History making big freeze in the US

In parts of the US schools are closed, flights are cancelled, and USPS has even stopped deliveries. Frostbite can occur in ten minutes or less, and police stations have opened their doors to the homeless…

Once in a generation blast of cold weather:  From the BBC

Deadly cold weather has brought what meteorologists call a “once-in-a-generation” deep freeze to the US.

The extreme Arctic blasts, caused by a spinning pool of cold air known as the polar vortex, could bring wind chill temperatures as low as -53C (-64F).

Weather officials in the state of Iowa have warned people to “avoid taking deep breaths, and to minimise talking” if they go outside.

Chicago police say people are being robbed at gunpoint of their coats.

This may be the beast from the Sudden Stratospheric Warming that was raging a month or so ago high above the Arctic jet streams.

Forecasters are attributing this cold snap to a sudden warming above the North Pole, caused by a blast of hot air from Morocco last month.

Cities shutting down:

Grand Forks, North Dakota, has so far seen the lowest wind chill at -54C on Wednesday morning.

Freezing weather will chill 250 million Americans, and 90 million will experience -17C (0F) or colder temperatures.

“This could possibly be history-making,” said Ricky Castro, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Illinois.

Donald J. Trump‏ @realDonaldTrump Jan 28

In the beautiful Midwest, windchill temperatures are reaching minus 60 degrees, the coldest ever recorded. In coming days, expected to get even colder. People can’t last outside even for minutes. What the hell is going on with Global Waming? Please come back fast, we need you!

NOAA Tweeted a link to an article about record snowstorms in reply, or rather, as the BBC says “in what was widely interpreted as a rebuttal to the president.” In other words, if you find this convincing, it was a reply. If you know it’s irrelevant… nevermind.

Record Snowstorms, NOAA. Cartoon.

Oops. Did NOAA just imply that warm water leads to cold air?

Steve Goddard‏ @SteveSGoddard 16h16 hours ago

Replying to @NOAAClimate

This is complete nonsense. The record cold air has an extremely low dew point, meaning it contains very small amounts of moisture. It is sad that government agencies like @NOAA continue to misinform the public.

Steve Goddard‏ @SteveSGoddard 16h16 hours ago

Anyone who believes record cold air is coming from a warm melting Arctic, has no business discussing climate.

The thing is, super cold and record snowstorms are not necessarily the same thing. If only NOAA knew more about the climate…

Was there any climate model that predicted we would get record cold temperatures?

Best wishes to our US friends.

Hollywood melts after Donald Trump’s tweet

“In the beautiful Midwest, windchill temperatures are reaching minus 60 degrees, the coldest ever recorded. In coming days, expected to get even colder,” Trump said. “People can’t last outside even for minutes. What the hell is going on with Global Waming? Please come back fast, we need you!”

They even ridicule his typo. The problem is that Hollywood arguing record cold is actually warming flies in the face of reality. Only Hollywood knows that “the weather and the climate are different” when in fact the climate is made wholly and solely, 100% from the weather and a warmer climate means warmer weather.

A bit like Cook’s complete lack of self awareness when he attacks people’s view of his science as irrational, as if he was a real scientist instead of a commentator. Like Flannery and Gore, Cook assumes he understands Rational science because he has a view and could not possibly be wrong. It is the arrogance of ignorance.
Telling people cold is hot does sound quite mad. Most people would agree with Trump. Like the Moonies, Hollywood needs deprogramming.

Hollywood has turned into the front line entertainment industry for the globalists. This guy goes into great detail about some of the Satanic movies being released of late. https://www.youtube.com/user/jaydyer/videos
I don’t agree with everything he says but there is a lot of truth in his commentaries.

There is a lot of esoteric symbolism used in many movies. A single eye ( hand covering an eye ), the satanic salute ( the standard rock music salute with index and little fingers raised on a hand ), the chequered balck/white floors, etc etc. If you want to look, you will find it.

The BIG issue is what is coming next. Do we face a decade low temperature period due to low Sun activity or is our mag field going to go lower and the poles start moving around before a complete flip with a mini ice age?

A 12 year low will mean lower ocean temps in high northern latitudes, winter drought in southern Australia and high central Australian temps in summer with rapid transitions to very cold winters.

Do we have dams to catch the transition rainfall?

Just who is prepared to build some big power sources not dependent on wind and solar? We might need them.

We are going to know by mid Feb what to expect.

Add enough thermal contrast equator to pole, and , surprise !, you can get the circumpolar circulation to wobble about, and send the jet stream south in the hemisphere experiencing winter.

Alas for Jo’s readers, ( and investors in her spouse’s failed Global Cooling hedge fund, the perturbation is symmetrical, which is why Jo & Co. are sweltering even as they fib about the impact of anthropogenic climate change on the weather stats of the Great White North:

Russell, if we had global warming, there would be less contrast equator to pole, not more. You can’t have it both ways with your religion. Also, in order to have symmetry, as you say, the changes wouldn’t show up as more cold in the northern hemisphere and more heat in the southern. It would show up as more heat at BOTH poles, not just one, and more heat in both hemispheres, not just one. And in order to have more “hot days,” they would have to be numerically more of them, and they would have to be actually HOTTER than previous ones. Just as the “hot days” in the northern hemisphere reflect warmer nights due to urban growth, not to hotter high temperatures. Oddly, we seem to have lower high temperatures which suggests COOLING.

I am seriously puzzled. Has anyone actually explained how warming makes things colder? I mean an actual explanation, apart from the usual nonsense that warming somehow makes things more extreme, even the cold bits.

It’s bad enough with the total lack of evidence that the CO2 increase is man made, that increased CO2 makes the planet substantially warmer without having to accept that a warmer planet is also colder.

How can you deny something when no one has even tried to prove it? How can the climate be different from the weather when it is simply an average of the weather?

This is actually a good example of equilibrium. As the world gets hotter, it also gets cooler. So we have nothing to worry about when it comes to global warming, Gaia has solved the problem. Now let’s put all tat money to better use.

