Only 20% of US people think the media even try to be unbiased on politics

Media spotlightThe good news is that a majority of people are aware of media bias, and are skeptical of what the media tells them. The bad news is that this is just another marker showing the average Western citizen is losing faith in the integrity of so many key institutions.

The activist journo’s have overplayed their hand. They are not even trying…

“Voters Expect Reporters To Help Clinton Over Trump”

[July 21st, 2016] A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that only 20% of Likely U.S. Voters think that when covering a political campaign, most reporters try to offer unbiased coverage. Most (69%) say reporters try to help the candidate they want to win. Eleven percent (11%) are not sure  (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The media have lost so much influence. They described Brexiteers as loony, selfish and xenophobic, but more than half the country ignored them and voted for Brexit. Similarly, the US media mocked and denigrated Trump supporters, and continually predicted he wouldn’t stay in the race, and wouldn’t make it through the primaries, and  yet he did. Poor pundits keep being surprised by the people.

The key word in this survey is “try” — everyone knows humans have some kind of bias, but the survey asked “do most reporters try to offer unbiased coverage or do they try to help the candidate they want to win?”

Mainstream news has become an advertising forum for big government, but the dumb voters can see through it.

Nearly 50% of US voters think the media is biased against Trump. Nearly 20% say it’s against Hillary.

Voters See More Anti-Trump, Pro-Hillary Bias in Media

[May 2016] … Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 49% of Likely U.S. Voters think most reporters are biased against Trump, the presumptive Republican party presidential nominee, up from 47% in December before the official start of the primary season. By contrast, only 18% believe most reporters are biased against Clinton, the likely Democratic nominee, and that’s down from 23% six months ago.

Just 36% say most reporters are not biased against Trump, while 67% think most are not biased against Clinton. That compares to 31% and 59% respectively in the previous survey. Roughly 15% remain undecided on both questions. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Most voters have said in surveys for years that reporters try to help the candidate they want to win.

Two-out-of-three voters (66%) think the news media has too much power and influence over elections. Forty-seven percent (47%) consider media bias a bigger problem than big campaign contributions in politics today, but nearly as many (45%) now see big campaign contributions as the larger concern.

the MSM’s collusion with the Clinton campaign has been exposed in the DNC emails released by Wikileaks.

so what does the MSM do to regain trust with their audience?
    it doubles down:

Fairfax was out of the gate early, and proud of it:

23 Jul: SMH: Chris Zappone: US fears over Donald Trump’s connections with Vladimir Putin’s Russia
Fears Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump may be pursuing a Russian agenda with his candidacy have triggered a wave of alarm in the US…
The concerns have prompted a series of high-profile American commentators and analysts to suggest Mr Trump may be getting backing from Russia for his US campaign.
Respected publications such as Slate, economist Paul Krugman writing in The New York Times, and The Washington Post have commented on the convergence between Mr Trump’s statements and geopolitical positions that Russia has long sought, with worrying implications should Trump become president.
“Trump is making it clear that, as president, he would allow Russia to advance its hegemonic interests across Europe and the Middle East,” wrote Jeffrey Goldberg in The Atlantic…
Fairfax Media was among the first outlets to report on the overlap between Russian online support and the Trump campaign. The nature of the sometimes virulently anti-Semitic attacks on journalists who have written critically about Trump, the support of anonymous bloggers and voices, and even the use of confusion and violence at rallies match the kind of fear and intimidation tactics used in Eastern European campaigns…
    http://www.smh.com.au/world/us-election/us-fears-over-donald-trumps-connections-with-vladimir-putins-russia-20160723-gqcg8p.html

    Zappone at it in June:

