NATO Chief wonders about Solar Powered Battle Tanks

Is there a better badge to show the intellectual collapse of The West than the idea, from a NATO chief, that we should put solar panels on battlefield tanks? One hundred years from now, there will be a stage in the collapse of civilization called the “Solar powered battle tank” phase. An idea so radioactively stupid that any science writer’s first question is “is this satire?”

Apart from the whole power to weight ratio non-starter, there is the problem of night time and rainy-day warfare, camoflaging a shiny surface, and the general vulnerability of glass and electronics in a situation known to “have bullets”.

Solar powered battle tanks?

Oh the dilemma: how to camouflage solar panels and also collect sunlight?

Not only are these Solar Powered Tanks at risk of being immobilized by a stray shot, they could be struck down with a paint bomb.

Another day in Fall of the West

Nato chief suggests battle tanks with solar panels as militaries go green

Thomas Harding, National News

The Nato chief [Jens Stoltenberg] suggested that militaries should advance research into low-emitting vehicles because of the advantages they bring, at an online seminar titled New Ideas for Nato 2030.

“Nato should do its part to look into how we can reduce emissions from military operations,” he told the Chatham House event. “We know that heavy battle tanks or fighter jets and naval ships consume a lot of fossil fuel and emit greenhouse gases and therefore we have to look into how we can reduce those emissions by alternative fuels, solar panels or other ways of running our missions.”

The carbon emissions from a 60-tonne US Abrams main battle tank are calculated to be the equivalent of 10 Mercedes-Benz cars.

Jaime Carrasco: The Russians and Chinese would love that.

Nick DuCate: How woke do you need to be to suggest “zero-emissions warfare”?

Payal Hindu says “What next … “biodegradable nuclear weapons ?”

Jon Salero: The worlds first sail-powered aircraft carrier coming right up…

EEF [describes Jens Stoltenberg as] “A Labour Party Norwegian who lives in a country with no sunshine 1/3 of the year, geographically some of the most inimical to tank warfare and possesses some of the greatest oil reserves on earth.”  [Shows video of Putin dissolving into laughter].

Antonio Panardi: In a battle between my daughter’s kindergarten class and 2030 NATO forces, I’d probably put my money on the kindergarten.

To solve supply line issues, surely the answer is —  find more fossil fuels on your own land.

If the aim is a greener military, the answer is — a/ go nuclear (where possible), and b/ get a new commander in chief.

In Stoltenberg’s defense, (if that’s not abusing the word defense any more than he already has) he’s probably not talking about pure solar powered tanks but a kind of Hybrid Tank and while his aim is unmistakably “climate warfare” (how evil are those Mercedes Benz?), he argues that it would also reduce the need and risk of supply lines. Given that tank MPG is about half a mile per gallon on a country road, the sheer wattage required to move a 60 ton object makes the “savings” in the order of 0.2% of total requirements or so. It’s not clear the benefits are even measurable on the same scale as the costs of complexity, components, and failure rates.

Willis Eschenbach calculates:  1 gal. diesel = ~ 40 kWh. Solar panel, ~ 1 kWh per day. Solar panel ~ 17 sq. ft. You MIGHT fit four on an M1 tank. Plus 4 Tesla Powerwall batteries, 1/2 a ton. Every 10 days you could move your tank 0.6 miles … in summer.

Stoltenberg is not the only military man trying to go green. The Truman Centre in the US argues the military should not be so reliant on fossil fuels:

The U.S. military is the largest institutional consumer of fuel in the world, accounting for 2% of our nation’s petroleum use and 93% of the U.S. government’s energy use.  For every $10 rise in the price of oil, the Department of Defense must come up with an extra $1.3 billion annually, which must be diverted from training, maintenance, and other mission-essential items in the DoD budget.  That means our reliance on oil directly threatens the readiness of our troops.

Best way to reduce emissions in the military is to have such a big military in such a powerful economy that you never have to fight a war. Burn those fossil fuels!

