I believe that one of the reasons for Venice flooding more often is the enlargement in the openings in the offshore barrier, to allow larger cargo vessels to enter the adjacent port. Also I believe more openings were created for this freight movement. This seems to have resulted in large inflows through the barrier, which in the past, due to its narrow entrances, limited the tidal inflows.
