Climate Distress? ABC offers therapy and forgiveness to failed Ecowarriors who still use plastic nappies and styrofoam cups

It’s all a bit much for snowflakes

The ABC is just a Lifestyle Magazine for the Upperclass, paid for by everyone else.

For twenty years the media EcoRulers told people they will destroy the Earth if they use disposable coffee cups and nappies.  Their whole identity as a Good Person depended on doing the right thing. And “every little bit matters” — etcetera, and ad nauseum.

Who would have guessed that asking people to save the Planet with every purchase would cause anxiety, a perpetual sense of failure, and long term stress?

And it never mattered anyway — the point was not the environment, but the political power. So now that hapless fans are being struck down with “Climate Distress”  — it’s time to forgive them.

Here’s the ABC Agony Aunt column letting all of them off the hook:

Climate distress is real and it’s rational. Here’s how to manage it

Edwina Seselja

While researching how to reduce her carbon footprint a few years back, Brisbane woman Zara Monteith quickly fell down an anxiety-inducing rabbit hole, with each search opening her eyes to a different environmental problem to try to solve.

Despite doing everything she could, Zara felt like nothing she did to reduce her consumption or environmental impact made a difference.

She saw a psychologist and said “I just can’t do anything”.  And the psychologists said ‘I feel the same way.'”

Now is not the time to mention that “every little bit helps”. The new approach is “nevermind“.

No-one is perfect

First up, recognise that you’re not always going to be able to make the environmental choice and be the perfect Instagrammable eco-warrior.

For some families disposable nappies are necessary, for some products styrofoam containers are unavoidable and on some days the air conditioner is going to run for much longer than the climate (or your wallet) would like.

Plan B is “cry”:

Dr Burke says emotion-focused coping means addressing the uncomfortable feelings like guilt or hopelessness.

She says this can be done by “moving” the stress hormones out of your body through actions.

“That might be things like having a cry —

So if you have to use disposable diapers, you can. Whole generations were raised on cloth nappies, but we can’t expect EcoWorriers to do that. Just like using your own mug rather than a styrofoam-dolphin-killing cup. It’s all too hard.

What matters is just that Ecoworriers are saying the right thing, they’re in the right Team, even if they can’t adopt all the symbolic tokens. No one really cared about the plants, the poor or the dolphins, they just wanted to look like they cared.

Perhaps if there was a pill they could take to feel better!! Lets invent “Soma” the one pill to cure everything. No one should have to face the trials and tribulations of life while feeling bad about themselves…..should they?

There needs to be more ‘red pilled’ people out there, its a very powerful drug that repairs the critical thought processes and spinal column and is absolutely free.

Unlike their ABC which for the cost is a very bitter pill to swallow.

Or given the damage Gang Green and those they have gulled are doing us,just maybe they need the pill for the people who worry about everything, all the time..
One little white pill to cure all their ills..

I suspect the folk who angst about disposable nappies never had kids themselves.

The thought of having to clean a soiled cloth nappy in anything other than a full blown biohazard suit gives me the screaming heeby jeebies.

As far as I’m concerned disposable nappies are right up there with iPhones and Netflix as miracles of modern living.

      A funny story.

I was a cruising yachtie, my lady was a Sydney city type when I met her. She joined me. When our daughter was about 5 months old we sailed from Townsville to Brisbane. This was cruising, anchored at night, stopped for a few days if the wind blew the wrong way or too hard, or if we found an isolated beach we liked.

She was a bit of a cupboard greenie, & did not like the idea of dumping disposable nappies at sea, or even burying them on an isolated island, so stocked up on cloth nappies.

Washing cloth nappies at sea without running water & a sewerage system, ie in a bucket is not that pleasant, so she had a brilliant idea. She attached a number of them to my mackerel line, & towed them along behind, to let nature, & the ocean wash them.

