Jo pointed out 16 month ago that vaccines would not play-out well over time. Finding antivirals and effective regimens was the more likely direction to be effective with in the longer game (in conjunction), for when the vaccines failed to cover all strains. So it is.
That said, there is a lot of BS being churned out in the media about India right now. If you look at the mortality there, or even in Brazil for that matter, the mortality rates in Europe dwarf those in either country, and India in particular, so how could their new strain be so deadly then?
The claims on the ABC’s site are some of the most inaccurate and hysterical, when it comes to India. They claimed 1 person died ever 4 seconds, which was not close to true on the numbers, of course. For example, there are 86,400 seconds in 24 hours, so for that to be true 21,600 people would have to die on that day. When they said it officially about 3,000 were dying per day, in all of India, from COVID19.
Seven times smaller than ABC reported. Same with mortality, the Indian morality was 123 in 1 million at the time (it’s now a fair bit higher), but in Europe 2,500 deaths per million is typical. So how can the Indian strains be some much more deadly, or contagious? They aren’t, quite the reverse, the European effects and deaths are vastly greater than what is occurring in India, or even in Brazil. So frankly, the Indian situation is a comparative non-event still. That could change, and they become more like Europe, but so far they India has got off incredibly lightly.
So what’s all this bodies being burned in the streets stuff on ABC, and other click-bait sites? Well, as it turns out, it is normal for Indians to burn bodies, especially when their movement is being restricted and they can’t do it elsewhere.
I took the population of India and presumed a lifespan of about 70 years, so I did come rough calcs, because 1.4 billion alive means a minimum of 1.4 billion deaths must occur in side of 70 years. Which come out to ~152 deaths per second, every second in all of India.
So what do you do with the bodies, if you an;t go anywhere and funerals are out of the question? Well, you burn them in the street, right? Hence why there are so many bodies that “we’re running out of firewood”, to burn them. Thus the hysterical media photos and claims of apocalypse in India, especially on the ABC. All confected BS, and you can bet the ‘Journos’ know it’s a massive misrepresentation of the real situation in India.
Lying click-bait is King on planet Google.
There’s no story on the ABC site which will not be loaded to the gills with brazen lies and misrepresentations of any topic. Objective truth is of course not actually available to people, ever, but you can get much closer to comprehending the reality of situations, if you try. But ABC does not try. Quite the reverse, they deliberately and actively avoid reporting the approximate truth, routinely. They go to extravagant lengths to create fictions out of known facts, which tell a completely different story. Despicable.

I would assume a simple error – sloppy but not nefarious.
I heard a reporter live from Delhi this morning (on that source you can trust – ABC Radio News), and she said four new cases per second, and one death each four minutes. And that the death rate from all causes was currently exceeding the birth rate.
I’m not sure why the figures from India are suspected to be too high – most reporters from there really believe that the numbers (cases + deaths) are significantly under-reported.

Reconnaissance by “fire”
The “test” was actually of the “official responses”. I think most of us know how that went.
Those who have done NBC warfare training will be aware that biological and chemical strikes are not simply intended to be mass casualty generators, but the be mass “area denial” activities. If an area is plastered with Anthrax or binary “V” agents, entry to that area can only be conducted by troops wearing full protective gear, traveling in protected vehicles. As anyone who has worn full MOPP 3 gear at any time, for more than a few minutes, such attire may offer protection, but it seriously impedes body movement and sight and hearing. It also has to be changed fairly frequently as the chemically suit liner is degraded by the wearer’s sweat and body oils being soaked up. The very expensive filters in the fully-hooded masks need to be change regularly as well.
Critically, weapons and personal equipment need to be constantly monitored for contamination and if needed, be “decontaminated using sundry chemicals and goodies like steam-cleaners.
ALL of which is a major embuggerance to troop deployment and even such mundane tasks as eating and going to the latrine.
This “embuggerance” is of VERY high tactical value to the people who launched the stuff.
There ARE emergency jab kits to minimize the effect of contact with most of these nerve agents, but that is one more complexity to be factored into a tactical situation.
Battlefield Bio-Hazards are just as untidy to deal with.

