plane hitting the second tower ? It was funny to them.

    3) If they could be so spectacularly wrong about this, maybe .. just maybe …. they are wrong about most things. Surprise surprise.

So lets summarise : single minded opinion with no room for debate, thinks the disembowelment of anyone who disagrees with you is ‘funny’, and is basically wrong about everything. Doesn’t matter what colour it comes in ….. that’s FANATICISM.

I think fellow blogger Andrea Harris at Spleenville (http://spleenville.com/2010/10/02/and-now-for-something-completely-horrendous/) made some good points about who the real targets of the video are. Note that people get blown up only after others have acquiesced. The message is to warn the joiners that they’d better not consider changing their minds. And that reminds me of what Cdn journalist and author George Jonas said about totalitarianism being “coercion without cosmetics.” (http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fullcomment/archive/2009/11/21/george-jonas-the-bomb-is-just-the-beginning.aspx)

Well done to Jo and Anthony Cox on their article published at The Drum Unleashed 7 October 2010. Lots of positive responses. Amazing how many of the antagonists chose to attack Cox and Nova because they are not climate scientists, but they are prepared to listen alarmists with far less science credentials.

I have decided I am tired of being described as a ‘climate sceptic’ which allows critics to paint me as some flat Earther who doesn’t believe the climate changes, or that the earth has warmed in the last 100 years or that human activity can’t contribute to warming. Since the ‘other’ side of the debate have claimed the science is settled and there is scientific consensus despite almost daily evidence of peer reviewed research which supports neither premise, I’ve decided to call myself a ‘Settled Science Consensus Sceptic’.

On the 10:10 issue and the exploitation of children generally in the name of ’solving’ AGW this may be of interest:

    http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/39750.html

Just paid a visit to the drum, Jo and Anthony getting space at the ABC must be getting under the skin of a few of those that believe it’s their ABC and not every-bodies ABC.

I don’t think I have ever seen the terms denial, denier or denialist so many times on the one page before.

As an aside to that, I think we also have to distance ourselves from or educate some people in the media that act as skeptics, while through ignorance or laziness promote false or misleading information.

One such radio presenter like this is Graeme Gilbert on 2SM monday to friday, 7pm to midnight. Now I believe Graeme is a true skeptic but when he has people on disputing CAGW he enthusiastically supports their arguments, always adding things like its all false, there has been NO warming, sea levels have NOT risen. When skeptics make such rash statements as NO WARMING rather than emphasize while there has been warming and a slight rise in sea levels, it is not something that has not happened before and will again, they make the skeptics argument much easier to dismiss.

I had the opportunity to call Graeme last night in relation to the 1010 video, I inquired as to whether he was aware of it’s existence. He stated it had been sent to him multiple times, he repeatedly deleted it, as distasteful as we all agree it is he has missed the opportunity to expose these organisations for what they are.

Almost immediately after my call, Anthony Cox rang in, explaining that he just had an article released at the drum in relation to the 1010 video, again Graeme missed the opportunity to expose these people for what they are, giving Anthony a quick send off, more worried about giving the ABC some free publicity than getting the message out to his audience. As I said earlier some of the few skeptics in the media do little to promote the message.

Posted over at the Drum – copied here so you don’t have to trawl through the hate-mail.

Geoff: I think we agree – this video by 1010 was tasteless but with a hint of underlying truth. We do hear of well-placed Warmists like James Hansen calling for the imprisionment or execution of those who happen to disagree with him.

To quote Winston Churchill: “There is nothing more serious than a joke.” This video is a disturbing insight into the totalitarian nature of the Warmist philosophy.

    Cheers,

As I see it, much of the CC hysteria is eminating from Britain. Sure there is some coming out of the US as well but that’s just the usual academics-on-the-gravy-train scenario. The average Joe in the US doesn’t care about it. No one said anything about it when I was there 6 months ago. Their problems are the economy and the increasing power of the drug cartels south of the border.

What is it with the Brits, then?

    1. Britain for all its fertility and benign climate has to import much of its food and natural resources.

    2. Britain has not just lost its empire, it has lost its energy resources – the coal mines, North Sea oil.

    3. Britain is overpopulated but can no longer ship off surplus people to The Colonies.

    4. Britain is in serious trouble demographically and everyone knows this deep down.

    5. When A.C. of Adelaide says “If you genuinely believed, as many do, that there is a threat of imminent global disaster which could be averted by violence, then violence is a very rational option”, they are spot on. Just leave out “global” and that is where Britain is right now. A.C. is also correct about people starting to see through the various panaceas that have been offered such as alternative energy and low wattage light bulbs.

    6. When an overpopulated country resorts to violence to reduce its population or expand its territory, it always requires some high-minded excuse – “lebensraum”, “converting the heathen”, whatever. This is needed both to persuade the faint-hearted and to recruit allies.