It certainly got rid of the brown stuff, but even the crystal clear pristine waters of the Great Barrier Reef did not return them as white as before, even after a hand washing in fresh warm water. She found this hard to understand, until one day she forgot them, & they spent a few hours washing behind the yacht.

When she retrieved them, she found not well washed nappies but a nasty concoction of nappy & dark green plankton sludge the nappies had filtered out of that crystal clear reef water. She suddenly realised that nature was not quite as pristine as she’d thought, & now knew why the nappies had not retained their whiteness when washed in it.

As the plankton sludge was no nicer than what it had replaced, she cut my good mackerel line & consigned the mess to the deep, where it promptly sunk.

She learnt many lessons from our boat. She became quite fond of a school of little fish that set up home under our boat when moored in Shute harbor. She would feed them bread crumbs & scraps they would dash out & grab when she threw it over the side. She was quite upset when she found they would also dash & grab schools of smaller fish when they drifted by on the tide.

Forty years later she is a wiser less naive lady, who knows nature is far from kind, or pristine, & has to be grabbed by the throat & shaken to extract anything good from it, [or her if you believe in mother nature], unless you live in a city high rise of course. You can believe almost anything up there in the clouds.

I guess she failed the training for ‘rational’ … and the ‘calm, objective focus on facts’ part as well …

‘Sink into your grief.’ How one scientist confronts the emotional toll of [global warming]

“I was trained to be calm, rational, and objective, to focus on the facts,” sustainability scientist Kimberly Nicholas recalls in her new book

In 2017, she and climate scientist Seth Wynes, now at Concordia University, published a high-profile paper showing the most effective actions to reduce an individual’s carbon footprint—such as flying less or shifting to a vegetarian diet—are rarely emphasized by governments or educators.

But it was the study’s finding that going childless could dramatically reduce a person’s contribution to global warming that generated headlines—and controversy—around the world.”

    >> If only her parents were as enthusiastic about saving the planet by going childless, the planet would be saved by now!

    That last paragraph sums it up;

“they just wanted to look like they cared.”

The scientific Truth about Absolutely Catastrophic Human Origin Man Made Global Warming is Knowable but for some reason we are banned from that higher knowledge.

Just ask Murray Salby, Peter Ridd and Bob Carter about the difficulties associated with countering unscientific science.

And yet, there is a simple scientific truth about our atmosphere that’s just waiting to be told.

    This is a start;

That’s the problem with the Climate Change Cult – it’s a philosophy of hopelessness. All they offer is endless reduction and restriction and it’s never enough. There’s no reward for effort or inspirational pathway to success and that’s why they’re set up to fail. They attack capitalism as if it’s hell-bent on destroying the earth, yet never stop to consider that their own path will lead to destruction for sure.

The already amazing advances in energy efficiency were only made possible because research was funded either directly by profitable businesses, or indirectly via taxpayer funded universities. And rich nations can afford to be cleaner. Even China is getting sick of living in their own filth.

Greta Thunberg is the perfect icon for the eco-warrior’s state of mind.

Some elements of the Left already have their own “Church of Euthenasia” to implement a more serious solution (from their point of view) to save the planet.

    The Church of Euthenasia

Its most popular slogan is “Save the Planet, Kill Yourself,” and its founding ideology is set in one commandment, “Thou Shalt not Procreate,” and four main pillars: suicide, abortion, cannibalism (of the already dead), and sodomy (“any sexual act not intended for procreation”). The church stresses population reduction by voluntary means only, and rejects murder and eugenics as a means of achieving it.

We have no genuine environmental problem in the West because anthropogenic global warming is a fraud. Secondary pollution such as litter is not common either in Western countries because people properly dispose of their garbage (with rare exceptions).

Litter is an extremely serious problem in Third World countries from a Westerner’s point of view, but not a Third Worlder’s point of view where litter is dumped everywhere, including in rivers where it ends up in the ocean. Third World litter and other pollution is exempt from complaints by the do-gooders.

