Big Bureaucrats fired scientist who spoke too honestly to congress

Just another way Government strangles science:

Apparently a good scientist is not supposed to answer all of the questions from congress. In late 2014,Dr Noelle Metting was the only scientist DOE provided to help congress figure out what mattered,  but DOE management had already told Dr Noelle Metting not to answer queries outside of a certain zone they marked out. Alas, she was too helpful to congress though, and got the sack within a month. According to the report, emails within DOE reveal that her sacking was retaliatory, and the reason for her “removal from federal service was her failure to confine the discussion at the briefing to pre-approved talking points.”

This information comes from a congressional investigation chaired by Lamar Smith. (Rep)

Message to scientists — obey the bureaucrat masters, not the elected ones.

By censoring information to congress, the DOE was doing a form of lobbying. Her testimony related to low dose radiation and risks of exposure during terrorist attacks. DOE allegedly wanted to kill off this line of research so they could do more climate research instead. Just out to save the world but kill democracy.

Congress: Obama Admin
Fired Top Scientist to Advance Climate Change Plans

The report additionally discovered efforts by the Obama administration to censor the information given to Congress, interfering with the body’s ability to perform critical oversight work.

“Instead of providing the type of scientific information needed by Congress to legislate effectively, senior departmental officials sought to hide information, lobbied against legislation, and retaliated against a scientist for being forthcoming,” Smith said in a statement. “In this staff report based on lengthy record before the committee, much has been revealed about how senior level agency officials under the Obama administration retaliated against a scientist who did not follow the party line.”

During an October 2014 briefing with senior DoE staff on the matter, lawmakers heard testimony from Dr. Noelle Metting, the radiation research program’s manager.

Less than a month later, lawmakers discovered that Obama administration officials had “removed Dr. Metting from federal service for allegedly providing too much information in response to questions posed by” Congress during the briefing, the report states.

Sometimes it’s the politicians doing the scientific strangling. But this time, it’s the bureaucrats with the choke hold.

UPDATE: Peter C comments that this may be driven more by anti-nuclear desires than by pro-carbon-fears. The low dose radiation studies suggest that low levels of radiation are not so bad, or may even be beneficial which undermines the Anti-nuc excuse that “there is no safe level of radiation”.

In molecular biology we learnt that our nuclear DNA (which is most of our genes), there is a sophisticated repair system which, of course, uses the back up copy of our DNA that we all have to detect errors and repair damage. Our mitochondrial DNA doesn’t have this: that’s the remnant loop of ancient bacterial DNA which only has a few genes, but is copied 1-2000 times in each of our cells.  But most of what we call our DNA has a good repair system that can fix single strand errors. It’s the double strand mistakes that cause irreparable damage.

UPDATE#2: Rud Istvan comments that she has been reinstated. See more at #14.

The low dose radiation research program was coming up with more and more information that undermined the “Linear Dose Response with No Threshold” model which has been used since the 1950s to inform policy on radiation risks and mitigation. Even back then the International Commission on Radiation Protection thought that model might not be correct but they adopted it because, on the available evidence it would Not Underestimate the risk of harm.

Anti Nuclear advocates love the Linear No Threshold model because they can claim that there is no safe level of radiation exposure and from there they can spin the anxiety about the harmful effects.

More realistic assessments greatly diminish the problems of low dose radiation exposure. Even nuclear power station accidents become fairly insignificant once the immediate high dose exposure is contained. A great deal of harm has been done to people by these Anti Nuclear advocates.
The DOE is supposed to support the nuclear industry in the USA but it seems that they would rather regulate it out of existence.

Isn’t it just a case of power corrupts and more power corrupts further. In the Australian Senate inquiries the questions fielded to the bureaucrats are not very demanding. I am waiting to see if Dr. Roberts of Ms. Hanson’s group asks some difficult questions on climate change in the Senate. e.g. “is carbon (not CO2) a pollutant that the establishment seems to believe in”

Incidents like this highlight the issue there is no difference between bureaucrats appointed or elected, instead of elected/unelected dullards complaining a competent person allegedly provided too much information in response to questions posed by Congress, how about the people complain there is too little information and way too much government to effectively answer questions that are supposed to asked for their benefit.

Dr. Ernest Moniz is the US Secretary of Energy. He has a PhD in theoretical physics, and was at MIT prior to his station at the DoE. Dr. Moniz oversaw the nuclear treaty with Iran and so is unlikely to be ignorant of radiation safety.

One very much doubts that Dr Noelle Metting could have been reprimanded or dismissed without Dr. Moniz knowing and approving of it.

That being true, we have the vision of a prominent scientist obstructing transmission of valid and relevant scientific knowledge. One is left wondering what level of principled offense would cause him to resign in protest.

Having worked in some very beaurocratic organisations for many years, this is not unusual. It happens here in Australia as it does everywhere. When vested interests are at stake, what’s not said is usually more important than what is said.

    First, the bad news.

Question: Is there a limit to the evil Obama and his administration are trying to impose on this world?

    Answer: No!

    Now the good news.

Less than three weeks to go.

As one ex-PM of Britain (Harold Wilson) once said, “A week is a long time in politics.” We still have three of them to go, and Obama is going full-out on a scorched-earth policy – how much damage will he do before Trump gets in to control the fires?

About a year ago, n the Bishop Hill site, a thread was raised for predictions for 2016. I jokingly predicted that Obama will create such an “emergency” that elections will be cancelled, and he is made President For Life. It alarms me that I may not have been as far out as I first thought.

And some say (David Appell of it was he) that Trump could not remove Gavin…
So Mr. Appell what is good for the goose is good for the gander, that is if Mr. Trump has no morals, and plays by the lefty democrat playbook of authoritarian rule with threats, gagging orders, dismissals, cover-ups etc…

I think that Trump won’t need to do anything himself, he has appointed the type of people necessary to sort things out and who won’t be stopped by bureaucratic obstruction.
Gavin ‘shot himself in the foot’ saying that he wouldn’t work under Trump. Perhaps he can migrate to Canada. As for those in the DOE they will be given a choice of doing their job or finding another, not on the government payroll. It is already obvious that under Trump money for AGW propaganda will be very small. This will affect universities as well. Claims that they have tenure or can’t be dismissed will be futile after the previous actions when the Green Blog was riding high. And a further incentive for the new Administration is that billions of dollars will be available for their plans.