A panel might be enough to keep the battery charged when it’s parked and the radio and electronics are being used. Tanks are high maintenance, if they are not mostly sitting, then they are rapidly wearing out (especially treads). If a call to action occurs, unplug and leave the panel behind.

I think F-35s are stupider. If the ‘stealth ‘ feature is defeated, it’s not a good fighter. “Ambient” radar has been demonstrated to spot them – radio waves from broadcast. Doctrine for US air power is to destroy radar first, they could destroy radio broadcasters, too. Buuut the enemy could do something like using multiple replaceable antennas (balloons and wire?) Attached to a hidden radio broadcast amplifier, and passive radar receivers.

F-35s may have been a good experimental thing to do.

Yes he’s a stupid civilian. He’s not a general – he’s a civilian, a politician, a minister of defence. Thats why the military constantly roll their eyes and say ‘why must we endure the babbling of moronic civilian morons who are put in charge’.
Alas the showing of civilian politicians over the last 20yrs starts to make you yearn for a common-sense military takeover. If we keep putting civilian idiots like Stoltenberg in charge the question has to be raised – ‘Surely military control is better than morons like this!’
I now understand why military coups occur – a yearning for intelligent adults to be in charge!
Dont blame the military -they have to suffer these fools!

With UN in charge, there could be a treaty where the carbon footprint of waring parties is limited. A bit like the 100kg fuel limit in F1 racers.

How about nuclear powered tanks – range essentially unlimited! Apparently the idea was scraped in the 50s but worth another look now. Need to get UN out of the way with regard to treaties on nuclear weapons. Maybe a nuclear power plant could be defined differently.

Does anyone remember Doctor Who and his early battles with the Daleks?

These awesome and sophisticated creatures could be disabled by stairs, throwing a rubber mat under them so there was no electrical connectivity and most of all throwing a jacket over the Daleks eye piece. This completely disoriented them

So in fights with solar tanks, watch the weather forecast for cloudy days, fight at night or have something ready to throw over the solar collector, which by definition will need to be in the sunniest and most exposed place. Or as batteries will have a range of a few miles let the tanks chase you for a few minutes.

Howe the Russians and Chinese must be laughing at us, and in the case of the latter probably selling us the batteries and solar panels in the first place.

    .
Do they have any idea of the energy involved in tank movement?

Solar panels will generate an average of some 200w / m2 over a good day, or about 20 kwh for the whole tank for a whole day.

A tank engine will use about 1,000 kw, operating for about 2 hours a day, or about 2,000 kwh required.

So – 20 kwh generated and 2,000 kwh required. What is wrong with this calculation?

An M1A2 Abrams main battle tank as used by the US and Australia produces 1500hp, 1120kW from a gas turbine engine and carries 504 US gallons or 420 imperial galllons or 1909 litres of fuel and weighs about 65 tons.

There is simply no way solar panels and batteries could provide that sort of power or energy storage.

It is the same disconnect from reality that leads Leftists to believe that you can replace proper power stations with a few windmills and batteries.

    Head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg:
After Copenhagen, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, commissioned a “High Level” advisory group to look into the issue of Climate Change Financing. It reported just before Cancun in 2010 and produced recommendations for funding the UN Green Climate Fund, seeking to raise $100 billion a year by 2020.

Co-Chairman was Jens Stoltenberg, then Prime Minister of Norway and Leader of the Norwegian Labour Party. The Norwegian Labour Party is a full member of the Socialist International (SI) and the Party of European Socialists (PES). Another former prime minister of Norway and a former vice-president of the Socialist International, Gro Harlem Brundtland, led the UN Commission on Sustainable Development which led to Agenda 21.

The UN High Level panel had as members, amongst others, Lord Nicholas Stern, George Soros and Christine Lagarde, former head of the IMF and now head of the European Central Bank.

