Map of Climate Shame reveals most of world doesn’t fight climate change

With the Bonn UN Climate Junket in its last days, the big leaders are coming in, and the ambit claims are coming out.

The Climate Action Network or CAN have published a glossy report that shows just what a failure Paris was. All the red countries are pretending to do something but scoring terribly. Grey countries are not even pretending, and New Zealand has been wiped off the map. (Seriously, something spooky happened in that last election.) Commiserations to Kiwi’s (UPDATE, and Alaskans).

Climate Map, Shame, EU, UN, Global Action.

Since India is getting the Green Guernsey  and the US  is getting a wrist slap, we know for sure this chart is not based on actual CO2 emission trends, or perhaps even any numbers.

The US, after all, has reduced emissions more than anywhere else while India is doubling it’s coal mining. Is that what we should aim for?

Australia, meanwhile, can never do enough, despite reducing our per capita emissions by a phenomenal 28% from 1990-2013. We sacrificed our electrical grids, have “implemented” an Emissions Trading Scheme and say we are aiming for the same obscenely tough 28% reduction that is the fashion despite being a heavy industrial quarry, with the lowest population density, biggest distances, and highest electricity costs in the world. To make it harder on ourselves the chief commodity we are disadvantaging happens to be our second largest export industry. Despite all this, CAN ranks Australia “Very low”.

The color red really means “squeeze more blood”.

A bit more tech info about that map:

Reduction in GHG emissions = had to stop making stuff and doing stuff due to global financial crisis.
Renewable energy = taxpayer-backed bankster money tipped into white elephants.
Climate policy = stuff you say while doing whatever (more likely believed if in Chinese or German).

Then ignore all the above, assign colour according to how you feel about a country on the day, make simplistic graphic and pass on to Guardian, Reuters and the rest of the fibbers.

The map colouring is based on a formula that translates to,
      Environmental – Non – Compliance – Has – Rallied – Outright – Market – Accomplishments.
      Or ENCHROMA

As a Kiwi I have to say that it perturbs me not at all that we have been left off the map. Obviously our emissions are so trifling as to not need mention.

      Impact or identity politics?
The absence of UN apparatchik NZ on this map must be an extremely distressing identity challenge for so many Leftists given their tireless devotion to the globalist cause.
Keep in mind that the UN has no convincing way of modelling the global impact of a phart from a tic on a gnats bottom that could be presented in a persuasive manner.

When people want to know where New Zealand is, I always ask them if they mean north or south New Zealand. If they say “North”, I point them in the general direction of Bay of Islands, and suggest they choose one, that is not already taken. If they say “South”, I send them down to Stewart Island, and tell them that the boat will be back again in a couple of weeks, or so, depending upon the weather.

That must be good advice. They never need to ask again.

Half of Alaska has been left off as well. No emissions in Alaska? The Alaska oil pipeline is obviously good. Kamchatka East has been lost also. Oh, those Russians! Hawaii is missing? But hey, it’s only important for measuring North Hemisphere CO2 levels from the Mauna Loa observatory. And the map is only concerned about emissions, oh… wait

The climate alarm gang has long since departed from reality. They no longer pretend to connect their charts to anything real. They deliver nothing of value but expect to keep being paid for doing it. Reality will hit when the governments run out of other peoples money. This will happen. When is another matter.

By eliminating the ability of the productive to be productive, the alarmists are destroying their source of both their income and the things that their income could buy. In effect, they are both killing and eating the goose that lays golden eggs. This results in no more gold and no more things the gold can buy. A mass extinction event follows. I suggest this is their ultimate goal.

      Zigmaster:

Yes, I notice that Morocco and Indonesia which are building coal fired power stations, like India, are rated above Australia where we are blowing them up. Even Poland with their black coal and Greece (building coal stations) are higher than us. And poor Ireland has installed enough wind turbines to cancel the benefit of actual emission reductions that their CCGTs would have brought.

It would seem that the ratings are based on the expectation of how much money they can collect from the gullible. No! that can’t be right with Julie B. splashing millions down the gurgler this week alone. Maybe they got a 6 year old to do the map; yes, definite signs of the mental age of a 6 year old.