In the West garbage goes to either landfill or in more advanced and rational countries (not Australia) is allowed to be burned in incinerators which use the heat for useful purposes.

There is no problem with landfill either. Contrary to popular beliefs there are plenty of sites available in countries like Australia or the US/Canada and landfill may become a valuable mineable resources for future generations as a source of raw materials such as hydrcarbos (from plastics) or metals.

We do however have a very serious problem with the education system which is producing vast numbers of mindless drones, incapable of independent thought or action, and who believe whatever garbage (pardon the pun) they are told.

      David,

Back in the 1980’s I saw a piece from a large chemical company (in the USA) which had become sick and tired of being accused of polluting the air, when the smells was caused by a huge rubbish dump next to their site. It was progressively covered with earth as one area was filled, but the surface would soon start heaving and releasing gases. They tested these gases and found a high concentration of methane, so arranged a series of pipes to remove the gases and burn them in their plants. Result end of smells, lots of cheap energy for them and a happier public.
      Wouldn’t be allowed these day.

Northen Europe is keen on burning household rubbish, it doesn’t reach a high enough temperature for electricity generation but is good for area hot water heating. Apartment blocks, swimming pools, de-icing roads and sporting fields etc. And by EU decree the resulting CO2 emissions don’t count (just like burning wood).

On the other side of the coin though dust being blown over the oceans can have a positive effect.

Do you think? I remember once on the Great Western Highway heading into Horsham Victoria – the dust-storm was huge, unbelievable. And on one farm beside the road there was a farmer dude out in his tractor ploughing the field, and all the disturbed soil was sailing away to New Zealand.

We were astonished … we commented on it to the pub manager in town when we stayed there – he said that a lot of farmers were pretty dumb … or words to that effect. I guess he would know.

That’s every education system. It takes a real world education to realise that not everyone is your friend, people take advantage, lie, cheat and steal. And the explosive growth in Universities has made this part of academia.

Science is a skeptical philosophy but it does not teach you to be a skeptic in your daily life, just to ask questions and want real answers. However it is a great grounding in skepticism which applied to tipping point runaway Amageddon Global Warming (aka Climate Change) makes you quickly realise it is a total scam. Especially after 33 years of it and not a single prediction come true.

I mean if world temperature was tied to steadily climbing CO2, why hasn’t world temperatures gone up in the last six years, even according to NASA. Six years is no short time, especially as we are our 4th 10 years to act last chance warning.

Sadly, the majority of people who abide by this app3al to save the planet are driven by emotion and are impervious to reason or facts – nothing will change their minds. If the ABC did actual research and presented the best of both sides hardly anyone would be consumed with guilt at creating more aerial fertilizer that feeds forests and crops and might, at worst, create a small amount of warming which is almost entirely beneficial.

““Men are disturbed not by things, but by the view which they take of them.”

The above quote captures the essence of Cognitive Behavioural Theory (CBT). Cognition refers to thinking. Cognitive Behavioural Theory talks about how cognition shapes behaviour and vice versa.

There’s a third component to the theory- feelings. CBT explains how thoughts, feelings, and behaviours interact.”

From time to time I participate in Clean Up Australia Day whereby volunteers go and clean litter from their local environment. It is a non-political charity but I must say I have only ever seen normal, rational people participate, never anyone that seemed to be a “committed green”. That’s a fairly typical observation that I’ve made of never seeing Leftists involved in or giving charity.

Also, I do a lot of bushwalking (hiking). I have never seen a green type participate in that either. I guess it’s too much like hard work.

Likewise the green types probably get their information about climate change from the ABC and similar, they don’t get out and see what real climate is.

A couple of weeks ago there was some discussion about the definition of climate. It was suggested that an IPCC or similar organisation had a definition that was about averages, average temperature, average rainfall etc. Those of us who live in the real world know that the average climate is fake climate, it very seldom happens, and if it did, that would be real climate change.