Those prominent AGW types will find the old curse “May you live in interesting times, and may you come to the attention of the authorities” no consolation at all.

A large company in the 1940′-1050’s or so, in the US had a good means of getting rid of deadwood and disloyal sneaks and crooks. Every few years the company would announce the formation/acquisition of a new division with a great sounding name and mission.
Next they would entice or transfer the bone heads to this new division and then business as usual for a while. Then Pow! the division would be abolished along with all the deadwood, crooks, cheats, and disloyal people working against the company and its stockholders best interest. Smooth sailing until the next new division…

There are the political tyrants, advocating ruinous “climate policy”, and then there are the scientific incompetents, like David Appell and ScienceofDoom, who pretend to be experts but are really just shills for the tyrants. They should all be drummed out of any position having to do with promulgating to the general populace what “science” should be believed.

“Political Change Does Not Affect the Underlying Scientific Incompetence”

The scientific incompetence is the real carrier of the disease of climate alarmism, and can keep it going into the next see-saw political change, where tyranny erupts again and the populace again shows itself all too willing to agree with it.

Only the truth will set us free.

In my professional life I worked on a number of “projects.” Each project was headed by a “Program Manager” and several sub-managers–one for system engineering, hardware, software, and administration. On occasion I was the System Engineer. Problems often arose that had to be addressed. An issue that surfaced with many problems was the degree to which the customer (i.e., government entity funding the project) should be made aware of the problem. The best project manager I ever had had a simple, and in my opinion, the perfect answer. He told us: “You can tell the customer anything you can substantiate. The only thing I require is that you tell me first so that I am not blindsided by the issue.”

His management style worked. The customer was confident he/she would not be faced with a crises near project completion. Furthermore, by keeping the customer in the loop, the customer could often help solve the problem–not with technical advice, but with possible schedule and funding changes. Unlike that abomination Obama, it was a pleasure to work for this project manager.

My first boss, when I started work as a junior, straight from school – put it even more succinctly “If I don’t get a kick in the arse, neither will you”! Being given such autonomy at an early age led to a “can do” attitude and a desire to follow a job through to the end regardless of time put in.

A principle I carried with me through my management career.

That, and an “open door” policy served me well with the majority of staff, but there are always the odd irredeemable characters who use it to take advantage fortunately there were very few of those.

The Siberian Times quotes Dr Derevyanko, who wrote in the Russian magazine, Science First Hand, that when they studied the diameters of the bracelet, they found that the rotational speed of the drill must have been quite high, and with minimal fluctuations.

“The ancient master” he said, “was skilled in techniques previously considered not characteristic for the Palaeolithic era, such as easel speed drilling, boring tool type rasp, grinding and polishing with a leather and skins of varying degrees of tanning.””

In Australia I was stunned to learn that the socialist Union for Journalists controls who gets into the press gallery – Should not the government control that, via some sort of lottery perhaps? This is why the Press Gallery in Australia remains so left leaning.

A government controlled press gallery is perhaps at odds with the desire to be seen by the rest of the world as a free, open, and democratic country?

In this era of increased security, then I understand that a standard verification process is a practical thing to have, but I agree, the current system is clearly not conducive to objective reporting, nor is it conducive to a truly diverse range of politics-based opinion pieces.

Providing some separation is maintained and the system is transparent I don’t see why access to the press gallery for say a 3 year term aught not be via a “Public Lottery” system administered by the public service and “overseen” by the Union. The problem goes deeper than the Canberra Press Gallery.

‘A survey of over 600 Australian journalists, conducted by a senior academic from the University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, has cast a revealing light on the political beliefs of Australian journalists.

‘It shows that over 40 per cent of ABC journalists support the Greens, over 30 per cent support Labor, and just 15 per cent support the Coalition.’

        News Weekly 2013

        ———

The latest Essential Report suggests 40% of Australians think 2017 will be a bad year for the planet, while only 14% think it’ll be a good year, so I blame the pseudo Marxist media for this skewing of reality.

For democracy to operate efficiently it needs a balanced media.

Her testimony related to low dose radiation and risks of exposure during terrorist attacks. DOE allegedly wanted to kill off this line of research so they could do more climate research instead.

Maybe they did want to do more climate research with the available funds. However this seems more of an excuse to me.

I spoke to my doctor once about this – he explained to me that as your radiation dose increases the bodies immune system raises the necessary defences to minimize and repair the damage, that is our immune system can be primed against radiation as well as diseases. This (according to him) results in lower cancer rates in subjects that are subject to regular low doses of radiation (such as radiologists). For example the low dose contamination around Fukishima may prove to be cancer protective on the whole.

Like a lot of other things human herd immunity to radiation is falling because we reduce our exposure over what we would have received 100 years ago. This is another very good reason that we should not immunise babies and minimise disinfectant use around them until they reach 2 years old. We are failing to teach their immune systems properly.

        Environment Skeptic

What is actually missing from the “low dose” debate is actually blindingly apparent when seen.

Homogeneous radiation is usually from an external source of radiation. External to the body or when it is equally distributed around the body like a radioactive dye that is injected prior to a bone scan for instance, or the radiation for the radioactive Potassium isotope found in bananas and there are others. The thing is that the dose is evenly distributed and homogeneous. The dose of radiation from a medical X ray is also relatively homogeneous, and natural radiation in the environment, from outer space and so on.

These homogeneous radiation doses are the subject matter of well over 90% of radiation dose information that i have seen. The question of toxicity of some radioactive isotopes like depleted uranium for example in its soluble form is not often discussed either. or the toxic process of enrichment and the chemicals that are used.

It is difficult to find information on radiation doses from a ‘point source’ though here is one of the rare ones..

