Using “Enviromentalism” and the UN as a trade weapon: China fires fake “Reef Scare” missile

Ever since Australia asked for an investigation into the source of Covid, China has been accidentally-on-purpose sticking pins into our trade deals. Pop went the wine, coal, beef, barley and lobster markets.

Now after concreting corals reefs in the South China Sea and plundering the Galapagos, China is suddenly concerned about the Great Barrier Reef.  Overnight Chinese players in the UN have pushed it to the top of a list that had 82 more fragile ecosystems ahead of it. Pop, goes the tourism trade as the headlines ring out that UNESCO says the Reef is “in danger”.

At the moment, the only tourists that could possibly be frightened away are a few New Zealanders, because no one else can easily get around the two week quarantine. But when flights reboot, Australia just needs to send photos of the glorious corals to the world and “pop” goes the UN and China’s reputation.

It’s time the West dumped the UN — it’s just a play tool for Sino power

That would “pop” some of the CCP web of influence. What’s a Veto of a dead committee worth?

How many other environmental scares have been pumped and carved to serve Beijing?

If China is so adept and willing to use fake environmentalism as a cold war weapon, what other environmental knobs have they turned?

China-led ‘ambush’ on health of the Great Barrier Reef

Ben Packham, The Australian

Australia has been blindsided by a push by a China-chaired UN committee to declare the Great Barrier Reef “in danger” without proper consultation or scientific process.

Any downgrading of the reef’s status would threaten the 64,000 jobs and $6.4bn in tourism revenue linked to the natural wonder in a normal year.

Australia is a member of the 21-nation World Heritage Committee, but the body – under the chairmanship of China’s Vice-Minister for Education Tian Xuejun – is considered likely to accept the recommendation.

China also holds the position of UNESCO deputy director-general, the presidency of UNESCO’s International Union for Conservation for Nature, and is head of Asia at the World Heritage Centre – all three of which contributed to the World Heritage Committee’s draft decision.

The World Heritage Committee has not visited the reef since 2012, and there has been no mention of an “in danger” listing since 2015.

Commenters at The Australian get it:

AndrewL:
Where is the UN Committee on Democracy Heritage, which could declare free elections (and everything else valued by champions of liberty) endangered in China? What a joke.
Mark:
Perhaps we should pour a heap of concrete over the reef and build a military base on it? China wouldn’t say no to that.

If China is so interested in the health of the GBR, they ought immediately stop commissioning a new coal power plant every 10 days and decommission the ones they already have.

    Not holding my breath.

Perhaps the only reason they are interested is they hope to one day own it and build coal and nuclear power stations there.

China’s purpose with this action is to set Australians against Australians. To sow discord.

Which was the orioginal purpose of the World Heritage business anyway. To cede sovereignty bit by bit. Don’t say we weren’t warned.

    ” … the UN and China’s reputation.”

It (the reputation) is sort of one and the same, isn’t it?
Anyway, could it get any lower?

Doesn’t one have to be of a certain age to even know how to spell UN?
Isn’t it a Cold War anachronism?
It’s been absorbed into the Global Capitalist Technocracy which is explicitly anti nation state. (And anti individual liberty.)
    Nothing to unite.
The real action’s happening when Zuck and Xi exchange emails.

(The Cold War is over and the Commucapitalists won.)

Some of these people understand the ‘climate crisis’ has never been about climate in the sense that ordinary people understand it. When they speak about climate, they are talking about the whole socioeconomic system — about trade, employment, law, and capitalism — all which they despise and seek to change to something much worse. It is from capitalism and trade they maintain all the evil springs. They write this dressed in man-made fibers, from their (concrete and glass) air-conditioned office or homes, using the latest (plastic, glass, and metal) technology they can afford. These people are the puppets of the UN/CCP.

Interesting twist on why nuclear energy isn’t promoted to solve the alleged climate change crisis. Let’s hope that Barnaby Joyce, who is a big support of nuclear power generation, uses a megaphone and yells into Morrison’s ear to relax the restriction here on nuclear energy, and does it every day until it’s done.

No. Forget nuclear and resume exhausting our unlimited trove of coal. As to “carbon theory”, demand proof of its validity.

The same reason why the RAN cannot consider purchase of nuclear powered submarines and ships, as former General, now Senator Jim Molan commented recently.

Firstly uranium mining is limited by state governments legislation and nuclear energy is banned by federal and state with one exception, the nuclear medicine and commercial radio isotope reactor near Sydney at Lucas heights.

