2012 bloggies winner :-) Best Australian and New Zealand Blog!

thank you to everyone who nominated and voted and for me. Cheers! Jo

———————–

Update: Sorry for the brevity, it was sent from a smart-phone-and-dumb-keyboard, on this beach. Yes, it’s a much needed holiday. Great place to get the news! 2012 Bloggies

Thanks to the guest authors who contributed including Michael Hammer, Brice Bosnich, David Evans, Frank Lansner, Anton Lang (TonyfromOz), Geoffrey Sherrington, Ken Steward, Chris Gillham, Indur Goklany, and David Lappi, Anthony Watts, and Chrisopher Monckton and the moderators who work anonymously as volunteers without whom I could not keep the comments open.

Thanks of course to all the commenters, from whom I learn so much.

Merci!

Jo

PS: Skeptics are sweeping the floor in the bloggies. Make no mistake, the mainstream media makes this so easy for us by ignoring independent scientists with a cutting message. The truth is winning 🙂

CONGRATULATIONS to Watts UP for picking up two awards  — Best Science or Techonolgy  Blog, and  The LifeTime Achievement Award! And to Tallbloke’s Talkshop , Steven McIntyre (Climate Audit ),

          You reinforce my point beautifully.
It means nothing to you that you “have no sense of shame, no sense of humility, no manners, no grace. [snip].”

If you had any of the above qualities, my remarks wouldn’t be water off a ducks back to you.

Correction, you have one of the above qualities, you are an [snip].

I can see why you are attracted to the alarmist side. It’s the scamming, fraudulent, lying, ungracious, illmannered hubrists like Gleick that attract [snip]. Birds of a feather.

blimey, I don’t think it’s too late for you to take on Board Rhonda’s delightful philosophy:

If you haven’t already discovered the power of your own home, you are in for a delightful and beautiful shock. Come closer and let me whisper this in your ear, because if everyone knows this, it will cause a revolution. The work you do in your own home, by creating a warm and secure place for yourself and your family to live in, will enrich you and make you a different person. It saved me from a life of ridiculous spending and mindless acquisition, it slowed me down enough to allow me to see that there is beauty here, if I care to nurture and encourage it. When I took the time to change my attitude towards my home, it not only gave me the energy to do housework and the strength to make the physical changes so our home better suited our family, it changed me in the process. And it has been a beautiful change that I am grateful for every day.

Off you go and discover the “power” of your home; under the rock with the other bities.

    Joanne, congratulations.

No one deserves this more than this Weblog, and we can be thankful that Joanne can so effectively put before the Australian public something that they are not getting from anywhere else.

The other side of the debate.

Congratulations for Joanne are indeed deserved.

It may seem an obvious thing to say that these blogs went four for four, and then add in WUWT lifetime award, but if that of itself indicates one thing and one thing only, it’s that the average person out there is indeed looking for that alternate viewpoint that they are not getting from anywhere else.

    They get it from here.

This is confirmation that what Joanne is doing is indeed the right thing.

    Tony.

What? No teary-eyed acceptance speech thanking the director, the producer, the writers, the cast, the crew, and the caterer? Oh wait, you do all that too. 😀

There must be thousands of lurkers reading these pages who never say anything, but now their voice has been heard. With a bloggie now under your wing your traffic will be humming even more. Now for the plot twist; You didn’t just find the “hotspot of global warming”, you founded the hotspot of global warming! It’s joannenova.com.au.

    Congratulations.

And on a tangent I note this article published yesterday on Pravda Australia:

Lead researcher Professor Roger Davies says over the past 10 years clouds have lowered in altitude.

“About 30 to 40 metres, just depending on how you did it. And that’s actually a little bit more than would be needed to compensate for the effective increased CO2 over the same 10 years,” he said.

What?? That’s not toeing the doom-and-gloom party line! Does the ABC mean to convey that the climate has negative feedbacks that create a stable climate? Could this be light shining through a crack in the warmist consensus media? Could this even be a tacit admission of atmospheric defeat from the warmists arriving on the eve of your blogospheric victory? It’s a nice thought, eh?