Maybe a test run but definitely a controlled release. I think we have lost sight of the pattern of the initial hot spots. China closed down internal travel before they admitted it even existed yet allow it’s citizens to travel around the world from Wuhan. The initial external outbreaks were limited to western financial hubs like London & New York and technological hubs in fields that China trailed the west like microprocessors in California and robotics in northern Italy. And coincidentally the place that produces 40% of the worlds processors Taiwan remained unscathed while China’s military incursion activities increased.
I think it was an intentional controlled release and it was a dud, I think China had planned that the west would not be in a position to stop it taking Taiwan, but that hasn’t happened.
And where did SinaVac come from? It just appeared in full production within months, my guess is that it already existed in the same lab.

Why is it so?

That ocean heat gain is a mystery. My quick calculations show that the current agreed heat imbalance of 0.6watts/sqmetre ends up adding 0.1C to the ocean every 42,000 years. So the story is that it is confined to the upper ocean while CO2 is confined to the lower ocean. That way they can claim CO2 causes Global Warming because it heats the surface. Even so, I have never understood why the idea that the ocean releases CO2 as a consequence is never considered. They jump to the idea that somehow the ocean is heated by CO2? Which makes no sense. The oceans do not radiate much because they are cooler than the land. And even the air is not hotter by much and +1.5C has to be divided by 1400 to get the change in ocean temperature. It all seems to be contrived fantasy where increased ocean surface temperatures would produce a real jump in CO2, the imbalance in radiation is tiny. So is industrial CO2.
The argument against that rapdily increasing CO2 has never happened before, so it must be our fault. This in turn is ‘proven’ by ice cores but I am very suspicious that relatively rapid changes in CO2 are not trackable by ice cores because of predictable leaching and averaging. In each case the promoters of CO2 warming tell us that CO2 cannot move in ice and cannot move in the oceans. Both seem a very convenient and unproven rationalizations to make a most unlikely scenario plausible.
But then ‘The Science’ is all about unlikely scenarios without proof. Real science proves that our contribution to aerial CO2 is under 4%. It should have ended there 33 years ago. James Hansen’s thesis is rubbish science, as is very obvious now that his failed predictions are history.

As for measuring the heat gain in the ocean, how do they do it? A change of 0.1C in the entire ocean would be incredible. The approach people take of assuming everything is constant except what they are measuring is just nuts.
The oceans have currents in every directions, including up and down. And the heat capacity of the oceans make them a massive solar battery. Consider each 0.1C as 42,000 years of heating. We may not think of the oceans as warm, but they are warm and a large proportion of humanity lives near oceans for the warmth in winter and coolness in summer and the fresh water which comes from the evaporation. It is outrageous that anyone presumes to predict long term climates without a thorough modelling of the massive ocean currents which contain almost all the heat on the surface of the planet.

It looks like the alleged JCU faking of Climate Science results with fish and CO2 is a major scandal internationally. Too much money chasing CO2 drama, destroyed reefs, dying fish. All fake. ‘Yesterday the Mantua Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) report for April 2018 was +0.11 which is neutral phase. During the past 9 months PDO has been uncharacteristically neutral following a sharp warm event in 2014-2016 and preceded by an equally impressive cool event in 2010-2012. The last time near neutral PDO index over a 9-month period occurred was more than 10 years ago.
‘Interestingly, the descent in the PDO index from one of the strongest positive phase events on record in 2014-2016 not reaching the cool phase implies that the long-term PDO climate may have indeed reversed to the warm cycle.

In the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) at or near the equator the trade winds come together. With much convective activity (storms) the air rises to the Troposphere and then moves towards its originating Pole. It moves to the temperate regions where it descends.
With >90% of world population and industry, the NH was called the ‘dirty’ hemisphere. The SH was termed ‘clean’ because >80% was ocean. During the 60’s in the depths of the Cold War, here in SH we were in the safest place on the planet.
AGW theory dictates that NH should be very high in CO2 and therefore comparatively much hotter than SH. If the alarmists say, No, the CO2 is the same all over the world, then it proves that AGW Theory is totally wrong and cannot be used. Why on earth is Australia forced to play, at great expense, this fanciful fake game. We can make zero difference.