From Jackson et al. (2017) Warning signs for stabilizing global CO2 emissions, Environmental Research Letters: Abstract .. “Many positive trends contributed to this unique hiatus, including reduced coal use in China and elsewhere.” That’s a very nice way to say that the main cause was reduced emissions in the U.S. Tactfully, they don’t mention rising emissions in Germany and China. Reporting at its best.

As Stalin used to say ( and this applies to any country ):

Sounds like the Delphy Principle technique for management decisions.

        1. Gather everybody in the room.
        2. Everybody fills in a questionnaire.
        3. The answers are gathered up and counted, all papers are anonymous.
        4. They tell you what the most popular outcomes were, therefore this is what we will be doing as a corporation.

It works because you believe you had a say in the outcome, but in reality, they tell you what the outcome was.
You can’t find out who actually answered those questions those ways. Everybody you ask answered differently. You can’t validate the answers. The whole thing is a con.

” The US was among the big movers in the ranking, sliding from 35th two years ago to just one slot above Australia this year.

accuracy was never the CAGW mob’s strength.

quite amazed to find the following at CAGW-infested Deutsche Welle:

15 Nov: Deutsche Welle: Felix Steiner: Opinion: The COP23 climate circus in Germany
Will the fate of the world be decided in foggy Bonn over the next two days? Of course not, DW’s Felix Steiner writes. The costs of putting on the UN’s climate summit are grossly out of proportion with the benefits.
The conference, now taking place for the 23rd time, seeks to do no less than save the world. At least that is the impression that many protagonists attempt to evoke. Therefore, every year around this time a number of evermore alarming scientific studies appear, highlighting catastrophic scenarios: The earth is warming faster than ever, storms are getting worse, polar ice caps are melting. And that is also why an ever greater number of island countries everywhere will soon disappear into the ocean…

The majority of the conference’s 25,000 attendees are not even involved in negotiations. Alongside journalists, most of those in attendance are from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) — environmental groups, scientists and businesses. Their presence is a sign of transparency, organizers say, and designed to facilitate exchange and networking. Though one could add that these NGO members’ attendance also helps the acquisition of jobs and new subsidies, with which the next catastrophe study can be financed.

The significance of this, the self-referential portion of the annual traveling climate circus, can be clearly measured by the fact that its portion of the enormous tent village constructed for the conference is much larger than that in which governments are negotiating…

It would also be in poor taste to ask about the carbon footprint left by the conference — especially as most of the electricity used to run Bonn’s charging stations is derived from the region’s lignite coal power plants. Such a query would only upset the mood of those inhabiting this taxpayer-funded parallel universe…

Just another quick reflection on why statistics are useless bunk without reflection and interpretation by mature human beings.

Remember that freaky September we had? Here on the NSW midcoast it really was hot and dry. Well, since then October’s mean max was lower than September’s…and now the first half of November is cooler by mean max than October! I’m assuming we’ll have some warm weather soon, otherwise all of November 2017 will be cooler than September 2017. That would be a lot for the mainstream media to avoid reporting. They’d need Harvey Weinstein to marry an under-age lamp post to distract us from that one.

All of this is meaningless because the wind, humidity and above all CLOUD factors have changed as we advance to summer. Most adults who use their loaf get it. Which is why the climatariat excludes adults who use their loaf and why they employ big babies instead. Gah-gah. Goo-goo.

‘That would be a lot for the mainstream media to avoid reporting.’

The electorate is very sensitive to unseasonal weather and at some point the MSM will have to discuss real climate change.

‘I’m assuming we’ll have some warm weather soon…’

Highly unlikely, the subtropical ridge has lost its intensity and the low pressure troughs are crashing through, so a cool wet summer appears to be on the cards for south east Australia.

My own feeling on the future weather patterns here in west Vic / SE Oz based on trying to make a living farming for close on 40 years despite what the weather could throw at us plus half a century flying gliders across western Victoria, is that we might be looking at weather patterns not dissimilar to the wet to very wet, cool to bloody cold in winter, 1950’s,60’s and first half of the 1970’s over the next two to three decades here in west Vic.

Which would tie in with the cool wet half of the roughly 60 year long cycle of the Pacific Decaal Oscillation [ PDO ] which has recently switched or is still switching into its cool wet La Nina dominate phase for us here in Australia.