Where it gets interesting is when a radioactive particle (A point source of radiation) is inhaled or ingested, like depleted uranium oxide that is created during the impact of DU munitions that leave a plume of radioactive dust/particles that are each an individual ‘point source’ of radiation.
        https://www.nde-ed.org/GeneralResources/Formula/RTFormula/InverseSquare/InverseSquareLaw.htm

If the particle is inhaled, the cells that are the closest to the inhaled particle will get a higher radiation dose than the cells of the body receiving a lower dose that are far away from the inhaled particle. The dose of radiation received by cells close to the particle or further away from the particle can be calculated according to Newtons Inverse Square law.

What i am saying is that this aspect of radiation dosimetry is quite hard to find information on….For example, if a dirty bomb or depleted uranium ordinance or a nuclear power station ‘spent fuel pool’ goes up in smoke, breathing in particles from the explosion will render the lungs more radioactive than the rest of the body and further……the cells that are closest to the particles will get a higher dose compared to the cells in the lungs that are not in close proximity to the radioactive dust particles. This is my understanding and not really up to date or expert in any way at all. I am not writing a paper on the subject, just a collection of ideas i became aware of when i was studying the general subject after the Fukushima aftermath when the fallout was primarily cesium which behaves like potassium in the body and in soluble form gradually is expelled like potassium which it mimics in the body when ingested.

This also a good read concerning the taboo subject of Depleted Uranium weapons….

Gulf War Veterans and Depleted Uranium
        http://www.ccnr.org/du_hague.html

        Wikipedia:
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depleted_uranium#Safety_and_environmental_issues
        “Safety and environmental issues

About 95% of the depleted uranium produced until now is stored as uranium hexafluoride, (D)UF6, in steel cylinders in open air yards close to enrichment plants. Each cylinder contains up to 12.7 tonnes (or 14 US tons) of UF6. In the U.S. alone, 560,000 tonnes of depleted UF6 had accumulated by 1993. In 2005, 686,500 tonnes in 57,122 storage cylinders were located near Portsmouth, Ohio, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and Paducah, Kentucky.[160][161] The long-term storage of DUF6 presents environmental, health, and safety risks because of its chemical instability. When UF6 is exposed to moist air, it reacts with the water in the air and produces UO2F2 (uranyl fluoride) and HF (hydrogen fluoride), both of which are highly soluble and toxic. Storage cylinders must be regularly inspected for signs of corrosion and leaks. The estimated lifetime of the steel cylinders is measured in decades.[162]

There have been several accidents involving uranium hexafluoride in the United States.[163] The vulnerability of DUF6 storage cylinders to terrorist attack is apparently not the subject of public reports. However, the U.S. government has been converting DUF6 to solid uranium oxides for disposal.[164] Disposing of the whole DUF6 inventory could cost anywhere from 15 to 450 million dollars.[165]”

I continue to remain skeptical that a holistic and all encompassing approach to protecting the environment is being obtained by focusing on global warming.

part of the RealClear website, which includes RealClearPolitics…read all:

31 Dec: RealClearInvestigations: James Varney: Skeptical Climate Scientists Coming In From the Cold
“Here’s to hoping the Age of Trump will herald the demise of climate change dogma, and acceptance of a broader range of perspectives in climate science and our policy options,” Georgia Tech scientist Judith Curry wrote this month at her popular Climate Etc. blog.
William Happer, professor emeritus of physics at Princeton University and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, is similarly optimistic. “I think we’re making progress,” Happer said. “I see reassuring signs.”…
Nevertheless, new organizations like the CO2 Coalition, founded in 2015, suggest the debate is more evenly matched intellectually than is commonly portrayed. In addition to Happer, the CO2 Coalition’s initial members include scholars with ties to world-class institutions like MIT, Harvard and Rockefeller University. The coalition also features members of the American Geophysical Union and the American Meteorology Society, along with policy experts from the Manhattan Institute, the George C. Marshall Institute and Tufts University’s Fletcher School.
With such voices joining in, the debate over global warming might shift. Until now, it’s normally portrayed as enlightened scholars vs. anti-science simpletons…

Richard Lindzen, the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology at MIT and a member of the National Academy of Sciences who has long questioned climate change orthodoxy, is skeptical that a sunnier outlook is upon us.
“I actually doubt that,” he said. Even if some of the roughly $2.5 billion in taxpayer dollars currently spent on climate research across 13 different federal agencies now shifts to scientists less invested in the calamitous narrative, Lindzen believes groupthink has so corrupted the field that funding should be sharply curtailed rather than redirected.
“They should probably cut the funding by 80 to 90 percent until the field cleans up,” he said. “Climate science has been set back two generations, and they have destroyed its intellectual foundations.”…
“Remember this was a tiny field, a backwater, and then suddenly you increased the funding to billions and everyone got into it,” Lindzen said. “Even in 1990 no one at MIT called themselves a ‘climate scientist,’ and then all of a sudden everyone was. They only entered it because of the bucks; they realized it was a gravy train. You have to get it back to the people who only care about the science.”

Off topic but I think the denizens here will get quite a good chuckle plus a lot of guffawing at just another blatant bit of the usual CAGW/ Climate Change stupidity allied with unbelievable ignorance that is currently being exhibited by the Great Prophet of the upcoming Climatic Götterdämmerung, Al Gore himself.

From WUWT; Al Gore’s “Climate Reality Project” is as usual trying every propaganda trick in the book and quite a lot that are outside of the book to extract more money from the naive and ignorant climate change ignorants and believers so as to swell Gore’s already well filled treasure house even further.

The usual trick of using a photoshopped pic of the Deadly Black Polluting Smoke and Fossil Fuel Emissions from the smoke stacks of an industrial complex are highlighted in Gore’s usual propaganda pics that are an integral part of all such Climate Change pleading.

The hilarious part of Gore’s carefully photoshopped smoke stack emissions as shown on WUWT is that the “Deadly Polluting Emissions and Smoke” are just water vapour being emitted from the cooling towers of a nuclear power plant

Which as we can all recognise from the evidence we have seen here, puts Gore’s credibility and capacity for expressing some or even any remote semblance of truth whatsoever down along side of Frank’s and Harry Twinotter’s level of intellectual comprehension.