In the last couple of there was a post about Joe Biden telling the world they need to get to an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030 and zero emissions by 2050. As we know, the rich and powerful and presidents and their entourages are not going to change their carbon emitting lifestyles so to achieve zero emissions the rest will have to go carbon negative.

In case no one noticed, the graph of CO2 has not shown any signs of human intervention, even a total shutdown of cars, aircraft, cruise ships, public meetings and at least a third of a million windmills. I also object to the graphs of CO2 showing a boom in CO2 against times past. It presumes totally that pulses in CO2 are preserved in ice cores from thousands of years ago when resolution of 100 years would be impossible as the gases leach from one era to the next. If you accept that CO2 dating from ice cores needs to be averaged to account for leaching, there is nothing unusual about our CO2. It reacts near instantly to warming ocean surfaces. But such sudden changes are averaged to nothing in the ice record.
Science is abused when people do not assign error bars to data. Our current CO2 levels are just noise on the graph, averaged to nothing.

In the “olden days” of sailing ships Hartlepool was an important port and had ship building and repair facilities, and other industries.

The Biden-Democrat plan to reduce CO2 emissions will achieve widespread economic pain, unemployment and increased poverty in the USA and probably elsewhere to, in countries silly enough to emulate the idea. It will also fail to reduce CO2 emissions in any worthwhile way. At no stage in the catastrophe will Biden or the Democrats notice that reducing CO2 has only a detrimental effect on life on earth and no noticeable or even measurable effect on temperature.

Hi guys,
Haven’t commented here for yonks although I’ve looked in from time to time. Well…hasn’t this Covid changed the world. I want to relate here my experience of suffering from Covid.
I and four others contracted the virus on one site. For me, it started with a dry cough. A kind of itch in the throat. Around ten days later, I woke to a constricting cough that produced a clear, thickish mucus. I felt like I was drowning!
I was rushed to hospital under oxygen. About ten days later I was released. I had lost my sense of taste and smell. Since I have recovered those senses. The difference is my sense of smell has been supercharged. My lungs are shot. I could not walk up a set of stairs without gasping for air. I completely lost my fitness and to this day can not put on weight. I am now 59 Kg, sopping wet with a beer in my hand.
Through cardio exercise I have recovered, but not fit as I was. Have had a few relapses when I coughed up blood, my lungs are a moonscape! Sh#t happens. I won’t be getting the vaccinations…I will rely on my antibodies.
If they fail, such is life.

Your report counteracts my view that most Covid is fairly benign. You have been very sick and are still suffering.
Two things:
1. Did you try any of the remedies discussed here on the blog, during the early stages of the illness, eg Vit C and Vit D, hydoxychloroquine and or ivermectin, antibiotics? (Zelenko protocol?)
2. The vaccine could be contraindicated in previously infected people. The AZ vaccine instructs your cells to make spike protein. If you already have a primed immune system I would be concerned about an over reaction leading to potential severe effects.

