Climate grief group has nine step program

I nearly headlined this:  Climate grief group meets at someone’s house, Grist covers it. That’s pretty much all this program is. No one even counts to nine in this story.

Depressed about climate change? There’s a 9-step program for that.

Imagine Alcoholics Anonymous mixed with an environmental humanities course, and you’ll begin to get a sense of the “good grief” group started by Schmidt. Its goal is to help people cope with what’s been called “climate grief” — anxiety, sadness, depression, and other emotions provoked by awareness of the planet’s march toward a hotter,… future…

What she found was that feelings of sadness and anxiety, and even literal nightmares, were common. Last year, with the help of her partner, Aimee Reau, Schmidt developed a nine-step program for building resiliency loosely modeled on AA…

But this is big:

About a dozen people attend each session and 50 subscribe to its mailings.

If I get 12 people to my house, and have 12,000 subscribers, do you think Grist will write it up?

Perhaps they have some good results?

Perhaps not:

Schmidt, who now works as an outreach coordinator at the environmental group HEAL Utah, hopes to soon evaluate the pilot, incorporate the program as a nonprofit…

I predict she’ll make much more profit as a nonprofit.

The article tells the story of Keira Bitter, who has it tough. Her family are all Trump voters. She felt alone, even broke down in tears at the first session. So what did the team do — made her feel worse:

The group has been educating her about the consequences of climate change, which has caused her more short-term anxiety,…

One climate grief victim finds it hard to stay in a shop filled with poisonous packaging:

The meetings have been held at the home of Alli Harbertson, who met Schmidt three years ago through a wilderness “vision fast” program. Harbertson works as a caterer, and she recalls once standing in a Costco aisle, surrounded by carts with packaged foods up to people’s shoulders. She retreated to her car for a while before she could face the store again.

Jokes aside about the snowflake shoppers, these people are acting with integrity (if you believe in the climate models and labcoat curses). If the climate scientists are right, and the public believed them, there would be millions of people with these fears and anxieties.

Here’s the bitter Take Home Message for one Climate Griever:

Dick Meyer: “We all live, don’t we, with the notion that if we need it, someone will come save us?” he says. “Well, no one is coming to save you. Certainly not someone from Washington.”

This is the religion of the US President as Messiah — and the discovery of the ugly truth that there are no Gods in Washington. While presidents look like they are giving bread and fishes, it’s an illusion: they have no bread and fishes to give, they take from some and give that to others.

I’d like to suggest a four step program to end Climate Grief:

  1. Keep Calm and read The Skeptics Handbook.
  2. Get a real job.
  3. Go to a Heartland Conference — meet actual skeptics.
  4. Spend ten minutes a day reading skeptic blogs — good for your mental hygiene.

Stop Climate Grief at the source!

But seriously folks — how do we help the Gullible?

…how do we help the Gullible?

Very simple: we can’t. Facts are of no use to The Gullible; they believe what they want to believe. To assail them with facts is to impinge upon their very sensitivities, and you will automatically be blanked; not a difficult concept to demonstrate – just post a “contrarian” view on an alarmist site and watch the angry wasps uselessly buzzing around you, trying to get their barbs into you.

The gullibility of youth, inexperience or simpletons are all normal occurrences in societies, the gullibility of seemingly capable people that’re absorbed by cults is something altogether.

Western schools\religions claim suicide (except by cop) is a sin!! Go forth and multiply; is fine! But only until you build enough fossil fueled machinery to replace the kids helping harvest! After that ‘keep it in your pants’!!

A couple of years ago I read that approximately half of the Australian adult population have the comprehension level of primary school students. If this is a fact they are obviously the gullible people of our society. If this was not a fact I doubt that politicians would get away with so much nonsense, the MSM would not dare to indulge in the political spin (even paid advertising presented as news items).

It is a very worrying situation that possibly half the adult population are easily misled and therefore that they accept propaganda as fact.

When I was teaching (gave it up 20 years ago) the common knowledge was that newspapers were pitched at the reading/comprehension level of a 14 year old. TV was lower. 14 years is low in my opinion, but given what has happened in our education system since then it would not surprise me that it has slipped lower.

It’s true they aimed at a FOG index of 10 (10 years of schooling) which is approximately age 15. When you do writing courses for corporate purposes they recommend the same FOG index for all corporate communications too.

When I was a cadet reporter, I was told to write for an intelligent 12-year-old. The cadet counsellor said most people’s reading ability does not advance beyond that level, and 12 is the age at which many people start reading newspapers and we don’t want to alienate that audience.