Secondly, Australia has no nuclear industry to support nuclear power, apart from a small group at Lucas Heights. To establish the personnel and expertise to support RAN nuclear vessels would take several years if the ban was lifted, nuclear power plants must have specialist maintenance support.

PM Morrison is achieving more than he is given credit for, and usually by people who do not know about or understand the political world he operates in and the numbers game meaning the majority wins. He has a slim parliamentary majority and within the Coalition and Cabinet there are unfortunately LINO (Liberals In Name Only) globalist leftists and the Nationals also have a few like minded leftists.

Read about how the PM resisted pressure as a guest at the G7 Meeting and during finalisation of the Trade Agreement with the UK, he refused to pledge to commit to net zero emissions by anytime frame, he said Australia has an aspirational target but intends to work towards it based on new technology advances, not economic vandalism (my words).

I hope the new leader of the Nats, Barnaby Joyce tells the China-chaired UN committee where to stick their suggestion. Perhaps an investigation should be conducted to determine if it is ever carried out it could be interpreted as a act of war.

A couple of years ago Barnaby Joyce organised a survey, asking 3000 people what they thought about our energy mix. Not unsurprisingly a third said they want renewables, while a third wanted nuclear power.

Not the PM or the DPM stand alone in decision making, they discuss matters with other Cabinet Ministers and there is a democratic voting system.

Remember that both leaders were elected to their positions by the MPs of their party who are also given a voice in party room meetings and joint party room meetings.

Who would have expected the Chinese Communist party to be expert at taking over committees? And bribing other members to support them. What else is the Belt and Road about? And the world’s Green parties, like Australia’s so called Greens, headed by Adam Bandt, an avowed lifelong communist.

And Australia’s historic Labor party cares nothing for workers, workers’ rights and workers’ jobs, in case that was that was not obvious. Where almost all Liberal and National party members have absolute majorities, most Labor MPs would be out of a job without Green preferences. That was why Malcolm Turnbull and deputy Lucy were Greens whose vision was an alliance and total control and their own political party and the elimination of both the Liberals and the Labor parties.

Australia’s Labor party do what they are told by the CCP, as do most of the military dictatorships in the UN. Certainly in Africa.
It used to be Russia, who are a great disappointment to most Communists and simply don’t have the cash any more.

As for Australia’s illegally large ABC, they think they are invulnerable. Having jailed senior Cardinal Pell without any evidence at all, they made a huge mistake in trying to destroy the Federal Attorney General by innuendo, veiled accusations and pretend journalism. And MD David Anderson knows it, settled the case and knows what comes next, as with the BBC in the UK. They are making real enemies now.

Who needs a fifth column when you have the ABC, the Greens and the Labor party? Why not just continue to sell the coal mines and the ports and the farms to the CCP and be done with it? Who needs the lazy overpaid workers who can be replaced with tourists and student and mass migration? Or is that not obvious too?

And where would we be today if the CCP with the support of their vassal African states had not put a communist in charge of the WHO? Over three million dead with a French/American bioweapon and the Western world in total disarray. The WHO, IPCC and now the World Heritage group are using these little committees to destroy Western Democracies.

I would not have believed that one day the United Nations would be in de facto charge of world Climates? It’s absurd. The UN controls our climate? The very idea is beyond belief and yet it is what the G7 found most important. At least until Scott Morrison turned up with his little story and even the UK is sending its new carrier group.

Don’t defund the police. Defund the UN, the BBC, the ABC and force the third tier councils to spend only on their ratepayers benefit, not 75% on their communist social agendas as in Australia. In our council, the average salary of council workers is $140,000. Who needs to be a GP? And so much is spent on extremist social agendas like aboriginal affairs in a region with no aboriginals. I am particularly tired of giving thanks to people who built nothing, did nothing and claim everything, even the invention of agriculture, manufacture and farming. Our Western democracies are being white anted by bolshevik committees, as always.

It’s high time Mr Morrison stopped his megaphone diplomacy with China via the MSM and spent some time asking our diplomats and Ambassador to discuss and negotiate with China in a less public way. It is apparent that China will do all it can to damage Australia which, despite the flag wavers and gung ho shouters, is very important to Australia’s economic well being. Antagonising a powerful China is futile and not in Australia’s best interests

Ian, nothing upsets the west as much as when a former colony, throws off its shackles and claims its place in the sun.

