Unprecedented panic: For the first time ever, half of life on Earth will be wiped out by tiny 0.5C rise

Life on Earth mostly made it through 500 million years of asteroids and supervolcanoes only to be wiped out by a half a degree temperature rise. This really will be unprecedented.

Climate change could destroy half of Earth’s animal and plant species in the next 50 years, disturbing study says

Despite animals surviving temperature rises of 20 degrees every day, a half a degree of warming in 50 years will kill off half the species on Earth.

A disturbing new study suggests that climate change could wipe out half of the planet’s animal and plant species by 2070.

The research notes that if temperatures rise 0.5 degrees Celsius around the globe, approximately half of the world’s species would become locally extinct. If temperatures were to rise 2.9 degrees Celsius, 95 percent of the species would become locally extinct.

Note the scale on the graph of the last 500 million years.  I marked half a degree in the red box.

I’m not too concerned about life on Earth surviving the next 50 years. But at this rate of decay, science is cactus.

These researchers think Earth is a simulation:

“By analyzing the change in 19 climatic variables at each site, we could determine which variables drive local extinctions and how much change a population can tolerate without going extinct,” study co-author Cristian Román-Palacios added.

No meaningless study is complete without overly detailed meaningless numbers. Let’s take that ten year trend and run with it:

Wiens and the other researchers looked at data from 538 species in 581 different parts of the globe. The focus was on “plant and animal species that were surveyed at the same sites over time, at least 10 years apart,” the statement said, adding that 44 percent of the 538 species had already gone extinct at one or more of the sites.

“Surprisingly, extinctions occurred at sites with smaller changes in mean annual temperatures but larger increases in hottest yearly temperatures,” the study’s authors wrote.

And here was me thinking the only mammal extinction due to climate change was a brown rat that accidentally lived on a sand dune in the coral sea.

One down, and 3,199 to go.

OK then when is the UN going to force China, Japan and India to stop building hundreds more coal fired power stations? If the UN were really serious about it they should be having an emergency meeting to do just that. Of course they won’t so the biggest scam of all time continues with most Western leaders, MSM and educators leading the charge. Total madness.

Indeed, LOL. At least we won’t have to worry about the UN forcing them to stop building 100’s of new coal fired power stations that would otherwise lead to a collapse of our coal exports. Then again we do have some politicians on both sides here who do want to close down our coal industry. Can I dare to call them traitors?

Reducing the CO2 levels is the goal..but at what expense…further reduction in plant growth and little wonder hence more species will be destroyed in decades coming… This appears to be a “no win” carousel of climate stupidity !

According to my own study, in progress for 14 years, 3 months and 23 days, so far, this planets will support MORE life when there is more CO2 in the air and it is warmer, NOT LESS.

As usual, leftists can predict anything bad that they want to, by playing computer games, and 95% of the media (in US) will accept their bad news predictions as facts, without question, even though not one prior environmental / climate prediction of doom has been correct for over 60 years.

I demand a list of the Latin names for all the species that will allegedly become extinct.

Without such a list, and there will never be one, the leftists with science degrees are practicing junk science again with their meaningless computer games, which have no predictive ability.

Leftist climate scaremongers are losers and liars … just like all other leftists — truth is NOT a leftist virtue.,

Silly question, when a ‘Nation’ like Tuvalu, population 11,192 as of 2017, has a vote at the U.N. worth the same as the USA then stupid decisions are the norm. Not least when the prize is climate ‘reparations’ from the developed world.

We need to list the nations which are “benefitting” from China’s Belts and Roads programme and cross check on their voting at U.N., IPCC and Cops. Might be very illumi eating..

They have problems interpreting any graph, be it arithmetic or logarithmic on either axis. They get in the way of their mantra so they only use the ones that support their agenda. Similarly they have problems understating percentages. Mankind produce only some 4% of the world’s total CO2 component of the atmosphere, which is about 0.04%. Anyone who argues that mankind’s contribution going from 4% to say 6% is going to lead to some catastrophic global warming catastrophe is either lying or ignorant. Then they claim we should aim for 0% emissions by say 2050. The total CO2 by then will still be around 0.04% if not higher for various reasons. The whole show is one big scam driven predominantly by bad scientists. Criminals are being put in prison for life for far less. Bernard Lawrence Madoff is a case in point.

extreme difficulty in interpreting the horizontal log scale.

Not actually a log scale. It is 5 separate graphs, each with a different horizontal linear scale, placed end to end. It is easier to see if the graph is enlarged by s double click.

A lot is unprecedented just due to better observations.

(CNN)A story about a glacier shedding mass at the edge of the world, threatening to raise ocean levels and potentially contribute to untold environmental change.

Sound familiar? That’s because it probably is. But if you weren’t paying attention before, it probably is worth doing so now.
An iceberg has broken off Pine Island Glacier (PIG) on the edge of Antarctica, according to satellite images taken Tuesday by the European Space Agency (ESA).

And it’s a big one. At more than 300 square kilometers (116 square miles), the iceberg was almost as big as Atlanta and roughly the same size as Malta — although it very quickly fragmented

    And from a 1906 article http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article89340575

    BIG ANTARCTIC ICEBERGS.
The icebergs seen in Southern Seas
are far larger than any that originate
in the Arctic Circle. Tihey are the pro
duct of glaciers descending from the
high land’s . which surround the South
    Pole.
    Writing in “Chambers’ Journal” for
    January, Mr. William Allingham, au
    thor of ”Marine ‘Meteorology,” says
that “during te first four months of
    1854, about half-way between Cape
Horn and the Cape of Good Hope, a
    never-to-be-forgotten mass of ice was
passed by a large number of the splen
did sailing ships then engaged in carry
ing eager hearts and wiilling hands to
Australia. It was shaped like the let-
ter J., and therefore especially dan
gerous to vessels entering between the
two sides under the assumption that
they are in the presence of two enor
mous parallel bergs. The longer side
    stretched in impenetrable solidity for
60 miles, while the shorter side was
    less by only 20 miles!