For example, from BOM records, I can see that the long term average rainfall for Townsville is about 93mm per month, that would be the IPCC definition of the rainfall component of climate, and any variation from that would be climate change. However, the real records show average monthly rainfall for Dec to Mar of 222mm and the average for Apr to Nov is 30mm. Any change from those sorts of rainfall patterns would be real climate change.

Yes Maptram, in the 60s we had an American firm that was in the tomato growing business in the US, move to our area to grow tomatos for a counter-cyclical supply. They moved to Griffith as the climate average was the same as their home base in Southern California. It was some 39 years later when having a conversation with the gentleman who was the prime mover of the local operation he lamented that they had been here for 39 years and had yet to have an average year.

More wonderful news on the booming Humpback whale population since 1970.
Numbers have increased to 40,000 compared to 1500 just 50 years ago. A lot of food for thought in those numbers, because we are told repeatedly by our media that we’re ruining the ocean environment.

And the discovery of fractioning saved the whales and other sources of oil, oil which is essential not just for power and lubrication but provided light in the dark. It’s only old plant matter returning to its original state, CO2 and water, releasing the stored solar energy. Nothing could be more natural than oil, whether from the ground or sunflower seeds or oil from olives which lit the Roman empire. The only argument is that we are using it too fast, but that is not true. The total human output is tiny compared with the massive CO2 exchange in the biosphere anyway.

No one is praising oil and coal and gas. No one points out that coal as coke saved the forests of Europe, saved the whales, saved the forests. The demonization of carbon dioxide continues largely by people who do not understand Green is chlorophyll which is also a long chain hydrocarbon.

Looking back on it all I have to wonder where we would be if the ten trillion dollars wasted on solar panels and windmills and distribution, blots on the landscape all, was spent on mastering nuclear fusion. That would be the end of our need for energy. But the Green druids and their lawyers and bankers say no.

The same thing happened in Uganda under Idi Amin. He expelled the Indian population. People stripped the store and they did not magically refill. The trains did not run because they were run by the Indians. The place came to a shuddering halt and the zoos were emptied as food.

You see if you get rid of all the hard working rich educated and qualified people who know how to run things, no one has a job and it all falls apart and everyone is equally poor. And starving. Pol Pot taught us that. And Stalin’s last pogrom was against the Jewish doctors, which is why he died. Apart from Beria’s poison. Like Robespierre, he was the last victim of his own terror, itself justified by communism.

And today’s baying mob are the usual protestors against everything demanding something now called Climate Justice. Soon there will be a new group of Marvel superheroes, the Climate Justice League. 81

          • #

My point, which was too subtle for George and seemingly yourself, is that focusing on one aspect is simplistic and wrong.

Shark are part of an ecosystem that is affected by human and non-human factors in all sort of ways including depleting fish stocks that shark feed off. So shark numbers are low (though big shark numbers are higher, though still low, in some regions than previously) AND whale numbers are low AND food lower down the chain is low. Historical accounts, which includes some systematic surveys, suggests that both shark and whale (and seals and porpoise etc) were in much larger numbers hundreds of years ago. Sharks eating whale would have been a more common occurrence.

This article as bizarre as it is, is in fact the most obvious way to kill the catastrophic climate change meme. Even if you believe in it there is nothing you can do about it. On sky last light Nicholas Rease was asked by Mark Latham how much does the temperature drop if we take all this action. Because he knew the answer all he could really say was , but everyone has to do their bit. Rita then added the data about how many coal fired power plants China was building and basically they have made no commitments to doing their bit and you could sense Nicholas’s brain trying to reconcile his commitment to doing something and the clear and obvious futility of it all.
The world has to focus on this total futility to knock some sense that everything we do except go totally nuclear will not make a difference and will cause severe damage to the economic and social well being of society. The trillions of dollars diverted into this insane pursuit of lowering the temperature could be better served providing education and social benefits for those in need. And then if the temperature does indeed sky rocket then at least the world will not be made destitute during its last few decades of existence. Futility is a great motivator to do nothing which ironically may be the best antidote for this climate change craziness.

