In 1788 the First Fleet saw summer snow on Tasmania’s high country, not unusual during the LIA.

        This shouldn’t be happening now.

“THE next big drain on household budgets will be water, a report released today warns.
Water and sewerage expenses could double by 2040 — to around $2500 a year — according to findings by Infrastructure Australia.
And the shock to households could pressure governments to sell off water supply businesses — one of the few public utilities not to be privatised.
Ageing infrastructure is costing more to maintain with the extra expense being passed on, while climate change and growing populations will further strain supplies of clean water.
“If Australians want continued access to safe, reliable and affordable water in the future, we need to begin a staged approach to reforming the sector now — starting with a new national urban water reform plan,” Infrastructure Australia CEO, Philip Davies, said.”

            ‘…..urban water reform plan…..’

Presumably that means recycling sewage, which would be politically correct but massively unpopular with the electorate.

In 2040 they could bring the desalination plants out of mothballs.

We were staying in Middle Park last night and turned on the central heating. It was on again this morning. I daresay it will suddenly be 40C and we won’t know what’s hit us because Melbourne continues to live up to its 4 seasons in a day reputation.

Isn’t the Burnley Tunnel a complete drag these days? Yuk…smelly too with all those big trucks.

I are way to emotional on politics! 🙂 I prefer considered discussion on this previous.

To clarify; The mass of Earth, oceans, atmosphere have sensible heat (SH) average 2 J/(gm-Δk), but very little of that mass changes temperature (Δk) for storage of power as SH energy, oceans included.
OTOH in Earth’s atmosphere there remains an average of 2 x 10^19 gm of airborne H2O in various phases of H2O. This is nine days of global precipitation. Such cannot remain gaseous as most of Earth’s atmosphere is way to cold. Why does it remain airborne; moving from place to place, what is it doing? Please consider #7.2 above. What a magnificent Planet! 🙂

Is the oceans ability to retain heat better or more stable because of its increased density?

          40

          • #
            Will Janoschka

Increased mass density reduces both surface area, and cross sectional area. Both reduce ability to transfer power. More ‘stable’ in temperature YES! But what is ‘temperature’ 🙂

In this republic each state is willing to trade some sovereignty for the consolidation of force needed to oppose the enemy of all. We agree to federal consolidation of trade rights among us. We in no way agree to total overthrow of States Rights by some self appointed FEDERALIZE or the masses. Hence the well considered Electoral College! 🙂

“extra unthreaded. Sometimes the weekend is too far away…” Oh dear! It’s the start of the slippery slide into “One more won’t hurt”, “I can stop anytime I want”.

Or is this a cunning plot to cripple the trolls? They don’t come on the W.E. Unthreaded because the free flowing dialogue doesn’t fit their prepared scripts. Actually they have been thin on the blog lately, have they realised that they’ve lost? Has someone cut off their subsidies?
Has the sheer ludicrousness of the Chinese virtue signalling by building an electric ship to transport coal to a power station made even them realise what the Chinese really think about Global Warming a.k.a. Climate Change a.k.a Weather Disruption ?
Questions, but can the trolls provide any answers? Does Harry Twin-Otter sniff AvGas?

      – Create so much harmony that the Energiser and Duracell bunnies make enough electricity so S.A won’t have to burrow from other states.
      – It emits a Musky smell that only attracts the rare Green Lemming.
      – It has a higher discharge rate than a leper colony, but slightly lower than dual citizen politician in Aus.
      – Its included with the toy Wind Farm…..kickbacks sold separately.

The last time Mr Twinotter paid a visit to this blog, he was behaving himself, still spouting “The Harry Twinotter Line,” to be sure, but doing so with a level of dignity and decorum which had been substantially absent on previous occasions. So I left him alone, and let all you lot enjoy him. 🙂 At least Mr. Twinotter, for all his bad manners, did not cross that line.

Yes…and it comes with a sober warning too :

“1 The burden of the word of the Lord for Israel, saith the Lord, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.

2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.

3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.

4 In that day, saith the Lord, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.

5 And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the Lord of hosts their God.

6 In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem.

7 The Lord also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah.

8 In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the Lord before them.

9 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.”

It has little to do with moving the Embassy to Jerusalem.

It has a lot to do with Trump: a) Not being, “The First Female President”; b) Not being a Democrat; c) Not being afraid to do what he sees as being the best for America; d) Not ignoring State Department advice; e) Considering America’s political and commercial interests in the region; f) Not being Hilary Clinton; g) Being a male; h) Not being married to a previous president; i) Not being under investigation; j) Still not being a Democrat; k) Not being “a girl”; and l) Having a better comb-over than any previous President.