That is 6000 square kilometres, although with a large bay biting into it, 60% of the largest recorded by satellite before it broke up and was spotted by a sailing ship.

A lot is unprecedented just due to better observations“.

Too true, when you consider that until about 35-40 years ago, we could not measure the temperature to within 0.5 degrees with liquid/glass thermometers, which were rarely calibrated with graduation smaller the a whole degree. Even if they were calibrated to less than that, there was a built in parallax error, so a reading taken by a tall observer was different to that taken by his shorter colleague. As well , there was no guarantee that observations were taken at the specified time of day.

So all the projections, models, etc are based on a lot of old data that was questionable, yet our “experts” treat that as Gospel that must not be challenged when making decisions to spend billions of our dollars (not the Government’s nor their’s). Makes the original South Seas Bubble look positively honest!

      • #
        Graeme No.3

But Bruce, the South Sea Bubble was an absurd proposition aimed at making money for the (scam) promoters and assorted politicians by relentless propaganda about how it would save the country from disaster (debt).

There were a few sceptics, including the Duchess of Marlborough who said that 1+1 can never equal 3. She made a deal of money.
The only good was the foundation of Guy’s hospital, by one who sold out early for cash.

“…there was a built in parallax error, so a reading taken by a tall observer was different to that taken by his shorter colleague…”

That’s why they have a mirror beside/behind the glass – line up the reflection with the liquid level and no matter how tall you are or what angle you are looking at it from, you’ll get the same reading. Same applies to analogue meters where you see a mirror strip applied to the scale. It’s a cheap, simple and elegant solution to parallax error – like much “olde teck”, using physical reality limits to help refine measurements, or to imply that which you do not have the tools to measure directly.

My fave alarmist meme is that the Apollo astronauts gave in to pressure and that’s why they “deny” climate change. Ha ha. As one of them said “You don’t know what pressure is” – because the Apollo 13 pilot had to do the equivalent of firing a rifle under the goal posts at a football ground at someone holding a sheet of 80gsm A4 paper sideways (ie, edge on) under the goal posts at the other end. You have never fired this particular rifle before. You have no telescopic sights, just a notch and peg. You get one shot to hit that paper – if you miss, you and everyone else on board dies. You really think someone who has done this and lived is worried about what some gronk actor thinks of his attitude towards… anything, really.

What about a simple test to see whether animals could even detect a life threatening change of 0.5C. Say two areas and the reward is always in the slightly hotter room? But why bother? It is extremely silly. Skin temperature on humans varies 3-4C but half a degree in outside temperature means extinction?

When the temperature scale was invented, no one thought an increase in air temperature of 0.5C would be lethal? It makes nonsense of red hot pokers.

Turns out that emitting carbon (sic) in this post-apocalyptic-global-warmed world is a truly lousy way of killing locusts, causing them to become extinct before their time …

We are suffering from information overload to the extent not many take the time and effort to sort the good from the bad. A rare dry day for NSW is the message from our weather man on Sky News. This is a perfect example of how too many people think – short term memories. We don’t actually need memory holes deployed in our society because they appear to be in so many people’s heads already.

Well if we are to adopt this new climate emergency and given we as a nation are already thinking of adopting a net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050 to be in-line with the UK then we better start building nuclear powered stations to play catch-up with them. It would be so much better though if the PM stopped the pretence and started the withdrawal process from the Paris Agreement and joined China, India and Japan to build more coal fired power stations. Sadly he is no backbone and no will for the truth on climate change. He prefers to swallow the lies and hoax and go along with the scam.

What we need is another Bob Hawke to take over the ALP and support nuclear power plants. Not long ago he was in favour of going nuclear. One thing is for sure. The LNP in their great tradition have little vision and no will to do what is right on energy policy. They are truly hopeless. Given there is little hope of a Bob Hawke coming to save to ALP we have both major parties dead set on pushing Australia over the cliff. There really is only one option left. We the people must vote for an alternative party to stop the rot.

Nuclear energy is so toxic and dangerous, the only place cheap enough to store the waste is on site in spent fuel pools. Nuclear reactors around the world store spent fuel on site and will mythically be re-processed…all of them….

The only place to store the poison of harvesting this fuel is in tailings ponds/dams that are supposedly engineered to be permanent.

As for thorium….what is it about people who believe in a free lunch?

In late 1990 or very early 1991 I was exploring St Kilda Park in South Melbourne. I came across a meeting of an Acclimatization Society who were trying to make the case for the Bushy-Tailed possum to be declared an endangered species.

I didn’t say or do anything but I was highly amused. I saw a few people fall on the floor laughing fit to bust. One of them stood up and asked:

“how many billion do you want?”

      The speaker looked confused.

“There are billions of them eating New Zealand’s forests right now. If you’re prepared to make it worth our while and pay for the little beggars, we could ship them back here in their tens of thousands per load. They’re a huge pest over there. How many million do you want to start?”

Ah, must be a Kiwi. No wonder he had been laughing. He wasn’t wrong. The Bushy-Tailed possum is a huge and highly destructive pest on my side of the Tasman. Our flora is ice cream for them. The forests became overpopulated so the surplus moved into the towns and cities. They’re everywhere now.

DoC (Department of Conservation) is is still trying to control their numbers. Note the operative words: control their numbers. If we want to save our forests, we shouldn’t be trying to control their numbers, we should be trying to eradicate them. So, want any `endangered’ bushy-tailed possums? How many millions will you take?

OK, you’re coming from the reverse direction but you’ve missed the point. To convert a difference of 105F to degrees C you have to divide by 1.8 to get 58.3C.

