China hit by strongest cold wave since 1987

The weather in northern China changed dramatically at the end of last week, leaving at least 7 people dead and hundreds of thousands of livestock stranded after exceptionally cold temperatures hit the province of Xinjiang. At the same time, southern China was experiencing a rare heat wave with temperatures exceeding 35 °C (95 °F) in some places. The cold wave entered South China on November 29, dropping temperatures more than 20 °C (36 °F) in just 24 hours.

In Altay, Xinjiang Province, the lowest temperature on Saturday, November 26 dropped to -48.6 °C (-55.5 °F) — close to the country’s lowest record for the month of November. It was the region’s 7th consecutive day of snow, with a record-breaking November snow depth of 46 cm (18 inches) measured.

Here on the NSW Mid Coast today I need a track suit top over the teeshirt I first put on this morning, it’s hardly the beginning of summer today.

Lucky you; as that high that’s giving you nice southerlies moves towards the Tasman (bloody slowly) here in SA we shall get NE to NW’ly airstreams from tomorrow resulting in 4 hot days in a row. Ugh.

In NZ currently the cow cockies are all moaning about the lack of pasture growth.
That is the case even where there has not been excessive rain ; rain in December is definitely a positive as we approach the summer solstice in three weeks time.
It appears to me that the cause is a lack of sunlight ; we have had very few sunny cloudless days.
Grass is described as ” weak , yellow , lacking in energy” , and milk production shows it.
And the ultimate stupidity is to throw nitrogen fertiliser at the problem , thus exacerbating the feed quality problem.

I am actually selling a hundred acres or so of surplus grass , achieved by lengthening the spelling interval between grazings , just as one would do in winter or low light conditions.
Of course , a conservative stocking rate , and adequate reserves, are part and parcel of a resilient system.
Agrostology 101 , you might think.

I have been complaining about lack of sunshine and low grass growth. I’m spending a fortune on Nitrogen.

Nitrogen won’t be the limiting factor ; sunlight is. Feed quality won’t be improved by more nitrogen in that situation.
You’ve probably noticed that cows are ravenous for some mature growth with some”guts” in it .
I’ve always relied on the nitrogen cycle and clover for nitrogen input to the system ; in a year round daily quota system it’s all about the cost of production.
But farmers who milk year round know that reserves are a critical must-have ; it can be money , or feed. I always carry at least one years silage reserve ahead of me , sometimes more.

My father lived through dry droughts and wet droughts as a farmer in southern Victoria. He much preferred dry droughts. ( wet droughts is when it rains that much and is cold, nothing grows ). The 1960’s in particular were extremely wet.

Extremes in weather are caused by a meandering jet stream and blocking, so if we look at the Atlantic the pattern is the same except a negative North Atlantic Oscillation is involved.

‘Evolution of a titanic negative North Atlantic oscillation (-NAO) pattern is indicated during the medium-range. The effect of -NAO is to produce anomalous upper-level high-pressure blocking over Greenland. The high-pressure block is certainly evident in the “most likely” upper air forecast for the northern hemisphere by the mega-cluster ensemble in the 6-10-day forecast.

‘In the 11-15-day forecast, the blocking high pressure is arguably record-strength according to the model and forecast with a robust 68% confidence which is exceptional beyond 10 days.’ (Climate Impact Company)

THE PURSUIT OF THE IMPOSSIBLE: Materials Constraints and Realities for the Net Zero Utopia

In late 2021, a group led by Simon Michaux of the Geological Survey of Finland produced a 1000-page “Assessment of the Extra Capacity Required of Alternative Energy Electrical Power Systems to Completely Replace Fossil Fuels” (link at bottom to pdf.) The focus of the study is almost entirely on determining the magnitude of the physical material requirements of decarbonization. Here are some of the findings.

The global fleet of road vehicles in 2019 numbered about 1.416 billion. Of this, only 7.2 million were electric vehicles (EV). Thus, only 0.51% of the road vehicle fleet were EVs and 99.49% of the global fleet was “yet to be replaced”.

In 2018, 84.7% of the world’s primary energy consumption was met by fossil fuels, whereas renewables (solar, wind, geothermal and biofuels) accounted for only 4.05% and nuclear power 10.1%.

The total additional non-fossil fuel electrical power annual generating capacity that would be needed for complete global decarbonization is around 37,671 terawatt hours (TWh). An additional 221,594 new power plants would have to be constructed and commissioned to meet the power needs of a decarbonized world. To meet the power requirements of complete decarbonization, almost five times as many plants as those now in place today would have to be built, and all this would have to take place in 27 years.