ROM, I just spent a little time on that – the cooling towers are from a coal fired plant, you can tell because of the conveyor to the right of the Front tower Nuclear plants don’t need conveyors. This doesn’t make it less deceptive though. There is no doubt that the Picture is of backlit water vapor, there isn’t even a smokestack in the image.

bobl, they are different photos both photoshopped of the same cooling towers taken from a slightly different angle on a different days which can be ascertained by the changes in the cloud formations and the sun setting in a different arc in the two photos, the WUWT photo and the Getty photo.

But I believe after looking particularly at the two prominent HV transmission towers in the far background of both photos and the domes in the background of the Getty stock photo which are typical of the nuclear containment domes over power reactors, that the photos are both of the same set of nuclear power plant cooling towers .

In the end though as you say, the whole deal is very deceptive indeed and in a corporation context as a selling point would be classed as f________ulent in the eyes of a corporation’s controlling governmental organisation and grossly misleading to stockholders.

Thank Julian for that thoughtfully worded comment, unfortunately you are on the wrong side of history.

The Trump Effect will have a universal impact on climate change science, its about to be gutted and your qualifications maybe worthless.

MIT Climate Scientist Dr. Richard Lindzen urges Trump: “Cut the funding of climate science by 80% to 90% until the field cleans up’

“Climate science has been set back two generations, and they have destroyed its intellectual foundations. Groupthink has so corrupted the field that funding should be sharply curtailed rather than redirected.’

We’re all qualified `Climate Reality Leaders
              We all know:
              — There is a climate.
              — It’s about 4 giga-years old. (+/- 500 Mega Years ..)
              — It changes all the time.

We passed a tipping point about 3000 years ago. From the start of the Holocene Interstadial, (like, the fine warm climate we currently have with not a lot of ice) until the end of the Minoan Warming, which was about three degrees C warmer than it is now, there was a steady background trend, beneath all the warming/cooling up and down noise, of cooling at 0.05 degrees C per millenium. Since the end of the Minoan Warming, it’s been 0.5 degrees C per millenium. Sorry, warming is over, cooling is definitely in, and ice is on it’s way.

              There, that’s the reality.

“Phrenology was a science of character divination, faculty psychology, theory of brain and what the 19th-century phrenologists called “the only true science of mind.””

So while now thought of as the study of the cranium….

…it is really about how the cranium affects the mind.

                31

              • #
                Environment Skeptic

It was during the study of the bone structure of the cranium in that branch of true science called Craniometry that their true science was hijacked by Phrenologists who manufactured character divination and profuse theories of the brain.

It was later found that the mind affects the cranium or the bone structure around it. For example, great thinkers scratch their heads a lot. The mind merely protects itself by increasing the size of the cranium in general or over specific areas of the mind over time. A simple cause and effect.

Craniometry is measurement of the cranium (the main part of the skull), usually the human cranium. It is a subset of cephalometry, measurement of the head, which in humans is a subset of anthropometry, measurement of the human body. It is distinct from phrenology, the pseudoscience that tried to link personality and character to head shape, and physiognomy, which tried the same for facial features. However, these fields have all claimed the ability to predict traits or intelligence.

But of course in those 3 days you learn nothing about how a loop gain of 0.95 in the climate is impossible, or how it is not possible for a scalar (DC) analysis to tell anything about the behaviour of a system in the presence of delayed feedback, or how GCM driven models consistently produce results that do not conserve energy, or even the stupidity of the assertion that the earth can dissipate over 1000 Watts per square meter but somehow can’t manage 1000.6 Watts per square meter without catastrophic warming.

I bet they don’t explain that grid scale solar doesn’t ever pay back the CO2 that goes into it’s construction, or that solar as a grid supply (99.5% availability) tops out at round 3 Watts per square metre or maybe 6 Watts for Solar Thermal. That it requires a land area 6 times that of Singapore to power Singapore with PV Solar, that the average output of the largest solar plant in the world Ivanpah – 16 square km of environmental DEVASTATION is only equivalent to just half the output of just ONE 777 engine. He probably fails to note that Wind power has even worse grid equivalent power output with zero watts guaranteed output at 99.5% availability – even with storage and also is incapable of saving any CO2 over it’s lifetime, and requires at least 40 HUGE wind turbines to replace just one 777 engine or 80 of them to replace the power capacity of just one 777 Jet (with two engines).

Al Gore probably even omits to tell you that bringing forward emission to provide fuel to build Solar and Wind installations to replace perfectly serviceable fossil fuel power stations, further deteriorates the climate earlier making them much worse than coal power (Assuming we actually believe that CO2 is a bad thing!))

He probably fails to mention that the 2PPM increase in CO2 per annum is sustaining a 1% per annum yield increase in crops that currently is sustaining the 1% increase in population per annum and that a significant fall in CO2 say to the 350PPM of 350.org would precipitate a famine of epic proportions (due to the loss of 26% of food yield).

These are the things Al Gore conveniently omits from your “education”. Stop repeating propaganda and learn to do the math YOURSELF.

That is an hypothesis, not a theory. If you had even half a brain cell, you would have known that it hasn’t been tested yet, so it is neither proven nor disproven. It will be being meastured over the next few years.

Conservation of energy In 1842, Julius Robert Mayer discovered the Law of Conservation of Energy. In its most compact form, it it now called the First Law of Thermodynamics: energy is neither created nor destroyed.

But it does not explain how energy can increase in this closed loop system to the point of cataclysmic reaction before balancing out.

                RAH at 13.2.8.1.1:

Yup. It works out that for each unit of tropospheric atmosphere (at 10,404 molecules of gas per unit) there are just 4 molecules of CO2, given a concentration of 400ppm and it’s well mixed. That’s just one molecule per unit more than the late nineteenth century when it was about 300ppm, or just 3 molecules of CO2 per unit.

