Warning shots fired at Christie/ Spencer UAH Building?

News just coming in suggests someone took some pot shots at the building the UAH satellite data is analyzed in.

Shots Fired into the Christy/Spencer Building at UAH

April 24th, 2017 by Roy W. Spencer, Ph. D.

A total of seven shots were fired into our National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC) building here at UAH over the weekend.

All bullets hit the 4th floor, which is where John Christy’s office is (my office is in another part of the building).

Given that this was Earth Day weekend, with a March for Science passing right past our building on Saturday afternoon, I think this is more than coincidence. When some people cannot argue facts, they resort to violence to get their way.

Maybe the “March For Science” should have been called the “March To Silence”.

More discussion at Roy Spencers Blog and also at WUWT.

Roy Spencer adds in an email:

I doubt any media have covered it yet. I doubt the police have even written a report yet. From what I’ve heard, it sounds like the police believe the shots were fired from a passing car, and some shell casings were recovered, as well as fragments of bullets inside the building. You can quote me.
Things that feed mindless hate: Namecalling, poor science education  and mangled English. When the old accurate meanings are destroyed, there is almost no chance of a proper conversation. How can two views be reconciled when people don’t speak the same language?
Best wishes to Roy, John and the whole team. If this suspicious event happened to a believer it would be front page hyperbole, “Death Threats to Climate Scientists.”

I hate to bring up the subject but perhaps this will let at least some of those who don’t understand our love of our Second Amendment which guarantees the right to own firearms something to think about. This is not that many steps removed from taking a shot at Dr. Christy in person. Should he arm himself and practice until he could have a chance to draw and get an attacker before he was shot instead? Well that’s his decision to make. But when it comes to this point, I would rather go down with a fighting chance than with no chance at all.

And lest you think this is exaggerated. We have had someone shot in the past over as little as a few gallons of gas.

My good wishes for their safety to everyone at the center and the university that houses it.

Guns, knives, firebombs, trucks, it’s irrelevant. When the lunatics of the Left don’t like someone’s opinions, then they consider any action justified. Just note the idiotic scare that was raised some years ago when someone at a dinner in Canberra said they now had a licence to shoot roos. ANU went into lockdown because the ‘climate scientists’ now feared for their lives because of a completely misconstrued statement.

My thought would be that we are winning, which is why they are showing their true thug nature.

As to being armed- I fully endorse it. Why should you sit there like a sheep to the slaughter? Incidentally, there is no inconsistency between armed self defence and Christianity, namely as human life is sacred and needs to be defended from any and all threats. Note it doesn’t endorse proactive use of force.

So yes, Dr Christy could conceal carry, and let the next thug try it on and see what happens.

Unfortunately, which is partly why I made the Australian reference, it’s always the innocent party that is affected by the Leftist violence. I don’t believe that in Australia you can truly defend yourself if attacked, the courts will always consider whether your defending actions were justified, excessive, whatever. Just consider how easily violent protesters have gotten away with no punishment for their actions.

That’s why one should carry some sort of video recording device to take a record of any event that might threaten yourself or those surrounding you. I’m thinking of using a spy camera planted on my clothing. A smart phone is too obvious and might attract even more violence.

My view is that the wearing of any facial covering (including hoodies – not all who wear hoodies are criminals, but all criminals wear hoodies) at any rally, march, protest or whatever be illegal. Anyone wearing any form of facial covering should be instantly arrested, conveyed to the nearest house of confinement and subsequently undergo a full recording of personal details before release and possible fine. Any acts of violence undertaken while covered should incur immediate time at Her Majesty’s pleasure.

I beg you reconsider this idea – the right to privacy is a human need, to strip people of such a right , regardless whether a few abuse it, is the start of a slippery slope…..

I don’t see anyone, without medical reasons, needing to wear a hoodie in the middle of an Australian summer. But if you’re attending a protest meeting or the like, covering your face and wearing a hoodie is a sure indication that you are potentially up to no good.

If you wish privacy, don’t go to protest meetings, riots etc. There is too much discussion about protecting the rights of criminals, rather than the victims.

Roy Hogue: I suspect Roy Spencer may have a licence; he seems particularly well informed about guns.

There are 2 issues here. Firstly ALL the violence is coming from alarmism; not only overt violence like this but bullying, censorship and typical tribalised behaviour. Sceptical scientists have been silenced by these tactics. You can’t beat these people with reason or civilised discourse. You have to litigate, infiltrate the institutions and get control of the media.