Unless the ABC can come up with a good CGI solution our Green Betters will have to break out the Domestos.

The marriage laws in Australia were changed in a very big way today, purely from a legal perspective can someone explain to me how our constitutional laws can be changed without an official plebiscite or referendum as I thought was the case?

I’ve tried to find the reasoning of allowing parliament to go to a vote on this bill besides a national survey that didn’t mean anything.

    40

    • #
      Lewis p Buckingham

It has always been assumed that marriage was the domain of people who could potentially have their own children, raising them in a family, ie a man and a woman.
Hence it was never put in a constitution.
The interesting bit will be where we go from here.

When you come down to it, the civil laws surrounding traditional marriage are no more than a prescription for the ownership of chattels.

Same sex marriages also needed a formal partnership agreement regarding ownership of property.

This law (from the little I have read), seems to combine the two concepts.

This is OT, however since governments are burning fossil fuels to drive fans to cool coral, its time to move to the practicalities of government, rather than bread and circuses.
    The Banking Royal Commission.
Despite moves to make payment instantaneous we need to have this actually happen.
When I pay a staff member after the hour of 5pm on a Friday, she may not be paid in her own account until Monday, on a long weekend, Tuesday.
The money, however ,is not in MY account, the bank[s]have it and presumably loan it out to someone else.
This is despite the NBN super highway, the computer and the four pillars that support us all.
There needs to be a Royal Commission into the operation of super funds once the life savings are fully withdrawable after 65 years of age.
My fund will not allow me the full statement of deposit in last financial year, despite the fact I am working, in accumulation and have saved the money well in excess of the amount withdrawn.
The reason given is that I made a withdrawal between the two deposits made in the last financial year.
The result is that I am not able to receive a tax deduction of about $5000, money that cannot be retrieved, despite the apparent intention of the tax act to allow a deduction.
    Has anyone had this experience.
Quoted in last weekend’s Australian. David Murray said “A Royal Commission would bring a different focus on misconduct, starting with complaints and exploring whether there were problems with contracts or the law’.
The problem here is that the Senate rejects an inquiry into super,so rejects a Royal Commission into finance,
the only way of looking at the whole problem, based on the lived history of respondents.

I have this theory Rereke about New Zealand politics that goes like this (tell me what you think). New Zealand elections are determined by SEX. Winston Peters is a sex object to a sizeable cohort of small town pink rinse frusteratii (Italian for old ladies who don’t get enough) but not by policy because God knows what the aforementioned Brill cream slippy merchant actually stands for, not that Jacinda actually cares. Winston is a sex object in an uncomfortable granny keeps it to herself kind of way. Appellate Judge Joseph Howard, writing for the unanimous court, said …… the emails from Malcolm Hughes, who is still with the UA, and Jonathan Overpeck, who left earlier this year, are public records.

Craig Richardson, president of E & E, said the request relates to so-called “hockey stick” research….
“It’s the foundational argument for really this whole climate change industry and their focus,” he said.

“They showed there were a lot of games being played with the data,” Richardson said.

He said that getting all the emails, including from the two scientists, will reveal “an unvarnished view of how the process works … and how climate scientists on the other side of this have been shut out.”

It could get interesting when the emails are released.

Do you want to have some fun?'” the woman said embarrassingly. “That’s obscene!” the priest exclaimed, “I can see why you are embarrassed.” He thought a minute and then said, “You know, I may have a solution to this problem. I have two male parrots whom I have taught to pray and read the Bible. Bring your two parrots over to my house and we will put them in the cage with Francis and Job. My parrots can teach your parrots to praise and worship. I’m sure your parrots will stop saying that…that phrase in no time.” “Thank you,” the lady responded, “this may very well be the solution.” The next day, she brought her female parrots to the priest’s house. As he ushered her in, she saw his two male parrots were inside their cage, holding their rosary beads and praying. Impressed, she walked over and placed her parrots in with them. After just a couple of seconds, the female parrots exclaimed out in unison, “Hi, we’re prostitutes. Do you want to have some fun?” There was a stunned silence. Finally, one male parrot looked over at the other male parrot and said, “Put the beads away, Francis, our prayers have been answered!”

        The parish priest is Willy

Minds me of a story they tell about Willy Feeley when he was a young fella. Willy was bashful, awful bashful. Well, one day he takes a heifer over to Graves’ bull. Ever’body was out but Elsie Graves, and Elsie wasn’t bashful at all. Willy, he stood there turnin’ red an’ he couldn’t even talk. Elsie says, ‘I know what you come for; the bull’s out in back a the barn.’ Well, they took the heifer out there an’ Willy an’ Elsie sat on the fence to watch. Purty soon Willy got feelin’ purty fly. Elsie looks over an’ says, like she don’t know, ‘What’s a matter, Willy?’ Willy’s so randy, he can’t hardly set still. ‘By God,’ he says, ‘by God, I wisht I was a-doin’ that!’ Elsie says, ‘Why not, WIlly? It’s your heifer

That’s a variation on one my husband was told years ago.