Perhaps one of the most common misconceptions when it comes to electrical power generation is that coal fired power is not all that great, because it cannot ramp up and down.
Well, it actually does ramp up and down, and on a daily basis as well, but the main part of all that is that it does not need to ramp up and down ….. on the SHORT notice basis that we are told, because it’s never the case that it needs to do that.
So, let me show you how it does ramp up and down.
I have specifically selected this first image shown at this link, not to cherry pick, but to show you what I mean. Now, while this image is taken from 10 July 2014, just seven years back, that’s as far back as I can show you exactly with an image, and I selected this one because it shows that coal fired power and the total are a similar shape, as they are in the cooler Months, Winter.
However, when I did my electrical trade training in the late 60s, early 70s, those Load Curves were exactly the same as they look in 2014, and as they look now. It was explained (when I did that trade training) that the power being generated could only equal the power being consumed, minus the smallest of percentages for losses. The power being generated was supplied by those ‘big’ power plants, because in those days they did not need to differentiate between types of power plants. The Load Curves I was shown during training for the trade look the same then as they do now.
Okay, this image from 2014.
Look first at the upper black line. That’s power being generated, the same as power being consumed.
It starts at Midnight, heads down to the low point around 4AM, rises to the morning peak, then falls across the afternoon, and then rises to an even higher point at the evening peak, around 6PM to 6.3PM, same every day of the year, just seen better with this cooler Months Load Curve image. It’s the same virtually every day, just those peaks change a little, but the up and down is the same. At no time is there a ….. LARGE change in that black line. It’s (relatively) smooth down, up, down, up, and then back down. There are no major instantaneous rises in power of a large power usage.
So, all that coal fire power needs to do is to follow that upper black line, the Load, hence Load Following.
And as you can see from that same image from 2014, coal fired power does just that.
At Midnight, it’s 16,200MW. At the low point, 4AM, its 13,400MW. At the breakfast peak, it’s 18,200MW. In the mid afternoon, it’s 16,600MW. At the evening peak, it’s 19,900MW, and then slowly back down, past Midnight again to the next early morning low.
It does this every day, all day.
That’s a ramping down of 6,400MW from the earlier evening peak, a ramping up of 4,800MW, a ramping down of 1,600MW, and then a ramping up of 3,300MW, and then back down.
So, coal fired power does indeed ramp up and down, all day every day. It does that slowly, at a regulated pace, because that’s all it HAS TO DO, follow the load. Those daily Load curves, the upper black line, vary so little on a daily basis, that it’s known exactly what they have to do.
Now, for comparison, this is the image at this link for the Load Curve from two days back. While that upper line looks a little different, (that difference is in the middle of the day, and the addition of rooftop solar power) note that coal fired power is still doing the same, ramping down and up, still following the load.
Coal fired power starts at Midnight at 16,000MW. At the 4AM low point, it’s 13,900MW. At the breakfast peak, it’s 17,500MW. In the mid afternoon, it’s 14,000MW. At the evening Peak, it’s 17,700MW, and then heads back toward the next 4AM low point.
So, it’s still ramping down and up, etc across the day.
While the numbers are basically similar, the change is that now coal fired power does not need to be as high in the mid afternoon, because the power it once delivered into that Residential sector is now being supplied, in part, by rooftop solar, but even then, the changes in coal fired power are still up in the region of 4,000MW, up and down.
I couldn’t show you the same day for each image, because we are still two Months away from that date this year, but I will add this. Coal fired power will be around that same peak on that day than it was seven years back.

Thanks for this post. It may come in handy soon. Let me relate for just a moment something I found by accident. The public service commission (PSC) in our state wondered if they should alter or clarify definitions of terms like “intermittant” or “dispatchable”. They asked for public comment about 9 months ago, and the comment period is long over. I discovered the comments online a few days ago.
The Sierra club weighed-in, and reading their commentary is simply bizarre. They have stated that because a coal fired plant cannot be ramped up and down quickly they should not be considered dispatchable. The pertinent part reads as follows.
I read this as an attempt to reverse the idea of dispatchability and define wind as more dispatchable than fossil fuel plants because it doesn’t have large startup costs. The particular target is coal. This issue is going to arise again I am sure.

Last night was another example of the failure of the unreliable, non dispatchable electricity supplies that are supposed to be our future.
At 6pm, solar delivered 0.1% of demand, wind 3.5%, coal 67% (that’s 16 GW, up from 12 GW at midday), gas 14% (up from 3% at midday), and hydro 15% (up from 4% at midday).
So despite over 12 GW of solar and 8 GW of wind nameplate capacity, they delivered a pathetic 0.85 GW when the evening peak demand occurred.