This piece from James Delingpole’s latest missive, about the Bonn talkfest, is worth reading and thinking about

“The utter hypocrisy on display at Bonn is neatly summarised in this commentary by Rupert Darwall.

The story of this climate conference should be Germany’s epic climate fail. Already the German government has admitted that it will overshoot its 2020 emissions-reduction target by 12.5 percent (an estimate since raised to 25 percent) and that it is likely to miss its 2040 target by an even larger amount. Apart from a few isolated protesters outside the conference hall, you wouldn’t know that a few miles from Bonn, a forest is being dug up to make way for a lignite-coal mine. Thanks to Germany’s reliance on lignite and its low heat-energy content, German power-station emissions increased by 17.2 million metric tons between 1999 and 2012. Over the same period, American power-station emissions cut theirs by nearly ten times that amount — 170.1 million tons.

Would Germany be put in the climate stocks and pelted with rotting fruit? Not a bit of it. Greenpeace activists awarded Germany its “Fossil of the Day” award and promise a “thunderclap” when Angela Merkel speaks tomorrow. Climate conferences are exercises in organized hypocrisy, and this one was hardly going to turn on the biggest climate hypocrite of all. Instead it would be the United States. While delegates spent their time drafting mind-numbing rules to monitor the Paris agreement, the U.S. delegation provided the focus of the drama at a side meeting yesterday evening, in a climate version of George Orwell’s Two Minutes Hate. It had been preceded by Democratic governors Jay Inslee (Wash.) and Kate Brown (Ore.) denouncing President Trump for the crime of climate denialism, pledging to phase out coal — it helps being in the Pacific Northwest, where rainfall is plentiful, which makes hydropower a natural — and boost renewables. “

The ignorance of the officials and attendees at the United Nations Framework on Climate Change Conference [ UNFCCC ] also known as the COP 23 is quite astounding!

In their comphrehensive and colourful Global Map, as illustrated in Jo’s headline post, a map that claims to be representative of the ratings being given by the UN to global nations as a measure of how much they are doing to fight the dreaded “UN sponsored” Climate Change, the officialdom at the COP 23 have seen fit to leave off their map, the fifth largest continent on our planet , the continent of Antarctica.

This exclusion of Antarctica from the map and from the official UNFCCC. COP23 documentation is made even more obvious by the fact that during the summer periods, Antarctica has a population of near 5000 people with an additional couple of thousands of researchers and support staff operating in Antarctic off shore waters.

Contrast this with the inclusion by the COP 23 organisers in the conference proceedings of the Pacific Island nation of Niue which with a population of around 1600 and a land area of 261 sq kms compared to Antarctica’s 14 million sq kms.

The UN’s COP23 organisers are obviously being extremely bigoted in leaving out the Climate Change activity ratings for the worlds fifth largest continent and yet including an island nation that has about a third of that continent’s population and is only 0.002% of Antarctica’s area in size.

Of course the UN’s COP 23 organisers might not be as bigoted as I think seeing Antarctica has been very slowly cooling by a fraction of a degree for the last four or more decades.

Not a good situation to find yourself in as an official of a UN sponsored global conference on the extreme dangers of the UN sponsored “Climate Change” when that Climate Change is all about a warming, trending hot house, global catastrophe in the making and you have invited a major continent to your conference , a continent that is actually cooling and has been for decades.

Sigh! ; the terrible decisions that one has to make as an official of a major global conference.

Best to just leave the source of the conflict off the map and hope that nobody notices.

    50

    • #

Of course an alternative explanation might be that the UNFCCC’s COP 23 realised that with that 26.5 million cubic kilometres of ice mass locked up in the Antarctic ice sheets, to begin to meddle and fiddle with all that mass of ice might make the whole planet unstable and the planet might tip over if that ice mass on the bottom of the planet was interfered with by the UN and began to melt due to the UN sponsored “global warming / climate change” being exported down to Antarctica.

It wouldn’t look good for the UN if all those northern hemisphere nations now near the top of the planet that finance the UN were suddenly relegated without any reason to the bottom of the planet if the planet fell over because the UN started to fiddle with the temperatures down in the Antarctic and the ice cap then melted and all that land mass in the northern hemisphere made the planet top heavy and it toppled over.

