114 Private Jets flying into Google Global Summer Camp Party thing

It’s so much fun saving the planet 114 private jets at a time

Sicily beach photo

The glitterati are descending on a ritzy Sicilian seaside resort this weekend to discuss how to save the world. As usual, a bit of wrecking-the-world on the way is fine if it’s “for a good cause” — meaning fame, status, and hot three day summer camps in an Italian resort.

It’s known as Google Camp — the place where famous VIP’s get some training and incentives not to stray off the Google Groupthink-Ranch:

The billionaire creators of Google have invited a who’s who of A-list names— including former President Barack ObamaPrince HarryLeonardo DiCaprio and Katy Perry — to the Sicilian seaside for a mega-party they’ve dubbed Google Camp.

The three-day event will focus on fighting climate change — though it’s unknown how much time the attendees will spend discussing their own effect on the environment, such as the scores of private jets they arrived in and the mega yachts many have been staying on.

It’s only going to cost Google $20 million or so. It’s a small investment in their pet team of lobbyists for Big Government.

Small governments, after all, like to break up monopolies, encourage competition and cut subsidies…

What starling would want to announce they were a climate denier and get crossed off this invitation list?

Related stories: Google is unbiased, impartial and just happens to be run entirely by Democrat votersPS: Anyone else noticed that Google used to call its renewables properties “investments” (eg $850b in RE>C, or these bird killers) but now it “purchases renewable energy” which leads to “$3 billion in investment”.  Seems a very strange kind of phrasing that implies Google just buy the green electrons (in theory). But small print on news stories like this one suggests Google is still buying the solar farm itself.”, Google will set up a 10-megawatt solar farm in Tainan City, Taiwan. ”

Back in 2014 Google was using tax credits and net metering to subsidize “investments”:

Most of Google’s renewable investments qualify for a federal investment tax credit that covers 30% of the cost. Its $450 million investment in rooftop solar-systems also benefits from state incentives such as “net-metering” laws. This hidden subsidy compensates ratepayers for power they remit to the grid at the retail rate, which can be three times as much as the wholesale price of electricity. Net-metering allows solar companies to charge higher rates to homeowners who lease their panels, and thus for investors like Google to reap larger profits.

So how much money has Google invested in renewables? Even Wikimedia has no information on this after 2014?

How deplorable, they are dishonest (oh, hi Vlad).

And it doesn’t make them any less dishonest that they are deplorable.

You can bet your life that if I had a private jet I would fly it and flip off this all animals are equal nonsense. After all, an animal that has no private jet cannot possibly be equal to one that does.

And then there’s Orwell. What will he think if I fly my own jet? I know. We’ll take away the private jets of all the pigs that have one. That ill make all he pigs equal again. What use has a pig for a private jet anyway?

Speaking of Orwell, I recently watched (yet again) the movie 1984 (1984 version) and you reminded me of the scene where O’Brien being a member of the Inner Party turned off the Big Brother telescreen and Winston Smith remarked “You can do that?” or words to that effect. So the so called elite today who now push the global warming/climate change hoax can do the same sort of thing. They are excluded from any restrictions that they want to enforce on the rest of us. Clearly it exposes the elite as complete hypocrites and fraudsters.

            G’day Roy,

Completely O/T, but since ‘turbine envy’ has been brought up, I always wanted to drive my own Airbus A-340-600. It has some of the most beautiful lines of any turbine airliner ever produced. But, it’s not my first love, and I’m admittedly fickle … … …

The very first time I ever saw a Boeing 727 (the -100 model was the first put into service), it knocked my socks off, and from then on, any time I had to fly somewhere, I specifically looked for a B-727, so infatuated with them was I.

Up until a few years ago, FedEx brought a B-727 (cargo conversion) into Casper, from the Memphis hub, and one of my thrills (even as a senior citizen) was to watch it depart each morning, out of Casper, going to Boise. Just after it left, my passengers would usually show up, and I’d climb into my Cessna 414, to do that day’s trip (I took our local hospital doctors/nurses to outreach clinics around the state; we often flew five trips per week).