What Robber mentions above is what is meant by dispatchable power.
As those Load Curves are so stable in their shape, the grid controllers know what is coming and, more importantly, WHEN it is coming.
Those grid controllers know that coal fired power is ramping up already, as it always does. They also know that hydro is ramping up. again, as it always does.
All they need then to reach that evening peak is reliable deliverers of power, a set amount for when it is needed. Then, if the peak looks like being larger, then, again, they can call on those other reliable deliverers of power to add in their small amounts to top it up. Then it’s just a tweak here and there, adding more if needed, the smaller providers, and then, as the peak passes, those ones ‘at the top’ of the curve slowly drop off as power consumption falls, and as the evening wears on, then coal fired power also ramps back, ready to start all over again, at around 4AM.
That can be graphically shown with this image at this link.
This is the Load Curve for power generation/consumption for the same day as in the earlier Comments I made, 06May2021, just three days ago now.
It shows the layering on of generated power for when it is needed, at that evening peak, virtually the same time every day of the year, between 6PM and 6.30PM.
The Base upon which everything else is layered is coal fired power, the grey and the brownish colours shown here, the vast bulk of the generated power. Hydro is blue, natural gas is purple, and the smaller ones, ticked in legend under the graph are added as they are needed, and I have not included the other boxes, as they are too small to even show up on the graph
The layering of colours here is not indicative of WHEN they are added, just shown on the graph to best fit that graph.
You can see that they are added as needed for the main evening peak, and to a lesser extent, that morning peak, only needed for an hour or two at each peak.
That is what Dispatchable power is ….. the ability for a grid controller to have those plants ready when needed to deliver the required amount of power, when needed.
Or as I mentioned in the earlier Comment, the ability of a grid controller to be able to place a call and tell the person in control of that plant to ‘fire it up, we need the power now.’
None of those calls get placed to wind or solar power plants, and when was the last time an owner of a rooftop solar installation got a cal from the grid telling them to deliver more power.
Grid controllers know all of this.
All of the rest is just green bovine waste.

Okay, while we can see that coal fired power ramps on that daily basis, this image at this link shows the Hydro total for that same day, two days ago. Again you can see that hydro also follows the load, and while a smaller total generated power, it also ramps up and down, in a manner similar to coal fired power.
Now, if there is an occasion when there is a sudden change in power generation, it is usually on the rare occasion when a coal fired Unit goes off line, or, as is now more frequently happening, the sudden losses of 500MW to up to 1200MW in wind generation.
Two things happen then, pretty much at the moment it happens. Two phone calls are made. The first is to one of the two big hydro plants, Tumut Three, or Murray One and Two. The call tells them to ‘open up the races’ and start up one, two or more of the Hydro turbines. These are the fastest to come on line delivering power, and within five to ten minutes, they can be delivering 400MW to 1000MW. The second call is to a natural gas fired OCGT in the vicinity of the coal fired Unit or the wind plants, most of those in Victoria, or SouthAus. That call tells them to start up their turbine. It takes a little longer to fire these Units up, but they are the second fastest.
Usually, as soon as that OCGT is on line, then the hydro Units shut down again.
So those power losses, the large ones, 500MW or more, are quite readily covered.
As you can see from those upper black lines the rises and falls are relatively smooth in nature, so coal fired power only needs to ramp down and up slowly ….. because that’s all it needs to do.
Okay, if you still have that second image open, the coal fired one for two days ago, (06May2021) you’ll see the spikes on that upper black line, total power generation.
Those spikes are the addition of rooftop solar, layered onto the total generation.
While overall power generation is recorded (and shown) on a five minute basis, the nature of that Curve is relatively smooth.
However, with rooftop solar power, it is not recorded with accuracy, well, not really recorded at all. So all the AEMO does is to give its best guess on the total, and that is only recorded on a half hourly basis. That can be shown with this image, showing just Rooftop Solar Power, and as you can see, it ‘flat lines’ from one total till the next, half an hour later.
Now, when that rooftop solar total is layered onto the overall black line, it shows those spikes at each half hour mark, hence the appearance of the spiky nature of that Load Curve at the start and end of daily rooftop power generation.

Tony, I noticed a new (to me) word appeared the other day in an article on ‘unreliable’ power, as well as synchronous generation (steam and gas turbine driven) we now have asynchronous generation, a lot of energy is stored in the massive rotating (3000 rpm) turbine and rotor assemblies, but alas, inverters have no rotating inertia, they are just electronic assemblies, and this makes them vulnerable to frequency deviations which are now managed by fossil plants, so what are they going to do when the last fossil unit goes dark.