Gullible people need leaders. They attract rent seekers. They mistake the rent seekers who milk them along with everyone else for leaders. They are given token rewards. These rewards are always taken from them and given back to them at a discount by their “leaders”.

Our political systems make it possible to seek rent. Payment for service is never enough for the gullible. They want fame for service.

Real leaders know fame is worthless. Reputation built on fame can be removed by the gullible.

Jo asks how do we help the gullible? To which group we might add the credulous, the vulnerable, the poorly-informed, and sundry other victims of the CO2 Scaremongering which has so defaced society for the past few decades.

Some other group have found advantage in the Scare, for fundraising (e.g. Oxfam, Christian Aid, WWF, Friends of the Earth, and so on down a long long list), for rent-seeeking (see the beneficiaries of windfarms and other renewables scams feeding off subsidies and surcharges on electricity bills), for self-glorification (see Gore, McKibben, Hansen, Mann, and so on down the list of political opportunists), for sadism (see all those producing such as the 10:10 video ‘No Pressure’, and other materials designed to scare and intimidate, and of course for opportunities for financial wheeling and dealing that ‘carbon’ linked schemes can offer (see CapnTrade, see Carbon Credits, and more).

I think ‘The Skeptics Handbook’ is a superb resource for all the pastoral work facing kindly sceptics over the coming years and probably decades, as we look for ways to calm the over-excited, soothe the highly-strung, and reassure those scared anywhere from ‘quite a bit’ to ‘witless’. But there is surely scope for dedicated websites, and more publications to help in this work. The NIPCC reports also provide a great resource for some, and there are excellent histories of the Scare such as ‘Hubris’ by Michael Hart, and Rupert Darwall’s ‘The Age of Global Warming’. These are large works however, and smaller ones would also be welcome.

    321

    • #

John, fair point. I wrote The Skeptics Handbook for skeptics, so it isn’t ideal, and perhaps I ought write something specific.

Maybe I should have used a different word — I didn’t mean “gullibles” in a nasty way. These are not the ones driving the problem. They are (mostly) not profiting at all, but trying to live with this impossible belief that they can change the global weather by avoiding foods with excess packaging.

The people driving this alarming fantasy are flying thousands of miles on jet fuel without needing any therapy and raking in the golden gravy.

The Gullibles consist of people like me (when young and ignorant) and others who just can’t do numbers, or go against the crowd. The former just needs information (ie The Handbook) but for the latter two, we need to use the group effect (point out the other consensus, the motivations) and we need images and cartoons, satire, etc. These are exactly what Al Gore uses (except he can’t do satire).

I agree! How much funding is required (I’ll contribute) to get THE MASTER, ‘Brad Keyes’, to help the rest of us gain ‘knowledge of satire’ via example? Somewhere is someone that can be better than Brad, after Brad transfers his knowledge.

Jo its a hard balance – maybe “vulnerable” might be the right word? The problem is you have adults with adult bodies but child-like intelligence in some cases so they are vulnerable to being exploited.

I also think the MSM double down by going after the mums who want to instinctively protect their kids from “nasty CAGW”, so the MSM are no better than propaganda pushers and exploiters of people with child like intelligence, which really is just not cricket.

I guess if you extend it to the rest of society, you can see how easy it is to send people off to any old war if its ” sold” right….

Jo, most of us reading/posting on this site recognise you as a very good science educator. BUT whenever I have posted on other sites suggesting your site as a good source of information on climate science, the response is mocking. Typically you are described as “not a climate scientist”, “never published any peer-reviewed papers on climate” and a “climate denier blogger”. Even when I have posted a link to your very good “Man Made Global Warming Disproved…” to show a scientific analysis with references, there is bitter rejection of it having any scientific credibility. It’s hard to communicate to most people. Even the local newspaper (Fairfax) will not publish any letter I submit on climate change.

I’ve been involved, to some extent, in adult education myself and have found that the vast majority of people do not think in a logical, analytical or scientific way at all. They think emotionally in a series of pictures or images of the world around them. They do not grasp, in any detail, numbers or narrative except in “headlines” or catchphrases. The ABC is more likely to invite a 22yr old female Greenpeace activist or a junior Journo from the Guardian to comment on climate policy than someone such as yourself. It’s frustrating. Should we start uttering OMG in every sentence to better get the message across? Any comment on this dilemma? OMG, OMG

I think its the scale of the perceived threat that captures the imagination of people that have a certain disposition to extreme reactive suggestion, coupled with Jo’s observed socially engineered mindset to crave bigger government for solutions as shown in statements like “Well, no one is coming to save you. Certainly not someone from Washington.” you have a perfect blueprint for a crusader of anything.

