She retreated to her car for a while before she could face the store again.
Jokes aside about the snowflake shoppers, these people are acting with integrity (if you believe in the climate models and labcoat curses). If the climate scientists are right, and the public believed them, there would be millions of people with these fears and anxieties.

- Keep Calm and read The Skeptics Handbook.
- Get a real job.
- Go to a Heartland Conference — meet actual skeptics.
- Spend ten minutes a day reading skeptic blogs — good for your mental hygiene.

A couple of years ago I read that approximately half of the Australian adult population have the comprehension level of primary school students. If this is a fact they are obviously the gullible people of our society. If this was not a fact I doubt that politicians would get away with so much nonsense, the MSM would not dare to indulge in the political spin (even paid advertising presented as news items).

When I was teaching (gave it up 20 years ago) the common knowledge was that newspapers were pitched at the reading/comprehension level of a 14 year old. TV was lower. 14 years is low in my opinion, but given what has happened in our education system since then it would not surprise me that it has slipped lower.

Some other group have found advantage in the Scare, for fundraising (e.g. Oxfam, Christian Aid, WWF, Friends of the Earth, and so on down a long long list), for rent-seeeking (see the beneficiaries of windfarms and other renewables scams feeding off subsidies and surcharges on electricity bills), for self-glorification (see Gore, McKibben, Hansen, Mann, and so on down the list of political opportunists), for sadism (see all those producing such as the 10:10 video ‘No Pressure’, and other materials designed to scare and intimidate, and of course for opportunities for financial wheeling and dealing that ‘carbon’ linked schemes can offer (see CapnTrade, see Carbon Credits, and more).
I think ‘The Skeptics Handbook’ is a superb resource for all the pastoral work facing kindly sceptics over the coming years and probably decades, as we look for ways to calm the over-excited, soothe the highly-strung, and reassure those scared anywhere from ‘quite a bit’ to ‘witless’. But there is surely scope for dedicated websites, and more publications to help in this work. The NIPCC reports also provide a great resource for some, and there are excellent histories of the Scare such as ‘Hubris’ by Michael Hart, and Rupert Darwall’s ‘The Age of Global Warming’. These are large works however, and smaller ones would also be welcome.

John, fair point. I wrote The Skeptics Handbook for skeptics, so it isn’t ideal, and perhaps I ought write something specific.
Maybe I should have used a different word — I didn’t mean “gullibles” in a nasty way. These are not the ones driving the problem. They are (mostly) not profiting at all, but trying to live with this impossible belief that they can change the global weather by avoiding foods with excess packaging.
The people driving this alarming fantasy are flying thousands of miles on jet fuel without needing any therapy and raking in the golden gravy.
The Gullibles consist of people like me (when young and ignorant) and others who just can’t do numbers, or go against the crowd. The former just needs information (ie The Handbook) but for the latter two, we need to use the group effect (point out the other consensus, the motivations) and we need images and cartoons, satire, etc. These are exactly what Al Gore uses (except he can’t do satire).

Jo its a hard balance – maybe “vulnerable” might be the right word? The problem is you have adults with adult bodies but child-like intelligence in some cases so they are vulnerable to being exploited.

Jo, most of us reading/posting on this site recognise you as a very good science educator. BUT whenever I have posted on other sites suggesting your site as a good source of information on climate science, the response is mocking. Typically you are described as “not a climate scientist”, “never published any peer-reviewed papers on climate” and a “climate denier blogger”. Even when I have posted a link to your very good “Man Made Global Warming Disproved…” to show a scientific analysis with references, there is bitter rejection of it having any scientific credibility. It’s hard to communicate to most people. Even the local newspaper (Fairfax) will not publish any letter I submit on climate change.
I’ve been involved, to some extent, in adult education myself and have found that the vast majority of people do not think in a logical, analytical or scientific way at all. They think emotionally in a series of pictures or images of the world around them. They do not grasp, in any detail, numbers or narrative except in “headlines” or catchphrases. The ABC is more likely to invite a 22yr old female Greenpeace activist or a junior Journo from the Guardian to comment on climate policy than someone such as yourself. It’s frustrating. Should we start uttering OMG in every sentence to better get the message across? Any comment on this dilemma? OMG, OMG

I had to tell her soda cans were aluminum, she quit drinking soda, aluminum products in deodorants put her of deodorant. I once kidded her that anything other than 100% cotton clothing had chemicals in them that could cancer, she gave up all her clothes that had any synthetics and put cardboard between her cotton sheets and her bed mat, she slept on a futon. I used to look for every opportunity to get her to think about her “green” life style including telling her she was enslaving cows and chickens when she drank milk and ate eggs, she gave them up. She smoked “organic” tobacco, because “that’s what the native american’s did”. She detested doctors and ate her vitamins, all natural of course…(?) She contracted cancers of multiple types, uterine, bone, brain, but she was hell bent for leather to live naturally. She died at 52. In our last conversation she admitted that she probably should have gone to a doctor. Love her still…gullible.

Go back a generation in my case and my father was orphaned at 6 years of age as both his parents died of TB (1911) – his mother in a workhouse in Southwark London. Sam, a Blackphone is made by Silentcircle.com , an android run phone that’s designed specifically to enhance security and privacy. One of the downsides to android operating system on phones is that as android is owned by g**gle, and hard to have proper privacy due to this, although my phone is a hack of android to stop a telco coming in via the baseband link which exists in most phones….its more complex than that, but most smartphones leak your private data like a seive, and as apple stuff is hard to control unless you jailbreak them, but it shouldn’t have to be that hard….I could write a dissertation on this but smartphones are designed to make it easy to track people….