Well one good use for some of that money currently wasted on renewables is to re-educate the children and students of all Western schools and Universities about the truth of the CAGW hoax. That would be a good start. Trouble is who has the incentive to do it? Certainly no government appears to have it, not even Trump. So the hoax and the scam continue unabated.

Sad actually, regards American science. They can send men to the moon using slide rules for calculations, but the kiss of death is when they invented the *political* IPCC and put itn charge of ruining proper science.

Once enough scientists realized they had been fooled, it was too late for thier careers, and now they have to keep hold of the tail of the lion, lest it turn around and bite them……

I couldn’t agree more with you, Peter, but how many primary school teachers, let alone politicians, have the knowledge and gumption to challenge the AGW narrative? As chairman of governors of a Church of England primary school and local parish priest I always used the school Harvest Festival to extol the virtues of CO2.
As I mentioned in a previous post, I wish our politicians, instead of saying, “we are tackling climate change”, would ask to see the data which proves that we are likely to suffer from catastrophic global warming.

Most politicians aren’t spineless, they just know who pays for their election campaigns. If “the people” would stop allowing the MSM to make up their minds for them about politicians and started doing THEIR part in the governing process, you wouldn’t see quite so many “bought and paid for” politicians following their owners dictates. Until “the people” realize it is their duty to do due diligence while politicians run for office, you and I will continue to see those who “follow the money” follow it and use it to bullshine their way into office.

I did a google search because as a kid in the 50’s on a holiday farmstay the farmer had a kerosene fridge.
A small kerosene flame was all that drove the fridge.
I did not know at the time how it worked but the explanation follows.

      http://www.gas-fridge.com/files/39420015853e2595704dc7.pdf

In 1926 Albert Einstein and a former student, Leo Szilard, embarked on a venture to develop a safer
refrigerator since the electric refrigerators of the time were known to leak toxic gases through broken
seals. Such an incident of a German family killed by fumes caught the attention of Einstein and sparked
this project. Einstein insisted that a better refrigerator design must be possible.
Their goal was to design a device with no moving parts or mechanical motion and eliminate the wear
and tear factor. They used their knowledge of thermodynamics to produce an absorption refrigerator.
      This device would drive a
      combination of safer
      gases and liquids through
      three interconnected
      circuits. It required only a
small gas flame as a heat
      source and was totally
      sealed and safe. Some
      experts estimate the
      sealed system could last
      100 years.

Why can’t cold be produced by cold, lack of heat? Why does it have to be produced by heating somewhere, sometime else?

The desperation to blame the coldest weather ever experienced on Global Warming would have to be rated as total denial. In the US you get weather explanations and extreme abuse of the President from late night comedians, Cher and Jim Carrey. Irrational, political science.

In the real world cold is caused by lack of heat, not heating. Of course the whole disaster is caused by Donald Trump denial of man made Global Warming and exit from the Paris Treaty.

                * biological agent ( likely )
                * war ( unlikely – they want the infrastructure intact for their enjoyment )
                * Starvation ( unlikely )

So my money is on either a real ebola-like takedown ( messy ), or an faked “crisis”, but using mandantory tainted vaccines as the delivery vector….

But I’ve been thinking long and hard about exactly this question for some time. If the population decreases, the standard of living decreases also. I’ve come to the conclusion that it is impossible to maintain current living standards with a reduced population. The population supply money, need, and people to man the machines to build and maintain our current standard. Reduce the numbers, and the living standard is reduced also.

I could go into explanations, but I’ll keep it brief for now.

    “how warming makes things colder?”

    By ignoring reality.

The left feels as long as they can trick the masses into believing reality is not real and that their fantastical fantasies are real, they can get away with it. So far it seems to be working.

It is but a minor piffle, to them, that their trick works only as long as other people’s money exists to be confiscated and spent. After that? “I…I…I didn’t mean for this to happen. I say that is exactly what that meant to happen when at first they chose to evade reality and continued to do so until the bitter end.

The problem as I see it Sophocles is ownership of media businesses in which the plotters such as George Soros have significant shareholding and influence.

Several years ago, for example, Soros purchased shares to the value of several million Australian Dollars in Television Network Channel 9 Australia.

And another example that just came to mind: Around 2008 then Labor Prime Minister Rudd diverted his RAAF VIP 737 jet flight to Perth to Broome WA where he visited the Network Channel 7 Chairman Kerry Stokes at his Cable Beach seaside resort. The PM then went to Perth and returned to Canberra.

A while later the Labor Government announced a A$250 million a year reduction in broadcasting licensing fees for all media businesses to share. The cuts have saved them around $2.5 billion dollars to date.

At the same time ABC funding was increased, including extra for social media development. And a contract for broadcasting into Asia for the Government was snatched away from the selected best tenderer at the last minute and handed to ABC together with required extra funding.

You may know that ABC is subject to an Act of Parliament and that restricts governments from interfering in ABC operations, a Charter outlines the code of conduct required but that is no longer followed we believe. The Board of Directors and Chairman are government appointees and they appoint the Managing Director. The Board reports to the Minister for Communications who represents the shareholders, the people of Australia.

There are many examples of public service organisations being “directed” by politicians, BoM for example as covered here from time to time.

The noose around our collective necks slowly tightens as the cooperative of politicians who seem to out number the patriots allow the UN octopus to reach in and steal our sovereignty.

NASA Sees Climate Cooling Trend Thanks to Low Sun Activity

From the Hollyweird herd of liberal hotheads, those that reside in gated communities and those whose mansions are surrounded by walls with their trailing gaggle of useful idiots in the MSM, their collective output of hypocrisy has become a crescendissimo of white noise. It is as revealing as it is comedic and enjoyable.

The frenzied daily whipping by Western government met offices with the barbed canes of weather porn and climafiction always in the direction of heat is a beating to which many clearly are beyond habituated; addicted might be a better description. The moment their fix is threatened is precisely the moment they are doomed to unhinge. It is the predictable destination of the afflicted. It is when warming is cold, freedom is slavery, war is peace, ignorance is strength, happiness is acceptance. Orwell is killing himself with laughter and rotation in his grave.