Rooftop solar, the simplest and best known inverter output are all tuned to run a little slower than 50 Hz but a synchronising pulse from developed from the grid mains catches it up that fraction of a second so it maintains perfect sync with the grid AS IT MUST. Left to their own device they would be close but “asynchronous”.
Remember your old CRT TV? Your horizontal and vertical sync worked just like that. In that case there were sync pulses included in the received signal. Your solar inverter manages without such pulses but electronics has advanced a long way and left me behind.

We see lots of people, especially those up from the city, rush into our local supermarket without bothering. They then are handling the food others want to buy in clean condition…yuk.

James Cook University in hot water over claims of fish fraud

An international scandal has erupted over claims of scientific fraud involving 22 papers linked to James Cook University’s prestigious Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies. The Australian Research Council, the US National Science Foundation and JCU have been asked to investigate the allegations detailed in an article published in Science Magazine on Friday. The article, which was supported by the international Science Fund for Investigative Reporting, is the culmination of years of research and contested claims over how fish behaviour is changed by rising levels of carbon dioxide in the oceans.
A team of researchers claim to have evidence of manipulation in publicly available raw data files for two papers, one published in Science, the other in Nature Climate Change, combined with remarkably large and “statistically impossible” effects from CO2 reported in many of the other papers.
The two scientists at the heart of the claims against them are Philip Munday from JCU and US biologist Danielle Dixson, who obtained her PhD under Professor Munday’s supervision.
The charge against their work is being marshalled by fish physiologist Timothy Clark of Deakin University in Geelong and Fredrik Jutfelt of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
According to Science, Professor Munday no longer works at JCU for reasons unrelated to the scandal and has called the allegations “abhorrent” and “slanderous”.
Professor Clark said he had initially considered the Munday findings to be “some of the most phenomenal findings in the whole discipline of biology”. But when he tried to replicate them he could not get the same results. There has been intense debate over whether the comparable tests had been adequately conducted.
Dr Munday had noted that 85 papers, with more than 180 co-authors from more than 90 institutions, have by now reported effects from elevated CO2. But of those 85 papers, 43 were co-authored by Dr Munday and studies that did report an effect were not blinded, so researchers knew which fish had been exposed to higher levels of CO2, opening the way for unconscious bias.
The Science article says that the reported effects of CO2 on fish behaviour and ecology have seemed to fade as the years passed.
Analysis of research shows the field is experiencing a strong “decline effect”, a phenomenon where, after dramatic initial findings, reported effects become smaller and smaller, the magazine said.
JCU has been at the centre of scandal over the treatment of former marine scientist Peter Ridd, who has repeatedly called for a rigorous process of quality assurance on research produced by Australia’s peak coral reef organisations.
Dr Ridd said the research council had a fiduciary duty to investigate because it was responsible for a $1bn a year in research funding.
“Most of the time you cannot demonstrate it is fraud, all you can do is say we tried to do the experiment again and eight out of eight times it didn’t work, but that is not proof,” he told The Weekend Australian. Dr Ridd said he believed that scientists questioning the fish behaviour work had got close to demonstrating fraud “but I think it doesn’t quite get there”.
“It could just be really, really sloppy work,” he said.
The ARC said allegations of wrongdoing were referred to the appropriate university for investigation.
A JCU spokesman said the allegations had been investigated under JCU’s Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research.
The investigation recommended the matter be dismissed and the findings communicated to the ARC.

Using bootstrapping it is possible to get 0 results out of 10000 attempts. It should be reported as p<0.00001 (I think that is the correct number of zeros), since you can't know the outcome if you add an order of magnitude more tests (ie 30-100,000)

About livestock and methane farts and global warming:
Grass grows by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere via photosynthesis.
Livestock eat the grass, digest it, convert it to sugars and use that to grow meat and fat, make manure and run about.
Some of the grass ends up being converted to methane during digestion which gets belched and farted out into the atmosphere, where it is soon degraded and converted into CO2, but far less CO2 than originally went into the grass. This atmospheric CO2 is soon snapped up by CO2 starved grass and plants, and eaten by livestock, and so on.
Nett result, there is less CO2 in the atmosphere, as some has been sequestered into meat and fat for us to eat, or hides and fibre for us to wear. Some of the “carbon” gets sequestered into the soil as manure.
Thus livestock ACTUALLY reduces atmospheric CO2, or GHGs, and thus has a beneficial effect on reducing global warming! (If any).