With New Zealand, well it seems it sorta got permanently lost in the backwash, like a sock in a spin dryer, when Australia and NZ were detached from Antarctica sometime about Rereke’s second birthday back about a 100 million years ago.

From where NZ got into a volcanic huff and puff and paddled off into the far reaches of the southern Pacific Ocean on its own.

We expect that trend to continue over time as we help finance the transition to a low carbon economy”.
“Commonwealth Bank have today set a new standard for financial investment in Australia,” Greenpeace campaigner Jonathan Moylan said.
“By ruling out future investments in coal they have shown they are willing to literally put their money where their mouth is on fossil fuel investment.
“Westpac, ANZ, and National Australia Bank must immediately follow suit and show the rest of the world Australian financial institutions are serious about combating climate change and protecting coal affected communities.”

Moylan said the announcement shows Australia was now joining other world economies who are moving away from the most polluting of all fossil fuels.
“Around the world financial institutions are turning their backs on coal,” Moylan said.
“But we cannot be complacent and ignore the very real damage every mine and every coal-fired power plant is doing to the environment, the communities that surround them, and the planet.”

MY TAKE: COMMBANK THREW IN THE CLIMATE RUBBISH TO DIVERT ATTENTION FROM MORE SERIOUS MATTERS.

When the banks side against you then you are clearly in trouble. The banks are only interested in making profits for themselves. To hell with the rest.
The ‘rights and wrongs’ mean nothing to them.
They have no alegencies to anyone other than their shareholders and the rest of the corporate world.
Australia’s interests are clearly of less importance to these people than their own.

They have no alegencies to anyone other than their shareholders and the rest of the corporate world.

I think you overestimate by a wide margin the amount of concern that the banks have for the average shareholder.

        Now the bank executives “concern for the price” of their bank shares might be a very different matter as a part of the bonuses bank executives recieve each year whether they deserve or can justify in any way any bonuses or not, is a share issue;

So concern about the price of bank shares is an obvious trait of every senior bank executive.

Concern for the average household superannuant “bank share holder” on the other hand and the value of his / her shares? Nah! Not a snowballs chance in hell !!!

Those low status level average bank shareholders are just so much chop chop financial fodder used to give legitimacy to the prices of the shares the bank executives hold and the justification for their bonus share distrubution each year.

MSM loves elite CAGW protesters – they are all reporting this today, as if it is some noble exercise:

15 Nov: CBS: AP: Activists occupy coal power plant near climate summit
Police and company officials said activists had occupied conveyor belts and other equipment at a lignite-fired power station in western Germany, causing some disruption to the plant. Police said several people in masks occupied the facility Wednesday at Weisweiler, west of Bonn. News agency dpa reported that operator RWE said it switched off two of the four power generating units for lack of coal.

In Bonn itself, Greenpeace said 14 of its activists protested on a coal ship on the Rhine river, laying out a banner reading “Merkel’s Dirty Secret: Coal” as it passed the conference venue…
Energy companies warn that coal is needed to ensure a steady supply of energy for Europe’s biggest economy…

President Hilda Heine of the Marshall Islands, whose country risks being swallowed by the Pacific Ocean if global warming causes sea levels to keep rising, said a declaration that Germany will end its use of coal “would be a signal of hope for my country and for every vulnerable country around the world.”…

On a farm in northern China, they are planting a new crop: Nearly 200,000 solar panels in the heart of coal country.
In the south, China flipped the switch on the world’s largest floating solar installation — built on top of a lake created by an abandoned coal mine. Projects like these helped China double its solar capacity last year. It is now twice as big as the U.S. capacity…
    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bonn-climate-coal-power-trump-paris-summit/

Robinson Meyer is the Peter Hannam of The Atlantic, churning out CAGW scare stories almost daily but, in this novel-length piece, he does at least highlight how unrepresentative the professional CAGW protesters are:

3 Nov: The Atlantic: Robinson Meyer: A Major New U.S. Report Affirms: Climate Change Is Getting Worse
The National Climate Assessment arrives as President Trump is dismantling the most sweeping U.S. climate policy.
Climate change is real. It’s caused by greenhouse-gas pollution released by human industrial activity. Its consequences can already be felt across every region and coastline of the United States—and, unless we stop emitting greenhouse gases soon, those consequences will almost certainly get worse.
Those are the headline findings of the Climate Science Special Report, a sweeping and more than 800-page examination of the evidence…