Alarmism and all the left wing issues are the product of years of incremental effort.

The second issue is self protection. If these people are not caught both Spencer and Christie should do everything to protect themselves including self-arming. Fortunately they live in nation and a state which allows that right:

Utah allows for open carry of unloaded firearms without a concealed firearm permit. “Unloaded” as it applies here, means that there is no round in the firing position (or chamber), and the firearm is at least two “mechanical actions” from firing.

        cohenite,

I just read Roy Spencer’s addendum to his original statement and it looks like he is well trained and practiced with a pistol.

We’ve all watched as the bullying turned to things like 10-10 with their exploding student and threats that could have only been meant for Jo. Now we have this which I don’t think is a random shooting any more than I think it’s a birthday party. Who occupies the 4th floor must be well known and Spencer and Christie are two of the most vilified men by fanatics on the other side of the disagreement. I would think the University of Alabama owes them body guards.

    I am truly shocked!
What mentality does it take to shoot at a building that houses scientists, researchers, academics, and administrators? What possible motive could the perpetrator have for this obscene act of violence? This makes no sense, it is both an outrage and madness, The kind of madness previously only endorsed by authoritarian dictatorships.
Roy and John keep yourselves and your loved ones safe, we are living through difficult times.

There are sadly a significant proportion of people who cannot and do not think or act rationally. They operate entirely on their own feelings, while often lacking empathy (as in sociopathy), but have no rational goal and are thus impervious to reason.

By chance this evening in Granada Spain I fell into conversation with an elderly lady from Chicago. During our discourse she mentioned climate change a few times to which I did not respond but noted that she was worried and afraid because Chicago had only two days of snow this winter (this was true). I was struck by her obvious anxiety about this and to me showed how deep the AGW cancer has metastased into the psyche of middle America. This had not though prevented her numerous flights to Europe though I was too polite to bring this up. however this breaking news is of no surprise to me and I fear there will be worse to come.
Roy at #1; I was in SF when that event took place . It was during one of the early “oil shocks” when gas was rationed daily according to your odd or even plate number and was the consequence of frustration escalating to lethal violence.

The sleep of reason brings forth monsters

And reason is sound asleep I fear.

And you’re right about the shooting I mentioned. Of course, we have many other shootings over an equally unjustifiable cause. The two main reasons seem to be,

      1. I want my way, to hell with you.
      2. I just want to make a big man of myself and shooting someone will do it.

It looks like a message, a warning rather than an attempt to do bodily harm. Or maybe just striking out in anger at some of the most vilified men in climate research with little or no thought to the consequences. But it was at night according to the information Jo published so there was no one there to be harmed.

With all the hate and fear being generated by the left and amplified and broadcast by the media here, it isn’t surprising. Most likely cowards doing a drive by in the night. Don’t expect much coverage, if any, from the leftist NY based media. I would not be surprised to see more over time.

The left really is cracking up before our eyes. They have very little political power in the halls of the elected in National government and only control 5 states. The democrats have not been so weak in this nation since the 1920s. They have always relied upon the courts to advance their agenda when they couldn’t get what they want by legislation and to foil the effects of conservative legislation, but they correctly perceive that the balance of power in the Supreme court will be swinging to the right as their old justices die or retire and Trump nominates new ones.

So all they have are demonstrations, their press, and the installed allies in the bureaucracy, and violence as we have seen at UC Berkley. Why would one not expect the more deranged leftist to become desperate and act on their fears?

One should note that the 1920s also saw the peak of another Democratic Party terrorist organization. The modern incarnation, of course, wears black to conceal their identities, not white.

Whenever they feel threatened with extinction, they have always turned to violence.

You don’t have to tell this Hoosier about that. I was born in Elwood, IN and still live in Madison County. (For those that don’t know, central Indiana had the largest per capita membership in the KKK in the early 20’s and the largest Klan rally in history took place in Elwood, IN July 4th, 1923). The last visible vistages of an organized KKK were not wiped out of this county until the early 80s when a barn that was their meeting house out by Perkinsville was burned down. If they meet here now it’s in secret. The nice park in Elwood that was the center for the activities for the several Klan rallies including the largest is still there. During WW II the park was turned into a camp for interred German and Italian nationals. Today it is once again a wonderful park full of old oaks trees.

