All Australians “are detrimental”. Climate Scientist worries that her baby will cause floods, droughts, and warm globe

After years of struggle to conceive, plus tortured introspection about the effect her baby might have on future storms, Sophie Lewis, climate scientist, announces conception in the most convoluted way:

And then, just as senselessly as our grief began, it ended. For no particular reason, the expected bad baby news never arrived and now the complexity of having an imagined child will become a concrete ethical entanglement.

Exactly. And many a climate model operates with all the same clarity and insight.

But sincere congratulations to Sophie Lewis. We hope her good news brings her  years of joy.

We also pray she escapes the climate bubble soon. Because by golly, she’s in deep.

Lewis reveals the paroxysms of irreconcilable guilt — where the evolutionary drive conflicts with the climate religion:

Older climate scientists speak widely about their worries for their grandchildren and the world they have provided them. While such concerns must weigh on older minds, younger climate scientists’ future concerns require active deliberation. Should we have children? And if we do, how do we raise them in a world of change and inequity? Can I reconcile my care and concern for the future with such an active and deliberate pursuit of a child?

Put simply, I can’t. Nowadays, the pitter-patter of tiny feet is inevitably the pitter-patter of giant carbon footprints. Reusable nappies, a bike trailer and secondhand jumpsuits might make me feel like I’m taking individual action but they will achieve little. A child born today is inevitably a consumer and, most significantly, is a consumer of greenhouse gases.

Warning. Pure climate-princess material coming — The climate battle is like World War II:

Living in and starting a family in volatile and uncertain times are not unique experiences. My grandmother fled Europe in the early 1950s for a better life in Australia. A German Jew, her family had been scattered, with herself interned in Britain, her sister lost in Auschwitz and her family’s desperate flight rebuffed by an indifferent world. Years of horror, combined with strict rations and economic uncertainty drove her to strike out bravely for a new life in Australia with her young babies.

But there was icing on the cake of the abject horror then — No such luck now:

Climate change is a critically different problem. In my grandmother’s time of abject horror, good people were empowered – to varying degrees – to do good. After the war ended, the actions of just a few were recognised as having salvaged the honour of all our humanity. Nowadays, the very act of living in Australia, regardless of concern for our climate future, is detrimental.

Now there are no heroes, just climate prophets (who can’t seem to predict anything useful) and whose bodily existence, like everyone else, including babies “is detrimental”

Indeed, to paraphase her baby announcement:

And then, just as senselessly as our grief began, it ended. For no particular reason, the expected bad climate news never arrived and now the complexity of having an imagined climate has become a concrete ethical entanglement.

I’m worried having a baby will make climate change worse — Sydney Morning Herald. Where else?

Those warmists who fear that a child,
Could leave our green planet defiled,
Or that one baby primate,
Could change Earth’s whole climate,
Are by climate-change hot air beguiled.

This is why Greens believe in depopulation and the economy-destroying and civilisation-destroying (by inappropriate immigration and policies hostile to traditional values) policies to achieve it.

In Germany, they are replacing the indigenous Germans with people from elsewhere. German women feel compelled to work and delay having kids because their taxes are so high. The taxes are high because it largely goes on subsidizing those on welfare.

Out of the millions of immigrants, it seems that few of them have proper jobs

Survey reveals Germany’s top companies employ just 54 refugees

        Manfred,
There is no such thing as an indigenous German or Frenchman, Italian etc. Humans have been always been migrating, you, a German, are currently in Melbourne (?) stealing our jobs ?. Nationalism has a poor historical record.
Also, where did you get your facts from to claim that taxes are high largely due to welfare ?.

Really? Up until 1950, Britain was by and large homogeneous. With relatively small immigration over a thousand years, you could rightly say they were and indigenous population. Similarly even today Japan is very largely homogeneous. You are talking rubbish.

In the long run, in theory maybe, at short term there is a significant difference between for example being an indigenous or native American, and not being one. It is about rights, you are allowed to have everything the majority has, but the majority is not allowed to have what the minority has. Unless the minority is white aka the supressor, in which case the majority is allowed to socialize. The rules are complicated and include gender, Europeanness, majority/minority, history, etc. But be sure white hetero men are always loosing in confontation if you ask a left winger.