      00

      • #
        Llew Jones

Ha Ha. I don’t think so. Alarmist scientists are not particularly bright or too “it’s getting hot” focused and probably hadn’t considered your logical conclusion but rather were fabricating an excuse for a decade or more of temperature data that simply wont play the IPCC game.

Congratulations Jo. That’s brilliant news and the honour so deserved. You gave so many of us hope, facts and a voice at a time when the MSM forces of darkness appeared overwhelming.

Posters here should also take a bow as they provide pathways to so many different sites where information is available to help anyone searching for the truth. You may well have more power to influence events than you realise. I know TonyfromOz will not mind me sharing the following with you to illustrate that point, from part of an email exchange we had.

“Now, as to Musselroe, thanks for linking that up everywhere. Every time a new proposal like this comes to light, I try to Post on it explaining that all is not as it seems. Having access to JoNova’s site especially is good, because those sets of eyes find these proposals that sneak in, so when you added your first comment, I went straight to work.

Oddly, that one Post has drawn more Comments than almost any other Post has ever had at our site. I’m also watching the direct links into that Post and they’re coming from everywhere, so that’s obviously from Comments you have left. Our Posts are also Syndicated as well, so they get hooked up in places I have no idea where, and that also draws more readers in. This one Post has consistently been on our list of top posts for the day since it was first posted.”

I’m not naive enough to believe the useless destructive Musselroe Bay wind plant can be stopped at this late stage, but so many more people round the world now know about it that it may help stop similar costly follies being imposed on communities elsewhere!

Never underestimate the Power of One when wonderful people like Jo put in the massive amount of time and commitment largely at their own expense to provide forums such as this, also making it possible for other knowledgable people like Tony to pick up on a subject and provide the expertise and dedication to take it further.

      MattB,

I hope that you have decided to inform your electorate that you are not a political “independent” but a deeply committed Green activist. Even at the lowly shire level of government Green policies — such as “strategic retreat” from beach front properties — is destroying people’s lives and whole communities. It’s important that you be honest about your beliefs with your constituency.

btw, congrats Jo. Bit late, I know, but I’ve been out beyond the black stump by and by.

    Congratulations Jo
A small compensation for long hours of dedicated effort, but timely and well deserved just the same. The four climate skeptic sites performing so well highlights the fact that many out there in the blogosphere do not believe the propaganda we are being fed in the guise of the pretense of enlightenment. Science having been hijacked by many unworthy of bearing its standard has attracted a large number of disenfranchised and disenchanted inquiring minds who realise that large swathes of the MSM have been co-opted into scamming the populace for political and/or financial gain. The sooner we can return to scientific first principles, restore some objectivity and promote curiosity and knowledge above polemic we will be much better off in terms of a progressive and properly functioning society.

the real environmentalists are beginning to catch on!

27 Feb: Cairns Post: Tarina White: Anger over ‘pay to pollute’ plan in Great Barrier Reef marine park
FAR Northern conservation and tourism groups are outraged the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park could become a “pay to pollute” dumping ground for millions of tonnes of potentially toxic dredge spoils from coal and gas port expansions.
The Federal Government has proposed the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority collect between $5 and $15 for each cubic metre of dredge spoil dumped into the marine park, starting on July 1.
With at least six major coal port developments either planned or under way along the Reef – including at Bathurst Bay north of Cooktown – it would equate to environmental vandalism of the World Heritage area, said Judy Lynne, executive director of peak recreational fishing body Sunfish Queensland.
“We see this as the start of further ‘paid pollution’ right along the eastern Queensland seaboard and affecting the whole inshore area of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage area,” she said.
“It betrays the trust that Australians have in the authority and the Federal Government to protect a world recognised icon which is not only a marine park and World Heritage Area but designated one of the natural wonders of the world,” Ms Lynne said.
Cairns-based charter fishing operator Daniel McCarthy was also outraged at the proposal.
“Does this mean it’s OK to pollute if we pay? That’s unacceptable,” said the owner of Big Fish Down Under…
*****The authority told The Weekend Australian on Saturday that the revenue from the proposed fee would contribute to long-term sustainable management of the Reef.
North Queensland Conservation Council marine campaigner Margaret Moorehouse said the park authority’s proposal was “a seriously bad joke”…

You should be able to get a screen reader to read any webpage out to you. As long as this blog is done with accessible Html, it should be possible to have the blog content read out to you. There are plenty of options – find someone who can help set you up. With a good screen reader and enlarged type, you should still be able to enjoy the internet.