Even in defeat, Waxman-Markey cost the party dearly. More than two dozen congressional Democrats who had supported the cap-and-trade bill lost in the 2010 midterm election…
Indeed, Democrats seemed to prevail only when they ran against the climate bill. Joe Manchin, then the Democratic governor of West Virginia, won a special election that year to serve in the Senate, but only after he ran an ad that showed him shooting a pile of paper with a rifle. “I sued EPA, and I’ll take dead aim at the cap-and-trade bill,” he said in the commercial, which received wide media coverage…

So Waxman-Markey failed. And then, freed from a unified campaign, American progressives took climate policy in two different directions…
Many activists came to see climate change as one more symptom of a dehumanized capitalism…
Chief among these new groups was 350.org, led by the author Bill McKibben. 350 opposed the Keystone XL pipeline…
In 2010, the Sierra Club also began to use environmental litigation and public pressure to shut down hundreds of coal-burning power plants as part of its Beyond Coal campaign…
This climate antagonism was one aspect of the left’s general resurgence during this period. Inspired in part by Naomi Klein’s 2014 book This Changes Everything, many activists came to see climate change as one more symptom of a dehumanized and extractive capitalism…

Democrats face at least three major problems in trying to formulate a climate policy.
First, the relationship between environmentalists and labor groups has disintegrated since 2009…
The antagonistic approach to pipelines and other fossil-fuel projects has also alienated labor…
Divorced from a unified legislative campaign—and the promise of federal funding—the new environmental antagonism can seem to run directly counter to worker interests…

The green-labor breakdown is the party’s biggest political obstacle.
***But its second problem is that Democratic voters still don’t care about climate change very much. Like other Americans, most of the party’s electorate experience it as a “low-intensity” issue. Though a majority of Americans in every state believe in climate change, very few people use climate policy to decide whom to vote for. Even Democrats say that a candidate’s proposed climate policy matters less when making a voting decision than his or her proposed policies about jobs, health care, the economy, education, income inequality, and terrorism…

Well who would have imagined last big Paris conference -estimated cost 1000 million dollars!!
The Conference held near Le Bourget private airport (biggest in Europe)at the time had little or no parking space left. All 4 and 5 star accommodation nearby and in Paris (24 km away) was booked out??? and heaven for bid so were the Michelin chef retaurants -hmm what an odd coincidence.
Now given that things are getting worse with certain countries (climate mitigation)being shamed by a primary school
coloring map of the world coming out of this latest Bonn conference ,I as a dedicated conference
goer would have called for something different next time -like a video conference.By the way I happened to check out the 4 and 5 star accommodation in and near Bonn now -blow me down
all nearly totally booked out but I suppose all conference goers (with 3 footprints one of them being
    a carbon) brought packed lunches.

15 Nov: Guardian: Global climate action must be gender equal
Women bear the heaviest brunt of global warming, and are less empowered to contribute to solutions. A new action plan agreed at the Bonn climate talks aims to reverse this inequality, writes Hilda Heine, Marshall Islands president
    by Hilda Heine
(Hilda Heine is president of the Marshall Islands)
The women of the Marshall Islands and the Pacific have been fighting colonialism and injustice for a long time…
For women, fighting for justice – including climate justice – can be downright dangerous…

This week at COP23, all governments must reach an agreement that will ensure enough climate ambition to stay below a global warming of 1.5C. To make sure that all climate action will include gender equality, the governments will agree on a Gender Action Plan (LINK). In the next two years, the plan will aim to increase the number of female climate decision-makers, train male and female policymakers on bringing gender equality into climate funding programmes, and engage grassroots and indigenous women’s organisations for local and global climate action.

15 Nov: NBC Think – Thought Experiment: Science proves kids are bad for Earth. Morality suggests we stop having them.
We need to stop pretending kids don’t have environmental and ethical consequences.
    by Travis Rieder
(Travis Rieder, Ph.D, is the Assistant Director for Education Initiatives, Director of the Master of Bioethics degree program and Research Scholar at the Berman Institute of Bioethics)
A startling and honestly distressing view is beginning to receive serious consideration in both academic and popular discussions of climate change ethics. According to this view, having a child is a major contributor to climate change. The logical takeaway here is that everyone on Earth ought to consider having fewer children.

