Lithium-ion battery fires: How to stay safe
From smartphones, tablets, scooters and electric cars to children’s toys, portable chargers, robot vacuums and electric toothbrushes, lithium-ion batteries are powering an increasing number of personal items. Over the past year, they’ve caused more than 1000 fires around Australia.
While the proportion of these batteries that end up combusting is relatively small, even for product categories that we think of as “commonly” exploding, such as Teslas, when they do go bad, they can cause a lot of damage.
Things can get especially nasty when the battery explodes indoors.
When firefighters identify a problem battery, they generally refer to it as having entered “thermal runaway”. This means that the energy in the battery is being released as heat faster than it can be dissipated, in a chain reaction that usually leads to intense flames that can cause a lot of damage in a short time, as well as toxic gas. In rare cases, it can lead to a vapour cloud explosion.
Battery fires can be especially vicious because of the amount of energy stored, with unmanaged fires potentially lasting for days (for a big battery, such as in a car) and burning at extremely high temperatures. Firefighters will often need to extinguish the fire by lifting the burning device and submerging it in a big container of water.
Are all devices with these batteries at risk of exploding?
The short answer is yes, but the risk varies greatly depending on the device.

The electrical distribution system of a coal-fired power station consists of two major electrical systems – the alternating
current (AC) system, and the direct current (DC) system.
The AC system is taken from the generator output and powers most of the unit auxiliaries required for power generation.
The DC system is a battery-backed, high reliability system that provides power to critical control and protection systems.
It also provides emergency backup to critical systems such as turbine lubrication oil and generator sealing oil.
The DC system (including battery back-up) powers the unit control, monitoring, and unit protection systems required for
the safe operation of Unit C4.
The DC system is powered by a combination of a battery charger and backup battery. The backup battery is critical to
the reliability of the DC system, as it enables the DC system to remain energised in the event of a charger failure or AC
power interruption.
Callide C includes three DC systems – Unit C3, Unit C4 and ‘Station’. The Station DC primarily provides redundancy
to both units.
All three DC systems include independent battery chargers and batteries (220V DC).
Unit protection systems monitor critical parameters of the unit and remove it from service (trip) if the safe operating
envelope is exceeded.
The turbine lubrication system provides lubrication oil to the turbine and generator bearings, allowing the rotor to rotate
with minimal friction. This system has redundancy and includes two AC pumps and an emergency DC pump.
The generator sealing oil system creates an oil pressure seal preventing the hydrogen gas, which cools the generator,
from escaping. This system has redundancy which includes an AC pump and an emergency DC pump.

Contributing factors
The significant contributors to the Unit C4 incident (identified in red in Figure 11) have been identified, and are
summarised below in order of importance:
1) Interlocking design preventing battery being connected during switching operation
The interlocking design prevents two batteries being connected in parallel during switching operations, therefore
limiting the reliability of the critical DC supply system to that of the AC supply system.
Had a charged battery been able to be connected through all switching operations, the incident would likely have
been prevented.
2) Unintended tripping due to arc flap protection
Loss of the AC supply due to arc flap protection on loss of DC supply was not an expected occurrence and is not
the intent of the protection design. This resulted in the loss of turbine oil pumps and prevented the battery charger
recovering the DC voltage.
Had the AC supply remained in service, the turbine oil and sealing oil pumps would have remained in service and it is
likely that the Unit C4 220V battery charger would have recovered the 220V DC, enabling the unit to trip on reverse
power in a matter of seconds.
Arc flap protection should only operate when the arc flaps operate and should be able to ride through short term
deviations in DC supply voltage.
3) Automatic Changeover Switch did not operate
The Automatic Changeover Switch did not automatically change over to the available Station Main 220V Switchboard
upon the loss of the Unit C4 Main Switchboard supply. This prevented the ‘Y’ Protection system from tripping the
generator and likely ending the generator motoring.
4) Failure of battery charger to maintain voltage
Upon opening of the Station Interconnector, the battery charger did not instantly maintain the DC voltage within the
required operating range.
Ensuring a battery is always connected reduces the criticality of the battery charger response time and is the
preferred method to address this.

I would add Steve Jobs who was fired by the revolutionary Computer company he founded with Steve Wozniak, Apple and went to work with a telephone company. What a piece of luck for the world. Yes, all the pieces were there, but he saw the potential and made it happen with an exceptional singlemindedness. He changed our lives. It was the luckiest firing in history.
Others like the internet itself were a case of serendipity, cascading opportunities. As we know it today, no one saw it coming, even the many inventors. Peer to peer download at CERN, TCP/IP, email for fun, world wide web, spiders, Google, facebook and the mobile phone, massive increases in bandwidth and CPU speed and Terabytes in your hand all the way to AI in your pocket. Explosive unplanned incremental development. Even UBER and AMAZON as we know them today were unplanned which is why people talk of pivots. The electric car except that battery technology has not kept up.
The compounding rate of change gives rise to exponential growth and in every direction.
Against this you get the fear people have of new things, so the growth of fear, that the world will explode somehow and the attraction of a mythical earlier time without coal and gas and electricity where people were happy.
This was the 18th century a time of great change with Napoleon shaking the world and Rousseau’s Noble Savage, the absurd idea that people with nothing were happier, content without endless wars of greed. And now we have politicians trying to make it happen and so pull down everything achieved, certainly in Australia. People against everything. Just stop oil, computers, agriculture, manufacturing and live on mineral wealth. It’s what bankrupted Spain and they have never recovered.

The academic enterprise will look at the “political nature of this everyday substance”.

So slap bang in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis what does the Albanese government do?
It asks parliament to approve a whopping $214,000 pay rise for the incoming Governor General Sam Mostyn.
And that’s not even a joke.
The current GG David Hurley earns a mere $495,000, but that’s not good enough according to Labor.
The assistant minister to the PM, Patrick Gorman, has tabled legislation seeking parliamentary support from the Opposition and the crossbench to bump Mostyn’s salary from $495,000 to $709,000 when she starts the new job on Monday.
The old GG’s salary was more than cabinet ministers earn. The new one is more than the Prime Minister earns.

Baldwin Street, in Dunedin, New Zealand, has been reinstated as the world’s steepest street (road) after a formal record review.
Baldwin street previously held the record for over a decade until June 2019, when the record was awarded to Ffordd Pen Llech, in Harlech, Wales.
The decision to reinstate the previous record holder was reached following the completion of an extensive review of an appeal, brought by representatives of Baldwin Street.
Following a thorough review, as well as consulting with industry specialists, it was concluded that for the steepest street (road) record title, the best practice for the gradient is to take the measurement from the centreline of the street.
Accordingly, GWR’s record guidelines will no longer allow measurements from any other axis.
The new results confirmed Baldwin Street has the steeper gradient of 34.8%, compared to Ffordd Pen Llech’s gradient of 28.6%.

Sydney residents have been dealt a year’s worth of rain in just six months with the latest downpour on the weekend significantly bringing up the city’s running monthly total.
Following the latest round of wet weather, the city’s running monthly total was brought up to about 361mm – more than double the long-term monthly average.
It also means Sydney has experienced its wettest June since 2007.
The city’s running annual total was increased to about 1240mm – exceeding the city’s long-term annual average of about 1213mm.
It marks the 10th time in 166 years the city has been recorded to exceed 1200mm of cumulative rainfall by the same point in June.
This year now ranks as the city’s eighth wettest start to a year on record.

A lot of it has salt under it from about 2 feet down – where the rainfall since has washed it.

Europe may subject travelers to lie detector tests
Authorities at airports and ferry ports would use cameras equipped with machine-learning software to detect whether a person is being untruthful.