The lady had a parrot called Samantha, who everlastingly parroted ‘I’m a good time girl, I like a good time, I’m a good time girl’. She asked her vicar for help as he had two parrots called Elijah and Jeremiah. Samantha was put into the cage with the vicar’s two and immediately she went into her ‘I’m a good time girl….’ routine. Elijah nudged Jeremiah and said ‘I think our prayers are answered!’.

Another from a source in South Yarra but capable of variation, depending on where you are living at the time:

Two Poodles from South Yarra met a Toorak Mutt in Fawkner Park. ‘I’m Mimi’ said the first, ‘spelt MI MI’. ‘I’m Fifi’ said the second, ‘spelt FI FI’. ‘I’m Fido’ said the mutt, ‘spelt PHIDEAUX’.

We told the first one to some Cypriot friends while on a visit to Cyprus and enjoying a mezze with them. We have a small amount of Greek and they had not much more English but somehow we managed to convey the joke. 🙂

A series of little tasty Cypriot dishes (similar all around the Mediterranean). They are like appetisers but enough of them and you have definitely had a good meal! The Arabs have a similar one and always good. A mixture of hors d’oevre and mini main course dishes really.

The California bushfires have sparked a debate, this from last year before the present conflagration.

    https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2016/11/the-great-eucalyptus-debate/509069/

There is a feeling that all the fires were purposely or inadvertently caused by humans, this must be of great concern for the authorities.

The “art” of exaggeration as practiced by our friends over on RE.com..

Zen has been granted a licience enabling them to proceed with their massive 1 GW solar and storage project in Whyalla …….

    http://reneweconomy.com.au/zen-energy-gets-retail-licence-launch-base-load-renewable-product-37821/

But the Whyalla proposal was never a 1GW project ?…
    It was ..
    200MW solar
    100 MWh battery storage
600 MWh pumped hydro storage (120 MW power)
    100 MW of Demand Management
So really only 40 MW (equivalent) of new generation capacity !….on a good day.
With a possibility of a further 480 MW (120 MW equivalent) in other locations ,…..sometime in the future …..depending on many other factors.!

Geothermal flux from submarine volcanoes maybe a major driver of climate change, ocean overturning and other cyclic phenomenon, not to mention the possible source of the missing heat.

Is Melbourne Water Hydro an intermittent renewable elctricity source?

Hydro is usually considered the only renewable power source which actually works. So more Hydro is Good!

But what if Melbourne Water (which has installed a number of Hydro Power stations to take advantage of water transfers between Reservoirs) makes its small transfers at inappropriate times. Does that make our power supply situation better or worse?

Lot of huff and puff on ABC radio about Esso Mobil not paying their fare share of company tax , which might be true I don’t know but is there anyone one out there that doesn’t try and minimise their tax burden ?

The multinationals are getting away with theft, but lets not worry about that, what do you think of this?

‘Mr Geng said Mr Turnbull’s remarks were prejudiced against China and had poisoned the atmosphere of China-Australia relations.

“We are astounded by the relevant remarks of the Australian leader. Such remarks simply cater to the irresponsible reports by some Australian media that are without principle and full of bias against China,” Mr Geng said at a regularly scheduled briefing.’

The Guardian’s US front page this morning contains one reasoned, and one hysterical, article about climate change.

    The rational one is

Why are ferocious wildfires plaguing southern California?
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/dec/08/wildfires-southern-california-forcing-120000-to-flee

which contains the unwonted claim that

The exact role of climate change upon 2017 wildfires in California is still the subject of some discussion among scientists.

    The other is

‘Soul-crushing’ video of starving polar bear exposes climate crisis, experts say

    Back to normal.

Joanne: The US internet is currently being bombed by the run away deep state! Please let me park this for a while.

“the the first news was about FISC Judge Contreras being “recused” from General Flynn’s case/sentencing — by whom was not noted. Currently it is reported that the Judge “recused” himself.
My point being that IF,the “official” story got changed from the Judge being recused to the Judge recusing himself then it opens a whole ‘nuther can of worm’!
So we have the whole illegal FCIA court being Strazoked by Peter and how many others? How can congress form a court independent of the judiciary branch of the government; SCOTUS as per the constitution Article III. It appears that the whole stinky congress of the USA need be recused for the next 50 years! START Today not next November.