Although culturally controversial, the scientific half of this position is fairly well-established. Several years ago, scientists showed (LINK) that having a child, especially for the world’s wealthy, is one of the worst things you can do for the environment…
The second, moral aspect of the view — that perhaps we ought to have fewer children — is also being taken seriously (LINK) in many circles. Indeed, I have written widely on the topic myself (LINK)…

In what follows, I will address some of the challenges to this idea. Because while I recognize that this is an uncomfortable discussion, I believe that the seriousness of climate change justifies uncomfortable conversations. In this case, that means that we need to stop pretending the decision to have children doesn’t have environmental and ethical consequences…

    CAT as crazy as CAN:

15 Nov: Climate Action Tracker: Improvement in warming outlook as India and China move ahead, but Paris Agreement gap still looms large
(LINKS) (Full briefing, press conference webcast, and additional resources)

Due mostly to the USA’s announced withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, there has been a significant deterioration in progress to limit expected warming. If all governments fully implemented their commitments made under the Paris Agreement (NDCs) the projected global temperature increase in 2100 would be 3.2°C above pre-industrial levels, up from last year’s 2.8°C, and largely due to the fact that the US is walking away from its 2025 target and long-term 2050 goal…

The CAT projects that global emissions are set to rise 9–13% between 2020–2030, due to projected emissions growth in countries such as Turkey, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. In 17 out of 32 countries analysed by the CAT, emissions will increase by more than 20% during this period.
The CAT assessment covers 32 countries, totalling around 80% of global GHG emissions…
    http://climateactiontracker.org/news/287/Improvement-in-warming-outlook-as-India-and-China-move-ahead-but-Paris-Agreement-gap-still-looms-large.html

    imagine that!

15 Nov: Phys.org: AFP: Marlowe Hood: Trump pullout from climate pact means even hotter world: report
US President Donald Trump’s pullout from the Paris Agreement will push up global temperatures nearly half a degree Celsius (0.9 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2100, according to a report released Wednesday at UN climate talks in Bonn.
If all countries—including the United States—honour carbon-cutting pledges under the 196-nation treaty, the world would see 2.8 C of global warming above pre-industrial levels, the Climate Action Tracker (CAT) research group had previously calculated…

But if the US abandons its goals for reducing greenhouse gases, set under the Barack Obama administration, the end-of-century thermometer will climb even further to 3.2 C, the report showed…

The annual analysis of the world’s top 32 carbon polluters—accounting for more than 80 percent of global emissions—also showed that China and India have accelerated the transition toward greener economies.
“China’s emissions growth has slowed dramatically: in the first decade of this century, its emissions grew by 110 percent, but between 2010 and 2015 growth slowed to only 16 percent,” the report said.
Beijing is on track to fulfil it Paris pledge—a peak in CO2 emissions by 2030—a full decade ahead of schedule.
At the same time, CAT rates China’s efforts as “highly insufficient,” saying its targets are “ripe for an update.”…

India has also stepped up its climate action, the CAT researchers said. Projected emissions in 2030 are about 20 percent less now than they were only a year ago, they reported.

“It is clear who the leaders are here: in the face of US inaction, China and India are stepping up,” said Bill Hare, a scientist at Climate Analytics, a non-profit research organisation in Berlin.

not everyone in Scotland is happy with CAGW policies:

13 Nov: HeraldScotland: Letter: The SNP’s latest fuel poverty strategy is doomed to failure
YOU outline yet another strategy to reduce fuel poverty by 2040 (“‘Bolder’ move on fuel poverty”, The Herald, November 9). It would appear that Holyrood has yet to learn any lessons from the failure by MSPs arising from their original pledge to the people of Scotland, and especially the 40 per cent of Scots living in fuel poverty, to eliminate such poverty by 2016.