    Unbelievable – to quote:

! – Reusable nappies – YES just like EVERYONE in past generations – They’re called cloth nappies Sophie
2 – A bike trailer (doesn’t everyone use them? LOL) – how about walking with a pram just like “used” to happen
3 – Second hand jump suits – They’re called “hand me downs” Sophie probably a new concept for you!

In fact, I for one are delighted people like Sophie Lewis are opting out of the baby “thing” – the world will be a better place if her and her “partner” DON’T have a baby.

It is sometimes referred to as existential angst.

If you are not feeling miserable and guilty about your life, and the lives of those around you, then you are obviously not trying hard enough.

Existential angst is embodied in the story of Adam and Eve, and the serpent who banned them from all that was good. It has flowed through the river of history ever since that time.

Feeling guilty about life events is just part of a defence mechanism in response to experiencing pleasure, when we tell ourselves that we should be experiencing remorse.

It’s the stupid foolishness of idolatry, the corrosive influence of the Big Lie as described so accurately by Solzhenitsyn, that accounts for this pitiable poverty of soul.

As in so many crucial matters, there really are exactly to alternatives: fear God and dread nought, or fear everything and be pressed by guilt into the mold of doing more and more evil. God save her and her family!

    Double standards.
The grandmother’s deprivations favoured climate change principles of lower consumption.
The grandmother rejectedbthe enforced changes that favoured climate change remediation and opted for less restrained, climate damaging freedom in Australia.

      She agonises is alright
It seems for Sophie, her postnatal depression may have started prenatal so perhaps a talk with her doctor is a good idea.

Sophie has time to write depressing whimsy right now but after arrival of the baby she won’t. She’ll be too busy running around after nappies and losing sleep. Climate Change™ will then be relegated to last on the list (number 14) of things we worry about . . just like every survey has shown.

So, in that sense, I’d expect having a baby will bring some perspective to Sophie’s life.

Griffo, it is easy to find that North Korea tested its first nuclear weapon in 2006 and launched a satellite in 2016. They claim to have thermonuclear weapons (H bombs) and that too is probably true or soon to be true. They claim they have miniaturized both atomic and hydrogen bombs to be delivered by IRBMs and ICBMs.
I have heard doubts about their claims for their missiles to carry hydrogen bombs but few if any doubts about their IRBMs to carry atomic warheads.
So the question is not when they will have nuclear weapons and missiles to carry them, but how near are to meeting all of their boasts and claims.

I would accept her argument except for four bits of basic physics’ misunderstanding in the IPCC pseudoscience.

Following early 1-D modelling by Manabe et al. which experimented with various atmospheric ideas:……..

    1. In 1969 (Hansen) made a fundamental error in aerosol optical physics: this reversed the sign of the 2nd AIE so he and others thought higher [CCN] increased cloud albedo, offsetting raised surface temperatures as [CO2] increased, hiding CO2 warming. This mechanism accounts for the ~3.5 times amplification of Milankovitch warming at the end of ice ages and the rapid warming of the planet in the 1980s and 1990s as Asian aerosol output surged. The planet reacted by ocean current change; hence some Arctic melting and more Antarctic snow.

    2. In 1976 Cess made a fundamental error by claiming the atmosphere absorbed surface IR: this led to 40% rise in atmospheric radiation so Earth’s emissivity became 0.6. This paper should never have been passed by peer review because OLR emissivity has to be unity. Hansen also admitted that the requirement for a finite temperature drop, surface to local atmosphere, could not be measured experimentally, so GISS models it!

    3. Also in 1976, GISS used Manabe’s 1-D computation with negative convection and got the same CO2 Climate Sensitivity. 24 years later Hansen admitted there can be no negative convection but 3-D models devised by UK’s Met Office (done under contract by the late husband of its recent Chief Scientist) were fine. However this Kirchhoff’s Law of Radiation approach used the incorrect cloud aerosol optical physics to create down atmospheric window IR. The same error leads to imaginary positive feedback.