Lobbying your local MP to get a pedestrian crossing installed on a busy road simply pales in comparison to influencing world leaders or how nations are ran (into the ground), sound familiar? think political or religious ideologies then take your pick of any that has achieved this in our known history, the people behind those movements are exactly like the supporters of this latest green one, they want a role in the deconstruction of current western values as much as we that want to preserve it.

This story is what we called in the Navy, “a No [snip]”. I had an older sister that became convinced that contact with aluminum would cause brain damage and she would refuse contact with any source. I had to tell her soda cans were aluminum, she quit drinking soda, aluminum products in deodorants put her of deodorant. I convinced her that beer bottle caps had traces of aluminum and she swore off beer. I once kidded her that anything other than 100% cotton clothing had chemicals in them that could cancer, she gave up all her clothes that had any synthetics and put cardboard between her cotton sheets and her bed mat, she slept on a futon. I used to look for every opportunity to get her to think about her “green” life style including telling her she was enslaving cows and chickens when she drank milk and ate eggs, she gave them up. She smoked “organic” tobacco, because “that’s what the native american’s did”. She detested doctors and ate her vitamins, all natural of course…(?) She contracted cancers of multiple types, uterine, bone, brain, but she was hell bent for leather to live naturally. She died at 52. In our last conversation she admitted that she probably should have gone to a doctor. Love her still…gullible.

Someone tell these nappy-moisteners that the worst times for humans were during coolings. The Bronze Age collapse and the fall of the Old Kingdom, for example. And the Migration period and LIA if more examples are needed. And for much (though not all) of the world, cooling means the possiblity of mega-drought.

This is about as good as climate gets, and moreover St George won yesterday arvo. So bloody-well dry up and change that nappy!

It’s been marvellous so far, as we haven’t had to fire up our biomass converter, given the lovely global warming we’ve been experiencing, something that I remember from my childhood days. Why won’t these grievers grieve about those suffering in the cold?

Let them get on with it. They don’t have enough to worry about so need to find anything to demonstrate their worth.

Go back a generation in my case and my father was orphaned at 6 years of age as both his parents died of TB (1911) – his mother in a workhouse in Southwark London. That didn’t give him enough time to worry about ephemeral crap – he had to get off his backside quickly and earn money to eat and find shelter.

Whilst I don’t wish this on anyone I have no time at all for these snowflakes – they need to taste reality now and then to be able to determine the real value of things around them.

No one even counts to nine in this story.

I suppose that one reason they don’t get to nine is because at that point, with probably no resolution of their anxiety, that ninth step would have to be off the edge of some cliff or a bridge somewhere.

    70

    • #
      Roy Hogue

And it’s all so avoidable too. And here’s how.

Will the real adults in the audience stand up and be recognized.

      Thank you!

Now each of you who’re standing take one or two of those not standing and tell them they’re OK after all. Tell them their fear is understandable. Tell them you love them, that you aren’t afraid… …tell them all the things a parent would tell an anxious, worried child and hug them tight, let them know someone loves them and let them feel the love… There, see! It’s better already.

It’s Hogue’s recipe for helping the immature survive until they become more mature. It works every time. We did it with our own children when they were worried. So why not with these nine-steppers?

Hey! Nine-Steppers — sounds like a dance doesn’t it? Maybe we could get them all to learn the Nine-Step to distract their attention from their anxiety. Sounds even better, no?

Problem solved. Or maybe not. 😉

Sam, a Blackphone is made by Silentcircle.com , an android run phone that’s designed specifically to enhance security and privacy. One of the downsides to android operating system on phones is that as android is owned by g**gle, and hard to have proper privacy due to this, although my phone is a hack of android to stop a telco coming in via the baseband link which exists in most phones….its more complex than that, but most smartphones leak your private data like a seive, and as apple stuff is hard to control unless you jailbreak them, but it shouldn’t have to be that hard….I could write a dissertation on this but smartphones are designed to make it easy to track people….

              • #

All phones are being designed to allow tracking of their owners. If your phone allows GPS to be shut off except for emergency calls (911 in the states) see if you can verify that it’s actually shut off. Then at least the only location anyone can do is by identifying the base station your phone is nearest to.