That’s just so scary given the feed forward (down-welling) magic that that gas gets up to. And it’s such a serious situation, (oh s**te, I can’t stop laughing, it’s a classic case of cultism and a lamb to the slaughter …) that CO2 has risen by 1 molecule per 10,000 (approx) over 150 years.

And that’s the problem: they effectively believe in magic. (They call it “science.”)

If you are talking about water vapour feedback, the feedback effect is trivial to explain.

A warmer atmosphere holds more water vapour. Water vapour is a greenhouse gas therefore the greenhouse effect increases.

Refer to Total Column Water Vapour.

                Hmm,
You’d think right!. Except that WV Feedback is logarithmic, (and is treated in models as linear) and it is a condensing gas, which means it can transport scads of energy from the surface to the emission layer. The Difference between the moist adiabatic lapse rate and the dry adiabatic lapse rate is negative (Moist is less than dry) meaning that WV LOWERS surface temperature.

So WV is in general a NEGATIVE FEEDBACK to temperature

I noted a couple of items when Julian Feltcher made his appearance in post #13.2 .

As a qualified Climate Reality Leader

Now it is extremely unusual and in fact I can’t remember any similar incident or announcement by a brand new rookie poster here on Jo’s blog or anywhere else where a newbie or as we might say around here, a juvenile sprog who barely knows his beak from his rear orifice, to a site announces in his first five words what his claimed and supposed qualifications are reputed to be and that without providing ANY background or backing whatsoever to back those supposed and probably quite spurious claimed qualifications.

The message delivered by Julian Feltcher in making that opening five word statement about his so called qualifications is that everything he has to say from then on or is about to say is based entirely on “Authority” his “authority” in this case as is always the case with hard line way out in the mind field, cults of every description and type.

And therefore we can take it that anything he might promulgate or claim will in all likelihood bears no relationship to any form of science of any type at any level at all.
          .
The second item that struck me is his comment in post #13.2.8.1

Al Gore recalled if the earth was seen as a sphere a yard in diameter with a coat of varnish on it, that coat of varnish would represent our atmosphere,

Now as a country guy I have stood out innumerable times in the darkness of the country night and marvelled at the true immensity of space and the stars and galaxies in their multi billions across the whole of utter immensity of the cosmos.
And I have marvelled how we,despite everything we might believe about our own powers do not rate at any level within that Cosmos that far surpasses human comprehension or imagination.
I have soared a glider to over 23,000 feet and in the deepest cold and near silence of the great Mountain waves that carried my glider and myself up there.

And I have marvelled at the colossal forces in the air around me and that exist around this planet and the immensity and power of those forces which I have sat at the calculator on many a night to try and comprehend the millions of tonnes of air in just one of those thermal columns that have lifted my glider and myself up and enabled me to fly for hundreds of kilometres just using this immense thermal columns of air.

I see a world around me and a Cosmos that world exists in and is controlled and influenced by is truly immense and far beyond our understanding from every angle.
          .

Meanwhile Al Gore and his deferential acolyte, his Qualified Climate Reality Leader aka Julian Felcher look at and think about a sphere a yard in diameter with a thin coat of varnish covering that sphere.
That is their world, a tiny yard in diameter sphere with a coating of varnish over it.

Their tiny, limited minds that are almost totally fixated and completely limited to that tiny yard in diameter world with a coat of common varnish coating it which is all their minds can comprehend

Can anybody who professes to care about the world, who professes to understand the forces that are part of this world we live on, who wants to change the world we live on to one made in his own image really have such tiny slime cell level degree of comprehension of our world, our planet and the immensity of the forces which exist on our world , colossal forces that from far out in the solar system, the galaxy and the cosmos are exerting tremendous forces far beyond our understanding perhaps forever.

And an increase of third by volume over a period of some 70 years in a gas that accounts for four parts in every ten thousand parts of the volume of our atmosphere or is the same percentage of the volume of the global atmosphere as 4 mms is in a distance of 10 metres i.e.; 10,000 mms is supposedly going to destroy our world if we believe the climate catastrophe cultists and their Climate Reality Leaders with their totally spurious, pseudo , three day course climate science qualifications.

A pretty low altitude by NZ gliding mountain wave standards, Rereke.
But it was only the second deliberate mountain wave flight in a glider here in Australia in late 1968 and was in mountain wave off our Grampians mountain range about 30 kms SE of our Horsham airfield.
The Grampians would barely rate as foothills in NZ.

The glider was an all wood Australian designed and Adelaide built ES60 Boomerang Glider [ Harry Schneider built for the gliding types ]
Oxygen system was a liberated hospital unit with a ball in a glass tube as the O2 flow meter and a set of tables on a piece of cardboard for flow rates at height.
Tow aircraft down to the mountains was a Tiger Moth, one that I learn’t to fly in in late 1959 and was then sold by the local aero club and then used by the gliding club for towing.
Height reached was 23,600 feet on the barograph and 18,000 foot climb so I had my, in those days the very prestigious FAI, three diamond gliding badge all in the wooden Boomerang glider and my International FAI 3 diamond badge number being no, 994 on the international list.

That flight is now very small beer in the international gliding scene with Project Perlan going for 90,000 feet sustained flight in Andes mountain generated wave systems in the stratosphere’s Antarctic Polar vortex with launches out of Patagonia in southern Argentina.
To hold position in the polar vortex wave systems it has been calculated that the Perlan glider will be flying at I think in excess of 300 kph true airspeed.

They will only get couple of occasions each season where they can launch to about 5 or 10,000 feet, climb in the conventional Andes mountain wave systems and then make the jump to the stratospheric wave systems in the Polar vortex.

From over Patagonia at 90,000 feet the guys, one of whom, Morgan Sandercock flies at our annual Horsham Week gliding competitions each year held every year since 1967 in the first week of February, have calculated that if they headed off downwind with a 300 kph plus tail wind they could make the Falkland Islands out in the Atlantic
The world record distance in a glider stands at close to 3000 kms all done at heights of around 35,000 feet along the colossal Argentinian Andes mountain wave systems

            Nice Speech ROM.