24 Jun: Sott.net: Paul Mansfield: Aussie Media Steps into the Dizzying World of Russophobia
Chris Zappone of the Australian newspaper The Age plums the depths of stupefying Russophobia with an opinion piece titled “Donald Trump-Vladimir Putin: Russia’s information war meets the US election.” His message is, basically, next time you encounter a pesky social media troll, know that you have crossed swords with one of Vladimir Putin’s troopers in the information war against the West…
Zappone presents a confused, jumbled mess of “facts” cobbled together and slapped onto paper. A bit like taking a mud pie and just chucking it, hoping some will stick…
The article is a slovenly piece of worship of the establishment elites that control, and neo-liberal crony capitalism which has crippled, our societies…
The central premise — if we can call it that — of the article is that Russia is supportive of Donald Trump becoming the next President of the USA…

A salient quote from a recent blog on ‘Of Two Minds’. A site by Charles Hugh Smith.

“How Do We Make America Strong Again? Start Telling the Truth”

“You want to make America strong again? The only way to do so is to start telling the truth and insisting on the truth. Accepting statistical lies, propaganda and fraud as “truth” because it’s easy and doesn’t challenge our assumptions is a one-way road to ruin.”

To understand the nature of this problem, you need to understand the processes, and factors, involved – it gets a bit complicated.

      Fact: The Sheriff is dead.

Reporter asks the Deputy, “Who shot the Sheriff”?

The Deputy, who has no leads, and no evidence, but does not want to get into trouble with the Mayor, says, “We are pursuing enquiries, but we cannot discount it being someone from out of town”.

The Reporter then goes to see the Mayor, to ask what is being done to track down the stranger. This is the first time the Mayor has heard about, “the stranger”, so extemporises by saying, “We are considering putting a possie together right now”.

A possie is duly formed, at the insistence of the Mayor, and rides off, out of town, not really knowing where they are going, and who they are looking for. In the meantime, the Sheriff’s body is removed to the morgue.

The next day, the cleaning lady goes into the Sheriff’s office, as she usually does, to tidy up. She notices that the Sheriff, as usual, has left his gun-cleaning equipment out again, so as usual, she puts it back in his desk draw. She also notices his revolver, lying under under the desk, and assumes that the Sheriff must have dropped it, when he was shot.

In the meantime, the possie returns empty handed, and the reporter is told that the killer must still be on the loose.

This story is sent to the Editor, who decides that it is so important and dramatic, that it deserves to be the lead story on the front page.

The State Governor, on reading this story, decides to initiate a State-wide manhunt. After all, it is coming up to election time, and he has to be seen to be doing something.

And so it goes on …

Nobody has knowingly lied, in this story; although several people could be charged with incompetence. But that is what happens when folks are put in situations that they have not experienced before.

By reading the story in a linear fashion, you ended up knowing more than any of the actors in the story did. We are wise in hindsight.

Pat, you didn’t get this quite right. The Wikileaks e-mails indict the Democratic National Committee (DNC), not the media. The DNC is the top party organization for the Democratic party and its chairman is Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, a Congresswoman from a district in South Florida. Wasserman-Schultz is an angry, shrill, shrew (think Naomi Oreskes only with a big microphone). The reason this wikileak is so powerful is that in the party’s primary battle between Clinton and Bernie Sanders the DNC is sworn to be neutral among the various candidates. But the DNC staff members were actively trying to help Hillary defeat Bernie. On top of that, the Democratic party sets aside many delegate spots for the political insiders, Congressmen, Senators, State officials, Democrat state governors, etc. These “Superdelegates” are not bound to vote the same way as are the primary election delegates from their home states. So now the Bernie Sanders supporters are far more angry than they were even after Hillary won enough delegates to win the Primary election fight. Think the DNC “cheated” Bernie out of some delegates.

Because of all this, Wasserman-Schultz was openly booed last Friday in her home district in Florida where she introduced Hillary Clinton and Clinton’s new Vice-President choice. Wasserman-Shultz cancelled both of her appearances at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, and moved up her planned retirement as DNC chairman to this Friday, the day after the Convention ends. The Democratic party needs the pro-Sanders voters, but they may choose to stay home on election day, or else cast meaningless votes for one of the minor parties that have zero chance of winning (e.g.Green Party, Socialist Workers Party, or even Trump). Of course, on the right, some voters disaffected by Trump may vote for the Libertarian minor party and likewise take votes away from him.