While I grabbed me a handful of Energizers (engines), and pushed them up to “maximum enthusiasm”, I pretended I was applying take-off thrust to my “three” Pratt & Whitney JT-9D’s, calling out “V1”, and “V2”, and then “rotate” … … …

I may grow old, Roy, but I REFUSE to grow UP!!!!!!

            Regards,

            Vlad

              Hey there Vlad,
As a pilot (PPL) and glider pilot I too have enjoyed the history and life of the B727.
You’ll be aware, it is sometimes referred to as ‘the three holer’. Many years ago ‘Flight’ magazine (if I recollect accurately) wrote a wonderful article about it, mainly from the perspective of recruting low hour private pilots as second officers, and having them learn on the job in the right seat of a three holer. Pure magic and a sublime opportunity for many!

Then there’s the story of the B727 that simply and bizarrely vanished from Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport in Angola in Africa (where else!). One pilot took it one night and disappeared. This is the stuff of fables and conspiracy. The Professional Pilots Rumour Network (PPRuNe) have some very interesting stuff to read on the subject.

Good for you my friend. Myself, since I can no longer fly I graduated to flight simulators and took up a challenge I never tried before, the tail-dragger, specifically that classic among classics, the Piper J3 Cub.

For practical flying everything is tricycle gear but the venerable old J3 is still around daring me to try to land it in one piece. I probably broke it 30 times before I could put it on the ground without ground-looping. Crosswind takeoff and landing instruction starts any day now.

I may have an Airbus something or another in one of the simulators.

My all time favorite is the Boeing 707.

Talking flying, always a joy and a pleasure, Roy, thank you.
I did my tail-dragger rating in a J5F Auster (1946 vintage!) … two hands to the flap lever to the left of your head! To get the rating I was required to demonstrate a crossed-up landing on one front wheel, fly the aircraft in that configuration down the runway, take off, fly the circuit and repeat for the opposite side. Once mastered, all else became simple …. except the Piper Cub. In contrast to the fist around the stick of an Auster, the Cub required the thumb and forefinger finesse of the gifted. Let’s just say the plane wasn’t around long enough to master the moment, although when gliding, all my tows were from a Super Cub, so I got a fine view in formation on its derrière.
I was once granted (and logged) an hour in the airline B737 flight simulator at a major airport in the UK. I’m proud of that log entry. You could feel the nose wheel bumping over spaces between the concrete slabs of the apron when taxiing. All except the first landing, a “Cessna flare” in the words of the instructor, were fine. The “Cessna flare” technically broke the fuselage in two, not exactly the desired way to end a flight – essentially, chop the power at the fence and haul back, okay in a C-182 but doesn’t quite do it for a B737 that drops like a stone when the power is cut.

So, like Walter Mitty I live for that moment,
“Ladies and Gentlemen, is there a pilot aboard? Could you make yourself known to the crew.”

                Latus,

It was the J3 Cub years ago that first put the idea into young Roy Hogue’s mind that I might someday fly. It was summer vacation and I was about 13 or 14 and we had a neighbor who was an A&P mechanic. He asked me one day if I would like to go to work with him for the day. Would I ever. I was as curious a kid about nearly everything as you could find so I jumped at the chance.

That day I had nothing to do but explore around a hangar off on one corner of the airport and stay away from moving propellers. Like most FBOs this one offered introductory rides for a small charge and sure enough someone showed up and wanted to go up. There were a pair of canary yellow J3s sitting in front of the hangar, the only 2 I’ve ever seen in person. I watched as Mac and his passenger climbed aboard and they were gone only 15 minutes, maybe less. But I thought to myself: self, I bet you could learn to fly one of those. And that dream was there ever since.

The simulator has a multitude of problems and the real airplane is easier to fly any day. I know the difference in just one airplane I flew, the Cessna 172. Among other problems: no depth perception; no peripheral vision unless you have 3 monitors and the best joystick in the world can’t make up for the problem that you don’t have your hands on the controls and you get dummied up control forces fed back to you by some algorithm. Don’t even talk about needing to use the keyboard for some things.

The J3 is now classified by the FAA as an ultralight, meaning you don’t need a license to fly one. And there are so many of them around because they were built on a welded steel frame and they’re in big demand. A retired airline captain friend told me tat if you had a J3 with no damage and all it’s maintenance records intact it could sell for $80,000 or more very easily. Original price, under $1,000.