Converting all current (i.e. 1.39 billion) short-range road vehicles to EVs would require the production of an additional 65.19 TWh of batteries (282.6 million tonnes of lithium-ion batteries), and an annual additional 6,158.4 TWh of electricity from the power grid to charge those batteries.

The 282.6 million tonnes of lithium just to power the 1.39 billion short-range road vehicles is beyond current global lithium reserves. Further, each of the 1.39 billion batteries would have a useful working life of only 8 to 10 years, according to International Energy Agency estimates. So, 8-10 years after manufacture, new replacement batteries would be required.

Australia will now fine firms up to AU$50 million for data breaches

The Australian parliament has approved a bill to amend the country’s privacy legislation, significantly increasing the maximum penalties to AU$50 million for companies and data controllers who suffered large-scale data breaches.

The financial penalty introduced by the new bill is set to whichever is greater:

    AU$50 million
Three times the value of any benefit obtained through the misuse of information
30% of a company’s adjusted turnover in the relevant period
Previously, the penalty for severe data exposures was AU$2.22 million, considered wholly inadequate to incentivize companies to improve their data security mechanisms.

Now expand it to cover p1ss-poor fraud protection by banks.

Welcome to your ‘new warming’ – also known as cooling. Today’s satellite pic shows an impressive curling wave of climate change cloud, which the maps say will hang around for a few days more, thanks to a ‘blocking high’ in the Tasman Sea: likewise, a blocking high over Greenland appears to be causing ‘new warming’ in Canada & USA and Russia & Eastern Europe. There’s fresh snow in Hawaii too, aloha!

As I said above, blocking highs in the Tasman have dramatically different impact on different parts of Australia. For us in the middle (and further west) they mean endless hot northerly air and heatwaves. It ain’t climate change, it has always been thus.

If we accept that blocking is caused by a meandering jet stream, then we need to know what causes it to meander?

In this recent paper, focussed on the Northern Hemisphere, they hint its because of AGW.

‘The Arctic is warming more rapidly than midlatitudes and the temperature difference between those regions is being reduced. As a result, it has been hypothesized that the jet stream will decrease in intensity and its meanders will move more slowly eastward, leading to more persistent or even extreme weather conditions.’ (Riboldi et al 2020)

Cooling is climate change, there is no need to switch gears in fact a cooling cycle will only enhance the amount of gravy collected, because at least then the climate would have actually changed.

Nothing terrifies a Leftist more than alternative ideas or free speech.

He explains what is verboten to discuss according to YouTube:

-Covid vaccine safety alleging chronic side effects except “rare” ones acknowledged by authorities.

-Efficacy of covid vaccines such as not allowed to claim they do not reduce transmission or contraction of covid disease.

-Not allowed to talk about the ingredients.

Another series of earthquakes (200 counted in one day) recorded over two days under Lake Taupo in New Zealand, the strongest at 5.6 on the Richter scale.
If the activity continues along with increased ground displacement, then we should expect the alert level to be again increased.

Volcano Eruptions On the Rise with Solar Minimum

I warned that Socrates, which monitors everything around the world (JC2 – so do I!), noticed a distinct correlation that more volcanos erupt during Solar Minimum. There have been many studies on the impact of UV and gamma radiation during solar changes and events. Gamma-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation, as are radio waves, infrared radiation, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and microwaves. Gamma-rays can be used to treat cancer, and gamma-ray bursts are studied by astronomers.

I have also reported that our correlation models also show that solar minimums correspond to increased volcanic activity. Volcanic winters take place during solar minimums. It certainly seems that gamma-rays may be the reason volcanoes erupt more during these periods. This certainly also reduces food production and increases disease, presumably because of a rise in malnutrition. However, since gamma-rays are also used to treat cancer, there is at least a basis to warrant further investigation if the increase in gamma-rays during solar minimums impact certain susceptible people or those with particular DNA sequences.

Over in Russia, its Shiveluch volcano has become active and now a powerful explosion is considered possible at any moment. It is one of the largest in the Russian far East volcanos recorded and it has had volcanic ash plume rising up to around 13000ft altitude.

      https://www.armstrongeconomics.com/international-news/nature/volcano-eruptions-on-the-rise-with-solar-minimum/

I suspect Shiveluch will pop too.
My prediction posted here back in mid Feb was that we’d see TWO MAJOR volcanic eruptions late this year. Mauno Loa was #1 (prediction #3.1) so just waiting for #2.
Breaking – just got an advisory right now about Shiveluch!
Sorry Marty – JC2 beat you again.

we are heading towards solar max!!

          We Are?