BTW, during most of his Congressional career, Bernie Sanders was not a registered Democrat, because he considered the Democratic party too far to the right. But he did join the Democratic caucus in the Congress, so his vote in Congress was reliably leftist.

Wiki leaks did leak communications between MSNBC, CNN and the DNC discussing what they wanted reported. So the media has most definitely been caught.
The number on trending topic on Facebook for the last few days has been the movie ‘Clinton Cash.’ This deal with crookedness and corruption of the Clintons.
The latest leak involves exchange of donations for dinner with the president, and for appointments to government positions. So the Democrats and looking very bad right now.

The Left seem to be full on with “the Russians are running everything”.
A prominent Left leaning commentator in NZ was last night on radio raging about how the Russians “own” Trump (they are financing him), they are financing Marie Le Pen, they financed the leave faction on Brexit, they are to blame for all the Middle East issues, they hacked the Democratic Party emails etc.
So it seems the message has gone out from ‘Global Lefty HO’ to make sure everyone goes with the message that the Russians are to blame for all their woes.( Similar to how everyone used the word “dark” to describe Trumps speech)

Xi Jinping and Putin are working closely on the new world order, which you won’t find in the MSM.

In Beijing recently China and Russia ‘advanced 58 projects worth $50 billion. These include a $6.2 billion loan from Beijing to build the 770 km-long high-speed railway between Moscow and Kazan and $12 billion in loans to build an LNG plant in the Russian Arctic.

‘Russian Railways, Russian investment company Sinara Group, China Railway, and Chinese CRRC will also invest in a plant in Russia to build 100 high-speed trains, designed for the Moscow-Kazan high-speed railway. The railway inevitably will be connected to the future, $100 billion, high-speed expansion of the Trans-Siberian between Moscow and Beijing.

‘It goes without saying, this is all part of an essential node of the New Silk Roads. And as if this was not enough, in a further, graphic instance of geoeconomic interpolation, Russia and China’s central banks are setting up a yuan clearing mechanism in Russia.’

Where once you could discern fact from fantasy it’s now all a blur seen through cynical eyes.

    Q: How many

A: Three. One to report it as an inspired
    government program to bring
light to the people, one to report it as a
    diabolical government plot to
deprive the poor of darkness, and one
to win a pulitzer prize for

The phrase is “highly-orchestrated”, rather than co-ordinated. The story-lines, and which media outlets would be publishing what, were decided months ago.

Trump has a vision of the way the world should be. Putin has a vision of the way the world should be. Those visions are not the same. One is of the “right”, and the other is of the “left”. But that matters not. The fact that they both have clear visions of the way the world should be, makes them soulmates in the eyes of the Democrats, who arguably have no vision at all.

Anything to discredit Trump. Goebells will proud of today,s media. When you read his diary there is an intellect and cunning in his propaganda and lots of it was true including his prediction of the iron curtain. At least Goebells broadcasted the Katyn massacre, or Russian atrocities in East Prussia. If it wasn,t for him lots of Soviet crimes would not be known. Not mentioned in this post is the pro global warming bias in the media. Prior to coming to Jo’s site I was reading an AP article about the sighting of a wolverine in California. There were two mentions in the article about how global warming has made life more difficult for wolverines in the Sierra Madre mountains. Total bullocks of course, especially in a supposed factual news story. This goes on everywhere in the media. I recently had a discussion with the editor of my local paper. The guy was totally clueless about the global warming farce. He just accepted the widely publicized mantra. He didn’t show much interest in educating himself either.

Absolutely correct. Newspapers print warmist propaganda almost daily. They publish alarmist letters to the editors at least weekly, but rarely publish skeptical rebuttals to either, or if they do they will bury them in their online opinion blogs so that the public will be unlikely to see them.