The J3 Cub is a classic among classics.

I got about an hour in a 727 simulator thanks to that same pilot friend. When I sat down in the left hand seat I intended to put the nose down and see what the simulator would do when it hit. It was too real and I couldn’t make myself do it.

Roy, You make some useful comments about Simulators. We are building a glider training simulator right now. We are trying to address some of the problems that you have identified.

                Peter,

My one and only sailplane flight with an instructor behind me doesn’t make me an expert on gliders but I did find but that in the air they are basically an engine out powered airplane. Is that about right? Anyway…

So on that premise the only good solution is to build a cockpit duplicating the sail plane, put real stick and rudder in it and see how realistic a display you can create for the view out in front or to the sides.

Your simulator must move realistically up to at least 60 degree bank and some pith extreme you will need to define (it should hand you the sensations of uncoordinated rudder and aileron). Control force feedback needs to be completely smooth without the cogging associated with any kind of motor that supplies the force. Then you will have a real simulator. Might do it for a few million if you have volunteer engineering.

In the U.S. approval by the FAA for flight training is the standard.

And now that I’ve ordered the impossible I’ll say good luck. But my one trip through a real FAA approved flight simulator tells me that is what it takes to make it too real to just be able to put the nose down to see what it’s gonna do when it goes splat. I find it only too easy to put the PC simulator nose down to see what will happen.

I wonder if you could find an off-the-shelf simulator rather than build one.

I hate to be a wet blanket on the 727 — I did many miles on them myself — but they had bad stall characteristics because of all that weight in the rear and to prevent trouble from creeping up on the captain the last (lowest) flap position was blocked off by order of the FAA. Otherwise they tended to stall tail end first which as you know leaves you no recovery. That locked them out of some runways they might otherwise have used and you could argue that you should not stall the airplane anyway.

Roy, I didn’t know that. I always thought the C of G limitations would have had to have been spot on for FAA / CAA aircraft certification. It would have had to have taken a very odd loaded configuration to have stalled tail first, suggesting C of G limits out of bounds aft. Having done a aerobatics rating I can’t imagine a tail heavy scenario, except in my wildest nightmares! But I do see what you mean, here, B727 Holy Moses!:

“The 727 was stable at very low speeds compared to other early jets, but some domestic carriers learned after review of various accidents that the 40-degree flaps setting could result in a higher-than-desired sink rate or a stall on final approach. These carriers’ Pilots’ Operation Handbooks disallowed using more than 30° of flaps on the 727, even going so far as installing plates on the flap lever slot to prevent selection of more than 30° of flaps.”

Funnily enough, using the max flap setting on a C-172, which from recollection is at 40deg. I always felt vaguely ill at ease. The vibration and uncommonly pitched down attitude with a high rate of sink tended to keep one on one’s mettle. Only to be used in quiet desperation with a firm eye on the ASI.

                50

              • #
                Roy Hogue

The 727 CG problem didn’t happen except at maximum flap extension. Flaps change the whole aerodynamic picture and can effectively shift the CG. If you stay away from the stall there was no problem.

I can remember getting checked out in a Cessna 150 and as I turned on final I put down full flaps (in spite of being told to hold off on full down). Oops, she just about wanted to stop flying and I had to drag it to the runway with a lot of added power. Those big wings and flaps that wont quit are not a part of the picture on the low wing designs I was used to flying.

Well, that’s why flight instructors were invented. But those Cessnas are a good airplane, tough and relatively forgiving of dunderhead pilots. The only thing I didn’t like is that big wing that came down blocking your view in the direction you’re turning.

At first glance I feel there is a couple of free lunches not included in the conversation. Oxygen is not a cheap process to extract from air, not to mention the capacity of the plant even to supply a 50kw unit. CO2 extraction at a superheated state can sheds its energy to other processes till it gets down to a manageable pressure and temperature for either sequestration or downstream use. Smells like a free lunch?