Most of my mothers side of the family still lives there and we’re a relatively close family and I don’t believe there is an overt racist among them. My mother, also born in Elwood in the 30s most certainly has never been a racist. My first family doctor she took to me that I remember was a black man. Now days there are several black families in the town and a Catholic Church. But Elwood will always be known for two prominent things. The location of the largest Klan rally in history and as the birth place of Wendell Willkie, a prominent lawyer and business executive that was the Republican Nominee for president in 1940. Willkie, unlike the majority of the people and politicians in both parties of the time was an interventionist that just like FDR desired to push the limits of neutrality. After he lost to FDR he, at the Presidents request, toured the country giving speeches to drum up support for US aid to Great Britain during her desperate time of need when she and her dominions and Canada faced Hitler alone.

I responded (reply to David A.) just a bit ago:

Most cities have laws against guns being fired. Outside of cities shots across roads is not allowed. Likewise aiming at buildings is against laws, as is toward places where people can be expected.

However, I would interpret this to be either a jerk misbehaving, or someone wanting to make known their views of John Christy’s work.

Regardless of the possible interpretations, a crime was committed.

Polls related purely to opinions, are notorious for getting weird results. People want to feel that they have the “right” opinion, you see. It is all in the way the questions are worded.

The CSIRO, and/or the professional pollsters they hired, will know that, so it is probably a political stitch-up.

We might or might not have nature on our side but that’s beside the point. People are polarised into two broad groups – one is for freedom and liberty (as distinct form liberal) and the other is for control and socialism (of which there are many varieties). The latter always wins according to history for a number of reasons – at least for the short to medium term. I’m afraid things will get much worse before they get better, which they will in the longer run.

Can’t use that poll since it was stacked, but most polls put belief at around 55%. But that is belief in AGW, CAGW is another matter, when asked whether they would voluntarilly pay for “Climate Action” polls show 90% won’t and more than 50% of greens voters won’t. This is the poll that counts. People own solar panels not to fight climate change but because they hope to overall save money on their electricity bills because of the government ripping money off the poor and renters to give to the land owners with panels. It’s not Robin Hood, more like the sheriff of Nottingham buddy scheme.

Look at the mess they’ve made of the electricity supply, tropical forests, in fact any forests being rapidly reduced to wood ‘pellets’, the urban environment (with diesel fumes) and the lives of poor people without the right skin colour ( mosquito plaques, ban on golden rice etc.), and increased death rates among elderly people with the ‘right’ skin colour but the wrong voting pattern.

Did not the ‘science’ of eugenics in the 1930s provide the facade of dubious scientific respectability to the atrocities of that era.

Today the facade of dubious respectability appears to be climatism, and the deranged belief that rising atmospheric CO2 levels causing the imperilment of life and humankind’s future.

    140

    • #
      TdeF

Not so much deranged. It is definitely a very remote possibility of having some tiny effect but so?

First though you have to show that mankind has much effect on CO2 levels and that has never been shown, just assumed by everyone.
It is demonstrably wrong. Unfortunately you can now say that spending $1,500,000,000,000 a year has no effect on CO2 levels.

Then there is the idea that no one can explain recent (tiny) temperatures changes? As National Geographic says in this month’s cover story, 7 things you must know about Climate Change, the 11 year solar cycle is not involved, so it can’t be the sun. In fact just about everything in the unbalanced alarmist article is utterly wrong, textbook Al Gore propaganda. However they do not mention the amazing Dr Weiss analysis.

A lifetime of enjoying National Geographic is being marred by the entire staff being captured by Global Warming Groupthink. The tipping point of the Ecopolypse has even been invented again at 400ppm of CO2. It is really sad to see such nonsense in such a foundation magazine. Then there was the time they were fooled by the fabricated feathered dinosaur from Mongolia and ran it as the lead article. They know not what they do. I hope.

I would strongly suggest watching the Weiss video. The fit is amazing, not just to the recent past but seven cycles before it over 2,500 years. With a fit this good and really just one driving cycle, the 250 years De Vries cycle, it is certain we have our explanation. The supplementary cycle of 25 years is a driven cycle in the Pacific Decadal Osciallation.

Of course what is missing is CO2. Also Milankovitch and a lot of other cycles, nutation, dust clouds and much more. It does not go far enough to predict the ice ages, but it does beautifully describe recorded human history. Staggering really.

It even get the pause right! Unfortunately it predicts a rapid drop as well but we can always burn a lot of fossil fuel and prevent it?