Pity nobody told the sun. It’s been retrograde, moving into a Grand Solar Minimum (GSM), since 2004. And that’s the least of our problems.

Most of the world is heading into an almighty economic crash. At the same time much of the world is experiencing shortages of gas, electricity, food and fertiliser. And even that is only the start.

The four giant planets, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn and Jupiter, are moving into an alignment with us not experienced since 47AD. The solar system’s magnetic fields are already moving into realignment as a result. This is partly causing our weird weather. We start to hit peak alignment late 2024 to mid 2025.

          Can you spell “catastrophic” children?

Yes sir, but I just had a look at the Roman Warm Period and nothing happened in 47 AD.

‘Two potential climate-forcing factors both show unusual stability. Within the generally even level of solar activity between c. 200 b.c. and 600 a.d., the centuries from 200 b.c. to 100 a.d. stand out as particularly stable. An exceptionally low level of volcanic activity also prevailed from c. 40 b.c. to 150 a.d.’ (McCormack et al 2012)

I apprehend that you meant to say “in Pisces”. That is a particular region of the sky as seen from Earth.

Frequency and resonance , leading to amplification. Quite handy for long -range forecasting at the seasonal level.
              But dismissed by most punters.

So what can be said to be the effect on climate of changes in the position of the barycentre of our solar system?

The claims are that Jupiter and Saturn are aligned every 11 years and in opposition (i.e. on opposite sides) every 11 years.
Some think this might explain the 11 year solar cycle.

Then it appears that the Sun returns to the same position to the barycentre every 179 years, which seems rather similar to the 180 year climate cycle some have claimed. Let’s see 2022, 1843 (1), 1664(2), 1485(3), 1306(4), 1127 (5), 948(6) , 769(7), 590, 411(8), 232, 53 AD.

                “pure unadulterated science”
The problem with that is that it can’t be done until we have a list of the independent variables that need to be eliminated as causes.
That’s the minimum requirement to get falsification of the null hypothesis .
That requires us to have a Unified General Theory of Climate Variation.
                I’ve never seen one.
All we have for sure is that the CO2 conjecture is falsified by the models.

The Irish potato famine was caused by the late blight pathogen, introduced to Europe in the 1840s, not climate change.

Plagues in Europe usually came from the Far East through trade and are not directly linked to climate change. The fires in London were probably exacerbated by hot winds off the Sahara.

The 1306 date is on the money, but its worth remembering that correlation does not prove causation.

Maybe we are talking at crossed purposes here, Crakar.
GSM is a period low total solar irradiance (TSI).
What do you mean by a “solar max”?

“The orbit path of the sun as the locations of barycentre and planets alter is complex, as demonstrated by Fairbridge. This divergent behavior causes widely varying outputs of energy from the sun on a regular basis, and these variations in the interactions between the sun and the planets have been assessed by various geological and related studies. The variations in energy correlate with uncanny precision with past vagaries of the Earth’s climate on a cyclical basis, the periodicity being about 179 years.

The correlations with recurring periods of very cold weather, as evidenced by historical data, can only be described as irrefutable.”

Thank you for that link, Farmerbraun.

Yes, that is the GSM cycle I was referring to. At high school we were taught it was an approximately 150 year cycle, but that was half a century ago. So I will happily accept the 179 year cycle stated in the report as more accurate.

I get my retrograde starting date of 2004 from articles in WUWT circa 2009, but I don’t think the two year difference to Fairbridge’s 2006 is worth quibbling about.

More importantly, Fairbridge’s paper accurately describes what has been happening these past fifteen years since it was written. I urge everyone reading this now, to spend five minutes reading the report, and copy or bookmark it for future reference. Things are going down very quickly now.

Having said all that, I think we are at crossed purposes to what Crakar is referring to, and I would really appreciate an expansion on what he refers to as “solar max”.

                It didn’t? Thank goodness!!
It must have been a figment of my imagination that people were still skiing at Thredbo mid-November, or that our cotton crops couldn’t be planted mid-October because it was too cold, or that most of SE Australia is experiencing temps 10 degrees below average, or that much of Europe and North America that are lucky to get snow by mid January, are currently digging themseles out of snowdrifts several feet deep.

But then, I always did have a vivid imagination.

“I would really appreciate an expansion on what he refers to as “solar max”.”

                3 options I think-

-The maximum output of the sun hitting Earth in W/SqM

-The maximum number of sunspots in the current cycle

-The size of this sunspot solar cycle compared to the overall waves since we started counting them.

As far as I know we have lesser sunlight in W/SqM, are accelerating in sunspot numbers faster than expected, but yet to peak, and this cycle is smaller as we approach the grand minimum.