    4. Ultimately, it all comes down to a failure to understand that Planck, Bose and Einstein’s correct radiative physics only applies to a vacuum. I shall explain later why GHG-containing atmospheres shift the partial or fully self-absorbed (at sea level) GHG OLR emitting surface to many kms altitude. Other independent scientists, or retirees, have concluded this but keep quiet about it for fear of being considered lunatics. But it’s easy to prove by a radiative energy and entropy balance, possibly an optimum radiation entropy production rate.

The latest claim is that the unknown outer planet now allegedly hurtling to the Earth’s orbit will lead to Armageddon, hence US CEOs have bought up New Zealand boltholes. Or will Armageddon come from Asteroid impact? Another possibility is reduced solar magnetic field allowing more cosmic rays to enter the Earth’s atmosphere, causing more clouds, higher albedo!

      I like number 4.

It is sad to have “climate scientists” pump values into the S_B equation to prove something or other, and then deduce, from that, that WE DID IT.

      NO WE DIDN’T.

It is quantitatively impossible for humans to influence the CO2 levels of the atmosphere and this argument itself is made irrelevant by the activity of the overwhelming “greenhouse gas” WATER.

And eventually we must concede that even water can’t make absolute changes because the whole system is determined by the orbital mechanics of our solar system.

What is the AIE let alone the 2nd AIE and I assume OLR stands for outgoing Long Infra-Red? Perhaps David Evans could provide an answer to your points? As for KK talking about his S_B equation, that’s Son of a Bitch equation obviously?

This posting of abbreviated techno-crap with no data, no equations, no references, no explanations, no examinable argument, just aggressive conclusions, is why journos and even main-stream climate scientists WILL NOT LOOK AT THIS BLOG SITE let alone believe the claims made in it!

The scientific comprehension of climate issues by people posting on this site is often excellent but the communication skills are close to ZERO. We may have won the scientific argument long ago but we are losing the political argument BADLY! No such thing as climate science degree. It comes under Environmental science and has an entry scope at the 55 Pentium percentile of the high school graduate population IE in the lowest 50%. Engineers on the other hand have entry scores around the 25th percentile. There is nothing smart about climate scientists. Journalism entrants are drawn from around the 40th percentile so arts/journalism students are smarter than your average climate scientist.

“Dr Sophie Lewis is a climate scientist and research fellow at the Australian National University”
She is seriously messed up. I actually feel sorry for her, but more importantly the blame for her confusion is the complete breakdown of science and the scientific method at the large scale group level. The associations, the unions, the schools, the committees. The houses of learning that should have thought “This new graph of Mann’s is very different to every other historical reconstruction that has ever been done. I wonder if it’s wrong?”.

I guess this demonstrates that learning a book by rote and passing an exam doesn’t instil knowledge of any kind. She needs to understand history, logic and reasoning in equal measures.

It’s true she has every opportunity to test her knowledge, but she does not. She looks very young, so she’s obviously fresh out of the indoctrination collages. This was also my point about the difference between education, and knowledge. She’s been educated (read the prescribed text and quoted it back at exam time), but she has no knowledge of history, philosophy or logic. It is clearly quite beyond her assess what she things she knows.

I feel sorry for her because she is so messed up but has no skill to find the truth of the matter. And that is an education failing.

I have no idea why you think a particular art form has anything to do with this.

Why were you looking up the periodic table anyway? It is just a list organised into a logical form, it isn’t actually a thing you look up for a particular reason. If you wanted to look up some aspect of calcium you’d generally look up calcium’s chemic-physical properties some other way. Unless the periodic table was some giant poster, it would contain only some basic info.

Those things are not written into the periodic table. The table is a structure that represents characteristics of the elements. The details you speak of are found elsewhere in very thick books containing lots of other data. When you look up that stuff you are not looking up a table

“A random thought on your block of dry ice. Its dimensions will be immediately reduced by sublimation.”

You can claim such, but immediately can not happen even at room temperatures.
At 194.66 K. sublimation is very slow and ceases at pressures above 3 MPa.

“Our packaging dry ice is more like the ones shown in this video – I’ve decided to repeat this using the microwaves in the lab… OMG CAGW. ”

Indeed many, but never the troll Gee Aye.

“The frozoned CO2 seems to be unaffected by the heavy duty radiation from the microwave.”

H2O absorbs much 2.45 GHz that the oven produces, CO2 absorbs almost nothing! Nor do the oven walls, even though that 2.45 GHz has a brightness temperature generally over 600K. Easy to boil water!