I read the same article Graham and then reviewed the bio of the writer, James Conca, self professed scientivist.
Unfortunately, there appears no immediate link to contact him and ask, by how much the ‘sequestered’ CO2 will change the global mean temperature anomaly, and what is the cost benefit analysis to the planet for this dT.
His truncated bio below indicates some serious longstanding SJW eco-pedigree. How any self-respecting scientist can hold that level of cognitive dissonance is beyond me, which is why I consider there is the possibility that he is more scientivist.

Ah, one of the ivory tower dwellers that need to get out and do some real work in the real world.

How many time must it be proven that CCS is totally a non viable system that only adds to the cost of power generated and they appear to have forgotten the power requirement of removing nitrogen from the air to give them oxygen to burn with the gas.

The Drayton cycle using high pressure CO2 as the working ‘fluid’ is slightly less efficient (59%) than Closed Cycle gas turbines (62%).
Using oxygen pushes up the cost.
What happens to the CO2 from combustion? It cannot stay in the closed cycle so the cost of sequestion must be added.

I have been puzzled at the passion for Climate Change and the vitriol of some of the singers, film stars, comedians and entertainers against Donald Trump and their support for no borders and the extreme generosity of other people, the American taxpayers.

However they also have one thing in common. They dropped out of high school. Enormous talent and drive but often from very broken families they attach themselves to causes and believe everything they are told. Perhaps massive overcompensation for little formal education. So Streisand, Cher, Midler and more are the voice of Hollywood and an echo chamber for the Democrats. Di Caprio seems to be more mature than the rest. Of course he is now being attacked for not having a female director since 1995. That is Hollywood turning on Leonardo.

Man Made Global Warming aka Climate Change is just one of their popular causes. The other is a vitriolic hatred of Donald Trump. Then you get all the ‘Woke’ movies with a female Thor, a lesbian Supergirl and even a female James Bond and ‘Metoo’ which is incredibly hypocritical for Hollywood with their earth shaking discovery in 2018 of the ‘casting couch’. As for open borders, even Cher has protested that they are inviting millions of aliens into LA while tens of thousands of existing people are sleeping rough in the city. Maybe she Woke up a little, but not for long.

They are actors posing as moralists. The politically active parties though are the endless Google, Facebook and Amazon executives from Silicon Valley. Even here in Australia we have the CEO of BHP Billiton lecturing the world on the damage he is doing to the environment with dreaded CO2. You could bottle the hypocrisy.

What we have now is the Woke MeToo Climate Change Global Warming LGBTIQ Open Borders Anti Racism Anti White AntiFA movement. Where would humanity be without moral posturing by the dropouts of Hollywood?

The big question over this latest climate junket will be not about the private jets/vehicles they use but will the woke people of the planet condemn their actions?
Because (and lets be absolutely clear) these are the same people that in their heart of hearts believe that any extra CO2 humans produce will destroy earths atmosphere and thus all life on it, yes those same people that have screamed abuse, made public slurs, encouraged violence, wanted to tattoo, destroyed careers, fixed elections, endangered/taken lives, suppressed liberties and generally act like petulant children, should be directing all this towards every last one of these ‘A listers’ and their reckless behaviour.

But instead we see and hear nothing, why?, because the very mindset that allows the above to occur is conditioned not to question their masters.

Seriously, they could all be doing something practical and useful like planting trees or picking up rubbish, faeces and needles in downtown LA, San Francisco, Portland or Seattle, of helping out the typhus ridden homeless in the same inner city areas. Instead, their fragile, brittle egos are ventilated by the MSM in an orgy of self-righteous and hedonistic addiction.

It’s disappointing to see how political bias has enabled otherwise smart people at Google to be so thoroughly fooled by the climate science deception perpetuated by the IPCC in its pursuit of the policy goals of the UNFCCC which are openly hostile to the economic system that enabled a company like Google to exist in the first place.

I’ve seen it over and over where even the smartest people can be fooled about an objective truth when the lie they’re being fed confirms a subjective political bias.

Dare I say, not one of them would be able to articulate the counter narrative. In other words, they would have suspended any critical thought or judgement in favour of acceptance and blending with the political groupthink.

It always surpises me that people who claim to be smart appear as vulnerable to confirmation bias and manipulation as those apparently less well endowed with critical thinking skills or nous (which are not necessarily dependent on education). There are plenty of street savvy, smart, hard nosed property developers who can handily spot a virtue signalling fraudster. There’s one in the WH right now, thank God.