Hollyweird chants death by heat or death by Trump in the same fetid exhalation they would better conserve if they actually believed their own rabid ranting. Of course they don’t.

Pecksniffian virtue signalling is their currency. It is well en route to total devaluation.

They will do it or nature will do it. Either way, the music has stopped, the game is up, the charade is over.

Some very important comment and leading questions by TdeF.

As he shows, the media and Hollywood, have something in common that I believe approaches arrogance and demonstrates a lack of concern for the real, working US population base who need truth, guidance and support in this difficult situation.

I wonder how much of their wealth Cher and Jim Carey and Leonardo DiCaprio have allocated to providing real lifesaving support to those trapped by the Cold?

Jo’s explanation of the warming explanation coming from the U.S. weather organizations is all we have.

Whether it’s correct or not, I have a strong suspicion that this type of cold spill into North America has happened in the past but perhaps not with the same lethal outcome.

Living here about 34° down from the equator and on the coast it is hard to imagine the danger and threat posed by this situation and we must hope that there is relief soon.

Warnings have been present in recent years when similar but less extreme weather has occurred and it looks like it might be time for Government to address the real issue, and it’s certainly not Global Warming.

What I find so worrying is the huge government edifice built around the CAGW meme which needs to be dismantled so that resources can be directed to the Cold problem.

I have little doubt that one day, hopefully, a long way in the future, New York Central park Will again be covered by an ice field 1500 metres deep as it was 25,000 years ago..

Until that time governments need to get real and face the current life threatening problem.

      Great Comment KK.
As someone that has personally lived through many Mid West USA winters (me). I can say YES these have happened before. The air mass may have dipped more south this time but the cold air masses have been here before. Usually January is good for two or so weeks of -20F to -30F real air temp not just wind chill.

Let me get all high and mighty here now! LAST NIGHT WAS -31F AND I NEED LOWEST COST HEAT TO SURVIVE! F.O. all the imaginary global warming fiends that are operating to cause higher cost WARM. We have been relatively fortunate so far that costs for WARM have not risen here yet nor have we suffered power outages due to grid stability issues. That said we have had numerous organized opposition to oil pipeline re-construction and lots of out of state invading protesters trying to shut down life.

THAT AFFECTS BOTH MY COST OF LIVING AND COST OF STAYING WARM!

If you can’t tell I’m getting close to my limit. I spent an hour shoveling snow against my modest house at 2:30am in -27F and 20 mile per hour wind LAST NIGHT to keep pipes from freezing.

      I waive my middle finger!
Fu*c Off you protesting globul warming fanatics It ain’t nearly warm enough on this earth yet.

        Thanks Mark,

My sister in law lives in Virginia, almost in Washington dc, and in past years has talked about the cold and the icy roads.

Such conditions are hard to imagine when our coastal temperatures rarely get near 0°C.

As a kid, sixty plus years ago, we would have maybe 10 days in a row with temperatures between 100 and 107°F.

Anything under 100 wasn’t worth worrying about: in the heat we just went to the beach in the morning and lay on the bed in the afternoon until the southerly buster arrived with a cool break from the Antarctic.

        Weather.

The real question is when the absurd explanations of record caused by warming become ridiculous. When audiences don’t find it amusing. The illogical desperation to pretend climate is nothing to do with the weather will be met with silence. Then anger. You can fool some of the people some of the time. Obviously falling temperatures will change everything.

On Sunday standing in an air conditioned service station pay area I commented that the temperature outside was pleasant. The attendant, 40 something I guess, replied that it keeps getting hotter every year. I disagreed with him and said above average summer temperatures are normal, and so our periods of drought. And added that my builder son tells people who work and travel in air conditioned surroundings should spend more time in the great outdoors to know what normal conditions are.

The attendant looked confused and replied that it is on the news every night.

      Texan Forever

Had you taken high school science courses generations ago you would have learned that Earth’s atmosphere is mostly water vapor. Also you would know that CO1 (auto exhaust) is the poison and CO2 (exhaled by humans and animals) is the good stuff and not a poison. All plants need CO2 to survive and thrive. Unfortunately, CO2 is only less than 1/3rd of one percent (0.01) of our atmosphere. Commercial greenhouses buy extra CO2 for their plants for higher yields. We need MORE C02, not less, to feed our expanding populations.

Astronomy 101 teaches us that the climate on Mars and the Earth run in parallel, regulated by the Sun’s 11-year activity cycles. Martian polar caps expand and contract in unison with those of the Earth. This is observable via telescope.

Global warming, AKA Climate Change, is a colossal scam but true believers are too embarrassed to admit they could possibly be wrong about anything due to their fragile egos. Note that crooked Al Gore built his mansion at sea level by the ocean, showing even he doesn’t believe in his “Inconvenient Truth.” … It’s all a scam.

This severe weather was forecast a month ago.

    http://www.severe-weather.eu/long-range-2/sudden-stratospheric-warming-underway/

What is the atmospheric mechanism causing stratospheric warming? Is CO2 implicated? Perhaps its that much larger greenhouse gas H2O? Does it have anything to do with the Quasi-biennial Oscillation?

Fitz will be here in a minute to set us straight.

      Hi El gordo.

It’s interesting that stratospheric warming is mentioned as a player in the current disturbance and we both seem interested in the mechanism at play.

I would make this observation; in air at STP there are approximately 1.227 kg of mass per cubic metre.

While the “temperature” rise denoted as stratospheric heating may be true, there’s another larger truth not in public view.

I think we both have the same question.

I read that Beeb article and the Moroccan hot air line struck me as particularly kindergarten. They did leave a link to a Met Office video which is essentially a “Polar Vortex explanation for dummies”.

If a Stratospheric Warming did bulge downwards and sort of bump the polar jet-stream southwards and steer surface air cells southwards too, it follows that air from somewhere-else would need to fill the polar void. Perhaps what they really meant was that air from further south than normal, ended up in the polar region but I doubt that air from 30ºN “pushed” polar air southwards. That sounds like carts causing horses to gallop to me. (Mind you, I have lots of photos of all sorts of wagons and carts making horses run faster and could devise a computer model to prove it).