The Advisory Group emphasized the importance of a carbon price in the range of US$20-US$25 per ton of CO2 equivalent in 2020 as a key element of reaching the US$100 billion per year. Carbon price varies greatly across the globe, shown here: https://www.i4ce.org/download/global-carbon-account-in-2020/ “Carbon prices as of March 1st, 2020, range from less than USD 1 (approximately EUR 1) to USD 123 (EUR 114) per ton of CO2e, However, more than 75% of emissions regulated by carbon pricing are still covered by a price below USD 10 (EUR 8).

Stern and Stiglitz recommended carbon prices between USD 40 and USD 80 per ton of CO2e by 2020, and between USD 50 and USD 100 per ton of CO2e by 2030. Carbon pricing schemes generated USD 48 billion (EUR 42 billion) in 2019, a slight increase compared with 2018 (USD 45 billion). 53% of the 2019 revenue stems from carbon taxes while the other 47% are generated by carbon quotas.”

Among the proposals put forward by the High Level UN panel were taxes on aviation fuel, airline passenger tickets, and “bunker fuel,” the heavy diesel fuel used by maritime shippers. Much of this has happened, but there must be a shortfall now with the virtual closure of the travel industry.

Carbon taxes were also proposed on carbon emissions in developed countries raised on a per-ton-emitted basis. The UN aim is for a global carbon tax fixed by them. Mega bucks for the global financiers, NGO’s, consultants, economists etc, unaffordable energy prices for the proles.

Perhaps given the enormous release of fossil fuel gases in wars, there should be a UN tax on war? They can take the view that war will be so expensive with carbon taxes that it will be unthinkable. Undeveloped countries including China, Pakistan, Iran, North Korea and Cuba will be exempt of course.

I am reminded of Rep. Hank Johnson querying an admiral about the Island of Guam capsizing if too many troops were stationed there. The admiral handled the situation with charm and dignity, addressing the brain-dead representative from Georgia as if he were a young child with no comprehension of the world around him. You see, we are not allowed to vote for many intelligent people for public office, as that would be a threat to the system. And those that do have an IQ above basement temperature are primarily there for themselves. Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg is a lifelong politician. What he says is what he is supposed to say at this moment in time. Tomorrow will be something different. Being a retired engineer (not in renewables), I can only imagine the size of the solar panel necessary to produce the 1120 Kwh necessary to move a 60 metric ton tank at 45 MPH (18” X 30” produces approx. 100 W). Not to mention the size of the battery required to support night operations. I’m sure the Russians and Chinese would love to see the west make such a change. If Mr. Stoltenberg was serious, he is a fool and should be removed from all positions of authority in NATO. He should then be required to attend basic physics classes to gain some understanding of the physical world in which he lives.

The answer is simple, the tank runs on electric motors electricity comes from the diesel powered generator towed behind the tank. That should be considered green. That is how it works now diesel,LPG and coal generate the electricity that charges the green car’s we have today don’t ya know.

Douglas Adams proposed the B Arc.
    Our ancestors used banishment.
    Hard times let Darwin Rule.
But we in our welfare enclaves, funded with borrowed money, coddle and protect the useless and clueless.
    We reward the indolent.
    Shower wealth upon wasters.
And then lament our growing indebtedness, weep over the ever growing problem of homelessness, parasitic loafers and general decline..

We will either reach peak stupid, for this cycle, and then reset .
Or we will reach for every more Babylonian levels of incompetence.

Any of us who has had the “experience” of sitting in on a government policy making meeting, will know exactly of what I speak.

So what is it going to be?
Do we have enough hard men with butterfly nets to capture the fools and bandits and banish them from our midst?

For decades the State Capitol and Federal Parliament have served as places of exile for our village idiots.
Was a great joke when the real power resided with the citizenry.

Now the Bureaus Rule and the all seeing hand of utter incompetence reaches into all business and private affairs.

The Dread Covid Experience,is a perfect example of what I describe.