But let’s face it. If you can reach someone else by some means, phone, Internet, black magic, whatever it is, then that same means can be used to locate you. Even in the days of rotary dial phones and mechanical step relay switching centers a call could be traced. They’re just making it easier. And frankly, our governments are in one it, in fact driving it without telling us.

Welcome to 1984, only just a few years later than predicted.

            Steve,

I have an ulterior motive. I’m setting up a DLNA server on my computer that will feed photos and video to my Bu-ray player for display on the TV in the livingroom. The Blu-ray player prefers almost everything but the format of some legacy video files I have. And the best choice to convert to is mp4, plain old MPEG-4, the up and coming standard for double HD TV and internet video. Hence my search for conversion to mp4.

DLNA, if you’re not familiar with the acronym stands for Digital Living Network Association and there are several good free DLNA servers that can handle the job. All you need is a device on your network that can act as the renderer and you’re in business, a Blu-ray player like mine or a so-called smart TV and others.

The only hitch is that my player knows nothing of .avi or .mov files that I’ve acquired over the years.

It’s been a fight all the way, nothing is documented well and most of it not at all — what’s new, right? I even had to fight with my firewall to allow unfettered communication with the player.

Like you, I have as little as I possibly can to do with anything Apple but it’s handy to have iTunes and Quicktime on the computer.

Probably because they aren’t even educated enough to be able to count to nine.

A long time ago, I read a Heinlein story in which a character couldn’t read. It probably wasn’t his fault, he probably just went to a school that didn’t teach the students to read. Australia’s school system is rapidly going the same way.

Cunsolo is the director of the Labrador Institute at Memorial University, and contributed to the report. She points to Hurricane Katrina as one extreme climate-related disaster that severely impacted people’s mental health.

It is time these people put events like these into context: during the 20th century, Katrina-sized hurricanes occurred 2 or 3 times a decade – in the 21st century, there has only been ONE in nearly 2 decades. Quite why that should be considered alarming is anyone’s guess – one would have thought it should be a lot more calming than worrying.

      You’ve hurt my feelings now
Searching for reasons to make me sad
      When I’m stricken with doubt
On the outside I’m small and dim
And on the inside I’m feeling grim

I’m the only one who thinks the same
      No one remembers my name
      Help me
      Alone but seeking fame
The red thumber with no name
      Oh woe is me.

Understanding isn’t something that controls my life
      I’d rather feed my pride
I press red thumbs because my mind is dark
Might stick where I can hide
Woe is me, feel sorry for this lonely one
Just two or three are on my side
Woe, if we work together we can bring them down
      How does that sound?

I’m the only one who thinks the same
      No one remembers my name
      Help me
      Alone but seeking fame
The red thumber with no name
      Oh woe is me.

Every blog has at least one
      Scoffing at the facts therein
I never know why or what for
      I never try to think
      To doubt is to sin
So with a sigh and frown
I press the red button down.

I’m the only one who thinks the same
      No one remembers my name
      Help me
      Alone but seeking fame
      Oh woe is me.

Maybe its time we start circulating stories about how people are becoming depressed over the waste and totalitarianism being carried out in the name of global warming and how it will drive us broke and destroy our society.

Seriously, the solution to helping the gullible is objective debate, replace belief with facts because right now the facts are being suppressed by the mainstream media. But then the warmists don’t want debate and they dont want it with a passion. I wonder why? (/sarc) Its just more of a one sided psychological pressure campaign.

The wind is blowing in SA early this morning, and demand of 940 MW is being oversupplied by wind 1140 MW and fossil 220 MW. So they are exporting over 400 MW to Vic and that is being shared with Tas and NSW as Vic exports over 1000 MW. But the really good news – it’s cheap, with spot prices $48-68 across the network. For the first 8 days of April, average daily prices were $95-115. Jay was right /sarc

They should set up wind farms within the Roaring Forties corridor, it would be the cheapest energy in the world.

Following on from that, its now the Roaring Fifties.

‘Using data derived from Antarctic ice cores and other sources, the researchers found Southern Ocean winds are now stronger than at any time in the past 1000 years.

‘Australian scientists to study ice cores from Antarctica In the past half century, the westerly winds have quickened 10 to 15 per cent and moved 2 to 5 degrees closer to the South Pole – meaning fewer storms are reaching as far north as Australia.’

If that is really the case, then the increased rate of circulation is indicative of a dive into an ice age. The southern, circum-polar ocean currents brought about the “modern” era of ice ages by “installing” a freezer compartment for the planet.