If nothing else, I can make an audio of the various posts and email them if that would help.

Windows comes with a basic screen reader called Narrator. Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar activates Narrator to read the content of the active window. Ctrl+Alt+Spacebar reads the selected text. Ctrl stops Narrator.

Mac OSX has one too, but I don’t have a Mac running to check how it works at the moment.

      Mark D.

      S. McCulloch, as the others have noted, later versions of Windows has text to speech ability built in. Besides those options, there are free services you can go to on the web. You can cut and paste the text from any page and the service computer will read it (audio) for you. Just search Google for “text to speech”.

Crikey, the Drum, Skeptical Science … all must be thinking to themselves “why do my supporters not vote for me?”. There are two possible answers: 1) they’re not as popular; 2) their supporters didn’t know they were nominated (were they?) and 3) it’s a popularity contest, it doesn’t matter.

Did I say “two possible answers”? Well, in the world of climate science not being able to count is no impediment to rectitude. I think the answer is “1”. Jo, you’re more of a zealot than ever I could be but it takes zealots to ensure that the playing field is level. I’m very glad you have this recognition and I credit you with applying my inherent skepticism to the realm of “climate science” (such as it is). Well done – have another couple of days lying on the beach!

Say, I know this is off topic, but gee what would it be if there wasn’t Tony to take us away from the main thrust of the topic at hand.

Bob Dylan is very careful about his own songs on You Tube.

I have a regular Sunday Music series at the site I contribute at.

I’ve always been a huge Dylan fan, and I wanted to do a series on Dylan, but his clips at You Tube sung by him are few and far between, something he does not allow.

So, what I had to do was to create a series on Dylan, only all his big songs that were covered by all those famous acts over the years.

A couple of the links are broken, but that’s understandable, as the series is almost two years old, and some clips have been chased down and deleted.

That series is at the following link, and again, sorry for so shamelessly linking into my own Posts.

Sunday Music – The Bob Dylan Series

      Tony.

Like many other visitors to this site, I have had to protect my professional identity in order to participate. Joanne could have had a much nicer life earning big dollars doing something safer; it takes people of rare courage to volunteer to be an outcast to overturn a broken system. Because the warmists’ war against sceptics is mostly political and ideological, they just can’t conceive that people would take on the establishment as a matter of principle; that there are no secret oil wells or gold bricks, just a ragtag volunteer army. As the Gleick case has recently shown, pissant foundations like Heartland have only pop-gun firepower compared with the billions behind the IPCC’s pseudo-scientific corruption. So, from someone also in the truth business, heartfelt thanks, Jo, for volunteering to do this. That it has been necessary is a matter of professional shame for me.

That attitude is not one I admire. I find it disheartening that you do not follow your convictions to whatever end they meet. Rather you didn’t use the Kangaroo avatar, could be equated with cowardice.

That attitude is not one I admire. I find it disheartening that you do not follow your convictions to whatever end they meet. Rather you didn’t use the Kangaroo avatar, could be equated with cowardice.

How dare you make that judgement Markus.

You don’t know Toms circumstances, you don’t know the circumstances of any other blogger who chooses to be anon.
You may feel it’s OK for you to risk the welfare of your family in order to chase a PERSONAL ideology, but others don’t need to feel the same.

It would behove you well to judge each post and comment on its merits, not on who makes them.

In case it escaped your attention, just because a blogger appears to have a real name (John Smith, Jane Jones etc), it doesn’t guarantee that they are who they say they are. This is the nature of blogging.

You need to retract the reference to cowardice.

Come on , Give it a break Markus.

Some people work in very dicey situations. If you really want to show your stuff here’s a challenge.