It is said that each Methane MOLECULE has 25 times the radiation absorption potential of a carbon dioxide molecule. This MAY be true for each molecule but as CO2 is 400 ppm in the atmosphere and CH4 is 2 ppm, or 200 times less than CO2, this larger capacity of Methane to absorb energy pales into insignificance in the atmosphere.
When a GHG molecule absorbs energy it increases its vibration. It has gone from its ground state to a vibrational excited state. Only specific amounts of energy can be absorbed, and only from specific frequencies for that molecule.
When radiation is absorbed by GHGs, there is a transition from a low energy state to a higher energy state, until the energy is reradiated in all directions and the energy state returns to normal.
Different molecular arrangements have different abilities to absorb Infrared Radiation (IR) frequencies and in different amounts. The most abundant gas molecules in the atmosphere, N2 and O2, are not able to absorb this IR energy and it passes through them and out into space.
Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and certain other gases absorb IR radiation from the Earth’s surface and re-emit shortly after, in all directions what has not been passed on to other molecules by collision (conduction).
The portion that is directed back towards the earth cannot cause an increase in temperature of the Earth as the Second Law of Thermodynamics states clearly that a cooler body cannot heat a warmer one, so the only effect is to retain, for a brief time, the IR absorbed before re-radiates and it finds its way eventually to outer space.
Methane in Earth’s atmosphere is naturally checked by methane’s reaction with a molecule known as the hydroxyl radical, a hydrogen-oxygen molecule formed when single oxygen atoms react with water vapour, and the methane is converted to CO2. The atmosphere, and more precisely the troposphere, is the largest sink for methane. Methane in the troposphere reacts with hydroxyl (OH) radicals, forming mainly water and carbon dioxide.
Some 90% of methane is ultimately destroyed, or oxidised, in the lower atmosphere when it reacts with hydroxyl radicals. The rest is destroyed in the higher atmosphere and in soils.
Consider the following diagram,

From this diagram it can be seen that Methane has absorption wavelengths at about 3 and 8 micron. Looking at the spectra for Water Vapour it can be seen that at both 3 and 8 micron water vapour is strongly absorbing and as there is so much more water than Methane in the atmosphere (4%, or 40,000 ppm versus 2 ppm) that there is precious little (or none) radiation left at those frequencies for Methane to cause an increase in absorption. Its effect is so small it is insignificant.
A similar effect occurs with CO2 at 15 micron where both H2O and CO2 have absorbed all the IR at that wavelength, and as H2O is 100 times more abundant than CO2 more CO2 has no effect.

Essentially the greenhouse theory is a laboratory phenomenon with primary relevance in two locations; the first 30 metres above ground level and then at about 11,000 metres.
If there was no IR pickup by so called greenhouse effect in that first 30 metres then the primary “pick up mechanism”; conduction, would take care of it. Then above 11 km the ggs release let go and the Earth is cooled.

The illusion of debate is a good title to prompt assessment of the Man Made Global Warming Meme.
There is only one truth that needs to be substantiated and that should be obvious, however the waters have been muddied so much using irrelevant factors that most of the public and all of the politicians just don’t know.
The basic concept of CAGW, put out by the warming community, is that CO2 is a heat trapping gas.
The whole scam is based on one mechanism: the idea that carbon dioxide is a heat trapping, “greenhouse” gas.
I have said that twice for a reason: it is the core concept on which CAGW stands or falls.
IT IS NOT A HEAT TRAPPING GAS and must resolve to equilibrate with gases surrounding it: Instantly.
It is known and accepted by all scientists with basic university degrees, there is no mechanism by which CO2 can adversely affect the atmospheric temperature.
Why has this point never been examined in court?
We should no longer debate the warmer deliberations because we need to go to the core of the issue: that CO2 cannot act in the way they claim.
This is the scientific truth of the matter.
There never was and never will be any human caused Global Warming.
We need to start attacking this point.
Real science is quite clear: CO2 is NOT a heat trapping gas any more than any other gas and cannot be responsible for changes in Earth’s atmospheric temperature.
All other debate around global warming is irrelevant, pointless and deceitful when this fact is ignored.
Why is this fact not used as the basis of a court action against all of the “misdirection” of public funds justified by association with the CAGW scam.
Warmer advocats have avoided facing the question on the basic mechanism by endlessly debating non issues and have given the Illusion of Debate while hiding from the
real science.