The deep, deep, deep-freeze is around the Weddell Sea, on the edge of Antarctica as that is where the ocean currents try to meet to dispose of their heat. Although it’s colder in the interior of the continent, the heat capacity of the air moving over the cold land is not enough to cool more than half the planet. The oceans are far more effective; even being up to 80°C warmer than Antarctic air.

A stronger circulation of winds indicates that a deeper cold sink is in effect in the Antarctic; the thermal gradient is what drives the strength of winds. The cold ocean cell off the SW coast of Australia has been around since before the summer leading to a cooler, wetter summer than (some say) has not been seen since the 1960’s. [It’s still all natural variability.]

‘….the increased rate of circulation is indicative of a dive into an ice age. ‘

Maybe, I’ll have to think about that.

Interesting to note that James Cook and later Weddell sailed further south than we can today, and the Dalton Minimum fell in the middle of their explorations. There were huge icebergs in the southern ocean throughout the 19th century and I’m in need of a definitive answer on the causal mechanisms.

Here is the present state of play, wind wise, looks normal.

The northerly extent of icebergs in the late 19th century is linked to a rapidly increasing Length Of Day (LOD) and maybe related to preserving the planet’s angular momentum.

‘The next step should be jetstream meridionality increasing further along with global cloudiness and a shift of all the climate zones towards the equator.

In conclusion, Antartica was a couple of degrees cooler during the LIA, with much reduced accumulation of snow, but glaciers still saw an increase in mass balance. Which may go someway in explaining the ice rafting throughout the 19th century.

Oh woe! Oh woe! Oh woe! What do we do?

For joy! For joy! For joy! We shut down that evil CO2 belching relic Hazelwood. We’re on the way to being saved.

In the eleven days since Hazelwood shut down its last Unit, and stopped emitting CO2, China, India, South Korea, Japan, somewhere in else in South East Asia, somewhere in Europe, brand new large scale coal fired power plants started operating.

In those eleven days, Hazelwood has probably been replaced around ten times over.

The only people worrying about this are the snowflakes who already have reliable, constant, always there, on tap electricity.

In all those other places, they are just thankful that at last, that electricity is coming their way.

The only hope for Hazelwood now is to build a new, larger USC unit on site. The coal mine, cooling pond and transmission lines are already in place and presumably planning permission would not be difficult since a power station is already an approved use for the site.

We’re told “clean” energy is a viable and cost effective. But cut the government subsidies, and 97 percent of investors vanish (in Australia it’s collapsed from $2.6b annually to $80m). The truth is that renewables are almost totally dependent on taxpayer largess. No wonder they lobby like their life depends on it. It does.

          Peter Hannam of the SMH:

“Australia’s investment in renewable energy all but dried up in the first half of 2014 amid uncertainty fuelled by the government’s latest review of the mandatory target, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

In the six months to June, just $40 million was invested in large-scale renewable energy, such as wind farms, the lowest level since the first half of 2001, according to Kobad Bhavnagri, head of BNEF’s Australian unit.

The investment tally compared with $2.691 billion in 2013, the second largest annual inflow of funds to the clean energy sector behind the peak year of 2010.”

Elsewhere investment in renewables has slowed from its peak in 2011 but still running at $64b a quarter, or nearly $700 million every day. Spot that vested interest! From The Australian:

“Global clean energy investment surged to $US63.6bn in the second quarter of […]

One of the true invariable and identifying hall marks of the Climate Alarmist Grief cabal and coterie and climate alarmist science and its promoters is the absolute and totally despicable self absorbent selfishness and total self centredness of the members of that entire climate alarmist cabal as we see so strongly promoted in Jo’s headline post on the “Suffers from Climate Grief”[ sarc ]

There is no room in those usually very well paid and well endowed economically, elitist climate alarmist “despicables” belief system to even think about let alone consider what the consequences of the energy policies they believe in and are fanatically promoting to politicians and the media.

Those policies of making Energy more and more expensive and unaffordable so as to reduce energy usage so as to save on the dreaded but never proven scientifically, climate warming atmospheric gas, carbon dioxide supposedly being emitted from fossil fuel generators as well as trying to force the populace to rely on electrical energy generations systems of wind in particular as well as solar , energy generators that even after some 3000 years of human use and development were abandoned as fast as possible by the pioneers of the British pioneered Industrial revolution in favour of coal fired ie; fossil fuelled power sources.