TV news often drop in global warming innuendo in unrelated or barely related stories. They conflate weather events with climate all the time. Meanwhile, there is virtually no skeptical coverage at all except for ridicule. If skeptical, or neutral, or luke warm scientists even testify in front of Congress it didn’t happen. Judith Curry and others gets zero main stream news coverage. They are deliberately ignored. When Senator Cruz held hearing on the topic it got no coverage at all, for example. Not even on Fox.

Once in a great while Stuart Varney and a few others may air something containing skeptical viewpoints on the Fox Business Channel.

      60

    • #

This is all based on several papers by McKeveley (hope I spelled that right) and Copeland who have long term studies on wolverines with regards to habitat constraints, behavior etc. Their papers predicting the likely outcome for wolverines given certain climate scenarios are difficult to fault, so long as you accept the range of scenarios they consider.

The thing is though Stan, you are correct that the person quoted was speaking bollocks. The research is modelling the effects on breeding a long way in the future assuming that the climate does certain things in the northern Rockies (where they mostly study) that affect the wolverine’s ability to breed and feed. The observation of a wolverine wandering around in some unexpected place cannot be connected to this research in any way and is pure data free speculation.

The Russians like Trump? They adore Bill and Hillary Clinton, actually, or they should.
In 2013 Canadian Uranium One executives were trying to sell off their US uranium projects to Russian interests. While successfully lobbying the State Department for permission, during Hillary’s tenure as Secretary of State, they donated $US2.35m to the Clinton Foundation, which the Foundation failed to disclose. Bill Clinton also picked up a $US500,000 speaking fee in Moscow – one of his highest – from a Russian investment bank with links to the Kremlin that was promoting Uranium One stock.
The US-approved uranium deal gave the Russians a fifth of US uranium capacity, under their Rosatom masthead. Hillary had earlier pledged to notify Obama about all donors to the Foundation but the uranium-interest donations only came to light through a Reuters reporter’s discovery. The Clintons then had to re-file five years of tax returns on how they were reporting donations.

The United States Federal government allowed the formation of the American Media Oligopoly, in gross violation of existing American anti-trust statutes, on the condition that they function as de facto organs of state propaganda uncritically taking Big Government’s side on any and all issues. That is why the American Media has been so critical regarding the candidacy of Donald J. Trump while giving Hillary Rodham Clinton a free pass on everything, including the commission of multiple Federal felonies in rigging the 2016 Democratic primaries and caucuses in US states and territories to give Hillary Clinton more votes and delegates than US Senator Bernie Sanders. For these reasons a majority of Americans thoroughly despise the media “presstitutes” and their masters.

I am not so sure that this ‘is just another marker showing the average Western citizen is losing faith in the integrity of so many key institutions’. Most of my life people have complained of media bias in one direction or other. Looking back into the nineteenth century, it was taken as read that newspapers would adopt a particular bias.

The real complaint is that media pretends to be unbiased, when it is not so, but, heck, what propagandist really wants to stand up and say ‘Hey, I’m biassed, you really need to access several sources to get the best idea of what is going on’. Not gonna happen.

We do not need to rely on media to be intelligently skeptical for us. That is our job. Skepticism, and lost faith, is a part of what makes the average Western citizen an average Western citizen. And, I think, we love it!

The challenge is when even several sources give you the same spin on events, or just don’t report them. Social media offers a potential alternative, but both Facebook and Twitter have demonstrated the ability to squash stories/threads they don’t like. How do we know what actually is happening in the world around us?

It is a Russian view on subversion. The whole thing is interesting, if long. Starting at 13:15 it details the main targets of subversion. Item 1 is denigrating religion. Whatever you may think about religion it did provide a moral compass. Removing any such direction is required. It covers the media and education as well. The worrying thing is that everything mentioned is happening.

The questions about the media are: who elects them and how do they have so much power. An interesting point is made about the “mediocrity” required for the job.

