Comment Rules
Constructive comments and questions from all sides of the climate change debate are welcome. In order to promote debate, posts often go up first with moderation post-publication. People who abuse this will not be able to keep posting.
The site relies on commenters self-editing. If we have to [snip] someone too much they don’t qualify to post here. (At least not without paying the annual subscription fee of A$1.2 million*.)
Comments may be deleted or edited if they are: Unnecessarily repetitive, rude, lazy or mindless, about administration/moderation, or too boring.
- ‘Lazy’ is at my discretion: eg someone who posts broad generalized statements that are unsubstantiated. People who ‘substantiate’ one liners with generic links to large sites (with hundreds of pages) walk a thin line. It’s rude to expect the crowd to read through 12 pages of comments to find out how strong your case is. Links to giant sites, and complex papers are encouraged only if the poster sums up the concept before the link. Give us a clue as to what we are looking for. Better yet, explain it yourself, and use the link as a way for interested people to get more information.
- Rude: Means insults. Things that are out and out inflammatory will probably be deleted. Things that are borderline, but have an element of truth will either stay or go depending on i) the general tone of the comment, ii) the entertainment quotient or iii) random luck (I’m human). If you show some respect for other people (especially ones you disagree with), your comments will go through.
- Mindless: it’s usually pointless to speculate on motivations. They can never be scientific evidence, so they are unknowable, unproveable and usually irrelevant. The only exception is when the blog post itself is about “motivations”.
- Complaints about moderation: Moderation here is done by volunteers, it isn’t always perfect, and may not seem fair. Please start by emailing support AT joannenova.com.au. We will try to resolve things. It’s probably just an oversight. People who discuss moderation at length in threads (without emailing first) are spamming subscribers of threads.
- Boring: People who pedantically stick to all the rules but post so often, so much, irrelevant, technically correct but uninteresting stuff, risk being classed as “boring”.
Read the Guide for Commenting. We want debate, but not anonymous trolls who dominate threads. If someone posts a lot we expect them to meet higher standards. If they post too much we expect them to stop.
Hijacking nested comments: People who reply to the top comment solely to position themselves at the top of thread, will be viewed dimly. People who do it repeatedly may be uninvited. It’s queue jumping.
People who break these rules but who are exceptionally funny, or entertaining, will get forgiven.
A real working email address is needed so moderators can reach the person commenting, and people who don’t have one may be blocked from posting.
These rules are inherently subjective, and subject to change without notice. People who don’t like that, get their own blog.

Privacy
Real names get more respect, and they also deserve some protection from fake names who pop up to hit them. I detest spam too. As such, there are no guarantees of anonymity. Posters that use a government or publicly funded IP address that assume false identities for the purpose of hiding their source of opinion while on the taxpayers dime get preferential treatment for full disclosure. (Thanks to the brilliant A.Watts for that inspiration). But I’m sympathetic to whistle-blowers so if you need anonymity, and have a sincere contribution, I want to help. (That applies to people from either side of the AGW fence).
*Yes, with the first paying subscriber, I will employ moderators.