“The next part of the experiment is to get the solid CO2 in the path of a good IR source. What then? ”

A good IR source is a gas CO2 laser, 10.6 microns wavelength, and brightness temperature well over 20,000K. Melts steel. Still the solid CO2 would absorb very little, as EMR is never heat! If a surface of that solid CO2 had curvature the beam would focus (convex) or disperse (concave). Do not try this at home!! 😉
Why oh why are there folk like Gee Aye, that would rather believe a TV talking-head, rather than find someone with some experience? Even ‘mommy’ is better than TV or professors!

Climate science evolved from the arts faculties (Geography) but it’s clear Sophie doesn’t know how to think, only what to think.

She might also contemplate what drives some people to anti-semitism – or for that matter anti-anything. Someone being anti-something means not liking the activities of the object of their concern. For example one might be anti-cannibal for the simple reason one fears meeting a cannibal and becoming the evening meal. So anti-religious means not appreciating religion being forced onto you. Anti-Hun would mean not appreciating the aesthetic sensitivities of vandalism.

Perhaps its because the arts don’t really understand human action in the first place that is the problem.

For me the really genuine paragraph in Sophie’s post was the last one :
“Nonetheless, in recognising the sadness of our near neighbours, I also feel compelled to recognise the beauty and opportunity of my own life.
Despite my uncomfortable internal conflicts, the impending arrival of a much-wanted baby is intensely joyful.”

If I as a male can feel all other intellectual problems disappear into relative insignificance when holding a new born baby how
much more will it affect the female who gave it life?
For the next 10 years Sophie will concentrate on matters far more important than “climate change” and after that , well , the scare will have been resolved , one way or another.
Wish you and the baby well Sophie

This is one of the saddest post I have ever read. I do hope that last paragraph is truly genuine and extirpates her perverse perception that the child she carries is a bane on humanity rather than its salvation.
“I hope today’s children, born of a complex admixture of anxiety, guilt and fear, but all the while fiercely desired, can do better than their parents did.”
I certainly hope her child will and at least take the slightest interest in the history of their family and the whole world. Did Sophie NEVER talk to her grandmother about the world as it was and compare it with the world as it is now. My daughters , for school project, “interviewed” their grandmothers about life London 1940-45, including being on the receiving end of ballistic missiles. Somehow Sophie feels two hot springs in Australia portend doom for her child.

      http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2212094715300293

I note that she has specialised in evaluating climate models. She was obviously impressed since these are central to her above foray into psychology.

” I demonstrate that observed temperature characteristics are irreconcilable with the personal perception-based understanding of extremes as artefacts only of natural climate variability. In addition to showing that the perception-based understanding of climate change and extremes adopted by Abbott (i.e., the Natural Variability Concept) is not fully consistent with the observed time series,”

Wow “not fully consistent” – grant money well spent.

“Directly addressing the misplaced foundational beliefs of the Natural Variability Concept, however, may help accurately communicate aspects of climate extremes more clearly to those open to learning from personal experiences.”

      Good luck in that.

Reuseable nappies in the copper boiler (coal fired), 8 a day (at least), two hour feeds with little time to sleep in between. The joys of mastitis.

The proposition in short is that humans can override natural climate variables
by tweaking a trace gas Co2 that currently represents fraction of 1 % of the atmosphere .
Is that basically it ? While in pretend mode and assuming the true believers in the scary global warming cult
were absolutely right would each country get to vote on a temperature that suits them ? Would some
like the great white north benefit from a titch more warming while those in the middle east prefer
cooling ? After all if humans could actually whip up a climate temperature receipt who would win out at setting the temperature ?
A committee , the biggest army ,the highest GDP ? Shouldn’t we just admit Mother Nature will balance all those conflicting
business interests and we will just work with it . We can clean up plastic ,sewer discharge, street gum and leave the heavy lifting

    Ambers post above is gold:

“if humans could whip up a climate recipe” who would win the contest?

The widely used climate “models” of the current hysteria take a pinch of this and a pinch of that and unsubtlely fold in large quantities of IMMIR (imaginary man made IR).

    They aren’t MODELS.