Two-out-of-three voters (66%) think the news media has too much power and influence over elections.

Now that is something I’ve watched happen. When Arnold Schwarzenegger was not yet a candidate for governor of California the media was able to talk some about the other republican candidate, Tom McClintock. But as soon as Arnie’s name was even tossed around with a serious intent, Arnie was all you heard about. McClintock was buried under a mountain of Schwarzenegger news every single day. So of course Arnie was elected. The voters didn’t want Gray Davis, they wanted a reformer, Arnie talked like a reformer and he was the only one they heard enough about to even notice.

Who was Tom McClintock? A nobody to the average voter in spite of the fact that he would have been a much better governor than Arnie.

No, I’d prefer “None of the above”. Hillary is a compulsive liar, is hideously corrupt and hopelessly compromised. It stands to reason that Britain’s GCHQ has a full set of Hillary’s e-mails. Every competent intelligence agency, including Canada’s, Australia’s and – guess what – those of the United States, knows exactly what was in Hillary’s inbox. The Russians know. The Iranians know. The North Koreans know. The Chinese could probably monitor her actual key-strokes.

Unless Trump surrounds himself with men and women of integrity and virtue, I can’t see what difference this forthcoming election will make. Clinton, Rodham, whatever she calls herself this week, could not be a worse candidate, but that doesn’t make Trump a more suitable one.

I’m all in favour of a binary system in a referendum, but a permanently binary system for electing the head of state is, in scientific parlance, completely bonkers.

One of the most recent and best examples of how the MSM shamelessly broadcasts political spin was the PM Gillard charges of Tony Abbott being a misogynist, a charge that was to any thinking person completely false, baseless.

The same spin was used in the UK against David Cameron when he was leader of the opposition, the creator of the spin was Labor Spin Doctor John McTiernan who was later brought to Australia on a 457 work Visa and worked for Labor here. He wrote the speech that Gillard delivered in the Parliament and they rehearsed it together, a man created the misogynist tactic for that woman and many of her admirers applauded her intestinal fortitude in speaking out against her political enemy, a man.

Sadly many women were impressed and believed every word, Gillard was even hailed as a role model for young women.

And the media went along with the character assassination of a decent family man.

ABC radio conveyed NOTHING of the turmoil at the DNC this morning:

26 Jul: ABC: US election: Democratic Party struggles to present unified front on first day of convention
By North America correspondent Stephanie March
Posted about an hour ago Updated 37 minutes ago
As the convention got underway, the Democratic National Committee offered a “sincere apology” to Senator Sanders and his supporters for “inexcusable remarks” in emails.
That failed to quell the disquiet in the arena, with many of Senator Sanders delegates “booing” when speakers refereed to Hillary Clinton.
“The exact configuration of the protests are unclear but it is evident that a substantial majority of the polled survey delegates support participating,” Norman Solomon from the Bernie Delegates Network, a group representing two-thirds of Bernie Sanders’ almost 2000 delegates, said…
This week could be ugly for the Democratic Party as it tries to present a stable and unified ticket in the face of the unpredictability of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump…
Life-long Democrat and Sanders delegate Manuel Zapata believes whatever damage has been done can be fixed.
“I think there is something cool about living in a haunted house and I will stay here until we fix it,” Mr Zapata said…
    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-07-26/us-election-democratic-party-struggles-to-present-unified-front/7660194

3 little words about Clinton you missed, ABC:

Democratic Convention Opens on an Ugly Note
    TIME – ‎41 minutes ago‎
Some delegates borrowed a chant from last week’s Republican convention in Cleveland, shouting, “Lock her up!”