However, there was that interesting bit about sunspots being smaller than usual…

World temperatures plateaued from 2000 to 2010, because of a negative Pacific Decadal Oscillation, but for some inexplicable reason it returned to its positive phase.

My municipality in regional Victoria publishes a monthly newsletter. All froth and bubble mostly highlighting all the “woke” things local government are wasting my council fees on. December edition arrived today. Story on what is being called a “Survival Day” ceremony which is to be celebrated ( ?) on 26/1/23 – yep, Australia Day. Also a dawn service, so maybe has similarities to Anzac Day. Organised by some Koorie activist group , all with the blessing of local council. So, on the day we should be celebrating our great nation by bringing all of us together, this lot will be up at the crack of dawn having a big whinge – dividing us up. So, we’ve had “Invasion Day”, now we have Survival Day. My first thought – that scene in Monty Python, Life of Brian. Someone asks ” What did those bloody Romans ever do for us?”. Another answers quietly, ” umm, modern sewerage facilities”. Someone else ” … roads”. Keep a watch out for you local council – I’ll bet it’s nationwide.

It’s a fair question. Being a blogger, I don’t have much appreciation for the formalities of the publication process. In blogging, you finish the post, do a quick proofread, press “Publish,” and there it is. With this, it has been rounds of peer review, editing, typesetting, proofreading, and so forth. Cool and wet is the order of the day. With all this negative feedback how can the zealots blame CO2?

‘Based on spatially-averaged rainfall, Australia just had its 2nd wettest spring in records dating back to 1900, beaten only by 2010. More locally, it was the wettest spring on record for NSW, Victoria and the Murray-Darling Basin.

‘It was also an abnormally cool spring for large areas of Australia, due to increased cloud cover from La Nina, the negative IOD and positive SAM, combined with the passage of several unseasonably strong cold fronts.

‘Based on daytime maximum temperatures, it was the coldest spring since 1976 in NSW, 1992 in Vic and WA and 2010 for Qld, SA and Australia as a whole.’ (Weatherzone)

Anyone seen this document on how we are going to get to 100% RE?
If you go to the page, in the middle there’s a PDF report.

    Some salient points:

The NEM will reach the point where it can operate at 100% instantaneous penetration of renewables many years in advance of the time where it can operate at
100% renewables on an extended basis (over many weeks or months).

    and then:

The term ‘100% renewables’ is used throughout this report to refer to the first instance of operation at 100% instantaneous penetration of renewables

So, 100% renewables will be 100% at any instant – for how long? Then ‘they’ will claim that we have achieved 100% RE.
And this all depends on how much wind will be blowing each night.

It’s scary reading 101 pages of complexity with no costs.

People often ask me how to preserve wealth through the coming economic collapse and increasingly Marxist totalitarian governments throughout the West.

Gold is an obvious preserver of wealth but highly impractical for many reasons.

Real estate is not secure because it can be confiscated, or, heavily taxed by governments forcing you to sell (I expect that to happen before the end of the Andrews regime in Vicdanistan, Australia).

I don’t think crypto is fundamentally secure either.

    Any ideas?

There are no guarantees, David, but my ploy has always been to have a little bit of everything – excluding stocks and bonds at the moment, and crypto never.

I also have a few grand in a Perth Mint GoldPass account. WA is the only state that isn’t bankrupt, the Perth Mint is wholly state govt owned, and I think McGowan has set up GoldPass as the basis for his own gold-backed currency if the shyte really hits the oscillator.

It also is a trading bank account (Westpac) which offers some protection against bank bail-ins. The account is designed to buy gold, but you don’t have to – you can just use it as a normal trading account. I hold some gold and some cash reserve in it.

In Europe gold can be the difference between life and death – if you have the gold sewn in the hem of your coat to bribe a border guard.

It is said, with reasonable accuracy, that a Roman could dress himself befitting a man of standing with an oz of gold. At A2,600/oz today it is much the same.

Personally I have a stash of round 50c coins. Each contain a third oz of silver. I have enough to eat [no I do not intend eating the coins] during an even prolonged bank holiday. It’s insurance that doesn’t expire in 12 mths.

Poland has over 5000 soldiers serving in Ukraine, and Russia says their status is causing jealousy amongst the Ukrainians. They have supplied Ukraine with arms and are quite close, especially as part of Ukraine used to be Polish. Zelenski recently made it visa-free for Poles to go to Ukraine and work/live.

