Comment Rules
Constructive comments and questions from all sides of the climate change debate are welcome. In order to promote debate, posts often go up first with moderation post-publication. Please don’t abuse this.
Comments may be deleted or edited if they are: Unnecessarily repetitive, rude, lazy or mindless.
‘Lazy’ is at my discretion: eg someone who posts broad generalized statements that are unsubstantiated. People who ’substantiate’ one liners with generic links to large sites (with hundreds of pages) walk a thin line. It’s rude to expect the crowd to read through 12 pages of comments to find out how strong your case is. Links to giant sites, and complex papers are encouraged only if the poster sums up the concept before the link. Give us a clue as to what we are looking for. Better yet, explain it yourself, and use the link as a way for interested people to get more information.
Rude: Means insults. Things that are out and out inflammatory will have to be deleted. Things that are borderline, but have an element of truth will either stay or go depending on i) the general tone of the comment, ii) the entertainment quotient or iii) random luck (I’m human). If you show some respect for other people (especially ones you disagree with), you’re comments will go through.
Mindless: it’s usually pointless to speculate on motivations. They can never be scientific evidence, so they are unknowable, unproveable and usually irrelevant. The only exception is when the blog post itself is about the motivations behind the way the scientific and political process operates or is understood.
It’s not possible for me to moderate all comments 24/7, but as soon as I become aware of a defamatory comment I will remove or edit it. Please notify me if you see comments that are obscene, spammy, defamatory, or otherwise offensive.

Privacy
Real names get more respect, and they also deserve some protection from fake names who pop up to hit them. I detest spam too. As such, there are no guarantees of anonymity. Posters that use a government or publicly funded IP address that assume false identities for the purpose of hiding their source of opinion while on the taxpayers dime get preferential treatment for full disclosure. (Thanks to Anthony Watts for that inspiration).