The exact opposite is Australia, who is so indoctrinated, that it can not make any decisions without asking its master. Thus when the USA got Australia to say publicly what the USA would not (about Covid), it was Australia who pays the penalty not the USA. Side note: USA China trade is going gangbusters, and is several orders of magnitude larger than Aus-China Trade.

So the USA gets the message, without losing face, while lapdog Australia has to pay the price.

Oh and by the way, Australia has 4 other sites in the top 10, 2 on the Murray alone, not to mention the cultural vandalism the West Australian government allows in places like Juuken, Burrap Yarra, and Western Ranges.

Sorry Ian, but the CCP needs to be called out and Morrison is right to not buckle to their Trade War Di-lomacy.
I see the CCP reaction to Morrison’s call for a full investigation into the release of the Wuhan Virus as a sign of weakness on their behalf, an admission of guilt, at being caught out, of this was used as a bio weapon.
No, Australia is right to call them out, we are strong enough to withstand their barbs and arrows, there will be some trade pain, but we needed a reminder not to become too reliant on China. It is apparent that China will do all it can to damage Australia…

This reminds me of when some government figures in NZ spoke critically of China on an issue, I can’t remember which one, maybe it was some limp support for the people of Hong Kong… Anyway, it was enough to provoke a reaction. Suddenly NZ ships couldn’t unload their cargo – they got stuck outside Chinese ports; passenger planes were turned back mid-air to NZ because of “paperwork” glitches.

To get it sorted, Jacinda scuttled off to China to soothe the ruffled feathers, kiss a few hems, and magically all was well: the ships and planes started to move again. (Maybe she privately gave the CCP some assurances about no more “wrong words”. How would we know?)

So that’s where NZ is now. Tethered to a giant who knows he can twitch the leash at any moment to get compliance.

How far is Australia down that path?
And is that where Aussies want to be?

JCU is what happens when you put a businesswoman in charge on $30,000 a week whose job it is to get more students and more cash. The persecution of innocent Dr. Peter Ridd continues in the High Court this week. Like the ABC, who approved the use of millions of dollars of taxpayer money to pursue your strategic enemies. Why isn’t the ABC asked to pay for the cost of attacking Porter? And Pell? Imagine the uproar if an aborigine was jailed on fake charges? Where are the formal abject apology and the millions in reparations for Pell?

And why do both the Federal and Queensland governments ignore the millions wasted by the JCU Vice Chancellor denying Ridd his superannuation settlement, which is far less than they are spending? The point is Ridd cannot be allowed to be right about the widespread science fraud at JCU, exposed again recently with 22 fake science papers.

I wonder if this will be raised in the High Court? Or will it be blah blah fish cakes?

My understanding is that Ridd’s court case relates to his freedom to challenge the orthodoxy, rather than the integrity of the content, but I take your point that all of the hard left Marxist institutions use the same methods of cancel and persecution when faced with valid criticism. They also truly believe that they are above the law when the law impedes their ideological agenda, giving them a moral free pass to “trial by the mob”, mass riots, violence and destruction of property, vandalism of private and public property, intimidation and direct threats to individuals, blockades of major roadways, etc, etc…

Perhaps our greatest concern though lies in the Marxist infiltration into our legal institutions, clearly evidenced when the Victorian court of appeals upheld the wrongful conviction of Pell, although we noted that the High Court was still free from ideological corruption when it voted unanimously to squash the conviction. But, how long will it take before the entire legal system is overtaken by these Marxist criminals and falls ?. And I use the word criminals here deliberately, because it is a crime to pervert the course of justice, and I don’t see anyone pursuing the people in the Victorian Court of appeals for their wrongful upholding of the original Pell decision. Hopefully Ridd’s case will also receive fair justice in the High court and from the recent Pell decision I think we still have high confidence, fingers crossed because these people need to be held to account.

Looking at the news tonight it may well be that China is right and Peter Ridd wrong about the condition of the GBR.

The conservation status for Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has declined from “significant concern” to “critical” due to increasing impacts associated with climate change, a new report has found.

And this morning, Paul Kelly in the Australian is attacking Morrison and warning of conflict with Barnaby Joyce about Climate. Forget China. What is our Prime Minister going to do to enforce carbon limits by 2050, like everyone else. We must save the Climate. Then the Aborigines. Then the Great Barrier Reef.

Who is setting this agenda on this 33rd anniversary of the invention of the Climate Crisis? What crisis? Between the UN IPCC, the UN WHO and the UNESCO, Australia is under siege. Not least by self appointed Australian expert journalists. Not one of them a scientist, but as one man said to me, I’m a Climate Scientist. So is everyone else. Sounds better than communist lackey and climatebagger.