All phones are being designed to allow tracking of their owners. If your phone allows GPS to be shut off except for emergency calls (911 in the states) see if you can verify that it’s actually shut off. Then at least the only location anyone can do is by identifying the base station your phone is nearest to.
But let’s face it. If you can reach someone else by some means, phone, Internet, black magic, whatever it is, then that same means can be used to locate you. Even in the days of rotary dial phones and mechanical step relay switching centers a call could be traced. They’re just making it easier. And frankly, our governments are in one it, in fact driving it without telling us.

I have an ulterior motive. I’m setting up a DLNA server on my computer that will feed photos and video to my Bu-ray player for display on the TV in the livingroom. The Blu-ray player prefers almost everything but the format of some legacy video files I have. And the best choice to convert to is mp4, plain old MPEG-4, the up and coming standard for double HD TV and internet video. Hence my search for conversion to mp4.
DLNA, if you’re not familiar with the acronym stands for Digital Living Network Association and there are several good free DLNA servers that can handle the job. All you need is a device on your network that can act as the renderer and you’re in business, a Blu-ray player like mine or a so-called smart TV and others.
The only hitch is that my player knows nothing of .avi or .mov files that I’ve acquired over the years.
It’s been a fight all the way, nothing is documented well and most of it not at all — what’s new, right? I even had to fight with my firewall to allow unfettered communication with the player.
Like you, I have as little as I possibly can to do with anything Apple but it’s handy to have iTunes and Quicktime on the computer.

If that is really the case, then the increased rate of circulation is indicative of a dive into an ice age. The southern, circum-polar ocean currents brought about the “modern” era of ice ages by “installing” a freezer compartment for the planet.
The deep, deep, deep-freeze is around the Weddell Sea, on the edge of Antarctica as that is where the ocean currents try to meet to dispose of their heat. Although it’s colder in the interior of the continent, the heat capacity of the air moving over the cold land is not enough to cool more than half the planet. The oceans are far more effective; even being up to 80°C warmer than Antarctic air.
A stronger circulation of winds indicates that a deeper cold sink is in effect in the Antarctic; the thermal gradient is what drives the strength of winds. The cold ocean cell off the SW coast of Australia has been around since before the summer leading to a cooler, wetter summer than (some say) has not been seen since the 1960’s. [It’s still all natural variability.]

Interesting to note that James Cook and later Weddell sailed further south than we can today, and the Dalton Minimum fell in the middle of their explorations. There were huge icebergs in the southern ocean throughout the 19th century and I’m in need of a definitive answer on the causal mechanisms.

“Energy poverty is an environmental issue. An estimated 400,000 households in Ireland suffer from fuel poverty, which is defined as spending at least 10 per cent of your income on keeping your home warm and comfortable…
The scientific and moral arguments for urgently responding to climate change were also clearly presented…
At the Fuel Poverty conference, Naughten said the Warmer Homes scheme will soon offer “deeper renovations with solid wall insulation, mechanical ventilation systems and renewable heating solutions”. The SEAI expects these free upgrades will be offered to low-income families, beginning this summer…
“It’s difficult and expensive to identify the fuel poor on the doorstep, so the best solution might be an area-based approach. By including everyone, you get those who are hiding, those who are leading chaotic lives and wouldn’t self-refer to a scheme,” said Dr Brenda Boardman, emeritus fellow from the Environmental Change Institute, Oxford University…
One-third of the fuel poor are living in privately rented accommodation or rented local authority homes. And according to Boardman, the majority of those living in fuel poverty are in G-rated homes.
“We need to bring these homes up to A or B [Building Energy Rating]… If you can’t eradicate fuel poverty in the next six years, you can’t do climate change. Ireland needs to tackle 150,000 properties a year every year for the next 30 years,” she said…
As the focus turns to educating people on how to live more energy-efficiently in their homes, the European Commission will open its first think tank on energy poverty later in 2017. Harriet Thomson, the co-ordinator of the European Energy Poverty Observatory, said the institute will give people information on the extent of energy poverty across Europe and measures to combat it.
“It is widely agreed that energy poverty across Europe is due to high energy prices, low household incomes, inefficient buildings and appliances and specific household energy needs,” she told the Fuel Poverty and Climate Action conference…

More flooding rains were possible next week in New Zealand especially towards Thursday and Good Friday, Duncan said.
“When we think of cyclones we tend to think of major wind and rain events, however by the time they reach New Zealand more often than not it’s the rain that causes the bulk of the issues,” Duncan said.
“Cook is not a very big cyclone size-wise – but it has a huge amount of moisture wrapped around it.”
Later next week Cook’s rain belt will connect with a sizeable low in the Tasman Sea pulling in very heavy rains which will be heavy enough to cause further serious flooding in New Zealand.

Only today, there is a headline in the Daily Telegraph , “‘Zero prospect’ of recovery as Great Barrier Reef corals suffer bleaching for second successive year.” The headline alone is a slippery one, as it suggests that the entire reef is doomed, which is what both the climate “scientists” and the hack at the DT want readers to think. If you have lapped up all the other scares over the years, however, if you are convinced that more than seventeen million British voters are rabid brownshirts, if you suffer from full-blown Trump Derangement Syndrome and then put all that together with the things that actually are wrong in the world, you probably are having a bad day.