It now appears there is to be a new 25-year strategy to attain the failed goal of 2016 yet, since the Housing Minister does not address the policies of his Environmental colleague, the revised strategy is doomed to fail before the consultation period is concluded.
Had the Housing Minister checked the fuel use of an average dual fuel consumer he would be aware that 3,500 units of electricity ( 14p per unit ) plus 21,500 units of gas ( 4p per unit ) results in an annual bill of £1,350.

However, as Holyrood has set out a goal to phase out the use of gas in Scotland over the next decade, by 2030 the annual energy bill will be 25,000 units of electricity which totals £3,500. That means an increase in energy bills of around 250 per cent, 10 years before the planned elimination of fuel poverty with the consequence of 75 per cent of Scots being dragged into the poverty trap.

In addition, if the planned elimination of gas includes the import of shale gas from the United States to Grangemouth, then the transfer of the work to Norway will have a major impact on the Scottish economy, hitting even more Scots with austerity.
    Ian Moir,
    79 Queen Street,
    Castle Douglas. …

(EXCERPT FROM SECOND LETTER) LED by the Greens, the SNP and most of our Holyrood representatives are basking in self-congratulations for having saved us and the climate from the perceived evils of fracking. This was done at the expense of potential jobs and economic benefit. It also largely ignored the expert advice which we taxpayers funded. Meanwhile we continue to use imported fracked gas anyway…ETC ETC

lol. just a game…indeed. probably the funniest thing I’ve read all week:

16 Nov: CarbonPulse: Just a game: China ETS to kick off with two years of simulated trade, no compliance obligations
China’s national emissions trading scheme is set to be a “game” when it starts in the coming months, with no real trades or compliance obligations during its first two years of operation, two sources close to the market’s design process said Wednesday.

16 Nov: Politico Morning Energy: POLITICO Pro Morning Energy and Environment, presented by ***GasNaturally: EU-China tensions — Merkel on coal — Macron for climate science
    By Sara Stefanini
With help from Anca Gurzu, Kalina Oroschakoff and Marion Solletty
BONN CHANCE! Two days to go in the COP23 climate summit here in Bonn. Political leaders rolled into town for speeches Wednesday afternoon, kicked off by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron. It all got started a little late, however, after Merkel kept Macron, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, Fijian Prime Minister and COP23 President Frank Bainimarama and U.N. Climate Change chief Patricia Espinosa waiting on stage for at least 15 minutes. Totally awkward.

the way Macron’s offer of funds was report on MSM this morning, you would think he’d offered to make up the billions for the Green Climate Fund! however, it’s just a ***pittance:

15 Nov: ClimateChangeNews: Macron: France will replace US funding for UN climate science
    By Arthur Neslen in Bonn
French president Emmanuel Macron sent a pulse of excitement racing through the Bonn climate summit with a speech seizing the mantle of climate leadership from the US.
In an address to a conference charged with writing the rules of the deal struck in Paris in 2015, Macron promised to replace the ***$2 million annual donation withdrawn by the US from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
The president also called for a border tax to protect EU industry against parties that do not share its climate goals, and promised efforts to haul EU carbon prices up to €30 per tonne…

Merkel, once dubbed the ‘climate chancellor’ – but also a stalwart defender of Germany’s car industry and power utilities – acknowledged that her country had “a long way yet to go” to meet its target of cutting emissions 40% by 2020.
But while it was “important to fulfil obligations we entered into”, she said, “social issues come to fore when we talk about coal. We have to think: is such a scheme economically viable and affordable? Even in a rich country like Germany, there are important conflicts in society that need to be solved and settled in a reliable, calm and collected manner.”

Annalena Barbock, an MP in the German Green Party’s negotiating team told Climate Home that Merkel’s speech would not help to unblock coalition talks that were currently “stuck” over the twin issues of climate goals and reduction in coal use.
“I don’t know if this was Merkel playing hardball or not but it was a true disappointment for me as a Green negotiator,” she said. “It was also a true disappointment for me as a climate politician and as a human being. She said at the beginning of her speech that climate change was a challenge to the destiny of humankind. If this is the answer, then we have to be very worried.”…

Speaking to Climate Home last week, Barry Worthington, director of the US Energy Association, said: “Germany doesn’t like to talk about it, but it is burning US coal for power consumption. Everyone wants to talk about renewables deployment but since World War II, its been buying and burning US coal and it continues to do so.”…