The trick is that “greenhouses” work best when sheeted with GLASS.
This is because glass allows the transmission of ultraviolet light which is essential to the photosynthesis in the enclose plants.
Why not “plastic panels? most, if not all suitable plastics, like poly-carbonates, for instance, have EXTREMELY poor transmission of UV. This was also illustrated to me in my younger days of making my own printed circuit boards. Glass covers over the sensitized board and art-wok: excellent results. A new piece of “perspex”? Zilch, nada, etc.
However, what makes a greenhouse “warm” is the subsequent Infra-Red light (HEAT)bouncing around inside because the longer wavelength is less transmissible back out through the glass.
This planet is not inside a glass bubble. The mass of the CO2 molecule, as compared to Nitrogen and Oxygen, means that almost all of it in the atmosphere is found closer to the surface.
This is part of the reason there is such a phenomena as the “tree-line”. Not many trees above the tree-line because it is “cold” and there is limited CO2 for photosynthesis.

Einstein pointed out that any excited CO2 molecule would make kinetic contact with about a thousand other molecules in the time it took for it to radiate.
That at ground level. The result is that nitrogen, oxygen (and argon) would all gain energy. That is the atmosphere would contain ALL gases at around the same temperature instead of the IPCC idea that “CO2 traps heat”, in which case we would have an atmosphere consisting of (non radiating) gases at 253K and CO2 at 590K (ignoring the effect of water vapour).
An idea, at the top of the troposphere the incoming solar radiation is around 27% infra-red. If CO2 is such a strong absorber/radiator of IR then it would absorb some of that and radiate it back into space. A rise in the level of CO2 would mean more radiation into space (and less IR warming the Earth) so CO2 has some cooling effect. Ties in with NASA’s claim that satellite measurements of the radiation frequencies of CO2 are rising.

Outsiders do occasionally have the odd moment but at least you get a diversity of opinion which is something that’s almost impossible to find on any other network .
For me being a Skeptic means listening to all sides then researching before forming an opinion and if I find research that counteracts my informed opinion and belief I’m open to change rather than be a rusted onto a belief as if it was an ideology.

I am hearing a lot of noise out of the US about inflation raising its head. We are not as badly off here I don’t think but we mostly follow the US.
I’ve got some capital but no income other than the pension so a classic defensive move into real estate [With 7% rental returns available here property is still fairly priced] is impossible, or at least raising a mortgage is.
Is the threat of inflation great enough to call in some IOUs from the kids, clean out the bank and broker accounts and buy for cash?

Is that net net? From our experience there are a lot of outgoings. And would it be residential, tourist, or commercial property? New?
Keeping your savings as cash in an inflationary world makes little sense – unless interest rates rise to keep pace. I don’t see either happening (significant inflation in Australia, or improved interest rates).
My concern would be putting all your savings into the one asset class. Is it possible to borrow say $100K or so, rather than clean out the bank account?

I can’t give any financial advice because that’s a closed shop industry and I ain’t in their club. I can throw a few random ideas into the air and you be the judge of what might be interesting.

That’s the RBA balance sheet, that big uptick in the past 12 months outweighs anything that happened in 2008 and 2009 … so that’s one thing to keep an eye on if you are worried about inflation in Australia. We are in uncharted waters at this point.
If you own your home and want to borrow money then a “Reverse Mortgage” is one option, there’s risks and fees of course, and you can’t borrow more than a fraction of the total value. High inflation could perhaps mean that the property value goes up faster than the interest on the loan … but there’s no guarantee of that.
As for what to invest in, bank interest sucks but keeping some money available “just in case” is helpful. The share market is easy, flexible and convenient but you need to know what you are doing … given the volatility of the current market timing is everything IMHO. Land only makes sense if you are buying a family home (no capital gains tax) or if you are a high income earner looking for negative gearing on an investment property.