I wonder how many scientists there are amongst the commenters here.

Talking of scientists, Peter Ridd gets his day in court.

‘The High Court will hear an appeal on Wednesday by Professor Peter Ridd against his dismissal by James Cook University. Ridd lost his job after publicly criticising other academics and their research. The High Court will determine whether his dismissal was lawful after 27 years with the institution.’ (Oz)

This is just another way that China is seeking to punish Australia for requesting that the origins of covid-19 be properly investigated.

It’s a political ploy but China knows that it will be supported by other countries who “agree” with the UN on man-made climate change because it means that they’ll get some money from developed countries.

China is using UNESCO as part of its political retaliation against Australia because Australia wanted a proper investigation into the origins of covid-19.

Simple solution – stop being a member of the UN.

This Leftist body is the playground of despots and dictators, and anything coming out of it and its endless committees is just pure ideological garbage without any foundation.

People need to wake up on this. But the ABC and mainstream media play along and are just PR Offices for the UN rather than making any actual attempt at investigation of this corrupt organisation.

China commissioned 38.4 gigawatts (GW) of new coal plants in 2020
China has 88.1 GW of coal power under construction.
Another 158.7 GW is proposed for construction.

In 2020, China had 184 coal plants under construction.

Kind of dwarfs the concerns in AU about their few remaining coal plants, eh?

Back in the 1980’s, Maurice Strong, Canadian representative to the UN, was instrumental in setting up the IPCC to demonize fossil fuels, the source of cheap, reliable power that made capitalism so successful. His sister was a comrade of Mao and he ended his days living in Beijing.
It now looks likely that because the CO2 hoax was taking too long to cripple capitalism, the CCP, through the WHO, organised the Covid bioweapon to be released to speed up the demise of the West and capitalism.
Clearly the CCP had been busy over at least the past half century, working to gain control of the World and all of its citizens.
When the next big freeze arrives, the Windmills will freeze up, the solar panels will be covered in ice and snow and there will be no electricity in those countries who have undertaken the current politically correct CO2 abatement policies. We will all freeze or starve to death and the CCP will send their well-nourished troops in to take over the country, having built the power stations necessary to maintain their population.
    How stupid are we???

Strong’s model for a perfect after free market capitalism was ended system is Communist China and their tightly controlled and managed version of capitalism.

He died in China after being granted asylum when escaping from Canadian Environment Protection Agency Officers, his connection began through his cousin who was a close friend of Mao Zedong who wrote the Little Red Book and is alleged to have been responsible for the deaths of millions of Chinese people, many starved and others were disposed of in other ways.

It is worth reading the history of Maurice Strong, Canadian billionaire and leftist.

One: China is throwing barbs from behind its walls of guilt. A juvenile communist response. Creating false enemies as they go.

Two: China is comfortable with elites that are driving the agenda of the reset. This is the hope of the communist regime as it makes “friends” in the right places.

China lets the virus out and elitists gain control and the media plays its role as an instrumental establishment to create the state of panic.

Network of smart cities needs to be dismantled by voting the front-line of elitists out of power. This front-line includes ALP and the greens.

UN and its establishment needs to put in place to perform their role when called upon by the members of the establishment via a vote system. Currently it is a one sided affair given the left influence and the left dominance within the member states. Vote them out at local and federal elections and UN will soon lose its grip.

The Chinese Government, through the alleged release of a toxic virulent virus, targeting the unprepared countries and persons, has wreaked death and confusion on its purported enemies.
The alleged release is covered up by the redacting of all information about the activities in Wuhan prior to the viral pandemic.
This means, at the moment, that proof beyond reasonable doubt is not nailed down.
However, as this unravels slowly, there should be a case made against those who managed to release this virus from a high security lab.
Another case then made against those identified as covering up the release.
This is a crime against all humanity, if proven.
As part of compensation, China should be required to pay compensation to those it has allegedly harmed.
Their attacks on our pristine reef system need to be compared to their inability and incompetence in controlling a simple virus in a high security lab.
As far as their reefs they clim from weak neighbours, they put floating nuclear barges next to them to provide power for the drilling.
Cover them with concrete and then drill for gas and oil.
    The Greens never complain.
They are a captive also of the Chinese framing of reality.
    Start talking heads of compensation.
A good start would be the Port of Darwin the Port of Newcastle and any dock on the Western Seaboard of Australia.