Yes indeed MichaelinBrisbane, here in mid North,Sth Ozz,not only is there a lack of wind to drive the turbines that grace the landscape, there is little sun also. These conditions will persist for several days yet in the coldest part of the year.Hopefully, when the “big battery” near here is drained, there is some spare power in the Eastern states we could get by on.

A photo of an iceberg and the claim that the melting could raise the sea level by 0.5mm. There are a number of comments none I saw being favourable.
I commented that signs should be installed at all beaches warning short people not to enter the water.
Also, re the iceberg, that 2200 years after Archimedes it might be time for Climate Alarmists to catch up on some Science.

It was published but Al did the calculations and pointed out that the (impressive tonnage) ice melt would amount to an increase of 2.8 microns. (For those who don’t use microns regularly, he adds the helpful advice that would be one hundredth of the diameter of a human hair.

      80

    • #

A meandering jetstream (a global cooling signal) is causing the melt, but ….

‘Amid an ongoing heat wave, new data show the Greenland ice sheet is in the middle of its biggest melt season in recorded history. It’s the latest worrying signal climate change is accelerating far beyond the worst fears of even climate scientists.

‘The record-setting heat wave that sweltered northern Europe last week has moved north over the critically vulnerable Greenland ice sheet, triggering temperatures this week that are as much as 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than normal.’

      Rolling Stone

      20

    • #
      PeterPetrum

Don’t worry -according to the “experts” the melt will result in a 0.5mm rise. But someone pointed out that they got their maths wrong -it will be only 0.0012mm rise.

      60

      • #
        Graeme No.3

        PP:

Another pointed out that it meant a rise of 2.8 microns. But as the oceans isn’t level** how would we ever know.

** e.g. the sea level on the west coast of Panama is usually a metre higher than that on the East coast, but the difference can get greater, El niño etc. Also the Earth isn’t truly spherical, so the sea at the Equator can be kilometres more distant from the centre of the Earth than that in, say, Disko bay. And differences in geomagnetic strength also cause “lumps” in the ocean.

And for those who think things are getting worse I suggest you locate Roman ports in England and how close they are to being swamped by the rising sea level.

        50

        • #
          Graeme No.3

Meanwhile the inhabitants of London will be quaking in their boots about 0.0012mm rise in sea level, which will be really noticable in the Thames with its tidal range of 6 metres.
The Watergate (or Traitor’s gate) at the Tower of London will only take a very shallow draught boat at low tide. But that entrance is a recent addition, in 1285 A.D.

No banjos, nor squealing pigs, were hurt in tonight’s production, LD. There were some sweet, young, buxom wenches however, as is par for the course.

Don’t watch TV so haven’t a clue what the final product looks like (admittedly I youtubed a few Spartacus episodes where yours truly was slaughtering Romans and getting bawdy with buxom wenches, as is par for the course). This one’s a remake of that 70s/80s kids’ show, Legend of Monkey, which my neighbours in Maroochydore, QLD used to watch incessantly in the 80s – beer, AC/DC and Monkey – sheesh!

There’s another series but that’s a Jazz one set in the good old B/W days – as opposed to kids’ fantasy / special-fx nonsense – so not a lot of bluegrass in that neither. Perchance you are thinking of The Luminaries?

    Thunberg news.

Saint Greta has been seen wearing an ANTIFA T-shirt, but she says she only borrowed it from a friend. So now we know she has “friends” who support ANTIFA. She was unaware that it “can apparently to some be linked to a violent movement”. She is also donating to Extinction Rebellion all income from her upcoming song. That’ll be a ripper I’m sure. #1,000 on the Top 100. Put it on the Must Get list. The redeeming thing is that Greta is unlikely to be the next Beatles and the royalties will be underwhelming.

This girl is way beyond a joke now — she is fast becoming dangerous. More and more extreme groups are riding on her saintly coat tails. Those who pull this puppet’s strings and ply her daily with propaganda are becoming more transparent in their actions.