Sure, it was under Dr Weiss above but I will make it longer

On the priciple of Occam’s razor, he has cracked it. While Fourier analysis might throw up cycles and you could fit an elepant with enough components, only two were need and both are well known. Only one is a solar cycle and the other is the famous PDO. The chance of coming up with one solar cycle explaining everything is very low.

Also interesting is that “The 210 year Suess cycle (a.k.a. “de Vries cycle”). This cycle is recorded from radiocarbon studies”. Dr Suess was possible the same inventor of the Carbon dating technique which also proves there is no fossil fuel CO2 in the air. This has many implications like a measure of solar intensity driving C14 formation.

I mean the chance of coming up with only one major cycle is very low and the chance of it being exactly a known cycle is confirmation of the conclusion. I would not have been surprised with ten major cycles producing a good fit. There should be partying with this discovery of the bleeding obvious.

I would say longer range patterns involve the Milankovitch Cycles although the periodicity of Ice Ages seems to have changed in the last million years for unknown reasons.

              TdeF

True, but these people were not researching the ice ages. The quality of data must decrease with time too.

What they were doing was to apply the analysis in which they are expert to a problem which is causing major disruption around the world, not global warming but the absurd idea that we are causing the change in CO2 and that this is catastropic. After thirty years of this, surely even the most ardent must be asking questions. There is simply nothing wrong. To blame the war in Syria on CO2 is Monty Python silly. Surely you’re not Syrious. Risible.

Media claims of the hottest recent years try to hide the fact that the are talking of hundredths of a degree and the temperature is just not changing.

We now have an explanation so simple it is laughable. It’s the sun. QED

        Yes, TdeF,

I also note that Alan Carlin has put out his second report, and it completely refutes and rebuffs the basic tenets that the UN uses for their theory of rising CO2 level causing adverse climate.
        See more at https://tallbloke.wordpress.com/2017/04/24/alan-carlin-second-edition-of-path-breaking-research-report-shows-the-orwellian-nature-of-the-march-for-science/

Alan Carlin BS in physics from the California Institute of Technology and a PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is ex-RAND and ex-EPA employee and ex-member of California Sierra Club.

The NWO is attempting to being down the west from inside, plus also through an engineered clash of civilisations.

Why do you think that despite protests from vocal people in the military here in oz, that a certain day in April each year keeps the military in a near “sacred” position within the oz psyche? The answer is simple – humans are seen by the NWO as parasites and rely on peoples willingness to go to war to cull then…evil and clever…..but its a pot you need to religiously keep on the boil all the time…..

From what I’ve heard, it sounds like the police believe the shots were fired from a passing car, and some shell casings were recovered, as well as fragments of bullets inside the building.

A leading Casing Scientist with the Federal Open Borders Commission was quick to point out that the shell observation system used by police had numerous systematic biases that had to be corrected and that, after homogenisation of the casings, it was clear that the wall had shot at the gun.

Remember the “death threats” to Steffen’s ANU climate mob which were so excitably trumpeted by the ABC? Which turned out to be a conversation about kangaroo culling?

I wonder if the ABC will likewise excitably report this event of someone shooting at a sceptical climate scientist’s office?

People don’t realise yet but the ABC is actually fighting to destroy the Australia we knew and replace it with a socialistic dictatorship by continually spewing out propaganda in a batter and far more efficient way than any old Soviet propaganda machine. It still works very well thanks to a lot of sleeping and non-thinking Australians. The irony of it all is a so called conservative party (hahaha) is in governemtn and still funding it with our tax paid money. It really should be sold off.

Communists have been surprising successful in using brutal violence and/or pseudo-intellectual sophistication to promote their agenda after nations and national academies of sciences inherited their first dose of group-think (Lysenkoism) directly from the old USSR on 24 Oct 1945.

That was when nations and national academies of sciences were united to save the world after Stalin’s troops captured the world’s remaining supply of atomic bombs from Japan (actually in Konan, Korea) in Aug 1945:

      https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10640850/The_Atlanta_Constitution_3_Oct_1946.htm

That is why today, no member of the national academies of sciences will publicly admit or deny:

      1. The logical error Weizsäcker and Chadwick made in 1935 by denying Rutherford’s 1920 assertion the neutron is “an electron-proton pair in close-combination” and

      2. The actual energy released in every known beta-decay is exactly:

      _ a.) 0.782 MeV greater than Weizsäcker-Chadwick predicted for electron-emission, and

      _ b.) 0.782 MeV less than Weizsäcker-Chadwick predicted for positron-emission or electron-capture