The CAGW/ climate change believing, selfish in the extreme, pathologically self centred CAGW believing “despicables ” have never ever publicly admitted or have ever publicly analysed what their politicise and proposed programs of forcing energy prices ever higher so as to reduce energy usage, might and will mean to millions of other far less economically and socially benefitted and advantaged citizens than themselves both in their own developed nations and in so many global nations that are trying to provide a better life for their own people.

From those comments one can draw a conclusion that with most of climate alarmist science and climate alarmist scientists and climate alarmist promoting media have never given any time or thought or have made any genuine attempts to understand the plight of millions of ordinary people who faced with ever more unaffordable energy bills of every nature have no where to turn to to try and satisfy their requirements for energy that would lead to better and far more healthy and beneficial life for themselves and their families.

Only blatant cherry picking of data, f****ulent alteration of weather and historical climate data on a scale that in the financial field would lead to very long jail terms for the individuals involved allied with a pathological scramble for funding where blatant fr****seems to be the norm required to collect the tax payer funded largesse which seems to be the main object of most of climate alarmist researchers.

And the data they so blatantly misrepresent to politicians and the media does not in the slightest way seemingly give even a twinge to their consciences as in their fanatical drive to obtain luxurious tax payer funded grants and funding, through the energy policies they promote they destroy the benefits of cheap energy to the populace leaving millions in a situation where they a become mired in energy poverty and can longer afford to live lives of some comfort and with some form of future other than constant struggle to maintain a semblance of a civilised life style.
    ——–
Here in eastern Australia we often think of Western Australia as a wealthy bastion of common sense with the possible exception of the academics of the University of Western Australia.
This so particularly when it comes to energy policies .
Energy policies and common sense that is now apparently under real South Australian/ Vicistan levels of degradation as Mc Gowan of the Labor party has already suggested that WA’s energy will become 50% renewable , a policy based on “what” neither he nor the Labor party nor anybody else seems to know or have much idea about except it sounds like a good idea.

    So from WA a study dated June 2016, the latest date I could find for such studies which are already out of date as Australian energy prices go ballistic due to policies promoted by the grossly selfish, utterly self centred CAGW/ Climate Change “despicables ” of the climate warming cult;

    ***
    Energy Poverty in Western Australia

    [ Selectively quoted ]

    1.3 Measuring energy poverty
Cost and income measures have often formed the basis of energy (or fuel) poverty studies; for example, a household may be categorised as being in energy poverty if
it spends more than 10% of its disposable income on energy. This type of measure informs our understanding of the burden that energy expenditure has on a household and the extent to which it limits spending on other goods and services. It might o er insights into the feelings of vulnerability that household members are experiencing and may also provide a useful indicator of the risk faced by the household of having its energy supplies disconnected.
However, this measure tells us little about whether a household is curtailing its energy usage in a way that is detrimental to its wellbeing, contributing to its vulnerability.

    From the Summary;

The results of the analysis show there is little doubt that energy poverty is widespread. Low income households, already su ering from increased housing costs, are on average spending 12.4% of their income on utility bills and fuel each week, compared with 2.9% for high income households.
The survey findings pointed to a high incidence of households curtailing heating and cooling despite experiencing discomfort.
As discussed in section 1, a more appropriate indicator of energy poverty would take account of the required energy expenditure rather than actual expenditure as this measure might underestimate the extent of the energy burden. This result suggests that the depth and extent of energy poverty may be underestimated.

Interviews with householders revealed high levels of anxiety with respect to energy bills, with individuals borrowing money from friends or family ensure they do not fall into arrears.
They confirmed that many individuals seek to curtail their use of heating and cooling in order to reduce consumption despite suffering discomfort as a result.
Survey respondents also reported not attending social functions owing to the cost of transport fuel in getting to these events.
The implications of such social exclusion could be profound.
For many, not being able to access high e ciency appliances or solar panels as a means to reduce their energy expenditure was a source of frustration.
Financial constraints are the primary impediment to low income households achieving these benefits but the fact that low income households often rent also means they arenot at liberty to undertake the modifications that would be involved.
A number of interviewees also pointed to strata arrangements as a reason for not seeking to install solar panels.
This inability to benefit from the “low carbon dividend” presents the risk that those on lowest incomes will fall deeper into energy poverty as the cost per user of delivering energy services increases.
Providing greater assistance for low income households to access energy e cient appliances or to install insulation may present an opportunity to reduce the impact of energy poverty.
Similarly, support could be provided for investment in home generation such as solar panels.