            Miami was 81F = 27.2C
            Minneapolis was -24F = -31.1C

            The difference in degrees C is 27.2 minus -31.1 = 58.3

I don’t know where you got the figure of 53.8C from unless you just misread the 58.3 number.

The global warming alarmists must be using a different temperature scale when talking about future rises. Alternatively, perhaps when they say 0.5 rise they mean 5.0 but are not willing to say it (they used to) for fear of being ridiculed even by their own leading propagandists.

So living creatures move about a bit. In one place for a while, then they move on for any number of reasons and in due course come back again.
If it is ‘extinction’ when they move away from one location is it ‘creation’ when they return?

Reminds me of the story I read a year or two ago, I can’t remember whether it was here or elsewhere. I seems an environmentalist was addressing a crowd in St Kilda about animal extinctions and he used as an example of the possum that has gone extinct in Victoria. A New Zealander who happened to wander past at the time called “How many do you want? We could send a million or so.” He was ignored.

      Maptram –

not what you recall, but pertinent!

Jul 2006: SMH: Letters: The possums that are eating Melbourne
YOUR editorial “In city’s homes, this native title is fur real” (17/7), highlighting the need to obey wildlife laws intended to protect possums, is appropriate and good as far as it goes…
In my opinion, parts of Melbourne are in crisis, akin to the worst experiences in New Zealand, evidenced by possums denuding gardens, causing widespread death of vegetation…

From a garden that is graced with a number of heritage-listed significant trees, which was once opened in successive years as part of the Australian open garden scheme, in just 15 years my family has witnessed a horrific change, with the biodiversity of the garden being reduced by an estimated 50 per cent. Hundreds of plants have been eaten back, year in year out, to the extent that they have given up the fight and died.

In a garden that once boasted many fruit trees and vegetable beds, which had flourished for over a century, almost all fruit trees have now died from possum attack. No longer can we grow any vegetables, as the possums graze on any vegetable brave enough to appear above the soil. Numerous trees, exotic and native, that were decades old, have died. There were once more than two dozen varieties of eucalypts growing in the garden: today just one blue gum survives. We once had a diverse collection of callistemon, hakeas and banksias; today all are stunted and none has flowered for years…
We have tried every known recommendation to find the balance, from tree guards to possum boxes, all to no avail…

As a community we must not turn a blind eye to this problem. Presumably New Zealanders were sanguine about the introduced possum before it was too late for their environment…
This crisis in parts of Melbourne is not just about people who still cherish the ideals of the garden state; it is also all about maintaining biodiversity. I know from our lists of observed native birds in our garden that as our possum invasion worsened with bird habitat being lost, the reduction of bird species diversity has been alarming.

Local extinctions are one way they tracked the LIA in China. A herb and some citrus species stopped being cultivated in the north as rougher times came for the Ming.

Of course, like UHI, sometimes the Med Warming and LIA happened, sometimes they never happened or only sort of happened in spots.

I read reasonably often in the papers how Australia is the biggest emitter per capita of CO2 in the world. Is there any truth in this? Or has someone confused the 1.3% of 3% of human contribution to be nearly half? Perhaps it should be put in the “97% of scientists agree” box. ToM

It depends how you measure it. If you include coal exports (as they’re increasingly doing) then yeah Australia is fairly high per capita. As you would expect given our relatively small population and abundance of natural resource, natural resources they demand we abstain from so as to cleanse ourselves of our supposed climate sin.

I thought I was seeing things yesterday when the Sydney Morning Herald printed this letter:

“Many letter writers are misrepresenting the view of many who strongly object to Australia taking unilateral action to respond to climate change (Letters, February 12). Nobody disputes that climate change is occurring.

Where we part company is that we disagree that any action Australia takes will have the slightest impact on climate change given that our annual output of CO2 emissions is negligible in a global context.

If climate change activists want to trash regional Australia, shut down fossil fuel usage, and close coal-fired power stations it will take us back to developing country status. Hopefully, cooler heads will ultimately prevail. Michael Clarey, Pyrmont”

Is it possible that they’re seeing the light? So I banged off a letter about Australia’s .0000156% contribution to CO2 and surprise surprise – not printed. But there were many letters slamming the one that was printed yesterday. Back to square one. ToM

I’m sensing a similar feeling. The debate is no longer about climate change being real or not. Most are now accepting it on blind faith that it’s real. Most have moved on and debating on the next steps. As I keep saying the precautionary principle is fine as long as we decide to go nuclear as the UK has already proven. Otherwise, sticking with the renewables while letting our coal fired power stations to wind down, as most people already now, is economic suicide. It really is a no brainer. Go nuclear or we keep spinning our wheels stuck in the sands of renewables. Having said all that I still prefer we do what Japan is doing but I see that’s an even harder policy to sell to the public, unless of course we get a good leader who can explain to the people the truth about climate change and emissions reductions.

“By analyzing the change in 19 climatic variables at each site, we could determine which variables drive local extinctions and how much change a population can tolerate without going extinct,”

So who said extinctions are driven solely and wholly by ‘climatic variables’.

What about competition, local variation for small local populations (as with the rats trapped on an island), change in predatory behaviour, changes in landscape, changes in water distribution, obstacles to movement, introduced species,…

In deciding that only ‘climate’ is behind extinction, the unavoidable part of all evolution and survival of the fittest, they are left with the conclusion that 0.5C is behind ALL species extinction.

I would suggest they have actuall discovered is that this assumption is utterly wrong. No one would think 0.5C in an ultra dry desert climate (Arizona) which varies 60-80C in a year and up to 50C in any one day could possibly have wiped out a single species. Or even been noticed.

It’s what happens when ornithologists and environmentalists and ecologists are given the title ‘scientist’ and start to play with statistics and announce absurd correlations as discoveries.