If we had no government help, would this Wuhan Flu even be considered a pandemic?
Without the lies, confusion and propaganda spewed by our helpers, would any person be claiming a medical emergency?

And if we had no government..Would any of our rights as free people need defending,as they so desperately do now?

Solar Powered Tanks is a natural for these times.

The enemy? Singular or plural? well, when there are many – that cannot be counted – they are upon us; when there are fewer, there may be one = and is upon us.

      Does this sound familiar?

The basic concepts are perennial in their attraction to those who seek to dominate:

Create an uber class of those who are highly positioned in both industry and politics.
Cripple the middle class economically, so that they no longer have the power to make their own life decisions.
Offer dramatically increased dependency on the State as a relief from the economic hardship created by the state.
Remove freedoms, in trade for the promise of largesse from the State.
Institute a police state and totalitarian rule to ensure that the new paradigm will be lasting.
Once controls are fully implemented and the populace has become dependent on the new system, begin to remove the promised entitlements.

What I’ve found to be incomprehensible is the total dismissal of the human consequences following on from the “fight back” against the CV19 “pandemic”.

Government “action” and “necessary precautions” seem to be a case of making it appear that something useful is being done by the rulers.

Professor Carrol Quigley wrote about this in “The Evolution of Civilizations” (1961) He called it the “institutionalisation of the instruments of expansion”. Where a organisation becomes so large and fragmented that the objectives of key parts of the organisation are no longer in sync with the aims of the organisation itself. Top people then pursue their own agendas at the expense of the overall organisation. A good example was when a senior Australian Army officer in the equality section was calling for a end of the “warrior culture” in the Army because it wasn’t fair on women who wanted promotion to higher levels. Hmmm? That’s going to work our well! One of Quigley’s examples was the dominance of the cavalry officers in the higher ranks of various European armies well after cavalry had become obsolete, which stifled all strategic planning.

As I have always written, whatever happens with the climate, CO2 is in rapid worldwide equilibrium and we cannot affect CO2 levels even if we wanted to do so. Total fossil fuel CO2 would be under 5% as it is rapidly sucked into the ocean to maintain the ratio of 98:2.

It is common knowledge that 98% of all free CO2 is simply dissolved under pressure in the vast deep oceans which cover most of the planet. Any increase in atmospheric CO2 is due to a slight increase in water surface temperature, nothing more. Warming increases CO2. Simple basic science of dissolved gases.

And as an island continent of the 2% of the world’s population South of the Tropic of Capricorn, all our CO2 comes from overseas. So we tax ourselves and private companies buy foreign windmills and solar panels, sending at least $6Billion overseas for nothing. Non science Green masochism. Very profitable for some.

And we will defend ourselves eventually with French diesel submarines which are worse than the ones we already have. Perhaps they should be tidal powered? Or solar? Or wind? Who expects sails on a submarine? Only in Australia. And NATO.

Dont worry, it will happen here in Australia pretty soon. You have to remember all government departments have full time personnel working on ways to reduce their carbon footprint. In fact, Brett Sutton, the CMHO for Victoria (you know, Dan Andrews side kick )main job before COVID hit was to reduce the carbon footprint of Victorian hospitals. Not preparing the state for a pandemic such as putting together a decent contact tracing team. Nup – bolting as many solar panels to hospital roofs as he could find. There will be a couple of these type of people lurking around Department of Defence in Canberra doing similar things. In fact, upon reading Stoltenberg comments they would probably think ” Hey, you know what, that’s a good idea”.

Even the local councils have them. They are usually called Sustainability officers or similar. Really just virtue signalling officers. Usually they start first with solar panels on buildings etc, then attempt to replace some of the municipality vehicles with EV’s. Bike tracks of course. Their other obsession – having multiple rubbish/ recycle bins with the different colours. The latest being the purple lidded ones – which is glass. Solar lighting in parks is another.