Neville, the moderation filter is catching and locking up a few people accidentally, and we are as baffled as you are. I assure you. Unfortunately the higher powers of the Gods of Filtering have changed their algorithm. Some people escape the claws by changing slightly their name or their email. Others have to change their IP. We don’t know if some people are collecting “badness points” on other sites and the global filter follows them here. We don’t know if this is a glitch caused by updating the site in December. We don’t know if it’s part of the great global censoring, or a quirk of the shift to bigger longer IP’s.

So a message to commenters, if you get caught, assume it’s an accident first. The mods will try to suggest things you can do to get around it.

This quote from Ridley’s talk about co2 warming and clouds is very interesting. What if higher temps lead to more cloud cooling? Here’s Ridley’s quote.

“The sensitivity of the atmosphere to CO2 is about 1.2C per doubling. That is the consensus, spelled out clearly (if obscurely) by the IPCC several times over the years. And that’s what we are on course for at the moment.

So what is the problem? Well, the theory of dangerous climate change depends on a whole extra step in the argument, one that very few politicians and journalists seem even to know about – the supposed threefold amplification of carbon dioxide’s warming potential, principally by extra water vapour released into the atmosphere by a warming ocean, and accumulating at high altitudes.

This is where the evidence is much more shaky. Some studies find an increase in water vapour high in the atmosphere, others do not. One complication is that water vapour condenses into clouds and we cannot either measure or model clouds anything like adequately yet.

We know that clouds keep the surface warm at night, while low clouds in particular cool it during the day by reflecting sunlight back into space. But whereas the models generally claim that there is a positive correlation between the net cloud radiative effect and temperature, boosting the water vapour amplification, NASA’s CERES data show that there is a strong and significant, negative correlation: that higher temperatures lead to more cloud cooling. That’s a glaring discrepancy between models and data.

Consistent with these discrepancies, recent attempts to measure the sensitivity of the climate system to carbon dioxide using real data nearly all find that it is much lower than the models assume, as Nic Lewis, Marcel Crok, Judith Curry and Pat Michaels have shown in recent years”.

    61

    • #
      Kalm Keith

      Hi Neville,

That quote gives the discussion away immediately.

“The sensitivity of the atmosphere to CO2 is about 1.2C per doubling.”

That’s an IPCCCCC misconception or more accurately, a big lie.

CO2 doesn’t cause global warming, end of story, so the concept of “doubling” is baseless.

The concept of “amplification” was a late creation in the Wobal Glorming fairy story and was invented after the original CO2 monster was shown to be a joke.

Next year we will probably be assailed with the terror of interference with CO2 by runaway switching of the s, p, d and f orbitals of the central carbon atoms.

Oh the horror; more research is needed.

      It’s all fake.

Control is the whole raison d’etre.

If you didn’t know that CO2 was what provided the “carb” in carbohydrates, OUR FOOD supply, you wouldn’t pass to the 5th grade. ALL green plants on Earth, take in nutrients and moisture from the soil, and CO2 from the air, to Grow. Without the CO2, there would be NO plants, and NO FOOD.

In my opinion, she is playing a dangerous game which could cut off future prospects.

All those ridiculously well paid and privileged posts are political, private or public. Was the salary still over $20,000 a day?
And the poor lady possibly only received $20Million for her roughly four years as a public servant.

She was just surprised, which is the real surprise. And this job is in the no mans land between private and public in a time of great change and stress. Of course it was risky to walk out of Blackmores and expect a job for life. And Australia Post went through some tough times, but you expect that on $42 a minute, all expenses paid.

Life expectancy in such a high flying job? Commonly 2 years. If you last 5 years, you are plotting against the plotters. Someone always has to take the fall. However having secured the job, her departure is now sexism. Same with Raelene Castle. Same with Julia Gillard.