See if you can single-handedly change the behaviour of everybody in Australia to a point where everybody is able to see real injustice wherever it is and act on it.

Problem at the moment there are “groups” and each group has a different definition of justice so we cant rely on that.

This blogg might seem to be about CO2 but it’s really about money.

In the case of Tom its about the money he might not get if he gets moved out of his work!

But through being a regular visitor to your site has reinforced my belief that the great global warming scare is just that – a scare. This find I’ve got to share with you – some oik called James Garvey, writing in defense of Gleick. It turns out Mr. Garvey is Secretary of the Royal Institute of Philosophy and author of “The Ethics of Climate Change”. Basically, he says it okay to lie if you’re a climate scientist.

      Pointman,

This has to be the best comment on that Guardian thread …

      Mr Garvey

I am a climate scientist at the Met Office Hadley Centre and also a lead author with the IPCC (NB. the opinions I express here are my own though – I am just telling you that for context).

I would ask you to refrain from bringing my profession into disrepute by advocating that we act unethically. We already have enough people accusing us, completely incorrectly, of being frauds, green / left-wing activists or government puppets. A rabble-rousing journalist such as yourself telling us that we should “fight dirty” does not help our reputation at all. “Fighting dirty” will never be justified no matter what tactics have been used to discredit us in the past.

Inflammatory remarks such as yours will only serve to further aggravate the so-called “climate wars”. People’s reputations are already being damaged, and we know that some climate scientists get highly distasteful and upsetting mail through no fault of their own. If people like you continue to stir things up further, it is only a matter of time before somebody actually gets hurt, or worse.

Please keep your advice to yourself, we can do without it thank you very much.

I knew from the moment of first clapping eyes on this blogg, there was something special about it. Quite apart from the Global Warming thing. Even with the Skeptical vote divided, between yours and Simon’s blogg, a skeptic site still won. No other category had that extra hurdle for skeptic bloggs & Now I’ve discovered Simon’s blogg too.

Despite the popularity of Norse Mythology trumping more established religions , I didn’t see AGW sites make even the Religious category.

Keep up the good work. You’re soon going to have to find a new topic to champion ‘though, as AGW slips off that Continental Shelf of Abject Derision , & into the deep.

There will no doubt be plenty more scams to unveil, as the MSM has forfeited it’s mantle as protector of truth & freedom.

    from rural publishing giant, Archant:

27 Feb: Eastern Daily Press: UK base for Global Carbon Project at UEA
The Global Carbon Project provides scientific data to both policy-makers and the public on the latest trends in CO2 emissions around the world. It already has offices in Australia, Japan, France, US, China and South Korea but is set to add another at the University of East Anglia.
Its UK office is located at the UEA-led Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and funded by the Natural Environment Research Council…
Corinne Le Quéré, co-chair of the Global Carbon Project and Tyndall Centre director, said: “Without accurate, up-to-date information, policy-makers lack the tools to plan effective future strategy in this vitally important field. Establishing the Global Carbon Project’s first UK office is a significant step in improving the quality of the data and reducing uncertainty in the science.”
The new office at UEA will pave the way for an International Carbon Office that would compile, analyse, report and archive global CO2 statistics, and monitor CO2 “sinks”.

how well would Ron Paul be polling, if he wasn’t virtually overlooked in the Debates, if he wasn’t ignored, or smeared, by the MSM, and if there wasn’t rampant FRAUD in the Republican caucuses?

why Climate Audit won the Canadian Bloggie, and not Suzuki:

23 Feb: David Suzuki: Documents strike at heart of denial machine
Now the tables have been turned on the libertarian “charitable” organization, which devotes its resources to questioning the reality of climate change and the dangers of secondhand tobacco smoke, among other issues.
Heartland is just one of many organizations dedicated to spreading doubt and confusion about legitimate science…
Recently, someone — since identified as climate scientist Peter Gleick — sent documents from the Heartland Institute’s board of directors’ January 17 meeting to a number of people and organizations, including Desmog Blog, a website devoted to exposing the spin around climate change denial. The documents confirm much of what we already knew about Heartland, although they provide interesting details about its connections and motives…
The papers also confirm that the institute’s primary mission is to discredit the established science of human-caused climate change…
If these groups were truly engaged in questioning the science, using valid scientific methods and principles, it wouldn’t be a problem. Science is strengthened through scrutiny and challenges; that’s how it works, and that’s what the peer-review process is about. But these organizations are engaged in secretive and dishonest lobbying and public-relations efforts aimed at stalling measures to protect the environment and health…
Three wrongs don’t make a right, but there are some differences. In the East Anglia case, the investigations turned on those who were hacked and ultimately proved that the climate scientists, although human, are engaged in sound and verifiable science and that they have been subjected to years of harassment and bullying for their work. The Heartland documents show that the organization is using its taxpayer-supported status to spread lies and misinformation.
It’s about time these merchants of doubt were exposed. It’s time to get back to real science as practised by scientists. We must get beyond the false debate about the reality of climate change and into the real debate about what to do about it.
    http://www.davidsuzuki.org/blogs/science-matters/2012/02/documents-strike-at-heart-of-denial-machine-documents-strike-at-heart-of-denial-/

      Lewandowsky is a propagandist.

Unfortunately, he is a very good propagandist.

But at the heart of his argument is the premise that the law (you know, the rules that underpin all of society) can always be laid aside for “moral” reasons.

The question then becomes, “Whose morals might they be?” Answer: “Why, those of a Professorial Fellow of Cognitive Science, of course!”

If we don’t have the law, we have anarchy. I know which I would prefer.

And you know, there is a name for people who believe that they can choose to ignore the rules of society and do what they want: Psychopaths.

On every occasion, Lewandowsky’s Nazi propaganda technique must emotionally associate discussion of climate science that rejects the IPCC’s evidence-poor theoretical hypothesis with the genocide of Jews:

“His actions have violated the confidentiality of a think tank but they have also given the public a glimpse into the inner workings of the climate denial machine … Revealing to the public the active, vicious, and well-funded campaign of denial that seeks to delay action against climate change likely constitutes a classic public good.”

This academic dullard apparently thinks constant repetition of propaganda that contradicts the popular rejection of alarmism will win new supporters. His strategy is as doomed as Hitler’s war machine.

Tom. I would suggest that, tempting as it may be, equating warmists with one of the most murderous regimes in history is neither accurate nor helpful to the debate, especially as their tactics have more in common with Marxist/Stalinist theory and practice.

I submitted a comment, supporting Gleick’s trivial bit of deception in his using the Denialists’s deceptive tactics against them. That comment has not yet appeared, so let’s try putting it another way.

Where does Dr Peter Gleick’s revelation that he lied to a conservative think tank to access climate change documents fit on a spectrum between deceiving the Nazis in order to defeat them, and Bernie Madoff’s deception of investors in order to defraud them?

Make no mistake, the fellows of the Heartland Institute are every bit as malevolent as the Nazis; if the Institute prevails, then the damage wrought upon the world will greatly exceed anything of which the Nazis even dreamed.

Therefore, there is no moral dilemma involved in unmasking the Heartland Institute; it is self-defence for the entire world.

Hi. I had a look at your reference. On this thread, you quote verbatim a letter from someone else as your own, supporting the green side. On a Green thread in ABC you are strongly sceptic in your many postings. Should you be taken seriously?

Markus, I can’t believe what I’m reading: you believe scepticism is an evil “as malevolent as the Nazis”. I’m afraid you are the problem, displaying all of the totalitarian extremism of the climate alarm movement, which has hijacked Australian public policy. Shameful. Scary.

Sorry GOM, but you couldn’t be more wrong.

You are talking about people who have already classified me – and you – as “mentally ill” and who want to “tattoo” us, herd us onto a “death train”, ship us to a “re-education camp”, and “gas” us.

You are talking about people who have already been responsible for the deaths of tens of millions with their ban on DDT, the deaths of millions more with their biofuels, and the current and growing number of deaths of millions more over the next few years from exposure and starvation as a natural and cyclical, predictable and predicted cooling period takes over for the next 25 to 30 years, and for which we are totally unprepared.