Guardian: ‘Lock her up’: Sanders supporters adopt Trump’s attack line on Clinton

WSJ: Bernie Sanders Supporters Chant ‘Lock Her Up’ in Philadelphia

Buzzfeed: “Lock Her Up” Not A “Consensus Sentiment,” Clinton Camp Says After Bernie Voters Take Up GOP Chant

NY Post: Even Bernie Sanders supporters want Hillary Clinton behind bars

25 Jul: CNN: Jennifer Agiesta: Donald Trump bounces into the lead
Donald Trump comes out of his convention ahead of Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House, topping her 44% to 39% in a four-way matchup including Gary Johnson (9%) and Jill Stein (3%) and by three points in a two-way head-to-head, 48% to 45%. That latter finding represents a 6-point convention bounce for Trump, which are traditionally measured in two-way matchups…

ABC missed quite a bit more:

26 Jul: 9News: No we can’t: Hard-core Sanders fans reject Clinton
Some let it be known that they would prefer anyone — even Trump — as president rather than see Clinton gain the White House.
“The system, as Trump says, is rigged,” said Shana Lin, a housewife from Virginia Beach who held a sign that read “You lost me at Hillary” as fellow “Berners” flooded the streets in the shadow of City Hall.
“Actually, at this point, I think Trump is a marginal step up, because (Clinton) has proven to lie to the American people over and over,” she added.
“She lies, she’s a warmonger, she’s divisive. She is only out for herself.”
Several thousand protesters, many of them ardent Sanders backers, held demonstrations in Philadelphia far larger than any seen in Cleveland during the Republican convention…
But despite their candidate now backing Clinton, many say they will not hold their nose and pull the lever in November for someone they loathe…
“I’m not scared of Trump, period,” Duffy insisted. “I’m more scared of her,” she said of Clinton…

appropriately posted on WaPo’s “THE FIX” page. Bump works his magic on some dubious stats:

25 Jul: WaPo The Fix: 90 percent of unwavering Sanders supporters plan to vote for Clinton in November
    By Philip Bump
Among the weird scenes from the first day of the Democratic convention in Philadelphia is this one. A truck sponsored by the conspiracy-theory site Infowars toting a billboard reading “Hillary for Prison 2016” rolled up to some pro-Bernie Sanders protesters. Infowars doesn’t fit neatly onto the political spectrum, but it’s by no means liberal. The Sanders supporters, though, liked what they saw…
So why so much outrage in Philadelphia? Delegates to party conventions are not normal members of political parties…
Pew did find that more-liberal Democrats — like those who backed Sanders in the primaries — felt more coldly to Republicans than more moderate ones. This makes sense…
There are plenty of Bernie Sanders supporters who are frustrated at Hillary Clinton, and some chunk of those voters will back Donald Trump in November. Most Democrats — even those who consistently supported Bernie Sanders in the primary — plan to back Hillary Clinton. Those Democrats are more likely to be moderate and, Pew’s data suggests, more willing to accept compromise.
That, it seems clear, isn’t the sort of person who would applaud a “Hillary Clinton for Prison” billboard…

All too often the media is lead to the track of a story but like blinkered mules they do not move their gaze from the indicated route.

So very much like ‘climate scientist™’ and CO2.
Surely if any one gas in our atmosphere varies then it’s reasonable to assume that all gases in the atmosphere vary. Or is oxygen, ozone, nitrogen, water, etc., at a static amount? When will ‘climate scientist™’ get off their complacency and show us how the whole atmosphere has varied over time (since the last ice age?).