These are people like Tim Flannery who went into English at La Trobe because he couldn’t get into any Science department. This new ecology and earth sciences by essay and observational zoology is so often little more than observation and categorization without any proven ability in scientific reasoning let alone mathematics. So we get the announcments which are as spectacularly silly as they are scientifically wrong. It’s also what you have to do to get attention and funding.

And John Weins is part of the University of Arizona, Interdisciplinary program in the Conservation and Ecological Genetics team. There is no point just saying that a lot of new species do not prove viable over a long time period.

It’s self evident that you only get attention if you say that regular species extinctions are caused by people flying on holidays, eating hamburgers and not driving Tesla cars and changes of 0.5C.

      90

    • #
      TdeF

It just occurred in rereading this that ‘Climate’ is interpreted solely as ‘temperature’. Not rainfall, insolation, humidity, water flow, storms, torrential downpours, tornadoes, wind storms, length of time without rain, amount of rain at any time but just temperature.

You can only think the argument is that 0.5C worldwide controls all the other variables at his test site in Arizona, at least in the mind of this Climate Change Scientist. So Climate is now temperature. Macro generalizations means species disaster in his neighbourhood. So specific weather has nothing to do with extinction but Climate Change has. Logic is the second casualty of Climate Change after truth.

May I add to your list that the 0.5C is an average over the entire Earth.

As the Arctic is supposedly heating up to unprecedented “Oh, my Gosh. We’re all doomed” levels, there must be many other areas that are either not heating up, cooling or only slightly warming, in order to get so low an average.

No, it’s not empirical at all.

The thermistor based device only measures Net IR. DWLWR is derived and doesn’t exist at all.

What is called DWLWR is nothing but Upwelling-from-the-measurement-instrument-IR.

If there’s no DWLWR please explain why these two situations don’t see exactly the same thing with a cloudless night time sky:

              (1) 1 meter aperture ground-based IR telescope cooled to -50 C in a 150 hPa pressure chamber.

              (2) An identical 1 meter aperture aircraft-based IR telescope @ 45,000 ft (150 hPa) and -50 C.

              https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8a/SOFIA_ED10-0182-01_full.jpg

If there’s no downwelling IR because IR only radiates toward space, and they have the same IR transparent window material they should see the same IR signature and sensitivity (identical sensor) so why go to the terrific expense of operating such IR telescopes from aircraft, flying into the lower polar stratosphere? i.e. where there’s extremely thin ultra-dry air? Even atmospheric scintillation can be removed by optical correction, so there’s no particular reason why they would not see the same thing (if there’s no DWLWR).

If both are looking at the zenith, what’s the spectral and sensitivity difference, within a cloudless midnight sky? If there’s no spectral response or sensitivity advantage to putting the telescope on the aircraft, because DWLWR allegedly does not exist, why repeatedly do it?

The astronomers could just put the flight operation money into building a much bigger and better IR telescope array on the ground. Why bother with IR space telescopes if the atmosphere is IR transparent when you look at the zenith on a cloudless night?

But there is of course DWLWR.

“ … The principal limitation on infrared sensitivity from ground-based telescopes is the Earth’s atmosphere. Water vapor absorbs a significant amount of infrared radiation, and the atmosphere itself emits at infrared wavelengths. For this reason, most infrared telescopes are built in very dry places at high altitude, so that they are above most of the water vapor in the atmosphere. … “ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrared_astronomy#Space_observatories

i.e. water vapor absorbs and re-emits IR in all directions, because it is a GHG, and thus it’s DWLWR is a measurable source of noise and spectral blocking. Astronomical sensors are not confused about up and down moving IR photons. IR photons from the sun move from space to the ground to be absorbed and warm the ground every day from dawn to dusk. There’s nothing to stop IR photons moving from colder space to the warmer earth to warm it further. If the earth was incandescent the IR flux input from sun to Earth’s incandescent surface would not change at all.

There is a net flow to space, but it is clearly not direct or one way. To claim that water vapor does not absorb and re-emit in all directions is obviously false.

You did a great job of pointing out how annoying water vapor’s light SCATTERING property is to astronomy while pretending there’s DWLWR.

“There’s nothing to stop IR photons moving from colder space to the warmer earth to warm it further.”

Funny, Planck and Boltzmann did not recognize such nonsense when they derived their empirically proven laws. They both had one standing wave per frequency between two opposing walls in their radiation oven. If there was two way travel, then there would be a 2x factor in photon density. Please show me that factor in their equations.

Also, if what you said was true, there would be no inversions! The top would warm the bottom as the bottom cooled. And yet inversions happen all the time.

“The astronomers could just put the flight operation money into building a much bigger and better IR telescope array on the ground.”

But it’s cheaper to cool in the upper atmosphere. Half the work is done.

What, are you an economist now?

Water vapor sending IR down would not be a problem for astronomers. It’s the fact that water vapor emits to where it’s colder (space) that’s the problem.

Imagine a water vapor molecule high in the atmsophere absorbs IR from a distant galaxy. Now what? The molecule sends this IR back into space, and the telescope below doesn’t see the galaxy signal. Duh!

If that molecule sent the galactic signal down then there would be no problem for astronomers!

Seriously, how would surface infrared telescopes work if GHGs emitted ~155 W/m^2 toward the surface?

          Zoe,

While I agree with your comments on downwelling IR being a nonsense concept I find your barrow pushing of “geothermal” energy equally concerning.

Thermodynamic analysis of the type used by global warming enthusiasts is seriously lacking when they ignore significant factors and base their analysis on nonsense.

So many people quote the results obtained by inputting figures into the S_B equation without any consideration whatsoever of the multiple factors at work in the system under analysis.

If we reverse the initials of the equation we get BS.
This is significant in helping to refute the idea that CO2 is some sort of super, heat trapping gas that is a once and future danger.

Some years ago when basic scientists began looking at the claims about CO2 they did two things.

The first was to stop laughing; the second was to point out that the concept was a nonsense.