By far the best idea for saving us all from spontaneous combustion was the driveway made from p.v. tiles. The only drawback was the unforeseen (by the warmy whiz kids who dreamt up this obvious non-idea) circumstance of vehicles actually driving on it which damaged the surface and the fact that vehicles parking on it cast too much shade to enable any solar collecting. Sheer genius. Reminds me of the old joke regarding the clairvoyant convention cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

      TdeF

My point is not radiation science like Dr. Christie’s story of radiation, absorption, reflection and more. The fact that CO2 has gone up 50% in a century is demonstrably nothing to do with human activity. You can measure fossil fuel CO2 with radioactive Carbon 14 and fossil fuel CO2 is tiny in the atmosphere, under 5%.

So there is no point building windmills, putting up solar panels and shutting down coal power generation and there are now 7 billion people on the planet, 6 billion more than a century ago with no provable effect on temperature. So why are Western democracies alone in punishing themselves? It’s a great United Nations scam and has nothing to do with science.

As for tiny Australia, with a whole third of the planet to ourselves, mainly water, it is beyond insane to aim for the fantasy of local ‘carbon neutrality’. Useless, pointless Green self flagellation, government run. It’s all about the $1.5Trillion a year and after 32 years of this, surely it’s obviously not true? Science is about matching predictions to fact and no prediction has been right.

Despite the above, as Rowan covered with a video, PM Morrison spoke against Great Reset while he was in the UK recently and spoke about defending sovereignty.

Once again we can see the split between the globalist socialist leftists and the real centre-right Liberal and National MPs.

Reset in short means stealing all the people’s personal assets, forcing us to be welfare dependent (living wage), renting a home and owning nothing …. and, according to the would be masters, we would be happier.

This is an extension of climate based hoax as the new grand solar minimum becomes more obvious, colder weather developing. And an attempt to capitalise on the restrictions, lockdowns and policing during the COVID-19 pandemic – “build back better”, “new Green deal”.

  • #
    Bruce

Then there is the actual use of the tank’s armament.

Those of us who have been too close to a Main Battle Tank when the main armament cuts loose, will be aware of the blast wave that emanates from the muzzle of that big gun. Any odds and ends not lashed securely to the tank hull or turret, flaps about or simply flies off.

Glass-covered solar panels would simply become expensive confetti.

Note also that when you see images of serious tanks in an actual area of operations, such vehicles are usually “slick”; no extraneous stuff on the outside of the vehicle. This usually indicates that the tank is either going into action post haste or has just come out of action.

And never mind the actual physics of power sources and power to weight ratios.

While on the subject of the sensitivity of “clean renewables” to external conditions, the Epoch Times has a story of imminent powere outages in Texas due to “unprecedented” cold weather. Seems that wind turbines are freezing up – who would have thunk it,

The president responded to requests for federal assistance from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Sen. Ted Cruz, and Sen. John Cornyn, ordering the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to supplement state and local response efforts. The emergency declaration covers all 254 counties in the state.

It came after the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the nonprofit organization that operates the state’s power grid, warned that it may have no choice but to impose rolling outages in the state on Monday and Tuesday as conditions deteriorate, and demand for electricity surges beyond the grid’s capacity.

Cruz said on Sunday that more than 23,000 Texans had already experienced a lost of power.

“We are experiencing record-breaking electric demand due to the extreme cold temperatures that have gripped Texas,” ERCOT CEO Bill Magness said in a press release on Sunday. “At the same time, we are dealing with higher-than-normal generation outages due to frozen wind turbines and limited natural gas supplies available to generating units. We are asking Texans to take some simple, safe steps to lower their energy use during this time.”

Half of them frozen? That’s amazing. On the other side, output has not dropped because the other half are spinning faster in the winter storm. Climate Change is funny like that. Warming freezes things but the freezing wind is so fierce it compensates. Exactly as predicted by warmists.

I wonder about the NATO chief. Bows and Arrows nest – at least they are environmentally friendly. May be he had just seen the film “The Mouse that Roared”

Obviously what the army needs is a Dinochrome Combat Unit.