I find Piers Corbyns version of events over at Weatheraction.com more plausible.

        Hi John,

One of the things I understand about the stratosphere is that while scientists may attribute it with an elevated temperature there is almost no mass there.

It’s also a long way from the Earth’s surface.

        KK

Good point KK, and I guess the ability of solar out-bursts to add 40ºC to stratospheric air molecules is partly down to the available solar energy being distributed amongst only a few molecules. The stratosphere is mostly space. Never-the-less the stratosphere does affect the troposphere and would appear to bump the polar jets out of their usual pattern.

Sometimes I think that our map of reality would benefit by dropping terms like “layers” because that implies some sort of distinct differentiation between one height and another. Even in the troposphere if you jump out of a plane at 10,000ft (3km) the air is thin, soft and slippery, offering very little resistance as you plummet at 120mph back to Earth. Pea-sized meteorites hurtle through the stratosphere almost without wind resistance so build up very high velocities and rapidly burn up as oxygen density increases lower down.

While I’ve only read the abstract of the AGU paper that EG referenced, the folks themselves seem to be saying that their observation period is too short so they resorted to a model to backup their claim. Once models were mentioned, I lost interest.

This dreaded man-made polar bear vortex is so YUGE it’s crossed the equator to drop snow on the hills above Hobart (which will burn on a catastrophic 18˚C max.) then – THEN! – this polar-koala-bear-vortex-from-Trump-via-Australia will ‘invade’ southern NZ with warm hot snow on the tops Friday night –

“Was there any climate model that predicted we would get record cold temperatures?”

If there isnt one, I pretty sure it can be cooked up pretty quickly and back dated and presented as the long lost model that completes the narrative.

There a comment in The Age yesterday from someone saying this cold was a “sharp dose of reality to Trump and othet climate deniers” They never explained how, so I assume they are just from the AGW causes everything school.

      Hi Yarpos, good question.

The story is that Morroco/Sahara desert got overheated, like really really hot man.

This hot parcel of air then did what all hot gases do: it expanded and rose and accelerated all the way to the North pole.

It couldn’t quite reach the pole because it encountered the dreaded Polar Vortex which it pushed of centre and part of that Polar Vortex spilled over onto continental USA.

Who knows what the reason really was.

Yes, it’s important to understand why, but this shouldn’t allow the authorities to escape blame for any failure to prepare for this cold event.

It has been sending signals for many years now, was preparation adequate?

Those signals were the ultimate climate model: measurable and observable reality.

Climate is usually relative to an area. Rockhampton is hot and dry. Mackey is hot and humid. Brisbane is mild with intermittent wet spells. etc.

Talking about a world climate is simply making a mess of things. You could compare planets, sure. But talking about an average planet temperature on a rocky core planet is just being silly. Perhaps an average temperature is relevant on a Jovian planet, not sure.

The “30 years” meme came about when they knew that they could start at or near the very bottom of the AMO cycle in the mid 1970s.

Of course Greg, each location will have its own climate, I’ve never said otherwise. there are even definitions for microclimates (mostly in biology). What I’m saying is that to measure that climate, you will need at least 30 years of records to take your average from, the 30 year definition is from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). As you say a world climate definition is not helpful to anyone on the surface of that world.

And I’m saying that climate is only useful at an area scale. There isn’t really a thing call global climate, at least not on this world. Too cold at the poles and too hot and humid in the middle.

It’s perhaps useful when comparing us to Venus and Jupiter.

And when we talk about climate on a global scale you have to include all the ifs, buts, and whens. But as I demonstrated, climate at a local or regional scale needs no caveats.

So to restate: Climate is more accurately a local thing, than a global thing.

And now to your other point. Yes 30 years has been adopted in the current debates. I understand before CAGW became a thing that the 30 year figure wasn’t fixed in stone.

My point is; that a period of time (lets say 30 years) isn’t the definition of a climate, but rather it is the dominant weather pattern at a given location.

It was only 10 years ago when they said ‘global warming would cause less snow’

BBC, 2008:” It must also be remembered that if global warming kicks in and becomes reality then snow and ice will be confined to the history books (and weather websites).”

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/gloucestershire/content/articles/2008/11/27/warm_winters_feature.shtml

… Now they say ‘the snow and ice is caused by global warming’

World-renowned climate scientist Dr. Michael Mann explains why the bitter cold and snowy conditions gripping the US are “an example of precisely the sort of extreme winter weather we expect because of [global warming]”

“World-renowned climate scientist Dr. Michael Mann ”

He failed a PhD in physics, so he went into measuring tree rings. Now he is a “Climate Scientist”.

There was a day when the only climate scientist was a meteorologist, not a man who measured temperature from tree rings. Of course that was before climate had no connection whatsoever with the weather and meteorologists were told they knew nothing about climate.

The dictionary has to be changed because Climate: “the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.”

Now Climate Scientists can be psychologists, mammologists, zoologists even socialists, communists, Al Gore or giant dead ancient kangaroo specialist Tim Flannery. You see Climate Science has nothing to do with the weather and all those years of training in meteorology mean nothing. Not a single Australian Climate Commissioner was a meteorologist or anything like one.

Freezing conditions are caused by excess heat. Obviously.

The record cold in the US has already lead to some deaths. Yet the global warming alarmists still want the West and only the West to stop burning fossil fuels like coal to provide a much needed supply of cheap and reliable power. A drastic reduction on the use of say coal by the West would lead to millions of deaths (unless we all switched to nuclear, which the alarmists are against). In any book that spells terrorism on the part of the alarmists.

Despite the vast outbreaks of cold over NA and Eurasia this winter, the Arctic area has not shown the ‘warm’ spikes seen in recent years, and this January (DMI 80N)has been persistently colder than recent years and almost on the long term average (1958-2002). the only news bulletin I heard last nite that mentioned the Big Freeze in the US was on BBC. it was the final item in the bulletin and said something like flights are cancelled, schools are closed, as Americans prepare for a Big Chill! that was it.