The Algorrythm , IPCCCCC etc responded by saying that there had been a misunderstanding and that the greatest effect was that the CO2 triggered off the main Greenhouse Active Gas: water.

Basic science knows that the Dangerous Greenhouse Gas nonsense is just that; Nonsense.

That’s enough to squash the whole deal but unfortunately we remain relatively powerless against the dark forces of Media and Politics.

One of the problems with this type of analysis is that the atmospheric movement of mass, the creation of momentum, and the heating of stationary objects is also ignored; besides the photosynthesis type usage mentioned above.

I wonder whether cicadas are included in such a study. Some species of cicacas emerge from the ground in spring every 17 years, breed then go underground again. Millions of young hatch and those that survive the predators also go underground, and emerge 17 years later. I can just see the climate change believers, the ones tell us a 10 year record high temperature is proof of climate change, who haven’t seen or heard a cicada for 16 years, would tell us the cicadas are extinct.

    Macron re-emerges as a “climate leader”/career pollie?

14 Feb: Reuters: Macron says Mont Blanc glacier melting proves global warming
    by Johnny Cotton, Noemie Olive
CHAMONIX, France – French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday the melting of Mont Blanc’s main glacier is irrefutable proof of global warming, as he sought to burnish his environmentalist credentials ahead of municipal elections next month.

During a visit to the “Mer de Glace” (sea of ice) – France’s largest glacier which has shrunk dramatically in recent years – Macron met scientists and announced new protective measures for the area, including higher fines for littering.
“What we are seeing with the evolution of the glacier is irrefutable proof of global warming and climate change and the toppling of an entire ecosystem,” Macron said in a speech after going up the glacier.

The Alpine glacier above the mountain town of Chamonix has been a tourist draw since the 19th century, but over the course of the 20th century it lost an average thickness of 50 metres (164 ft). The shrinking has sped up in the past two decades.
“A landscape is being deformed before our eyes and species are disappearing quickly. The fight for biodiversity is a fight for our own survival and is inseparable from the fight against global warming,” Macron said…

Critics say that following the success of France’s green party at the 2019 European Union election and with municipal elections due in March, the Chamonix visit and other ecology-themed actions are an attempt at courting the green vote…
On Friday, on the sidelines of a visit to Munich, Macron will meet leaders of Germany’s Green party.

nearby Argentiere Glacier: retreat began at the end of the Little Ice Age?

    Wikipedia: Argentière Glacier
It is one of the larger glaciers found within the Mont Blanc massif, and is situated above the village of Argentière. It lies perpendicular to the Chamonix valley and falls within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region…
Between 1870 and 1967, the glacier shrunk 1000 meters. In recent years, it has receded to a position atop a steep slope.
The glacier’s rapid retreat has been linked to a continuous negative mass balance. A five-year study started in 2004 showed that the glacier had lost an average of 1.5 m between 2004 and 2009, and that there was a 10–11m loss in average ice thickness from the glacier…
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argenti%C3%A8re_Glacier

    1968-1985 it advanced 300m:

Jan 2011: GlacierChange: Retreat of Glacier d’Argentiere, France
From 1968-1985 the glacier advanced 300 m. Since 1985 the glacier has been retreating at an increasing rate: 80 meters from 1991-1995, 187 meters from 1996-2000, 199 meters from 2001-2005, data is not in for the 2006-2010 period but the retreat is in excess of 200 meters…

2013: GeographicalResearchLetters: Little Ice Age glacier history of the Central and Western Alps from pictorial documents
      H.J. Zumbühl, S.U. Nussbaumer
During the LIA, the Mer de Glace nearly continuously reached the plain in the Chamonix Valley (maximal extensions in 1644 and 1821 AD). The retreat, beginning in the mid-1850s, was followed by a relatively stable position of the front (1880s until 1930s). Afterwards the retreat has continued until today, especially impressive after 1995. The perception of glaciers in the early times was dominated by fear. In the age of Enlightenment and later in the 19th century, it changed to fascination. In the 20th century, glaciers became a top attraction of the Alps, but today they are disappearing from sight. With a huge number of high-quality pictorial documents, it is possible to reconstruct the LIA history of many glaciers in the European Alps from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Thanks to these pictures, we get an image of the beauty and fascination of LIA glaciers, ending down in the valleys…

Such studies must include the implicit assumption that animals are as stupid as the people who believe the results. The problem is that animals are not stupid. If temperatures get warmer the animals go somewhere where it’s cooler. Climate change believers, on the other hand, just complain that the heat is caused by climate change and the only way to stop it is to build more solar panels and wind turbines, and stop all coal mining.

Here in the States, there is currently a re-run on TV about planet Earth, narrated by David Attenborough. The claim is made that the 3% of Earth that is tropical supports 50% of the known species of life. Based on that, it sounds like life likes warm temperatures.

The graph may be flawed in that for the Holocene ice core data from Greenland and Antarctica is used then compared to the present day Berkley Earth land sea average. The ice core temperature variability of Greenland compared to Antarctica as the warming cycle began and again for the Younger Dryas emphasises the stability of Antarctica. It would seem appropriate to use the atmospheric oxygen isotope ratio immediately above the Epica Dome ice sheet to provide a consistent baseline.

Two days ago one of the biggest construction contractors for the RE industry…Downer Group…..exited the field completely …saying it had become ‘too hard’…citing power loss factors…grid stability problems..connection problems …equipment performance issues…their big rival in the field also having ‘gone bust’ …liquidated ..in 2018.

On the same day Chief Scientist Finkel plugged his hydrogen plan …actually RE mogul Garnaut’s plan that all the usual suspects are regurgitating…..in recognition that wind…solar and their props can’t cut it….because… in Finkel’s words … ‘there’s a limit to how much solar and wind we can use and still maintain a stable system’.