    ___________

From a now relatively old surveyl;[ 2011 ] RELATIVE ENERGY POVERTY IN AUSTRALIA

The aim of this research project has been to examine responses to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2009-10 Household Expenditure Survey (HES) in order to identify those households considered to meet a range of alternative definitions of relative energy poverty: a cohort representing around 5-10% of households that can be considered to be most at risk of not keeping up as energy prices rise.
The distributional impacts of energy market reforms will always need to be assessed: it seems reasonable that it will always be important to continue to test the resilience of the safety nets and using relative energy poverty as a conceptual basis for this appears to be sound.

When reading this last para above, it is manifestly evident that the State and Federal politicians have FAILED almost to the point of criminal negligence in taking any recognisance of the energy poverty situation and its government policy created causes in Australia over the last few years.

The politicians and climate scientists who advise the politicians have failed the Australian people almost completely in that they have abandoned any pretext of caring for their constituents particularly in the lower earnings and social strata in favour of promoting energy policies that are highly detrimental to every aspect of Australian life, energy policies which at the very doubtful best might have a tiny fraction of a percentage influence on a the global climate sometime more than a half a century or more into the future.

ALL of the political policies as promoted by climate alarmist scientists and assorted pseudo climate “experts” are directed to the reducing of a highly beneficial and essential to life, so called, greenhouse gas, CO2 that at the very best and using completely unproven, unverified, unvalidated climate models that are now increasingly being recognised as having all most no relationship with the global climate in their predictions, to reducing Australia’s contribution to a future global climate half a century forward or more into the completely unpredictable future of a fraction of a percentage of any warming, IF such claimed warming is ever proven and validated through actual proven scientific analysis which so far after some three decades of very expensive tax payer funded research, the thousands of purported climate scientists have failed to do.

WE, the Australian people now come a very bad last in the eyes of the policy makers in politics and in climate science as compared to the fanatical concentration on some remote in time ahead, modelled only future climate change scenario that is claimed by scientific rent seekers will be, always “will be” of a catastrophic nature but for which NO valid evidence can be or is presented as being scientifically proven and indelibly validated by impartial critics and scientists.

Our red thumber has proven once again the nauseating callousness and completely self centred, self righteousness of the CAGW cultists and their total disregard for anybody and any other interests other than their own crass selves.

***oh dear…Irish people are AFRAID to let tradesmen into their homes!

8 Apr: Irish Times: Sylvia Thompson: Fuel poverty: finding an eco-solution
“Energy poverty is an environmental issue. It is an economic issue that blights lives, and energy efficiency is the most important means of tacking energy poverty,” said Minster for Communications, Climate Action and the Environment Denis Naughten at the recent Fuel Poverty & Climate Action conference, held in Dublin.
An estimated 400,000 households in Ireland suffer from fuel poverty, which is defined as spending at least 10 per cent of your income on keeping your home warm and comfortable…
The scientific and moral arguments for urgently responding to climate change were also clearly presented…

At the Fuel Poverty conference, Naughten said the Warmer Homes scheme will soon offer “deeper renovations with solid wall insulation, mechanical ventilation systems and renewable heating solutions”. The SEAI expects these free upgrades will be offered to low-income families, beginning this summer…
“It’s difficult and expensive to identify the fuel poor on the doorstep, so the best solution might be an area-based approach. By including everyone, you get those who are hiding, those who are leading chaotic lives and wouldn’t self-refer to a scheme,” said Dr Brenda Boardman, emeritus fellow from the Environmental Change Institute, Oxford University…
One-third of the fuel poor are living in privately rented accommodation or rented local authority homes. And according to Boardman, the majority of those living in fuel poverty are in G-rated homes.
“We need to bring these homes up to A or B [Building Energy Rating]… If you can’t eradicate fuel poverty in the next six years, you can’t do climate change. Ireland needs to tackle 150,000 properties a year every year for the next 30 years,” she said…

As the focus turns to educating people on how to live more energy-efficiently in their homes, the European Commission will open its first think tank on energy poverty later in 2017. Harriet Thomson, the co-ordinator of the European Energy Poverty Observatory, said the institute will give people information on the extent of energy poverty across Europe and measures to combat it.
“It is widely agreed that energy poverty across Europe is due to high energy prices, low household incomes, inefficient buildings and appliances and specific household energy needs,” she told the Fuel Poverty and Climate Action conference…

Gerald Sinnott is delighted with the free insulation upgrades he got in his home in Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow…
Some of his neighbours have since followed his example and gotten free attic insulation.
***“People are often afraid to get work done and let tradesmen into their homes. But with this scheme, they call you and give you a time and date and the foreman comes and check the work afterwards,” says Sinnott.