You hit the nail on the head when you reminded us about SCALE, Scale is important, the world is not a 1m diameter sphere and the atmosphere is NOT a thin coat of varnish it is is 5.5 QUADRILLION TONNES of gas enveloping the entire world. A rotating oblate spheroid with a rotational energy of 2.138E29 J. Annual insolation is “ONLY” 3.4e24 Joules so energy of that rotating earth is around about the solar energy received in 60,000 years. Put another way global warming is supposedly driven by a 0.2% imbalance in outgoing Vs Incoming energy and thus earth’s rotation is 30 Million times more energy than a WHOLE YEAR of CO2 warming. The Total energy of earth’s orbit around the sun is 1.14×10^36 Joules around 300 Billion times Annual Insolation or 150 Trillion times annual CO2 Warming.

SCALE, Let me say it again SCALE!

This story has long US legs.
The legal report Jo blogs comes from Rep. Lamar Smith’s Congressional Science and Technology Oversight Committee. It is available in full, with references, via an easy google. It involves comgressionally solicited testimony concerning a Bill before Congress that would extend the low dose radiation studies, crucial to DoE and DHS evacuation decisions concerning, say, a terrorist dirty bomb. The DoE managers wanted to quash the billl to divert funds to CAGW so deliberately slanted their congresional testimony. The low dose radiation expert testified truthfully, as sworn to, despite her superior’s political, orders not to. She was, as a result of the ensuing congressional investigation reinstated. The three managers who forced this illegal and dishonest travesty are now on Trumps ‘you are fired’ short list come 21 Jan 2017. And so the promised swamp draining shall begin. This one is easy, and served up with sufficient legal references and evidence. BANG.

Reasons for keeping the low dose information quiet could be even more complex. The lawsuit against Tepco for the covering up of high radiation levels that U.S. sailors were exposed to, may show levels on the bad side of that nonlinear curve affecting non sailors.
Tepco has been forced to admit the that three Fukushima reactors went into full meltdown by a public admission and apology on the national broadcast TV (NHK)June 2016.
Obama has been getting on very well with Shinzo Abe but a former Japanese prime minister Junichiro Koizumi, has taken the side of the sailors and is assisting.

    21 Sept: Politico: Morning Energy
(SCROLL DOWN) SCIENCE PANEL DRILLS INTO RAD-RELATED FIRING: House Science Committee lawmakers are meeting this morning to put a spotlight on a months-long inquiry around the Energy Department’s firing of Noelle Metting, a longtime radiation biologist with the agency. Science Chairman Lamar Smith isn’t known for getting bipartisan support on his investigations but panel Democrats tell ME that they also have concerns with how Metting’s case was handled. Metting was shown the door not long after she participated in a briefing requested by committee staff in October 2014 to discuss a program studying the effects of low-dose radiation. Metting has since been reinstated after reaching a confidential settlement with DOE. Metting and Sharlene Weatherwax, a DOE associate director for biological and environmental research, are both testifying today. A committee aide said that “Weatherwax was involved in the decision to remove Dr. Metting from federal service. Others were also involved.”

It’s hard to like professional lawyers like Obama and both Clintons and Gillard and Malcolm Turnbull. They seem to have a very different take on high office, seeing it as the pinnacle of their careers rather than a chance to improve the country. Rudd and Abbott were both knifed by lawyers and 2/3 of all politicians are lawyers.

While Abbott has a useful law degree plus an economics degree and Masters in International politics, there is something about practicing law which seems to corrupt people’s ideas of right and wrong. It seems that if you can get away with something, that’s legal. Criminals have the same idea, as with Obeid and Bond and Skase.

Gillard also passed thousands of laws to tie up Australia in regulation while going through criminal law and removing penal provisions for Trade Unions who act strangely as associations not companies. Obama worked hard to leave a legislative minefield and now in his last three weeks, he seems to think it fine to start a cold war with Russia to cover his tracks, daring Trump to do something about it. To his credit, Putin understands this is last move of a desperate man trying to provoke Russia and he is not ejecting US spies. (as if there were none)

Obama’s legacy will be undone slowly and the executive orders quickly.

Perhaps the one thing which needs urgent attention is the RET scheme in Australia which is killing our power stations commercially. This is what is killing Hazelwood and all coal and gas suppliers.

Far from a free market, forcing companies to buy power they do not want from homeowners or windmill consortia is a total corruption of a free market. Like Carbon credits, it is mandatory, so the market is not free but extortionate. What is amazing is that Turnbull and Frydenburg are both talking a trading scheme when on is in place and killing us. However they want to send our cash overseas through merchant bankers, an even bigger cost.

Turnbull was the most popular Liberal party leader because he promised the Greens everything they wanted, even a very fast train like Obama. The ABC will not attack the Prince of Point Piper because he is the best thing that ever happened short of their own government. Labor/Green policies from a real Coalition leader. He has even undone Abbott’s direct action scheme to replace it with the Greens policy. How much more blatant can you get?

The world will get a wake up call this year with so many new world leaders aligned against the Green machine, the most selfish and unscientific disaster to ever hit the world. A war on successful democratic countries waged by no less than the UN and its endless minions, perhaps 40,000 of them all with one purpose, to bring down democracy, whether in the US, Australia, Japan, UK, France or Germany. To their horror, Putin’s Russia is not supporting them but looking after his own people who want peace and security and quality of life and a democracy. They do not want law. That is why Obama is still trying to attack Putin. He and Gillard and Turnbull are from the same selfish lawyer model. It’s all about them. You would have to add Julie Bishop to the list.

The LNT (Linear No Threshold)model has been known for years to be incorrect. Radiation hormesis means we benefit from low radiation doses. The anti-nuclear brigade has ensured that this incorrrect model is still used, as applying it cocsts the nuclear industry a fortune.