There was not one question from the high-paid all-LEFT journalists there about either statements…which ..considering the massive upheaval and destabilization…and in the end de-industrialization….Australians are being forced to endure due to the Turnbull/Morrison/Labor juggernaut and the squillions flushed on it….is obscene.

There were no questions from the Press gallery about the huge unsolved problems with hydrogen…especially metal embrittlement and inevitable leakage problems that can cause a catastrophic explosion hazard….just a desperate leap to hydrogen with no care for costs and dangers….ad hoc helter skelter towards chaos.

Finkel said the cost of firmed wind and solar electricity is about the same as that of a HELE coal plant…but doesn’t say…and no journalist asked…since CCS is part of their hydrogen plan…why we couldn’t just opt for HELE coal with CCS instead of hydrogen with CCS…or what would be massively preferable…..CCC.

U would think these uber-environmentalists would resist to the death burying billions of tonnes per year of the demon gas CO2 near our precious aquifers …after piping it through towns and countryside wouldn’t you?

Does anyone know what’s happened during 2019 with RMIT’s hugely promising ‘CO2 to solid carbon’ process?

After a flurry of attention in early 2019 it’s been total silence….canned perhaps because that CCC technology might serve to justify HELE coal plants….helping them to reliably power Australia …inherently providing all the services for stability and security of the system 24/7…whatever the weather…Australia’s sovereignty and security maintained without having to bow to global Socialism?

Australian LW hacks on a mission for Socialism…are very careful not to ask a question that might inform the Australian people and allow them to see they’re being criminally conned on the most consequential existential issue Australian will ever face short of war.

IMO these hacks…. who are hugely paid for propaganda….gossip and plotting against Australia while hiding behind the ‘public right to know’ concept that they thumb their noses at every single day…should have no special rights…should go to jail as anyone else would if they’d elicited or solicited …stolen goods or information….especially information that could hurt Australia.

On The Drum this week Margy Osmond of Tourism Australia puffed tourism as a provider of jobs for all the coal and other regional workers destined to lose jobs in the Left’s intermittents-powered Australia.

But IMO there’ll be no tourism to speak of in Australia after the next few years.

Long-haul aviation is the biggest emitter of CO2 of all…and experts say long haul flights will never be electricity-powered…..as some regional flights could be.

So this is the cruncher for the uber-rich hoaxers…will they ban long-haul flights ‘for the planet’…massively disrupting world commerce and confining whole populations to their own countries unless prepared ..and able to afford…to travel via hydrogen-powered ships-the hydrogen required, made by weather-dependent intermittents …or will they continue the long-haul flights at such massive expense that only the uber-rich Socialists who are running this racket plus other global criminals will be able to afford to travel…so that only they will have the top jobs of course and so only they will decide absolutely everything…including whether the rest of us live or die.

If long-haul travel survives …we’ll then know without shadow of a doubt…..that we’re victims of the hoax of the millennium.

Either way Australia will be ever more isolated from the world … poor and insecure….and Margy Osmond can kiss goodbye to her tourism boom.

Lexus and Vovan, a duo of Russian YouTubers, are notorious for their pranks of Western politicians and celebrities. They’ve recently launched a show called ‘Stars Save the Earth’, in which they play tricks over the phone posing as Greta Thunberg and her father.
In audio from an 11-minute phone call posted to YouTube on Thursday, Bernie Sanders thinks he is speaking to the 17-year-old environmental activist Greta Thunberg and her father Svante…

The Vermont senator goes on to lament about Donald Trump’s scepticism regarding climate change: “We have a president of the United States now who not only does not recognise the crisis of climate change, but he is actually encouraging more production of fossil fuels. He’s doing exactly the wrong thing.”…

Sanders takes the bait and inquires whether they were planning to come to the United States in the next few months.
They reply that they would be there in February 2020 (the call apparently took place some time last year), and Sanders says he would be “very appreciative” if they spoke out in support of his candidacy…

‘Svante’ asks Bernie for advice on what to do with their alleged invitation to Russia, and he recommends gauging the Russian government’s opinion on climate change before going there, to make the trip as effective as possible…

Vovan and Lexus, who’ve trolled figures like Elton John and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, have recently pranked Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters and Joaquin Phoenix posing as Greta Thunberg and her father as part of their show “Stars Save the Planet”…

13 Feb: TheHill: Carville fires back at Sanders for ‘hack’ slam: ‘At least I’m not a communist’
      By Joe Concha
The back and forth follows a week in which Carville has repeatedly sounded the alarm about a potential Sanders matchup against President Trump in November, calling the scenario “the end of days” for the Democratic Party while referring to Sanders supporters as “a cult.”

Sanders returned fire on Wednesday night during an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, arguing that “political hack” Carville represents the establishment his campaign is running against.
“James, in all due respect, is a political hack,” Sanders said. “We are taking on Trump, the Republican establishment, Carville and the Democratic establishment. But at the end of the day, the grassroots movement that we are putting together — of young people, of working people, of people of color — want real change.”

Carville, who worked as a campaign strategist for former President Clinton, escalated the feud Thursday on Snapchat with former CNN reporter Peter Hamby.
“Last night on CNN, Bernie Sanders called me a political hack,” Carville said. “That’s exactly who the f— I am! I am a political hack! I am not an ideologue. I am not a purist. He thinks it’s a pejorative. I kinda like it! At least I’m not a communist.”…

13 Feb: BBC: Alok Sharma to be president of UN climate conference
    By David Shukman
A little known minister has landed the key job of running the UN’s next big climate summit later this year.
In Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Cabinet reshuffle, Alok Sharma becomes Business Secretary and “president” of the crucial event…

The initial announcement about Alok Sharma, who was International Development Secretary, did not specifically mention that he would be president of the conference.
The Downing Street press office later confirmed to me that he would be chairing the event, and that puts him right at the centre of some very difficult international negotiations…

Back in May 2019, Mr Sharma wrote that there was “an unstoppable momentum” towards more ambitious global action – the coming months will reveal whether he can help deliver that…
Mohammed Adow of the climate think tank Power Shift Africa and a long-time observer of the UN negotiations, said he was worried that Mr Sharma was starting in the role with only nine months to go…

Mr Sharma trained as an accountant and worked in banking before entering politics 10 years ago as MP for Reading West.
In a speech last month, at a UK-Africa investment summit, he spoke of the “undeniable implications” of climate change.
“The huge burden of climate change will not be shared equally or fairly across the world.
“Many developing countries are already bearing the brunt of its impact,” he said.