Now the Russians say Poland has a plan to take Western Ukraine back, leaving a central Ukraine as a buffer between Poland and the East of Ukraine Russia is taking.

    https://warnews247-gr.translate.goog/rosia-schedio-prosartisis-tis-dytiki-oukranias-apo-polonia-poies-perioches-pairnei-o-zelenski-chorigise-eidiko-kathestos-stous-polonous/?_x_tr_sl=el&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-GB

Head of the EU, Ursula von der Leyen, said the Russians have killed 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers, which is similar to what Russia says, and that suggests a quarter of a million soldiers injured. After the instant outcry she deleted the tweet and replaced it with one that doesn’t mention casualties.

    https://warnews247-gr.translate.goog/ektakto-diloseis-vomva-komision-pano-apo-100-000-nekroi-oukranoi-kai-200-000-travmaties-anakoinose-eidiko-dikastirio-kata-poutin-kai-rosias/?_x_tr_sl=el&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-GB

Also in there, apparently we are keen to chip into the $US1,000,000,000,000 that Zelenski wants to rebuild Ukraine. If there’s only 30million Ukies left, that’s $US300,000 per person, and a $US goes a long way in a dump like Ukraine.

Couple of nice posts by Caitlin Johnstone-

“NATO has doubled down on its determination to eventually add Ukraine to its membership, renewing its 2008 commitment to that goal in a meeting between the foreign ministers of the alliance in Bucharest, Romania this past Tuesday.
The recent push to expand NATO in Ukraine along with nations like Finland and Sweden as justified by “Russian aggression” is a good example of what professor Richard Sakwa has called the “fateful geographical paradox: that NATO exists to manage the risks created by its existence.”
The US is pushing European allies to take a harder stance towards Beijing as it tries to leverage its leadership on Ukraine to gain more support from Nato countries for its efforts to counter China in the Indo-Pacific.

“The Guardian has joined The New York Times, Le Monde, Der Spiegel and El PaĂs in signing a letter from the five papers which collaborated with WikiLeaks twelve years ago in the publication of the Chelsea Manning leaks to call for the Biden administration to drop all charges against Julian Assange.

If The Guardian really wants to help end the persecution of the heroic WikiLeaks founder, the best way to do that would be to retract those many smears, spin jobs and outright lies, and to formally apologize for publishing them.

This is after all the same Guardian which published the transparently ridiculous and completely invalidated 2018 report that Trump lackey Paul Manafort had met secretly with Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy, not once but multiple times. Not one shred of evidence has ever been produced to substantiate this claim despite the embassy being one of the most heavily surveilled buildings on the planet at the time, and the Robert Mueller investigation, whose expansive scope would obviously have included such meetings, reported absolutely nothing to corroborate it. It was a bogus story which all accused parties have forcefully denied and no serious person believes is true, yet to this day it still sits on The Guardian’s website without retraction of any kind.”

Not much in the way of “harassment by shadowy forces of unprovable allegiance”, Andrew. They were usually pretty open about it. At various times we had altercations with the AFP, ASIO, the CIA, MI6 and Mossad.

But the scariest crowd were the guys from the British Admiralty – not MI6 – who report directly to the Crown, not the govt**. They were very specific about the future state of my health, and Marilyn’s, if we didn’t cease and desist publicising details about George H Bush’s ongoing protection of pedophile activities in the USA. That was after the Inside News issue about Alisha Owens that caused Bush to throw up at his State Dinner in Japan.

Looks like some politicians can still do math:

The Albanese government has maintained the coalition’s net zero target by 2050 and set a new 43 per cent target
by 2030, which also assumes an electricity generation target of 82 per cent from renewables. This, by the minister’s
own admission, requires the installation of 22,000 solar panels every single day and 40 wind turbines every single
month all the way up to 2030, along with tens of thousands of kilometres of transmission lines carpeted over regional
Australia. In setting these grand targets, however, the government lacked an implementation plan and any credible
economic modelling to back it up—despite having nine years to do so.

    More from Ted:

Issues of reliability will only worsen over time under this government’s settings. Set against a backdrop of
increasing demand over coming years due to population growth and electrification, we have approximately 20
gigawatts of coal-fired generator capacity due to close by 2035. That’s around 80 per cent of baseload capacity in
the National Electricity Market gone. Here’s the issue: this baseload capacity is being removed without any
guarantee of adequate replacements being up and running in time. To make matters worse, Australia’s not
mothballing these plants but demolishing them, leaving us with no plan B for when the government’s rollout of 82
per cent renewables fails. What has the government said about this? How is it acting on these premature closures?
It has said nothing and it has taken no action, only escalating the risk for the reliability of the Australian grid.