Sky UK had piece on this week which ended with emphasis on the fact US couldn’t exit Paris until the day after the 2020 Presidential election, and suggested the withdrawal would depend on Trump winning. gave the impression it was vital he loses.

my argument is, if Trump lost, he would still be in office until Jan 2021, so the withdrawal could go ahead. of course, there’s the other argument that, if a Democrat becomes President, they can reverse the withdrawal.

the Sky reporter below – btw this is not the piece I reference above:

31 Jul: Sky News Analysis: United Nations offers hope in the fight against climate change
The organisation’s secretary general Antonio Guterres has declared war on the issue, stating that the status quo is suicide.
By Hannah Thomas-Peter, climate change correspondent
I’ve only been climate change correspondent at Sky News for a few weeks and already the sand feels like an increasingly tempting place in which to bury my head.
Not a day goes by without an alarming headline.
    EXAMPLES

Or maybe the final straw for you is that Donald Trump, leader of one of the planet’s worst polluters, doesn’t even believe that human activity contributes significantly to global warming.
PIC CAPTION: Donald Trump could pull the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement completely if he wins in 2020.

If he wins in 2020 he’s going to fully withdraw the US from the Paris Climate Agreement…
It can be easy to give up.
But we can’t. We don’t have a choice. None at all. Tempting as it may be, the warming sand is not an option.
And so I find myself casting around for something to anchor hope to…
It’s there in the great groundswell of grassroots movements around the world demanding political action.
It is there in the increasing scalability and falling prices of renewable energy solutions.

It’s there in the US, believe it or not, where the Green New Deal – a collective mobilisation on a scale last seen in World War Two to transition the US off fossil fuels – has actually become a key policy pledge of many of the Democratic presidential candidates…
But most of all, and I never thought I would ever write this, I find hope in the United Nations…
There is no other organisation on Earth like the United Nations, and no challenge so global as the climate crisis…

The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the landmark report in 2018 that suggested we have 12 years to bring about the urgent and unprecedented action needed to limit warming to 1.5C.

31 Jul: Vice: How to Radicalize Your Parents on Climate Change
It’s possible to change someone’s mind on climate change—if you’re related to them.
by Shayla Love; illustrated by Cathryn Virginia
This year, on Easter Sunday, Robert Possnett was arrested in London during a protest with Extinction Rebellion, a group that uses nonviolent civil disobedience to raise awareness for climate change. It wasn’t the first time the 59-year-old father of three had been arrested for protesting, and it won’t be the last. His trouble with the law means he can’t travel to the U.S. since he has a criminal record, but he’s so committed to the cause that he doesn’t care. He has a court date in October and it’s likely he will go to jail.

“What else am I going to do with my life?” Possnett said. “This is the biggest fight we’ve ever had. It’s much bigger than World War II. There’s nothing else I can do with my life but to make as much noise and stink as possible.”…

In a recent study in Nature Climate Change (LINK), Danielle Lawson, a postdoctoral student at NC State University, and her colleagues found that putting middle-school children in a class about climate change could influence their parent’s views on the subject. The effects were the strongest on conservative fathers—significant because conservative white men have been previously shown to have the lowest levels of climate concern…

You KNOW that it will the climate alarmista glitterati that attend in their private jet.

Obarmy, DiCapio, Katie, little Harry,… all brain-numbed “believers”

You KNOW they are total HYPOCRITES.

I bet not one climate REALIST got invited.

Stop LYING to yourself, or do you have no shame or self-worth. !

“Stars there also include Harry Styles, Orlando Bloom, Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller, who arrived on their enormous $200 million yacht Eos, which has both sails and two 2,300-horsepower diesel engines.”

A LEFTIST ALARMISTA load of TOTAL HYPOCRITES !!

I bet they all have get-together to tell all us “plebs” how to live a low-carbon life-style. 😉

‘ … not necessarily the views of the individuals attending …’

The underlying paradigm is that CO2 causes global warming, none of those attending believe otherwise.