Don’t blame China. We did this to ourselves with the reef is dying narrative every time there is a bleaching event. Whether it’s the mainstream media , especially the ABC or our academic institutions especially James Cook Uni , they have created a consensus. All the Chinese are doing is highlighting this false narrative. If we are told to trust the science why should we complain if the Chinese wish to do the same. The damage to tourism on the GBR had been well and truly entrenched by the alarmists long before this move by the Chinese.

You missed the point entirely. It is the hypocrisy of the CCP that is the point in that it is proven they have NO regard for the environment yet they choose to attack in an attempt to embarrass Australia under a false premise of the reef being in danger.

Simple reply. Barrier Reef glorious; South China Reefs buried in concrete.
One presumes this will be our governments tactic – if it has the spine.

China obeys no international law, but would use it against others where ever possible. It’s hypocritical, has no use for ethical values. What is more hypocritical than this nonsense on the GBR. What about the virus, China? The world seems to believe now it truly is the Wuhan virus. The only question is how you used its escape, and did it ‘escape’ deliberately or otherwise from the lab?

UN has become nothing more than a political tool. It is allowing these abuses to destroy it (as it should be.)Fold it, set up another body closely defined by Charter for charitable relief and debates on world affairs if needed. The Security Council is becoming a toothless tiger as more nations take up nuclear weapons.

Tomorrow, the High Court of Australia will hear the Peter Ridd case. It will determine the future of academic freedom in universities.

Peter Ridd exposed the corrupt science that was coming out out by James Cook University in relation to the Great Barrier Reef.

If the High Court rules in favour of Peter Ridd, it will be momentous. It will also give credibility to what Peter Ridd exposed about the corrupt science regarding the Great Barrier Reef and that the reef is actually very healthy.

It seems as though it’s a matter of how the High Court sees his scientific disagreement versus the document on collegiality – or should that be cordiality. Whatever happens, how refreshing was it to see a person taking on his peers in the same strong manner in which true believers attack ‘sceptics’. He doesn’t even have the power of cancellation as they do and which the University seemed to have used on him. Cancellation, as debate, is anathema to the advancement of true science.

Strictly speaking we are in an ice age already and the Barrier Reef is doing fine.

You might be colloquially referring to the periodic glaciation that comes along, and we are slowly but surely heading into another one. Based on the estimate that the reef is more than half a million years old, it’s been through quite a few of those already. Comes back bigger every time.

Has anyone gone down the track of artificial reef creation along Australia’s continental shelf?

With the tiny amount of warming and slightly higher CO2 dissolved in the water, there’s probably an open opportunity to take some small chunks of live reef and perhaps 100 tonnes of random scrap steel (old beds, burned out car bodies, washing machines … stuff we can’t send to China anymore) and make a nice little pile down at the bottom with a bit of corral on the top.

    Here’s the cool part:
    * Corral grows.
    * Fish come along and hang around the artificial reef.
    * Fishing trawlers go elsewhere to save their nets.
    * Wait for it … Australia claims the carbonate as CO2 sequestration.

Sure, it’s solving a problem that doesn’t exist … but we get some nice little reefs out of it.

I doubt it would cost much, and just imagine the kind of virtue signalling you could do. As the corral grows the CO2 sequestration goes up exponentially.

The whole GBR saga would be quite funny, if it wasn’t such a joke. Remember Peter Ridd? He was crucified by JCU (the Australian wing of the CCP) for daring to say that the GBR was not in a dangerous situation. Coral reefs globally depend on the PH of their ocean. As far as the current data says, the PH of the oceans has not changed significantly for centuries…no acid, no alkali. Coral reefs live and die, their fluctuations having NOTHING to do with AGW.

Judo is largely a matter of using the opponent’s mass against them. China is using judo on the entire western world and especially the English speaking world. We have become stupidly “overweight” by way of excessive regulation, excessive attention to polls, corrupt politicians and government agencies — in fact broad swaths of our population are corrupt and obsessed with their neuroses over the environment, fairness, racism, climate, income inequality and so forth.

One response is to allow oneself to be slapped around endlessly by the fellow who is already bullying you — like an abused spouse. The other response might be, oh, i suppose, to make better use of your own resources, do not make life expensive with unneeded and counter-productive regulations, get people to actually produce value rather than rent-seek, and diversify your supply chains. It takes some discipline and time, but it can be done. At least I hope it can be done because we in the U.S. are seriously ponderous by all these measures.
