Let’s not put race politics in our science lessons
Science has no race — it is true, or it isn’t. But once we start deleting one race or judging one scientific hero by the color of their skin, we can still make science lessons racist. It’s just another anti-white virtue-signalling thing. Instead of teaching children how the world works, someone thinks we should teach them topics that make the Minister sound good at UN cocktail parties.
The UK Labour government wants to overhaul school science — if only they knew what science was. They got an “independent” review to tell them what they wanted to hear and invited the grovelling Royal Society’s of Science to sell out science to the latest Woke intellectual fashion. Shame on them.
Real science is about evidence, not the color of your skin, or the continent your last 1,000 ancestors lived on. It can’t be “de-Westernized” because it isn’t “Western” — the laws of physics work just as well in England as they do in Bangladesh. Hypersonic rockets don’t care what language you speak, penicillin kills streptococcus in the East and the West, and gravity sucks us all. Its universality is what makes science so fantastically useful, and ultimately so unifying. We are all just homo sapiens in this together, trying to comprehend the big world.
Naturally the UK Labour government want to screw that all up, as if science was just another kind of Arts degree:

All children need to know what science is, they don’t need to be patronized. There’s a devastating condescension, a racist underbelly to the idea that someone with Hispanic, Malaysian, Kenyan or whatever skin can only learn science if we can teach them through neolithic folk songs or just-so-stories about imaginary ancestors. Spare them the soft racism of low expectations. How unforgivably demeaning.
All children should “feel included” in science because the laws of physics and chemistry apply to them; because they use phones, fly in planes and get x-rays.
Then, after all students learn what science is (observation, hypothesis, prediction, and testing with rigorous skepticism) then they can go to social studies classes to find out how scientific heroes changed the lives of millions, and why the discipline of science was crucial to the West, and how the search for truth became embedded in the dominant Western culture.
We don’t want more social studies in our science lessons, we want more science in our social studies…
They can learn the physics of electromagnetism in their science class, and talk about the impact of Michael Faraday in their history lessons and how he had to teach himself, and how his idea of electric fields and electric motors changed the world.
Killing off Western heroes is something communists and enemies want
Deleting the heroes of science (and the heroes of the UK) is a great way to demoralize and divide a generation. Instead of inspiring kids of all colors to grow up to be Alexander Fleming, the Labour Party want to teach children that their culture is not different, not worth fighting for, and not worth passing on to their own kids.
It’s a stupid way to run a country:
The Royal Society of Biology also said it had sought expertise on ‘decolonising the curriculum’ and for a ‘no more heroes’ approach to teaching science in schools.
This would mean ‘avoiding prescriptive lists of historic figures in biology’ and instead ‘exploring opportunities for local, recogniseable, diverse historic and contemporary figures through which discovery and exploration of biological concepts can be explored’.
President Xi would be pleased.
This is a test to see if we will resist. Mock it accordingly so the people that spout this craven nonsense crawl back in their holes.

David, I think I have failed on that. My 26 yo grandson, one of three children of very left wing parents (including our daughter, unfortunately) studiously fails to reply to emails I send with interesting scientific information on many of the subjects covered here. He even fails to acknowledge an email inquiring as to whether he received the first email, and I know he did! Sad really, but apart from that he is a splendid young man and I admire his many good attributes.

By quoting statistics covering the prizes issued by others, I wonder why they feel they have the right to vote you down. If the data had instead said that the awards were mostly won by monkeys swinging from trees, then that detail would be a fact, stating it does make the detail more or less, (morally), right or wrong. It’s just a fact.

There are several cultural, socio-economic and geographical factors that underlie the dominance of Kenyan runners in distance races. It’s nothing to do with ideology. It’s the altitude, a lack of transport and the culture of running that is necessitated by that lack of transport.
On a side note, it’s refreshing to read an article by a journalist who is prepared to get down and dirty and just report what they see. A lot of science has been based on observations and objective note taking, it would be nice if modern day institutions could adopt this age old practice.

I presume you are taking that figure from the percentage of the votes cast that went to Labour – one of the lowest proportions of the vote achieved by a government. However, when looking at the electorate the vote for Labour was just 20% of those registered. And looking further, many of those who voted were voting against the socialist Tory government and not for a Labour government. Speaking of Out of Africa:
Today’s lesson is on gravity. Thousands of years ago Chief Mbotu Swazalaylee took a break during his trek across Africa when relocating his tribe. While lying under the shade of a hippopotamus skin held aloft by some of his slaves a flock of small birds started flying at the skin trying to peck off the bits of rotting flesh still attached to it. Some of the slaves who had been fanning Chief Mbotu tried to swot them away but to no avail.
The Chief’s number 15 wife, knowing how brutal the Chief could become when annoyed, picked up a stone and threw it at the birds however missing the target the stone instead hit the Chief in the head.