    7. An increasingly violent climate change hysteria is shaping up as Britain’s excuse this time round. We can expect a certain amount of internal violence as everyone gets more het-up. Greenie bovver boys maybe.

Much as I feel sorry for the Brits, it’s not our problem. Let’s not get caught up in it this time. We have our own climate issues to deal with, viz.: high climate variability – our “droughts and flooding rains”.

Thanks Bob; Graham has done that a couple of times; he had Lee Rhiannon on before the election and would not let me query her about the Green response to the Black Saturday bushfires.

10:10’s director is an Australian……….(she of the slightly better apology)
    http://www.1010global.org/uk/about/inside/team/eugenie

Background: Eugenie is Australian, moved to the UK shortly after she turned 30. After a mercifully short spell in stand up comedy, she joined the Brunswick Group where she happened to meet east London community worker, David Robinson and along with a group drawn largely from the advertising and creative industries, they launched the social change movement We Are What We Do.

    Mad Jak;

There is a newish blog site called Climate Lessons which is well worth reading to see some of the blatant green propaganda being directed at children in the UK and elsewhere.

from the comments at Watts up:
    http://wattsupwiththat.com/2010/10/07/frannys-guilty-pleasure/

    Franny is a big fake.

She describes herself, in breathless biographies in the Guardian etc, as an “ex rock drummer turned self-taught film maker.

In fact she’s a second generation, upper middle class, activist media brat.

Her Daddy, Peter Armstrong http://uk.oneworld.net/article/view/113201 , was a senior documentary maker for 20 years at the BBC (where else!) until he bought out the multimedia technology he had developed there and floated “The Multimedia Corporation” on the junior stock market – it later bombed in the dot-com crash. He now runs his own international activist organisation

Daddy worked with her for 10 years on her first film “McLibel” – http://spannerfilms.net/films/mclibel – about the two hippies who were sued for telling lies about Macdonalds. (British left wing media types HATE Macdonalds because their food is enjoyed by the people they most despise – Americans and common people).

She still runs a website providing anti-Macdonalds propaganda to activists.

Her step mum is also an activist film maker and Mummy and Daddy still work with her at her film company http://spannerfilms.net/node/424.

“Greenery” is just her latest vehicle for self promotion.

    My thoughts

My sister in law is a member of the Green Party in the UK, but she does LIVE the lifestyle, putting aside her tiny ‘carbonfootprint’. She is also living proof, that healthy eating, no alcohol, exercise, watch the e-number, no-GM, vegetarinnism, is actually very good for her health.. 40 plus last week, and still gets asked for ID (she does dress like a student though, pink bits in her hair and platform boots, she also has been to many a rally, been interviewed by the BBC and authorised to speak to the media on behalf of the green party

I don’t criticise her, because she LIVES what she believes in, unlike the Al Gore’s and Franny’s of the world…

We do discuss it, I don’t call her an ‘alarmist’, she doen’t call me a ‘deniar’ and we probably agree on 95% plus of environmental issues. She is also a very nice person, and is trained in PR, postive is always the best aproach..

The Franny’s and Gore, Bono’s Sting’s of the world do her and many life long commited paasionate environmentalists a massive disservice. They do all the hard work, the real work about local real environment issues.

Most “greennies” are indeed nice people, sincere, concerned, inoffensive & and thoughtful.

I find it admirable the work that they do, the way they live & their committment to a sense of community & living in harmony with their environment.

Sadly it’s that typical good nature and admirable faith in humanity that makes them so ripe for the picking and exploitation by the more cynical forces that have hijacked their ‘green’ organisations.

If you can harness sincerity in others and turn it to your purpose you should be unstoppable.

I’ve actually started to wonder – is there some organisation that is dedicated to the prevention of conditioning of children? – some group which keeps an eye out for this sort of stuff -regardless of the source?

Christopher Monckton actually done quite a piece on just such matters, very clearly laid out in his evidence to High Court in 2007, form para 5. on page 2, onwards…

The 10:10 movie presents a shining example of what his Compulsion test, at Paragraph 18, on page 5 of Monckton’s Statement to the High Court was deviseded to protect against.

    2. The compulsion test: That the form or content of the presentation constitutes compulsion of the pupils exposed to it, whether by direct threat or by unreasonable or unjustifiable inducement of a state of fear or by indirect menaces such as the unreasonable or unjustifiable application or incitement of peer-pressure;

He certainly knows how to present a compelling case.

[…]With an agenda, of course it might be funny … but only if you are a supporter of the agenda. Which is why the Guardian editors also thought it funny. But if you don’t support the agenda it comes across, not as funny, but anywhere from disturbing to vile.[…]