You cannot avoid radiation. Seven cosmic rays a second pass through you. There is low level radiation everywhere and in the US, houses get Radon certificates especially in Colorado. Almost all houses in winter frozen climates have a basement, which increases Radon exposure. In the early 20 century AC electricity, radon, ozone were all thought to be good for you, not lethal. Spas offered them as a health service. In Victoria at the seaside there were Ozone hotels and the ferry was the Ozone. What has been confirmed from the real statistics from Hiroshima, Nagasaki and later Chernobyl and three mile Island and Fukishima is that people are amazingly resistant to lower levels of radiation and that while problems occur, they are down below significance level, just another risk.

However if we could just get the US to direct the same funds to fusion R&D, the trillions might just provide us with a future in the post carbon world. Not because we stop using carbon fuels, but simply because they will run out soon and we will have largely wasted 70 years of world peace after 1945. No one is providing for the day when carbon fuels run out. The random unreliable energy from windmills and solar is not enough to power our societies and nuclear is the only option.

You could understand if the anti carbon movement was attempting to stretch our very limited resources, but they universally want to kill of our quality of life and pass wealth to the leaders of much poorer societies, visionary leaders like Robert Mugabe. What those societies really need are our windmills. We should stick to brown coal and look for more natural gas. Why the Australian Labor party became the party against reliable cheap electrical power and jobs is another story.

I guess even UV solar radiation is lethal, especially in Australia with the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, partly the bright sun, partly the hole in the ozone layer which affects only 2% of the world’s population South of the Tropic of Capricorn and partly with the Irish/Scottish ancestry. White skin, no pigment, freckles, red hair. Even so, it is also lethal nuclear generated radiation. So you do not have to go to Xrays to get serious danger. It is all a question of quantity and luck, like everything else in life. Lucky we have so much brown coal. Only a Green theologian would ignore a gift from Gaia like that.

And mostly due to benzene based sunscreens which release free radicals into cells on exposure to UV light and our poor diet that is far too low in free radical scavenging antioxidants like Vitamin E/D. IMHO we could reduce skin cancer rates by advising people to apply Vitamin E cream before exposure to soak up the free radicals produced from UV light. The same sunscreens are causing a vitamin D deficiency epidemic across the western world.

Tdef as I pointed out before if the fixed infrastructure is powered by Nuclear, Carbon fuels can be manufactured and will never run out – Ever. The point is more that bio digestion can make plenty of methane just using waste as a feedstock. Or we can just use Fertiliser – Ammonium Nitrate as an energy source.

        30

        • #
          TdeF

Methane is 30x the power of CO2 as a greenhouse gas. The farts of the millions of animals in Australia, sheep, camels, cows, kangaroos would probably have more impact on the environment than all our efforts, but it was never about the environment was it? It was always about attacking Western Democracies and redistributing wealth to families like the Figueres who ran Costa Rica and now inhabit the UN.

            bobl

Huh TDef? Are you supposing I’m a green blob drone wanting Methane instead of Coal – Context …. We are talking about the situation when the coal and gas runs out! I contend that if we have Nuclear Power by then we can manufacture methane or propane other hydrogen rich solid/liquid like Ammonium to run the smaller mobile stuff like cars. Larger mobile stuff like ships can have their own nuke supply just like submarines do now.

Remember this is when there is no coal and oil left – we make our own, therefore carbon fuels are actually good for ever! Nothing to fear about “Peak Oil” either.

That the LNT theory is invalid may be true, however, what do you replace it with? I am a former qualified radiation worker and we were taught LNT with an acknowledgement that is was unverified but that using it was a conservative basis for contamination and radiation control. But the effect of radiation is apparently quite individual, as are many health issues. So how do you design a radiation control program for thousands of individuals without LNT? Maybe further research by Dr. Metting et. al. can help solve that, I hope so.

The interesting point here is if such research could lead to reduced cost for nuclear power, then that could lead to reduced cost 24/7 nuclear power without CO2 emissions. Wouldn’t that make the greenies happy? Ha! I think not.

31 Dec: Australian: Meredith Booth: Job cuts blamed for South Australia power delays
South Australia’s privately owned electricity distributor cut its field workforce by 5 per cent this year and should take the blame for extensive delays in restoring power to thousands of homes, the linesman union says.
About 580 SA Power Networks powerline workers, half the company’s employees, have been working around the clock to fix lines damaged by Wednesday’s storm, which cut power to one fifth, or 155,000, of the network’s customers.
While thousands endured their third day without power yesterday, bed and breakfast owner Vanessa Lynch was “absolutely flabbergasted by the lack of action” which may leave her street in the Adelaide Hills without power this weekend.
Recently arrived from the Northern Territory, Ms Lynch said she had seen faster restoration of power to homes after devastating cyclones…
Fallen trees have cut power lines but 150 transformers have also been damaged, each taking up to nine hours to fix.
South Australian Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis, whose home was not affected by the blackout, said customers who had suffered more than 48 hours without power deserved more than the $605 in compensation offered by the Hong Kong-majority owned network operator.
He has asked the independent regulator, Essential Services Commission of SA, to remove the $605 cap on guaranteed service level payments as an “incentive” to work faster to repair the grid…

If you want to know what boils the blood of someone like me, this is it. Congress has absolute oversight authority over the executive branch, which includes the Department of Energy. Or at least it did the last time I looked. They can ask any question they want to and must be given the answer. If the answer is sensitive or classified, arrangements can be made to accommodate the need. And in fact, any citizen with knowledge congress needs so it can do its oversight job can be called before a committee to testify under oath. So! Not that it will happen but how do you suppose I would fare if I refused to give answers to a congressional committee?

The DoE has absolutely no legal way it can fail to provide answers to congress, yet here they have tried it. Thankfully they were undone by an honest employee. I can only hope that while she was spilling the beans she spilled every last one before leaving the hearing.

I wonder who else will be fired. Probably no one except the Secretary of Energy when Trump takes office. But I have wanted to get rid of our 2 DoEs for a long time Department of Energy and Department of Education. Or maybe we could hand it over to Rex Tillerson instead of putting him in at State. At least he would know something useful about energy.

It’s unbelievable that January 1, 2017 is here already. Where does the time go?

I suspect some of it went into reading this blog and the comments of all of you who contribute. Without a doubt I would miss you if suddenly you were not here.