Ahmed Fahour lasted 8 years though on a salary of $5.6Million a year. As a Lebanese Australian, he did not complain about racism. He took his $50Million and moved on. Roughly the same as Australia Posts record loss that year. It’s hard to feel sorry for either of them.

It is amazing how there is no glass ceiling as a woman until you lose the job. Then you are a suffragette. Men who lose the same job have to find another. And it pays to either plot against the plotters or apply for your next job on the day you get the first one. No one is worth $5Million a year to do a job.

True, but the stupidest thing is that if she had coolly and rationally replied that grand bonuses paid out in the public service and sweet handshakes are a magnitude or so larger and are the real problem — she could have taken the assertive attack rather than be defensive. She could have exposed a bigger and more important problem with our national debate and made the attackers feel ashamed. Instead she offered no insight, caved weakly, and now post hoc, is amplifying a dumb “optics” angle.

She didn’t deserve that leadership position in the first place. She’s let all women down. Does a man in her position complain of being bullied, as if high paid individuals in charge of our national institutions are above criticism?

The rabid mob came for her, and now she joins another rabid mob. She is no leader.

the PM, fresh from another pay rise, could have given that same defense. He chose to attack and the media did not seek out Ms Holgate for an opinion.

So he had another pay rise? Our Prime Minister’s new salary is $549,000. That’s half of many of the department heads and Fahour took home $5.6 million in a company he led to a $50Million loss.

Her predecessor was paid 11x the salary of our Prime Minister. We expect a lot for that money. I do not know what her salary was, but it was nowhere near as low as our PM. And the US President is paid only $400,000 a year. Trump gave his salary away.

And the PM’s political job lasts only four years, with no guarantees that it lasts that long. Politics is a risky business.

No, she is complaining about being one of the highest paid women in Australian history, as a public servant. All care we hope but ultimately no responsibility. Holgate is no suffragette. Whatever she achieved, she was extremely well rewarded. It must be very annoying to be brought down for no more than a day’s wages, $20,000.

Nice distraction. She is complaining about being sacked and the PM’s abuse of power.

Odd. You introduced pay as an issue. Now it is a distraction? Agreed.

And she is hardly a struggling postie, which she was at 18. She earned more in a week than a postie earns in a year. Or most people, male or female. More than the top QCs in Australia or top surgeons and vastly more than most Managing directors. Plus she could have bought those watches from her own massive income, not with our money. Like Icarus, you can fly too close to the sun and fall. Nothing to do with gender or abuse of power or a glass ceiling.

Good point. “On 2 November 2020, she offered her resignation, stating that she would not seek financial compensation. A subsequent inquiry found that there was no identified policy that would support provision of Cartier watches.”

So now the Prime Minister is a villain and she is a victim because of gender and dresses in all white? What changed?

All main plastics are made from oil or coal as such are a good heat source for a furnace of the right design for power generation or for any purpose.
It has been found that plastic entering the ocean has a bunch of little critters out there that break it down and eat it.
Therefore it would seem that plastic is a benefit and not a problem. In the same way that extra CO2 is not a problem but a benefit to the planet.

Do you get paid by the plastics industry to say such things?

NOT WELL SAID JO. What do you know about leadership? Not much, it seems. I support Holgate in this debacle. ScoMo should not have thrown her to the wolves, and the AusPost Board should have stood up to him, at least until any investigation occurred. Holgate could have awarded $600K in bonuses, but instead gave out $20K of watches. What’s the problem? In this situation, a Board (public OR private) MUST support the CEO until any sort of criminality is proven. This did not happen.

I checked out the “climate distressed” hippy, Zara Monteith, who was the subject of the article. She claimed she was doing her best for the environment.

So, it transpires that she’s a graphic designer who worked on a campaign to promote a, wait for it…..