Installing the insulation in Ireland seems a step up from the pink batts are burning in OZ.

Other experts argue that people need to be educated on how to manage their homes when upgrades are put in place.

“If we want people to live in healthy home environments, we need to give them skills to do so,” said Norman Kerr, director of Energy Action, Scotland.

“Things like turning the heating down and not opening windows, controlling the heat from source at the boiler and not adding large amounts of cold water just so you can put your hand in a sink of hot water to wash the dishes.”

And these very same people wonder why Brexit and Trump happened?

These guys are stupid and it’s supposed to be OUR problem??? I don’t think so. If there’s any anxiety and depression out there, it’s probably got something to with the scary stories the alarmists have been peddling over the years.

Another source of depression may be them realising that the gravy train is out of steam.

    Cheers,

The type of people that allow such drivel to effect the quality of their daily lives would quickly find something else to keep their miserable out look on life even if the whole climate change scam collapsed tomorrow. Look what they must do now to maintain their climate change agony. They must ignore the pause, ignore the fact that the models the whole scam is based upon are terribly wrong compared to observations and that the divergence between the model projections and observations is increasing, ignore paleo climate evidence, ignore known human history and weather events of the past, ignore that no permanent hot spot has been found in upper troposphere over the tropics, ignore the fact that the polar ice caps still exist, and ignore very fact that they aren’t burning up. And some, like those in S. Australia must ignore the fact that the measures be taken by the government to supposedly combat what they fear are effecting their quality of life far more than anything that the climate or weather has done to them in recent times.
Tony Heller has produced this 5 minute video on how extreme the weather can be in the absence of 400 ppm Co2 by showing what happened in the US in 1936. It was the most extreme year for weather in the US since records began. And despite the fact that people are still alive that lived through those events, it would be considered ancient history that is not relevant to the current times by those that wish to maintain their agonized out look on their existence and that of mankind.
This video is well worth the five minutes of your time it will take to view it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQXSNhevWr8

    Sorry.
Visible in the north the cyclone will move in the direction of New Zealand and connect with cool low from the south. There will be a lot of rain.

More flooding rains were possible next week in New Zealand especially towards Thursday and Good Friday, Duncan said.

“When we think of cyclones we tend to think of major wind and rain events, however by the time they reach New Zealand more often than not it’s the rain that causes the bulk of the issues,” Duncan said.

“Cook is not a very big cyclone size-wise – but it has a huge amount of moisture wrapped around it.”

Later next week Cook’s rain belt will connect with a sizeable low in the Tasman Sea pulling in very heavy rains which will be heavy enough to cause further serious flooding in New Zealand.

So, self-proclaimed experts make a comfortable living by making dire predictions about forthcoming disaster. I remember the bloke who used to wander up and down the centre of Liverpool in a sandwich-board, declaring, “The End is Nigh.” What I don’t recall is his being breathlessly quoted by the UN, or the press, or his being invited to make alarmist documentaries for the telly.

For decades now, a succession of doom-mangers has been trooping through the world’s television studios, likewise foretelling the End of Times. The synchronicity of the fall of the Berlin Wall, ending the Cold War, and the sudden rise of green alarmism has been well noted. In the U.K., we also had “Listeria Hysteria” and the BSE scare story, with one Richard Lacey proclaiming that “a whole generation” of people could be lost to the disease. That was in 1998, a year the alarmists generally seem keen to forget.

Only today, there is a headline in the Daily Telegraph , “‘Zero prospect’ of recovery as Great Barrier Reef corals suffer bleaching for second successive year.” The headline alone is a slippery one, as it suggests that the entire reef is doomed, which is what both the climate “scientists” and the hack at the DT want readers to think. If you have lapped up all the other scares over the years, however, if you are convinced that more than seventeen million British voters are rabid brownshirts, if you suffer from full-blown Trump Derangement Syndrome and then put all that together with the things that actually are wrong in the world, you probably are having a bad day.

That “Zero prospect, again… Is that the same “zero prospect” of rain, as in Queensland, or California, or am I confusing it with the “zero prospect” that a child born in the U.K. circa 2000 would ever know what snow looked like?