Even the very basic assessment provided by the quantification of the top IR predators goes ignored:

    1. Water at 96% of absorption

    2. Total CO2 at just over 3% and

    3. Human origin CO2 is maybe, at the most, 4% of total CO2 at 2 above. Nature beats us 96/4 in that game.

    Sadly, we humans are insignificant.

But, but, but… Her written thesis is soooo convincing… The referencing is immaculately laid out.

        • #
          bobl

Just a point for the readers, the 97/3 split on natural vs human CO2 is subject to massive uncertainty. Natural Co2 emission has an error of IIRC 16% so the amount of uncertainty in natural emission is about 4 times the total of human emission!

          11

          • #
            KinkyKeith

I can easily see that as the case Bob.

The main thing is that human origin CO2 is very small and is wholly reabsorbed or sequestered in 4.5 years.

Of course that’s the air we breathe, the oceans are another whole ball game.

            11

      • #
        StefanL

        Ross,
I think what KK means is that CO2 accounts for only 3% of the total IR absorption by the atmosphere, while water vapour accounts for 96% (remaining 1% is due to methane, etc)

        20

    • #

Water isn’t as high as 96%, even when clouds are considered. For the clear sky, water vapor is about 2/3 of the total GHG effect and CO2 is most of the rest. Considering 2/3 of the planet is covered by clouds and clouds absorb on average about 70% of the photons emitted by the surface. The total contribution by water is,

      1/3*2/3 + 2/3*.70 + 2/3*2/3*.30 = 82%

which is still relatively large …

The fact that clouds absorb surface energy and re-emit it back to the surface in much the same way as GHG’s do seems to be universally ignored by climate alarmists. The ONLY difference is that GHG’s are narrow band absorbers and emitters while clouds are broad band absorbers and emitters.

        CO2 ine

There is a retired IR specialist who gives relative absorption as per the figures I used. He measured them.

As for “backradiation” ? Most clouds are going to be 5 C cooler than ground.

        11

        • #

          kk,
Temperature doesn’t matter, Even at 5K colder, clouds are still radiating photons to the surface. The transfer of photons is different from the transfer of vibrational heat energy, which only goes from hot to cold. If you have an exoplanet with 2 Suns, each providing an average of 150 W/m^2, the total incident power would be 300 W/m^2.

The point is that the ‘temperature’ of the ‘back radiation’ is irrelevant. All that matters is Joules, or the energy input as W/m^2, and Joules obey the property of superposition, that is, the average system behavior measured in Joules of output is mostly linear to Joules of input.

          20

          • #
            KinkyKeith

I appreciate that photons may be radiated towards the surface that is warmer than the point of origin.

The question is just how far do they get?

            10

            • #

              kk,

“The question is just how far do they get?”

Referring to the photons, it depends on the wavelength. If it’s in the transparent region (about half of the possible wavelengths), then the photon gets all the way to the surface at the speed of light. Otherwise, it will be intercepted by a GHG on the way to the surface, bounce around between GHG molecules and the photons energy will eventually either end up at the surface or back to the cloud in roughly equal proportions, albeit as a different photon.

Can you define a “photon” please? Einstein admitted he could not; and never accepted the notion! The very first claim of thermal EM flux being emitted independent of opposing ‘radiance’ at any frequency came from a physics text by Goody (1964) based on a theory by Satyendranath Bose wrote a paper in 1924 in which he derived Planck’s quantum radiation law without referencing classical physics, and never referencing any electromagnetic by J.C. Maxwell! Thermal EM flux is never emitted in a direction of higher ‘radiance’ at any frequency.

Otherwise, it will be intercepted by a GHG on the way to the surface, bounce around between GHG molecules and the photons energy will eventually either end up at the surface or back to the cloud in roughly equal proportions, albeit as a different photon.”

What total nonsense by the CAGW scammers! Again you reference fantasy ‘photons’ and claim they come in various ‘colors’. If physical, where can I buy an assortment of 64, like crayons? In industry the term ‘photon energy’ refers to a unit of Planck action (h)/(the time interval of one cycle of flux) at any frequency! Such has nothing to do with Einstein’s “photoelectric effect”, except for the ‘concept of power density’! Photoelectric effect depends on the electron emission ‘work function’ of the absorbing matter.