    BBC likes “big chill”:

22 Jan: BBC: Italian runner braves Siberia big chill
A policeman from Italy has run a race in one of the world’s coldest permanently-inhabited places, braving temperatures of -52 Celsius…
Paolo Venturini’s achievement may have captured the headlines around the world, but another runner from Moldova actually set a new local record by running further and in even more daunting conditions along the same route a few days earlier…

Dmitry Voloshin ran 50km (31 miles) at temperatures getting down to -60 Celsius, or -67 with the wind-chill factor, according to the news service of Siberia’s Sakha Republic…
Mr Voloshin, an experienced runner who was raising money for his Unfrozen cerebral palsy charity back home, told Ria Novosti that it was “the toughest experience of my sporting career”.
He noted in particular how hard it was to breathe: “It was like stepping out into the cosmos.”
The head of Tomtor council, Yekaterina Vinokurova, told RIA that Mr Voloshin had “set a record by covering the distance in six hours in ultra-low temperatures”…
Reporting by Jen Monaghan and Martin Morgan
    https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-46958385

    a better headline, BBC?

15 Jan: TASS: Frigid marathon: Runner covers 50 km distance in Siberia at minus 60 degrees Celsius
“On January 14, Dmitry Voloshin, an extreme athlete from Moldova, took part in a charity race in the world’s coldest place, the Oymyakonsky Ulus (district) of Yakutia, where temperatures sometimes plummet to minus 71 degrees Celsius (minus 95.8 degrees Fahrenheit). Dmitry covered a 50 km distance at minus 60 degrees Celsius. According to weather reports, it felt like minus 67 degrees Celsius (minus 88.6 degrees Fahrenheit),” the statement reads.

It took Voloshin six hours to cover the distance. “It was the hardest test of my career. It is like a spacewalk: it is freezing cold and there isn’t enough air. No equipment can protect you from such a deep freeze. I hope my face didn’t get frostbitten while running. Breathing was difficult, as there is very little oxygen in the air and my mask got filled with ice. This is where my free diving experience came in handy – I am used to holding my breath,” the athlete said, as cited in the statement.
The main goal of the charity project, which involved the running event, was to draw the public’s attention to the issue of childhood cerebral palsy and the need to provide assistance to children suffering from the disease

“Breathing was difficult, as there is very little oxygen in the air…” he said. No, it was the usual nineteen percent. The perception is to do with the lungs’ performance in perfusing low temperature air. Rule of thumb in chemistry classes was that reaction rate is halved for each ten degrees temperature fall. It’s anybody’s guess what temperature the air was when it hit his lung surfaces but the haemoglobin reaction would have been slowed accordingly.

CNN downplays(?) the bigger picture by focusing on the squall! lol.

30 Jan: CNN: Snow squalls bring near-whiteout conditions to Northeast
By Faith Karimi and Steve Almasy; CNN’s Eliott C. McLaughlin, Andrea Diaz, Marlena Baldacci, Dave Hennen, Joe Sutton and Dave Alsup contributed to this report
In a matter of minutes, visibility for people brave enough to go out onto streets in the Northeast deteriorated quickly Wednesday as whipping winds brought snow squalls.
One moment people could see down the block, and the next, they could barely see their own hands. Minutes later, it was clear again.
The squalls ripped through the Northeast, bringing brief near-whiteout conditions to New York, Philadelphia and other cities. They are part of an Arctic plunge hammering the northern part of the contiguous United States, causing the deaths of at least nine people…

A 26-vehicle accident on Route 222 in Pennsylvania came after visibility deteriorated rapidly, officials said. Seven people were sent to a hospital…
A motorist who was caught in the squall said, “The roads seemed OK but the snow started and the visibility went to impossible quickly.”…
Airports will likely be impacted as the band pushes through, meteorologists said. LaGuardia Airport had a ground stoppage, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The weather service also issued squall warnings for parts of Connecticut, Maine and Vermont. A squall is a sudden increase of wind speed by at least 18 mph…

    Deaths linked to brutal weather
As millions grapple with the frigid temperatures, at least nine deaths have been linked to the extreme weather this week.
Officials in Iowa said there have been four deaths there this week, including the discovery of a University of Iowa student on Wednesday.
The man, a sophomore, was found unresponsive about 3 a.m. CT behind a campus recreational facility. According to the National Weather Service, the temperature in Iowa City at that time was about 21 below zero and it had been below zero all day.
There also have been storm-related deaths reported in Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana and Wisconsin, authorities said…

It’s only getting chillier. Meteorologists predict at least 40 record lows will be set in the Midwest and Northeast after sundown, including in New York and Washington, which are expecting single-digit temperatures.
With at least five deaths linked to the extreme conditions this week, authorities are urging people to bundle up, stay inside and check up on the elderly and vulnerable in what experts are describing as “the coldest air in a generation.”…

There is already 11 inches of snow in part of western New York, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that forecasters were predicting totals of 24 inches by the time it stops falling. Rochester had about 8 inches, he said, and Syracuse had 9.
Upstate is the concern, the governor said, explaining the polar vortex will prove more complicated than other storms. Snow plows are already being transported from New York City and Long Island to northern parts of the state.
In Buffalo, officials have more than 50 plows ready to handle the snowfall, and they’ve laid more than 800 tons of salt on roads…

Chicago will be below zero for days
While most of the Midwest will see frigid temperatures, Chicago will be “the epicenter of the extreme cold,” CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen said.
Chicago could reach a record low temperature of 27 below zero by Thursday morning. Its daytime high Wednesday was forecast to be 15 below zero. Officials there are setting railroad tracks on fire because the extreme cold can cause defects…
It’ll be so cold, Chicago-area residents would be better off warming up in parts of Antarctica…
Forecasts predict a low of negative 27, the lowest temperature on record in Chicago, and 35 to 40 below zero in northern Illinois, where the record is negative 36, set in 1999…