31 Jul: UK Sun: C02-OGLE Hypocrite eco-warriors including Leonardo DiCaprio and Harry Styles arrive at Google camp in private jets, superyachts and Maseratis
    by Grant Rollings
TREE-HUGGING celebrities arrived by private jet and superyachts to attend a Google Camp focused on climate change.
The hypocritical VIP guests were then ferried to the three-day event at an exclusive Italian resort in gas-guzzling Maseratis…
The tech giant’s seventh annual jolly in Sicily was attended by vocal green campaigners Leonardo DiCaprio, Stella McCartney and Katy Perry. Coldplay singer
Chris Martin, a supporter of The CarbonNeutral Company, performed at night amid brightly lit ruins…

An insider said: “I’ve never seen such a pampered bunch. Everything is laid on for them. It’s so extravagant.
“They just don’t seem to be aware that they’re the ones burning huge amounts of fossil fuels. They turn up with unnecessary entourages in helicopters or fast cars and then preach about saving the world.”…

You guys yakking aviation bring back memories of sitting in an Anson as a kid pretending I was on a bombing run. I think my first flight was probably in an Auster with my father before I was old enough to remember.

As a kid I would occasionally ride my bike over to the Broadmeadow Aerodrome in the middle of Newcastle then. It was O.K. to wander into the hangar and check out the aircraft.
One of them was a Dragon Rapide.
Later on a visit to New Guinea I flew in a DC3, Britain Norman Islander , Fokker Friendship and on a brief stop inland saw the most amazing STOL aircraft come in, it seemed to hang in the air, a “Helo” . Much later at a small local airshow there was a similar capability shown by a Feissler Storche, a replica only.
Then a very long time ago there were the hulks of two Catalinas to climb though, just dumped on the shore of lake Macquarie. The local Sabre tragedy etc.

      Enough.

1st overseas flight was in a DC3 to Norfolk Island aged 13 (winter school holiday family trip). My lifelong addiction to window-seats had begun (as well as a short-lived dream of becoming a pilot – money and maths, my two eternal shortcomings).

Still have the faded photos I took as we approached the island… sea, vast deep blue sea, then sheer vertical cliffs, grass runway, touchdown… was like landing on the summit of a volcano rearing up out of the Tasman Sea (precisely, Watson!). Next one was Fiji in a Fokker Friendship 3 years later (the taste for foreign travel was budding) then at 20 it was a one-way ticket to Brisbane in one of those fancy new jet airliners which offered free drinks and a smoking area.

Having painted advertising logos on friends’ commercial parapente wings in Queenstown in the 1990s, they’d often take me up for an early morning tandem-flight off Bob’s Peak – whoah freaking awesome. Another buddy flew the Drummond (?) aerobatic biplane and if he had a spare seat he’d throw me in up-front with the solo tourist and whoah! Feel the buzz… these days I’m happy carving down the sides of mountains on my (hardboot/racing) snowboard or cruising the streets on my electric skateboard – never too old to slide in style.

Living life to the full! Good memories!

I think you live where I was born. Lived at Frankton in the 50s. There’s a large photo of the old man in the coffee place in the airport and a street (Place) named after him near the airport.

His first flight to Norfolk Is was 14 May 1943 in DC3.

Did live for a while in the house on the corner of Frankton (SH6) & Hansen Rd (leading up to Lake Johnson) opposite the newish Events Centre on Joe O’Connell Drive. Arthur’s Point, Arrow Junction, Arrowtown were my favoured rental spots, far enough out of town (Queenstown) to ignore the rowdy drunken hoons yet close enough for work and/or socialising. A buddy’s had a place in Wilmot Ave for years – directly under the flight-path – nothing like a BBQ & beer as jets ROARRR overhead.

But that was years ago: after 2 decades living in the mountains (US/NZ) I needed to get back to sea level and warm(ish) saltwater again. Besides, I’d come to comprehend global cooling so the closer to the equator, the better. And as for Norfolk, I was there 30 years after your dad – probably flew in the same DC3.

Google, one of the most common words in the lexicon of the computer user, has turned out to be quite a menace to honest elections here in the states. When you are the major search engine in the world the opportunities you have to steer users to the point of view they want you to have is almost unstoppable.

According to a fired employee they are dedicated to seeing to it that Donald Trump loses in 2020. I can easily imagine the content that attracts such honest and worthy citizens as DeCaprio. Ugly stuff.

This next year will be something to remember either for a Trump victory or the election of one of those ridiculous Democrat presidential candidates.