                Will,

Photons are readily defined as a bundle of EM energy whose energy is equal to Planck’s constant times the frequency (E = hv). EM energy is readily quantified by Maxwell’s equations as orthogonal, time varying electric and magnetic fields and an associated inductance and capacitance. Quantum mechanics (specifically Schroedinger’s wave equation) combined with EM physics quantifies photons in a very precise manner, so your assertion that photons do not exist is incorrect, especially since you can’t otherwise explain the evidence that they do.

What makes them hard to understand for those who can only comprehend flat space-time is that they do not exist at a point in time or space, but exists concurrently across a volume of space proportional to its wavelength and a region of time proportional to its period where Planck’s constant, h, quantifies both the energy required to spread out across space-time (hv) and its imprecise existence in the form of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.

The fact that macroscopic radiation laws can be approximately inferred classically is much like how Newton’s Law of gravitation approximately describes gravity across narrow conditions, while GR describes it over all possible conditions, so your point is moot.

The impedance of free space is given by Z0=sqrt(u0/e0) and approximately equal to 377 ohms. The impedance of the volume of space-time occupied by a photon, is Zp = Zo/a, where a is the fine structure constant where Zp becomes about 52K ohms. Zp is also the resonant impedance of the EQUIVALENT L and C of the photon as constrained by its required energy (hv).

Interestingly enough, if you consider the fine structure constant a scalar metric of a space-time curvature applied to the space-time occupied by a photon, it warps the geometry in such a way that the equivalent L of half the space-time occupied by the photon increases as the equivalent C of the other half decreases and the resulting impedance at resonance becomes Z0/a. Note that this is the fundamental connection between gravity (space-time curvature) and electromagnetics.

FYI, I am nothing close to a CAGW scammer, but I clearly understand that the GHG effect is finite and completely quantified as the actions of photons. The effect is just no where as large as claimed, but is certainly not zero. Claiming that it is zero is counterproductive to the skeptical cause and supplies ammunition to the alarmists to dismiss all opposition.

Just because alarmist get climate science wrong, doesn’t mean all of science is broken. There’s far too much evidence that photons exist to casually dismiss them just because you don’t understand them or you think that you can make the GHG effect disappear by denying their existence.

“Will, Photons are readily defined as a bundle of EM energy whose energy is equal to Planck’s constant times the frequency (E = hv).”

That is the engineering definition of an “EMR quantum”, never a photon, except as an inside joke. For Einstein’s nickel electron emission, near room temperature, Takes absorption of between 5-7 of 450nm quanta before electron emission. It is the emission of the electron that is the characteristic of photoelectric effect. The quantum is a unit of “action”, the energy transfer within a fixed time interval, also known as power density in four-space!

“EM energy is readily quantified by Maxwell’s equations as orthogonal, time varying electric and magnetic fields and an associated inductance and capacitance.”

What glorious nonsense! You write of EM field strength (potential) only, never of flux. Any emitted flux is always limited to the difference in opposing potentials at each frequency.

“Quantum mechanics (specifically Schroedinger’s wave equation) combined with EM physics quantifies photons in a very precise manner, so your assertion that photons do not exist is incorrect, especially since you can’t otherwise explain the evidence that they do.”

What EM physics quantifies what does not exist? All measurable EM flux (a macroscopic property) completely explains all EMR effect that can be measured, or ever has been detected.

“What makes them hard to understand for those who can only comprehend flat space-time is that they do not exist at a point in time or space, but exists concurrently across a volume of space proportional to its wavelength and a region of time proportional to its period where Planck’s constant, h, quantifies both the energy required to spread out across space-time (hv) and its imprecise existence in the form of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.”

That is quite correct for an EMR quantum. Such ‘may’ or ‘may not’ result in a change in “photoelectric effect” (electron emission) from say heated thorium that is already emitting electrons do to thermionic emission! Why would anyone seriously call such a “photon”? OTOH the generation of a minority carrier in a cold lattice structure with defects is observable and sometimes countable with an electron microscope.

“The fact that macroscopic radiation laws can be approximately inferred classically is much like how Newton’s Law of gravitation approximately describes gravity across narrow conditions, while GR describes it over all possible conditions, so your point is moot.”