More than 3,300 flights involving US airports were canceled Tuesday and Wednesday, including more than 2,000 in and out of Chicago airports, according to FlightAware.com.
Amtrak canceled all service to and from Chicago on Wednesday due to weather, including short-distance trains and long-distance overnight trains…

In Minnesota, blustery weather brought rare wind chills of negative 60. In Ponsford, the wind chill was negative 66, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said…
Hennen described it as the “coldest air in a generation.” Temperatures will plunge to 20-40 degrees below zero between Tuesday and Thursday in the Upper Midwest, Hennen said.
In northern Minnesota, wind chills were forecast to drop to 65-70 degrees below zero, which would rival the coldest wind chill ever recorded in the state (71 below) in 1982…

The National Weather Service forecast dangerous wind chills of negative 45 degrees for Des Moines (Iowa), minus 57 for Waterloo and negative 60 for Mason City into Wednesday night.
“This is the coldest air many of us will have ever experienced,” it tweeted…

North Dakota residents told to avoid roads
The wind chill at Grand Forks International Airport was 61 degrees below zero, the National Weather Service said. Extreme cold will continue through Thursday, with wind chills down into the negative 60s, according to the National Weather Service…

    State offices closed in Michigan
All state offices will be closed Wednesday and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has declared a state of emergency.
“Such widespread, extreme conditions have not occurred in Michigan for many years. It’s imperative that we are proactive with record-low temperatures being predicted by the National Weather Service,” she said.
“Wind chills are predicted as low as 50 degrees below zero in many places, such as metro Detroit which is especially unaccustomed to these temps.”…

You have to wonder how all this massive cooling with a change in average world temperatures caused by CO2 and reckoned to be +0.5C in over the last 50 years. Clearly the temperature is incredibly sensitive to tiny changes in the average? Or is someone making all this up?

      91

      • #

In fact all weather which is not average is due to Climate Change. Of course.

Yep, but probably not so much global temperatures (yet! IMO maybe more so when next year’s cold winter weather hits more of the NH — the timing would be about right for a majorly cold event), though it should impact USA temperature figures.
This freezing weather arrives where lots of weather stations are. If the USA figures get ‘adjusted’ to remove or play down this event, then most people in the USA will smell a rat.

Now how do the USA population feel about the many UN-IPCC mouthpieces that said ‘winters would get warmer and wetter’?

I am also puzzled at the knee jerk reaction. The cold weather must be Climate Change. Couldn’t they say ‘natural variation’? This desire to own every extreme event as proof of climate change is being sorely tested as it is seen as illogical by just about everyone. Bushfires are not Climate Change. Nor floods. Nor Tropical Storms. They are events and surely some are natural, but the Climate Change brigade wants to own everything.

Now they are paying the price for claiming everything is Climate Change, against all reason, fact and history. Clearly they are just talking about the weather.

Even the famous put down that non climate scientists confuse the climate with the weather, who is doing that? This storm is the weather, not the climate.

Claiming all massively cold weather as proof of a 0.5C change is close to unhinged and leaves them all open to ridicule, but then so does all of Climate Science by non scientists. Perhaps Cher could be chief climate scientist and also head of the Russian collusion investigation? Barbara Streisand could be put in charge of defending the borders of the United States? Leonardo di Caprio could look after the ebola breakout in the Congo and as king of Jerusalem, Christian Bale could sort out the Middle East.

It’s all too silly to be real, Hollywood Climate Change.

Last night the difference in temperature between inside my house and outside was 108 degrees F.

Between human body temp and outside was 130 degrees F.

The people that migrated here in numbers in the late 1800’s needed coal and wood to live. Today it is natural gas and heating oil. Electricity is used but even at our lower costs is not competitive with gas and oil. I have wood to burn but the EPA wants to regulate my burning.

Lately, my leftist friends proclaim “coal is past it’s prime”. I get pissed with them and remind them about staying warm. That usually shuts them up. Doesn’t change their minds probably because they are Leftist. But maybe it causes them to think.

This cold snap (polar bulltex) is a good way to remind them how important it is to stay warm.

Melbourne used to run on Newcastle coal. The coal was unloaded at the Lagoon pier in Port Melbourne for the local gasworks. Gas was everywhere as the lighting, the power source. Those marble fireplaces with steel inserts were used for burning coal, not wood. Coal was discovered near Geelong but the discovery of vast amounts of brown coal in the Yallourn valley changed everything and electricity meant any smoke could be kept a long way from Melbourne.

It is amazing how only a few years of Climate Change has destroyed what took a century to build. And how thoughtless, uncaring and greedy governments have become while the unions, shrinking to nothing are fighting to get control of everyone’s savings. Because they can.

Can we have our country back please? And our wonderful, efficient, clean and eternal and adequate coal power stations? Or are elite bankers here and overseas conspiring to turn Australia quickly into another Venezuela, a mendicant state, a holiday resort and a free open cut mine? Currently we even have to import our own gas from Singapore because of the cost of the maritime union. It is just getting worse.

The idea of the warm Arctic making the US freeze should not be a surprise, after all the UN-IPCC preferred models give results that says CO2 drives the climate through it’s high warming potential on global temperatures. So all this modeled CO2 mediated warming pushes (modeled) global humidity up, causing the polar vortex to bend and snow to fall on the USA. Or something modeled like that.

The UN-IPCC also say that CO2 and global temperatures were in equilibrium around 1750. And that’s their optimum level of atmospheric CO2 (about 280ppmv) they wish all of us to try and achieve. But the basics of the UN-IPCC ideas is that CO2 drives the climate, the implication is they wish us all to be in the climate of 1750, the climate of the Little Ice Age (LIA)
So surely that is what parts of the USA are feeling now.
    ¯
Of course back in 1700s the Arctic and Antarctic ice had expanded but so too had the deserts. Droughts too were common as was periods of extreme rainfall. All in all the biosphere had a very tough time with very low CO2 causing plants to grow weak and slow, and everything having to cope with an overall cold climate with vicious weather extremes.
    ¯
So is it rational to try for atmospheric CO2 to be similar to the 1750 levels? Is that truly what we should be aiming for?
Or maybe the UN-IPCC is really aiming for that to happen while the global flock of sheeple are distracted by overpriced electricity charges, and the next potential global disease epidemic.
    ¯
The North and Mid-USA states are now feeling what the climate of the LIA could have been like, do we really wish to be ill-prepared for the probable return of LIA conditions? Is it really believable that the world is warming up, or that the UN-IPCC climate models are in any way accurate?