We want to see investment that builds self-sustaining economies…
And investments that properly consider their impact on the environment.
The City of London is the global gateway to sustainable international investment for Africa.
London is the biggest centre for foreign exchange trading; and the largest for cross-border banking…

Many UK businesses are already benefitting from these opportunities, and are here today.
I also saw this first-hand on a recent visit to Kenya
Cambridge-based business called Azuri Technologies which provides solar energy systems to off-grid homes across Africa…

Accomplishing the UN’s Global Goals for a healthier, wealthier, more equal, and greener world by 2030 will require an immense amount of work and crucially more private investment.
The huge burden of Climate Change will not be shared equally or fairly across the world.
Many developing countries are already bearing the brunt of its impact.
      Future growth must be sustainable.
It needs to consider the undeniable implications of climate change.

That is why the Prime Minister today announced that the UK will no longer provide any direct investment or assistance to thermal coal mining and power plants overseas.
We have seen at this summit the commercial potential for clean energy, alongside the appetite from investors to power growth in Africa.
      We must harness that potential…

should have included this excerpt from Alok Sharma’s speech:

“As we have heard today by 2050, more than two billion people will live in Africa.
“One in four global consumers will be African.

14 Feb: Guardian: Odd choices: Johnson’s reshuffle rewards loyal pro-Brexit MPs
From a tepid environmentalist to lead at Cop26 to an attorney general at odds with courts, critics question appointees
    by Guardian staff
    Alok Sharma
As president of the crunch UN Cop26 climate talks to be hosted by the UK this November, Sharma has a critical role. Yet he showed little interest in the climate emergency before taking over as secretary for international development last July. He has used the term “climate” only six times in parliament, and on only two of those occasions did he have anything substantive to say about the crisis.

A Guardian analysis showed he voted only twice in favour of climate protection in 13 votes on the issue. Campaigners are also concerned that his dual role as business secretary will make him beholden to powerful vested interests. However, he did urge the World Bank last October to devote more funding to the climate…

13 Fen: DeSmogUK: Alok Sharma: The Minister with Nine Months to Prepare UK for Global Climate Talks
    By Zak Derler
Sharma has been a chairman of and served on the Council for the Bow Group, a free market think-tank closely linked to a number of organisations that have lobbied against strong climate action.
The Bow Group describes itself as “one of the most influential centre right think-tanks in Britain” and claims to exist to “develop policy, public research and stimulate debate within the Conservative Party”.

A number of MPs with questionable climate change records have sat alongside Sharma on the committee, including MEP Campbell Bannerman, who once called European environmentalists “the EU Green Taliban”, and MP John Redwood, who said he was pleased to hear of a proposal that would remove global warming from the national curriculum and has previously asserted that climate change was a natural phenomenon for which humans were not responsible.

Some members of the Bow Group, including John Redwood and Martin McElwee, have also been involved with the Institute of Economic Affairs and the Taxpayer’s Alliance – two organisations known to lobby against strong environmental regulation.

Sharma has also been accused of having ties with the Kremlin. In 2017, an article by Carole Cadwalladr, the journalist who exposed the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica data scandal, discussed how Sharma had several confirmed meetings with ***Joseph Mifsud, a Maltese academic embroiled in the controversy over the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia. Mifsud’s current whereabouts are unknown…

13 Feb: UK Independent: Climate crisis: Plan to dam entire North Sea could protect millions from rising oceans
Global failure to tackle emissions may mean ‘extreme’ infrastructure project is needed to save cities from submersion, scientists warn
    by Harry Cockburn
PIC: The ***Oosterscheldekering (PART OF DELTA WORKS) is the largest of thirteen existing dams and storm surge barriers, designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea
The floodwaters are coming for us. Sea levels are rising faster and could swell one to two metres in the next 80 years if greenhouse gas emissions are not swiftly reined in, according to the latest research (LINK) by UN scientists…

    So what can be done?
One mega-infrastructure scheme put up for discussion by a Dutch government scientist suggests addressing the issue in northern Europe by damming in the entire North Sea.
This would require the construction of two dams of unprecedented scale. The smaller of the two would be around 100 miles long and block the entire western end of the English Channel, between Brittany in France and Cornwall in England.
The second dam would be a monster 300 miles long, and would cross the top of the North Sea between Scotland, running south of the Shetland and Orkney islands, and all the way over to Norway.

The plan would also mean the Baltic Sea would lose direct access to the rest of the world’s oceans.
The result would ultimately be the creation of an enormous lake to the south and east of Britain, around western Norway, north France, and would represent the entire coastlines of Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Netherlands and Germany…

The scientists predict the successful completion of the project could protect 25 million Europeans against sea level rise in the coming centuries.
They estimate it would cost €250-500bn (£210-420bn), or “merely” 0.1 per cent of the gross national product of all the countries that would be protected. In comparison, the UK’s HS2 rail project is costing £106bn…

The suggestion of a massive dam for the North Sea comes days after a similar scheme was proposed to protect New York…
Donald Trump tweeted on 18 January: “A massive 200 Billion Dollar Sea Wall, built around New York to protect it from rare storms, is a costly, foolish & environmentally unfriendly idea that, when needed, probably won’t work anyway. It will also look terrible. Sorry, you’ll just have to get your mops & buckets ready!”