Compared to our current “greenies” and their desire and intention to reduce the population to less than a billion (ie kill off 6 billion people), Hitler and Stalin were paragons of virtue and compassion.

Stalin and Hitler combined only killed off about 50 million people. Our “greenies” have already far surpassed that, and have much bigger hopes and plans for the future.

            Grumpy Old Man

I believe that Hitler was responsible for an estimated 30,000,000 deaths. Stalin was responsible for at least 50,000,000 deaths in his reign of terror.
By comparing greenies to Stalin, I was being ironic. Sorry, should have made that clearer.

A life denied is a life taken. I would never equate Greenies with despots, that would be holding them in too high a regard.

I suspect we will not be seeing another blog post for the rest of the week. The Winner headline will probably have a tendency to hang around for a while. It would take a revelation of Mannian proportions to knock that headline off the top inside of a week. I’d say it’s a well-deserved break.

28 Feb: Daily Telegraph: AAP: Virgin Australia raises airfares due to carbon scheme
VIRGIN Australia is following the lead of Qantas and Jetstar by upping domestic airfares by up to $6 per flight due to the Federal Government’s carbon pricing scheme…
Separately, the airline said a $US3 ($2.80) surcharge would be added on all its codeshare flights to European Union countries from March 1.
While Virgin does not operate flights to Europe, the airline sold codeshare flights with Etihad Airways from Abu Dhabi to destinations that were part of the European Union’s emissions trading scheme.
“The surcharge is applicable on flights into and out of EU countries only,” Virgin said.
Earlier this month Qantas and Jetstar lifted fares on all flights in response to the carbon scheme and higher fuel costs.
International fares booked in Australia increased by as much as $60 and domestic fares up by between $3 and $6. All Jetstar domestic fares will increase by $10 from July 1.

And the sad thing is, it is true.

But what the article neglects to mention is that the phenomena is natural, and it is cyclic, and the Inuit even have legends and stories built around it. As the saying goes, half a truth is still half a lie.

This Post has been at Joanne’s site for four days now, and it has drawn just under 200 Comments.

Of note in all of those comments, I’d like to point out that our residents from the, er, ‘other side of the debate’ have not offered even a small note of congratulations.

Well, there was one of them, MattB, but read what he said, He just patted himself on the back thinking it was all up to him really, and even then did not congratulate the architect.

I would have expected even grudging congratulations from those guys, but no, just the (almost expected) total silence.

For guys so eager to jump in and stir the pot at virtually every other Post, they are remarkably conspicuous by their absence.

    Still, there is one advantage.

    No Ross James!

    Myrrh says:
    March 10, 2012 at 4:52 pm WUWT

.surely you’re the one who should be providing experimental proof?
    ______________________________

Exactly, Myrrh. If the IPCC wanted to attribute a warming property to radiation from a cooler atmosphere, then they should have proved its warming effect. I certainly can’t detect any warming in my backyard experiments, and nor would I expect to.

Prof Claes Johnson has now read my Radiated Energy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics prior to publication and has commented “Doug Cotton is one of the few people who have read and understood my analysis of blackbody radiation and radiative heat transfer and I fully endorse his essay.”

The fact that he said this is a sad reflection on the climate science community – demonstrating their reluctance to approach any contrary view with an open mind.

It’s not all that hard really, Radiation does not cause thermal energy to transfer from a cooler atmosphere to a warmer surface. All it can do is slow the radiative component of cooling. (Carbon dioxide molecules are not as effective as water vapour molecules in doing this because of their limited range of frequencies). However, evaporation and diffusion play just as great a part as radiation, and these processes can compensate for any slowing of the radiative cooling. All this is explained in detail (in about 6,600 words) available on line on Tuesday this week.

Guess where Doug Cotton published his “essay” – that pseudo-scientific publishing company Principia Scientific International, run by John O’Sullivan. You can find more n that subject over at Professor Judith Curry’s “Letter to the dragon slayers” thread (http://judithcurry.com/2011/10/15/letter-to-the-dragon-slayers/) but you need to read all of the comments carefully in order to properly understand what PSI is all about.

    Best regards, Pete Ridley