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-01-31/dutch-historian-rutger-bregman-goes-viral-after-davos-tax-speech/10766504

“A Dutch historian has gone viral on social media after accusing the wealthy attendees of the World Economic Forum of hypocrisy, and arguing they should be taxed more.

    Key points:

The World Economic Forum was held at Davos last week
Historian Rutger Bregman was speaking on TIME’s panel on inequality
He said industry had to “stop talking about philanthropy and start talking about taxes”

“The forum, held in Davos, Switzerland, is attended by world leaders and heads of business, who come together annually to discuss ways to improve global economic security.

“Historian Rutger Bregman was speaking on a panel about taxes, and questioned billionaire attendees’ use of fuel-guzzling private jets to come to a conference with a strong focus on tackling climate change.

“This is my first time at Davos and I find it quite a bewildering experience to be honest,” he said.
“I mean, 1,500 private jets flown in to hear David Attenborough speak about how we’re wrecking the planet.
“I hear people talking the language of participation and justice and equality and transparency.

“But then almost no-one raises the real issue of tax avoidance, right, and of the rich just not paying their fair share.

“It feels like I’m at a firefighters’ conference and no-one’s allowed to speak about water.”

29 Jan: Popular Mechanics: This Man Is Riding a Motorcycle Across Siberia to the Coldest Inhabited Place on Earth. But Why?
An interview with Karolis Mieliauskas about his daring trek across a frozen landscape.
    By Sam Blum
    Q: What’s the lowest temperature you’re expecting?

A: Around this time, when I start, I think the temperature will be around minus 40 degrees. And locals say that in Oymyakon it should be around minus 60. If I would be interested in milder temperatures, I could choose a different time of year. I don’t go in the beginning of January, because it might be too intense, and I don’t go in March, because I think the temperature might be like minus 25 or 30.

27 Jan: Weather Channel: Midwest Cities Will be Colder Than Antarctica, Alaska, But There’s a Reason For That
      By Chris Dolce
The Midwest cold may not measure up to one the most frigid places in the Northern Hemisphere. Eastern Siberia is tough to beat out since wintertime lows in the minus 60s are typical.
The coldest permanently inhabited town on Earth, Oymyakon, Russia, is forecast to have highs in the minus 30s and lows in the minus 40s this week…
It’s not out of the question that a few spots in typically cold northern Minnesota may flirt with lows in the 40s below zero Thursday morning. That would come close to Oymyakon’s forecast low in the low to middle 40s below zero.

29 Jan: Guardian: Dutch man’s epic 89,000km drive proves electric cars are viable in Australia
By driving such extreme distances, Wiebe Wakker hopes to bust Australian anxieties about electric vehicles
    by Naaman Zhou
A Dutch man who has driven 89,000km from Amsterdam to Adelaide in a small electric car says he is proving to Australians that electric vehicles are a viable alternative.
Since March 2016, adventurer Wiebe Wakker has driven across 33 countries from Europe to the Middle East to south-east Asia and finally to Australia in a 2009 Volkswagen Golf, converted to electric…

Over the past seven months he has continued the journey around Australia from Darwin down to Perth, across the Nullarbor to Newcastle, up to Queensland, and back down to Adelaide. After Adelaide, Wakker will finish once he reaches Melbourne and then Sydney…
“My car is from 2009 and it has a limited range of 200km. Most cars that are available on the market now do 300km to 500km, so if you buy a current car in Australia you won’t have this problem. You can cover the whole country.”
Wakker’s car, which he calls “Blue Bandit”, is a first-generation electric car that can be charged on domestic power sockets. “When I started this journey I thought I would mainly charge at people’s homes and whenever I get a charging station that will be a bonus,” he said. He said those with newer electric cars would find the journey even easier.

Despite his positive experience, Wakker said he found the journey between Glendambo to Coober Pedy in South Australia a challenge in his 2009 car.
“It was 255km – I knew I wasn’t going to make it,” he said. “So I checked on my app to see how the wind was going, I saw that 12 hours later I would have a tailwind. I waited and drove very slow to save energy – 60km. I did 235km, which was my record. Just 20km from Coober Pedy I ran out, I put on a lot of sunscreen and waited for someone who could give me a tow. Someone came by within 10 minutes and said yes.”

The global warming community bemoans the fact that they can’t seem to get their message across to the general public. They believe that their ability to communicate, not the real world, is the problem; and that if they only had better communication skills, all would be well. I want to help. First cease inventing a new name for a crisis as the old name reaches is “use by” date. Second, quit telling people (especially people who are struggling to stay warm) that “global warming is causing cooling.” If you can’t see how the latter statement hurts your case, then you need more than better communication skills; you need a dose of common sense. You’d be much better off keeping your collective mouth shut. There, I’ve done my part. You can send me money via Jo’s blog.

As a precursor to my comment, I assert that I am a serious sceptic of the CAGW hypothesis. Nevertheless, sometime (IMHO) those sharing my view give a (scientific) argument that I doubt is at all certain. Also please note that I have not read every one of the 222 or so preceding comments.

Jo Nova writes: “Was there any climate model that predicted we would get record cold temperatures?”

TdeF writes at January 31, 2019 at 4:22am: “Telling people cold is hot does sound quite mad.” And again TdeF writes: “I am seriously puzzled. Has anyone actually explained how warming makes things colder? I mean an actual explanation, apart from the usual nonsense that warming somehow makes things more extreme, even the cold bits.” And TdeF comments more later, along similar lines.

I find that the climate is a complicated oscillatory and otherwise dynamical system, involving: cyclical excitation on daily, lunar month, annual and other bases; storage and movement of thermal energy between and within each of air mass, water mass, ground mass near the surface and (mostly) storage WRT water latent heat of fusion and storage and movement with water latent heat of evaporation.