    ***Wikipedia: Delta Works
    PIC: Oosterscheldekering (WIKIPEDIA LINK)
The estuaries of the rivers Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt have been subject to flooding over the centuries. After building the Afsluitdijk (1927 – 1932), the Dutch started studying the damming of the Rhine-Meuse Delta. Plans were developed to shorten the coastline and turn the delta into a group of freshwater coastal lakes. By shortening the coastline, fewer dikes would have to be reinforced…

The commission initially set the acceptable risk for complete failure of every “dike ring” in the country at 1 in 125,000 years. But, it found that the cost of building to this level of protection could not be supported. It set “acceptable” risks by region as follows:
North and South Holland (excluding Wieringermeer): 1 per 10,000 years
Other areas at risk from sea flooding: 1 per 4,000 years
Transition areas between high land and low land: 1 per 2,000 years…

River flooding also has a longer warning time, producing a lower estimated death toll per event.
South Holland at risk from river flooding: 1 per 1,250 years
Other areas at risk from river flooding: 1 per 250 years…

Due to climate change and relative sea-level rise, the dikes will eventually have to be made higher and wider. This is a long term uphill battle against the sea. The needed level of flood protection and the resulting costs are a recurring subject of debate, and involve a complicated decision-making process. In 1995 it was agreed in the Delta Plan Large Rivers and Room for the River projects that about 500 kilometres of insufficient dyke revetments were reinforced and replaced along the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde between 1995 and 2015. After 2015, under the High Water Protection Program, additional upgrades are made.

In September 2008, the Delta Commission presided by politician Cees Veerman advised in a report that the Netherlands would need a massive new building program to strengthen the country’s water defenses against the anticipated effects of global warming for the next 190 years. The plans included drawing up worst-case scenarios for evacuations and included more than €100 billion, or $144 billion, in new spending through the year 2100 for measures, such as broadening coastal dunes and strengthening sea and river dikes. The commission said the country must plan for a rise in the North Sea of 1.3 meters by 2100 and 4 meters by 2200…

13 Feb: NYT: San Francisco and Manila Face Rising Seas
Somini Sengupta, The New York Times global climate reporter, and Chang W. Lee, a photographer for The Times, traveled to the Philippines and California to see how rising sea levels are affecting two big metropolitan areas
According to scientific projections, the oceans stand to rise by one to four feet by the end of the century, with projections of more ferocious storms and higher tides that could upend the lives of entire communities…

Manila allowed groundwater to be pumped out so fast that the land sagged and turned into a bowl just as the sea was rising. The Bay Area allowed people to build right at the water’s edge, putting homes, highways, even airports at risk of catastrophic flooding…
Now, Manila and the Bay Area face tough choices. They could adapt to the rising tide, which could mean moving people out of harm’s way. Or, they could try to force the water to adapt to their needs by raising their defenses…

“Climate change doesn’t create its own impacts. It magnifies wrong policies,” said Renato Redentor Constantino, executive director of the Manila-based Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities. “This is the case with sea level rise. A large part of Metropolitan Manila is facing more water-related impacts because of decades of myopic, cross-eyed land use planning.”…

A rising sea underscores the missteps of the past in the Bay Area, too.
The Pacific has risen 4 to 8 inches along the Northern California shore over the last century — and so, too, the San Francisco Bay, the ocean’s largest estuary in the Americas. Depending on the growth of greenhouse gas emissions, the Pacific could rise 2.4 to 3.4 feet by 2100, which is why the California Coastal Commission has encouraged city governments to start planning for the future, either by fortifying their flood defenses, restoring wetlands, or, in some instances, making people move…
Voters in San Francisco have approved a $425 million bond measure to start fortifying a sea wall along the bayfront road, the Embarcadero. Along the road sits some of the city’s most expensive real estate…

“We basically built everything just about at the high tide line,” said Laura Tam, a policy director at SPUR, a Bay Area urban planning and research group. “Nothing was built thinking of future changes in tides. We didn’t think about sea level rise.”…

The dire predictions of the climate change cult seem to rely on the idea the earth’s climate is an unstable positive feedback system where the slightest drift away from the perfect ‘null balance’ point inevitably causes an avalanche to the saturation point. If this were the case, we would have either been permanently fried or frozen long before now. Dunno anything about climate science but I’d bet money on their being substantial and deeply integrated negative feedback systems in our climate system.

Bookies however, being very good at calculating odds wouldn’t make it worth it. Miserable buggers!

If the report on Electroverse is true and NOAA has had it’s funding reduced by 31% and their data shows a cooling trend. Next on funding the lists should be removal of government subsidies for ‘renewables’.

Extinction and “its happening too fast” are the two biggest pieces of garbage accepted by the public.

Biodiversity is also an over rated nonsense theory. We destroy biodiversity to grow food. The new ecosystem has a level of biodiversity that is sufficient and impossible to destroy. If biodiversity was so important we’d all live in a rainforest. But if you do, you’re likely to die quite quickly.

The most alarming thing about AGW is the alarming number of people that are concerned about it.

It is the post-modern IQ test of which true belief in AGW is an instant proof of a lack of native intelligence.

It is said that common sense is not that common and climate hysteria is the proof of this from observation. But it can have application.

Belief in AGW is a good way to identify those employees suitable for redundancy if you need to downscale, especially if you are trying to identify the best and brightest to retain.

Alternatively if you are looking for more lemming-like, routine workers where independent thought can be a challenge to manage in the role, belief can be used to identify those most suitable as worker bees.

This was a good interview with Malcolm Roberts on the engineered crisis and recent flip-flopping by the Liberals and Nationals leadership.

I wish Mal were running his party. He’s such a better communicator than the current leader with a much better grasp on the most important issue of our time; Creeping ‘Green’ Communism.