***Guardian attempts to blame Infowars (without naming them!) for the chants of “Lock her up”:

26 Jul: Guardian: ‘Lock her up’: Sanders supporters adopt Trump’s attack line on Clinton
by Adam Gabbatt and Dan Roberts in Philadelphia
“I feel like I’ve been cheated, I feel like my brothers and sisters have been cheated, and I feel like it’s all her fault,” Minter said.
He said he was dissatisfied with “all the classified emails she’s let out using her own servers and using her own personal email and then you have the WikiLeaks, all the going behind people’s backs”…
Minter said he was not concerned at using an attack line associated with Trump and his supporters.
“It’s been something that Trump’s been saying for a while but I honestly believe she should be indicted.”
***Some supporters told the Guardian that the chant was not entirely spontaneous.
“Well, really it’s because a big truck with the sign ‘lock her up’ passed by,” said Sarah Hernandez, a 22-year-old chief marketing officer from Houston.
Minter, who had travelled with Hernandez to Philadelphia, pointed out that the truck actually had the message: “Hillary for prison.”
“Yes. It said: ‘Hillary for prison 2016’,” she said. “And someone started chanting: ‘Lock her up, lock her up’, and we all joined in.”
“Hillary for prison 2016” is a common message seen on pins and T-shirts at Republican rallies.
Tim Turner, 53, had travelled to Philadelphia from Indianapolis, Indiana. He had also noted the truck’s presence and was among those chanting.
“We just know that she’s not very honest,” he said.
“You know, I’ve never caught her in a criminal act. But I think she’s dirty.”…
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/jul/25/lock-her-up-sanders-trump-clinton-chant

nice bit of cherry-picking, Guardian. however, we already know from Time Magazine that delegates inside the hall were chanting “Lock her up”…and they weren’t influenced by the Infowars’ truck:

25 Jul: Time: Democratic Convention Opens on an Ugly Note
From the opening prayer, in which Rev. Dr. Cynthia Hale invoked Clinton’s name, almost every reference of the presumptive Democratic nominee’s drew boos from hundreds of vocal Sanders delegates and supporters.

    party unity:

25 Jul: WaPo: A day of humiliation for party chair underscores Democratic divide
By Robert Costa, Philip Rucker and Ed O’Keefe
What was supposed to be a morning of personal triumph for Debbie Wasserman Schultz — rallying her home-state delegation before opening the Democratic National Convention she had orchestrated — suddenly became one of humiliation.
“Shame!” people in the room jeered as the congresswoman addressed a Monday breakfast of the Florida delegation. “Shame!”
It was a cringe-worthy, nationally televised spectacle that exposed deep divisions within the Democratic Party and reopened raw wounds from the Hillary Clinton-Bernie Sanders primary battles. By the afternoon, Wasserman Schultz had disappeared here in Philadelphia, after also giving up her speaking slot and her ceremonial role gaveling the convention to order…
The party’s turmoil drove conversation in Philadelphia’s sweltering streets Monday, with elected officials and delegates agitated and alarmed that it was overshadowing the convention’s kickoff…
The DNC has begun an investigation of internal emails following the compromise of its network by hackers, and party officials braced for thousands more potentially embarrassing messages to surface in the coming days or weeks…
Many senior Democrats said additional firings may be necessary…
Even as the senator from Vermont urged his followers to unify behind Clinton, they displayed remarkable dissent all afternoon, and the convention was awash in anti-Clinton and anti-trade chants…
Complicating the party establishment’s push to bind together their ranks Monday were fuming donors who, while mostly aligned with Clinton and the DNC, felt themselves dragged into a spotlight they did not seek. Many were upset that their exchanges with party leaders were leaked — and by the way staffers belittled and mocked them in private correspondence…

On Wednesday, she attended two $100,000-a-head events in Englewood, N.J., and New York City…
Maureen White and Steven Rattner, two prominent Democratic fundraisers, hosted one of the Thursday fundraisers at their home in Manhattan. Mr. Rattner also was a prominent businessman and served in the Obama administration. The second Thursday event was at the home of Lynn Forester de Rothschild, a prominent New York businesswoman and supporter of Mrs. Clinton and Democratic candidates. On Wednesday, architect Jon Stryker and hedge fund manager Orin Kramer played host.
Six-figure fundraisers are a new frontier in presidential politics, made possible by a 2014 Supreme Court case that tossed a key contribution limit governing how much donors could give across the board in a single election cycle. As a result, campaigns and parties can now fundraise in tandem with each other…
In April, the campaign held an event at the home of actor George Clooney. The event cost $33,400 to attend, though donors who contributed $353,400 could sit at the head table with Mr. Clooney.