Thousands of years later in the 17th century western scientists regularly used data collected from around the world, including Africa, in their quest for scientific knowledge. No doubt Sir Isaac Newton would have heard of the Chief Mbotu rock and bird song, and this would have been fore front of his mind when he suffered a similar event when an apple hit him on the head, and he ascribed the word “gravity” to Chief Mbotu’s earlier discovery.

Developing knowledge is important and so is what you do with it. Back in the 90s I was admiring a long mural depicting a timeline of Chinese culture vs European culture over the last couple of thousand years up to about WW2. It showed how China had a sophisticated culture while Europeans were subsisting in mud huts.

I’m always amazed how the science or origins of fully evolved Humans has changed over the last 25 years.
Chris Hichens in the late 1990s debates always quoted Dawkins etc and claimed that modern Humans had been present for about 50,000 to 100,000 years BP , but soon he’d changed to perhaps 150,000 years.
Today that has doubled to 300,000 + years and I know a number of Scientists think it is still too short an estimate for fully evolved Humans.

Its absurd to think that all races are equal in all things. Equivalent yes, all humans are valuable and all lives matter, but not equal. And racism is bad. Depending on evolutionary pressures, some may have a predisposition to athleticism (chasing game for long distances), tolerance of dehydration (desert environment), ability to work at high altitudes (Sherpas who have high blood oxygenation due to a mutation), or problem solving (people in temperate to cold zones who had to work out how to predict seasons for agriculture and work out solutions to keeping warm). Academic and athletic statistics point towards certain obvious undeniable trends. Of course, its not to say someone can’t also excel in an endeavour that their predecessor population didn’t evolve for. There are many examples of that as well.

No one says all people are equal. This is an extraordinarily common reading of all men are created equal. In the US Constitution ” “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.’
But they are created equal under the law with equal rights. That the poorest man is the same under the law as the King. It is the basic tenet of Judeo Christian religion too and its greatest attraction around the world. It humbles the greatest kings. And elevates and educates and trains and enables the poorest people. It has been the guiding spirit of Christian civilizations too.
It does not mean all people are equal and some more equal than others. Nor does it support DEI. And Post Modernism, reconstructed Marxism sows division by insisting that if you are less capable, that will be ignored. And that every basketball team should include a dwarf, proportional skin colour, religion and multiple genders.
Equality of opportunity is not equality of outcome. People should be judged on their merits regardless of race and creed. But meritocracy is the natural enemy of the Post Modern education system where merit is abhored, tests are shunned, skills are dismissed and facts are ignored. All this is anti science, anti intelligence, anti social, even extreme racism and the basis for absolutism by the ruling classes. The elites. Do not educate the poor or they will challenge you.
And no one has done education or administration better than the British. It is a tragedy for the British to now change course and rubbish meritocracy as oppression. Education and quality of education is the basis of all advancement and finding the best person for the job, regardless of race and religion. And to do this on the basis of facts as in examination and testing. Who wants a surgeon or pilot or mentor who scored 50% but was the right colour or religion or social group? That’s when the door fall off the aircraft because no one did their job.
Like Climate Change, this is an assault on Rational Science and liberty by the natural enemies of education, the elites who seek to enshrine their own position by denying science and the pursuit of excellence. From that pursuit comes a better society. Not rule by a self appointed elite, especially academics who have never had a real job where they actually had to achieve something.

Our science curriculum at schools is full of indigenous cross curriculum content that seeks to elevate indigenous knowledge systems into something it is not. Same to in mathematics. In fact our national science framework (I think that is what it is called) puts indigenous knowledge systems at the centre of all things science and seeks to fuse “western science” with “indigenous science”. It is all about downgrading Western culture and elevating indigenous culture to be equal, or even superior, often with claims of indigenous people being the “first scientists”. It sadly debases the meaning of science and is patronising of indigenous history and culture, ironically applying western centric measures of achievement in the pursuit of decolonising the national curriculum, while downgrading their spiritual basis for understanding the world as they saw it.