Adding to the totality of energy in the ecosystem will (almost certainly) make greater these oscillations, movements and storage changes. This is on the knowledge that reducing the totality of energy will (at absolute zero) stop pretty much everything dynamical. And below extremely high temperatures that no one is talking about (ie most water and much other stuff has evaporated), we have very little reason to expect the curve of dynamism level versus total ecosystem energy to be anything but monotonically rising.

Now consider a rise in the total energy in the ecosphere; this from any reason, not just or necessarily a greenhouse gas effect; it could be increased solar irradiance, etc.

In most circumstances, the average temperature of the ecosphere (over time and location) will increase. This is likely, over a long enough averaging period (and all locations), to cause the average temperature of each of air, oceans and land surface to all individually increase; also there will most likely be (again on average) somewhat less ice caps and somewhat more evaporated water.

In parallel with this, the greater amount of total energy (in the ecosphere) is almost certain to increase modestly the amplitudes of various oscillations and other dynamical effects. This is likely to occasionally somewhat change the extremities of total energy density (in location and time).

    A. Thus longterm increase in total energy in the ecosphere is likely to increase the average temperature.

    B. Also longterm increase in total energy in the ecosphere is likely to cause the amplitude extremes (both hot and cold) to become greater.

    C. There is no particular reason to believe, if there is an increase in the total energy in the ecosphere, that any new (localised short-term) negative peak in the temperature will not be more negative (compared to any previous observation(s) of ‘extreme’ cold) than arises fairly from an associated average temperature increase A – so more extreme than previously seen.

    D. However, very occasional observations of extremes of hot or cold in any location at any time do not really tell us anything at all (or at all certain or reliable) about the total energy in the ecosphere. Each individual event is just as likely (maybe even much more likely) to be like a short-term noise level trough (or peak) in some sound, say from scratching a rough surface.

The trouble with some CAGW enthusiasts is that they think ignoring the logic of D is as good as using the logic of B and C. And most of them forget that both A and B will occur together if there is an increase in total energy in the ecosphere.

The trouble with some anti-CAGW enthusiasts (IMHO) is that they think B is not true, when (again IMHO) it is. Or they think C is not true, when it is.

    Best regards

Interesting and well thought out Nigel.

Your comments about TdeF and Jo though are perhaps a bit premature in that they may need the benefit of context.

TdeF’s comments, I suspect, are referencing the silly concept that “hot air” or Global Warming is able to initiate a cold strike into the heart of North America.
Maybe he was poking fun at the politics involved in sustaining the man made global warming scam.

Maybe it would help to go back a bit and check out his other comments.

Jo’s comment about so called climate models:
well climate models don’t do anything unless someone tells them to do it.
Sounds like Jo was putting out some ridicule to something that invites it.

Just a small comment on your items A,B, C and D.

They are either things within this type of system that are intuitively obvious or in the case of D something to be aware of when assessing the system.

Personally I think that the best measure of an Average World Temperature is not given by thermometers or their digital equivalent, but by relative sea levels.

Sea levels are an ideal indirect measure of the amount of water frozen on polar ice caps and held in glaciers.

Sea levels have fallen by six metres or so in the last 7,000 years and in recent times have been relatively stable.

Falling sea levels indicate ice is being accumulated and this goes with lower temperatures.

The main issue is not so much the “weather” as the claim that human origin CO2 can affect temperature change in the atmosphere. Scientific nonsense, but I digress.

      All the best.

      Nigel Sedgwick:

What convinces you that your item B is necessarily true? I can see many plausible results of added energy, and wouldn’t like to guess which applies to the world. Here are a few possibilities:

      1. Temperature just goes up uniformly (e.g. heating a lump of steel in an oven
      2. High temperatures go up more, low temperatures go up less (e.g. combustion chamber temperatures in a car engine when more fuel is introduced)
      3. High temperatures go up, low temperatures go down (e.g. an air conditioner/heat-exchanger: evaporator colder, condenser hotter)

While I agree with what you say in item D — that extremes don’t tell us very much about the net changes to energy — it seems to me you have your priorities back to front. What people care about is the extremes. Nobody gets killed by average weather.

Does it not strike you as strange — unscientific, even — that all the modelling of AGW is of averages, but all the marketing is of extremes?

        Good points Robert.

Essentially nothing much was said really.

I took part of the comment to mean that if you add more heat or energy to a system, then it will be more agitated. An example may be of a pot of water brought to the boil.

At low heat input it will bubble over gently. Add more energy and the bubble/extreme behaviour will be larger.

These things are basically irrelevant to the question of whether CO2 causes global warming.

It was good for what it did, lay out a very solid general guide for the analysis of a complex system.

          KK:

Yes, to be sure, extra energy can lead to greater variability. This would usually be because the new energy is not evenly distributed; things need to move around to chase a new equilibrium. Even if CO2 does cause warming, it’d be hard to think of a more uniform way of distributing the supposed extra energy — it’s just meant to be holding back a little more of the sun’s energy everywhere. Doesn’t seem much of a rationale for an increase in the system’s disorder.

I know I say it a lot, but it would be nice to have a coherent explanation from the people who are always rabbiting on that climate change is just “basic physics”.

Nigel, please consider: We are told that the poles are where the bulk of warming is concentrated. In fact satellite data do seem to support this. The overall effect would be to squelch extremes of weather because the contrast in temperatures (pole to equator) are diminished wouldn’t it?

“Deadly cold weather has brought what meteorologists call a “once-in-a-generation” deep freeze to the US.
The extreme Arctic blasts, caused by a spinning pool of cold air known as the polar vortex, could bring wind chill temperatures as low as -53C (-64F).”

“could bring wind chill temperatures as low as -53C (-64F)”, Oh No!

    Utter codswallop.
“Wind chill temperatures”, are a melding of wind speed and temperature. The faster the wind, the lower the ‘felt’ temperature; 40°F temperatures feel like 20°F in a twenty mph wind.