I’ve been hanging around about as long as anyone I know of, since 2008 I think and I still find it interesting and challenging. And so I thought I should finally come out and say so.

And once more, Happy New Year!

    Long live CO2

    1. If the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere doubles, the plants will improve their yield by 70%. Plentiful and cheap food.

    2. CO2 is the raw material used by plants to produce carbohydrates, which in turn is the raw material for the energy needed for the existence of a lifetime. And they want to lower it to zero. The [[snip] foolish] will always be with us.

    3. Without CO2 there would be no photosynthesis. And there would be no life. But they insist on reducing it. We will not be able to do it but we’re going to spend a lot of money.

    4. CO2 is not the main greenhouse gas, water vapor and clouds are. And we have no idea of how they form and their dynamics. . But big companies do not produce them. That is enough argument for ecologists not to take them into account.

    5. All the CO2 generated in the last century seems to have contributed to cooling the earth. That is why we had nuclear winter, which was, of course, another hysteria.

    6. The increase in warming began just as we began to cool the air. But with that argument Al Gore does not win the Nobel Prize.

    7. Without CO2 in the atmosphere the Earth would be a dead planet. But there would be no ecologists. Only possible benefit.

    8. All living things, including plants, exhale CO2 when they breathe. From which it follows that to save life you have to eliminate life?

    9. The same environmentalists who want to eliminate CO2 from the Earth want to save the Amazon rainforest. And they think they are scientists.

    10. In the last 30 years the global vegetation (“the green”) has grown 14% due to the growth of CO2 in the atmosphere. It is that the CO2 is politically very incorrect.

    11. Without CO2, water vapor and methane in the atmosphere the temperature on Earth would be -30 °. And the IPCC want zero CO2. Even the ecologists would be frozen.

    12. The future of life will not be catastrophic by producing much CO2 but by producing little. CO2 is life. Without it, you would not exist.

    13. When the Cambrian explosion occurred in which we went from the unicellular to the multicellular, there was 10 times more CO2 in the atmosphere. Is nature trying to tell us something?

    14. The more CO2 is there in the atmosphere the more photosynthesis is there in earth .And more photosynthesis means more life. But ecologists believe they know more than nature.

    15. Ecologists, I tell you that climate change has been occurring since 4.5 billion years. Up and down. Without human intervention. Foolish

    16. If all the electrical matrix of Chile were solar, the panels would occupy about 20% of the territory. (Eg from Arica to Taltal) Very ecological! (Note: Do the calculation for any country).

    17. Making an electric car produces almost 40% more CO2 than making a conventional one. And the [[snip] foolish] call it “ecological”

    18. The combustion does not produce more CO2, it only returns the one that was trapped and that, anyway, was going to be returned. Coal cycle, they call it.

    19. Almost all pro-life people want to eliminate fossil fuels because they produce CO2. Will you notice the contradiction?

    20. The great fertilizer of the vegetable world is CO2. And that’s free! But the ecologists want to reduce it to zero by the year 2100. Just when you have to feed 10 billion people.

    21. If you are in your early years at university, know that there has been no climate change since you were entering Kindergarten, but that we have produced more CO2 than we produced before you were born.

    22. They went from “greenhouse gases” to “global warming” and now go on “climate change”. Nature does not pay any attention to them.

    23. A vegan proudly tells me: I do not eat chemicals.
    And what will he eat?
    Air?.

    24. CO2 is 0.04% of the atmosphere. Of the 85,000 molecules of CO2 that are in the atmosphere only 1 is of human origin. But for the faithful it is very powerful. It produces a brutal change in the climate.

    25. For worshipers of global warming, the sun is for adorned.

    26. Science has to do with evidence not with consensus. Politics has to do with consensus not with evidence.

    27. Einstein also had a consensus against: “100 experts against Einstein” was called the book. It did not help them. The evidence is stubborn.

    28. In the only part where global warming is occurring is in scientists’ computers.

    29. In a solar panel only 17% of the light is transformed into electricity, the rest is radiated back as heat: More global warming.

    30. You inhale Oxygen and exhale CO2. It’s called respiration. And the eco-bureaucratics measure the “carbon footprint”. Will they want us to stop breathing?

    31. No combustion “produces” CO2, it only releases the CO2 that was accumulated and previously taken from the atmosphere. But the ignorant insist on the contrary. As the ignorant always do.

    32. Life has always been better in warm periods than in cold periods. Mammals are an example. Ecologists are other.

    33. The global warming industry is worth a trillion dollars. Is understandable the rage against the skeptical scientists. Science was never the reason.

    34. 25% of all current CO2 in the atmosphere occurred in the last 30 years. The same ones in which the temperature has remained basically stable. Al Gore won the Nobel for telling us just the opposite.

    35. Water vapor is the largest greenhouse gas. Environmentalists should call it a “pollutant.” They do not dare. Governments would ignore them. Water, too.

    36. Climate change models do not take into account water vapor. How inconvenient for them that the planet is 65% water.

    37. Too bad luck for the solar panels, the Earth insists to circle around the sun.

    38. Environmentalists predict an environmental catastrophe. If they remove CO2 from the atmosphere they will get it.

    39. The laws of nature are not laws of nature by consensus or by vote. The laws of nature do not see Al Gore movies.

    40. The more CO2 there is, the more plants we shall have. The more plants around, the more life around, too.

    41. 7 January 2017. Cold 30 ° below zero in Europe leaves more than 20 dead in Poland, Italy, Russia, Turkey, Bulgaria and Greece. According to Al Gore all those countries should be burned already.

    42. You are a generating plant: You take the carbohydrates and mix it with the oxygen and you generate CO2 and water to produce energy for your life. The thermoelectric plants do the same but the energy generated is to produce your electricity. Ecologists should go out and protest against their bodies.

    43. Antarctic ice cores show that the temperature rises first and CO2 follows it around 800 years later. Al Gore, as a politician, understood everything the other way around.

[Nicely put! Hopefully next time not so long though.] AZ