From my days in high school cadets I still remember the essentials of camouflage; Size, shape, shadow, silhouette, SHINE, and movement. Even that cross-eyed magpie in whose hands our military so perilously rests, would know that putting glass on anything you wanted to conceal is the ultimate act of stupidity.
At least I think he would know that. But given that he’s never been in a combat role in his life he probably doesn’t. Ergo, idiotic suggestions like this would likely find fertile ground to in which to grow in Canberra.

I can imagine that NATO would be thoroughly in step with diversity and inclusion quotas, so I’m guessing the solar powered tank idea came from some purple and green haired 22 year old with a degree in enviro-lesbianism. Having employed her, they are now stuck with spending 600 million Euros on “exploring the concept” otherwise they might get accused of some ‘ism’. The brave NATO chiefs are terrified of that.

Interesting and frightening at the same time.

Maybe this will see an early start to the “Great Reset” in Texas with the installation of real power generation.

From cradle to grave wind turbines are the epitome of Peak Stupid.

Everything about them is the exact opposite of what is claimed by the “ethical environmentalists” and those who profit from their being.

One thing is for sure, they are of no benefit to the general public who are being treated appallingly by the politicians environmentalists and associated scammers.

The current situation demonstrates clearly the scientific truth of our situation in the universe it’s cold out there and rather than overheating, our greatest danger lies in not being able to hold on to our meagre daily ration of solar energy.

        Humanity astounds me.

I have read, so I do not know for sure, but, if you sum all the energy required to produce an industrial wind generator and compare that number to the total energy produced during the life of the generator, the energy required to make far exceeds the energy produced by the unit. Could not exists as an industry without taxpayers making up the difference.

Right on; and if you tried to design an engineering nightmare it would be hard to beat Wind Turbines.

            They fail at every checkpoint.

And a manufacturing economy based on expensive, unreliable renewables would be soundly beaten by those which simply use fossil fuels. You can have a green powered industrial economy – but it will be a mothballed failure in the real world.

    Jo,
Just wanted to let you know there is an unmitigated disaster going on in Texas at the moment due to these misguided environmental policies. Billions and Billions of taxpayer dollars had been spent over the last twenty years in Texas to build hundreds of thousands of huge windmills for power generation. There was no market for the power sho that used various techniques to force in in to the grid, rendering new coal fired plants and parts of existing ones redundant.
This was supposed to protect everyone from global warming. There is a massive freeze now in Texas and all the windmills are frozen. The conventional plants can’t keep up. Many can’t heat their homes. Many will die.

    FYI
    Matt

It shows you how fashions affect even the military. Transgender, Green tanks, peace in our time. And the tank in the photo is wonderfully Green.

It is not the job of the military to be Green eco sensitive, gender issues social activists avoiding trigger words and trying not to hurt feelings. Their job is to defend the country against violent deadly attack, not get into debates about alleged Climate Extinction.

The 50 million people killed in WWII were not killed by climate change. Nor the 100 million by the flu which ended WW1 by exclusively killing young men in the trenches. Man made Climate Extinction is utter fantasy. Bioweapons, chemical weapons, nerve gas, nuclear weapons are real, but let’s talk about coastal erosion and the Great Barrier Reef and how the farmers, cows and sheep need to be punished and culled.

The United Nations was created to end war and stop pandemics. At present it is the problem pushing Climate Extinction and the WHO created to prevent pandemics by coordinated rapid international action is an abject failure controlled now by the Chinese government while the United States and Europe are under siege by a single bioweapon and Green politicians demanding an end to representative democracy and energy independence.

And the newly EU independent UK is miles ahead in innoculating Britons against Wuhan Flu. And yes, with 65 cities in China over a million people, Wuhan is the site of the military Wuhan Viral Institute. Which is just a coincidence.

He has no idea what he is talking about. But he has just come back from the Davos gang’s latest jamboree with a fresh set of instructions from the Schwabenfuhrer.