    5.7mm hey?
Only 2 firearms use this round. The FN Five Seven handgun, and the P90 /PS90 PDW/ rifle.
The US Secret Service issues the (full auto) P90 to their agents. Anyone in the States can buy a PS90 (semi-auto only version), same with the handgun.
Unusual round to use to shoot at some office windows like this, as it would be one of the least commonly held calibre in the community.
    Just sayin’

Very odd gun. Perhaps it was totally unconnected to the march? The frontage of the building is about 100 metres/yards and four storeys high, half glass and about 100metres/yards from the highway. It would be hard to miss with a handgun. There is no evidence of a connection to the function of the building or intent, is there? In Australia this would be deemed deliberate. Would that be the case in Alabama?

MSM actually cheered Nye for the following!

23 Apr: American Thinker: Thomas Lifson: CNN criticized on Earth Day for daring to air a climate skeptic
There was a certain melancholy about Earth Day 2017. The decades of failed predictions of doom, those damn frackers giving us cheap gas back, and now the Trump administration cutting regulations. No wonder some of the front men are getting a little testy.
Like Bill Nye, the guy who doesn’t have a science degree. Matthe Balan of Mediaite caught him revealing his inner authoritarian:
TV personality Bill Nye criticized CNN on New Day Saturday for letting a skeptic of man-made climate change participate in a panel discussion.
“I will say, much as I love CNN, you’re doing a disservice by having one climate change skeptic, and not 97 or 98 scientists or engineers concerned about climate change,” Nye contended.
Nye appeared with May Boeve of the green action group 350.org and Princeton University physics professor William Happer, who has downplayed the impact of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. So despite the two-to-one slant in favor of the environmentalists, the former PBS host wasn’t satisfied.

25 Apr: AFR: Reuters; Sophie Hares: Climate change offers huge investment opportunity, Al Gore tells World Bank
Climate change should be grasped as an opportunity to attract vast capital flows into low-carbon investments, create jobs and spur economic growth, rather than viewed as a money-absorbing burden, top officials and experts say.

Trillions of dollars are potentially available for climate investments and countries like India are blazing a trail in bringing cheap solar power to millions, but making sure the world’s poorest benefit will prove a big challenge, a World Bank meeting heard late last week.
“It’s the biggest opportunity in the history of the world – it’s the biggest investment opportunity, but we have to have a clear vision, we have to have policy leadership… to bring the world community together to get the financing that is needed to move the momentum more quickly,” former US Vice President Al Gore told the discussion…
“Quite apart from what you think about climate change, there are opportunities for investments that will give you higher yield than any of those investments in which over $US40 trillion is sitting right now,” (World Bank president Jim Yong) Kim said…

25 Apr: WashingtonExaminer: Philip Wegmann: Liberal protest mob storms Heritage Foundation
More than a tantrum, this is a significant shift in the direction of the reiterating protests that have continued non-stop since Trump took office…
Around 200 protestors flooded into Heritage’s Capitol Hill headquarters an hour before noon Tuesday, screaming that they were going to shut down the think tank. While opposition to Trump’s budget was the headline of the demonstration, they didn’t let that stifle their creativity. “Our solution to pollution is the people’s revolution,” they chanted before switching over to the more succinct, but no less vague, cadence of “water not walls.”…

The flash anarchy strategy appears to be organized by an organization called the ***People’s Action Institute. And while that group certainly has great passion they demonstrated very little endurance. They were in and out in less than 20 minutes.
That was just long enough for the whole stunt to ironically backfire. Heritage ran a full court press on the protest. They posted a ***live stream (LINK) of the protest, used the event to plug a policy paper (LINK), and their staffers offered a dozen snarky takes (LINK) on Twitter…
The immediate and ironic result will be a boost to Heritage’s bottom line as conservative donors reach for their checkbooks while their blood boils. The long-term consequences are more troubling. After three months of Trump demonstrations, it’s clear the protests aren’t stopping and won’t always be civil from now on.

“The climate crisis is here. And it’s been here. Take a look at the coal plants and waste incinerators surrounding black neighborhoods, like in Cincinnati where residents die 20 years younger than their neighbors in whiter and less polluted neighborhoods.” …
Just as Trump carries on a legacy of exploitation, we will carry on a legacy of resistance. We won’t stop until we see a transition to a democracy and an economy that work for all of us and ensure all of our safety, health and security.”…