You seem to forget that all EM radiative flux is by definition a macroscopic, never microscopic effect. A watt/m² is macroscopic. A 0.1ev/(s x mm²) is likely microscopic.

“The impedance of free space is given by Z0=sqrt(u0/e0) and approximately equal to 377 ohms. The impedance of the volume of space-time occupied by a photon, is Zp = Zo/a, where a is the fine structure constant where Zp becomes about 52K ohms. Zp is also the resonant impedance of the EQUIVALENT L and C of the photon as constrained by its required energy (hv).”

Just what may you mean by EQUIVALENT L and C of a 450 nm photon quantum constrained by its required assumed energy (hv)? ‘Z0=sqrt(u0/e0)’ is but some gross assumption that both u0 and e0 remain constant in other than local space-time. Can you describe why such assumption i9s in fact viable!

“Interestingly enough, if you consider the fine structure constant a scalar metric of a space-time curvature applied to the space-time occupied by a photon, it warps the geometry in such a way that the equivalent L of half the space-time occupied by the photon increases as the equivalent C of the other half decreases and the resulting impedance at resonance becomes Z0/a. Note that this is the fundamental connection between gravity (space-time curvature) and electromagnetics.”

Such is fine conjecture and is somewhat arithmetically consistent with some measurements, thus possible. Can you please show where such conjecture has ever been physically observed or measured.

“FYI, I am nothing close to a CAGW scammer, but I clearly understand that the GHG effect is finite and completely quantified as the actions of photons. The effect is just no where as large as claimed, but is certainly not zero.”

As long as you claim opposing thermal flux at any frequency, you indeed have been brainwashed, like most recent academics, into actually being a CAGW scammer! Can you actually provide even one demonstration of opposing thermal flux?

“Claiming that it is zero is counter productive to the skeptical cause and supplies ammunition to the alarmists to dismiss all opposition.”

I could care less about fake skeptics that clearly demonstrate no more ability to learn beyond brainwashing, than the alarmists! Sh*tcan all!

                Will,

“The quantum is a unit of “action”, the energy transfer within a fixed time interval, also known as power density in four-space!”

What we consider a photon is the projection into flat space-time of a resonance in curved space-time, where energy stored in this resonance is quantified by E = 1/2 CV^2 = hv where v = 1/sqrt(LC), sqrt(u0/e0)/a = sqrt(L/C), V = q0/C and h, a, e0, u0 and q0 are fundamental constants. Note that the fine structure constant, a, can be expressed as the ratio of impedances, Z0/Zp, where Z0 = sqrt(u0/e0) and Zp = q0^2/2h. Note also that a = 1/Q, where Q is the Q factor of the resonant curved space-time relative to flat space-time. E and v are readily measured and the constraints of Maxwell’s equations combined with E=hv solves for everything else.

The resonance can also be quantified as a solution to GR where the stress energy tensor representation of a photon is equivalent to a curvature tensor representing equal and opposite amounts of space-time, half more curved and the other half less curved than the space-time the photon is passing through.

Regarding the constant nature of e0 and u0 is that they reflect the values for flat space time which is constant. To change them requires warping the geometries relative to the observing frame and this is what the energy of the photons existence does.

I don’t know what you mean by “As long as you claim opposing thermal flux at any frequency”. Photon fluxes do not oppose each other since photons are bundles of energy and energy can be neither created or destroyed. This is why interference patterns arise instead of absolute wave cancellation and the ‘brightness’ of the interference patterns still reflect the combined energy of the interfering photon streams.

“What we consider a photon is the projection into flat space-time of a resonance in curved space-time,”

What you mean by ‘we’ white man? Are you pregnant or have mice in your pockets? Perhaps you refer to some self appointed elite academic consensus that ignores any ‘scientific method’, in favor of abstract fantasy! How does your we, conflict with my above quote? your ‘fake photon’ is identical to my observable, measurable electromagnetic radiative quantum? Why insist on some ‘fake term photon’ when no-one outside of your ‘consensus group’ have any clue as to what you may be expressing? What extreme hubris\audacity\arrogance from self appointed elite!

“where energy stored in this resonance is quantified by E = 1/2 CV^2 = hv where v = 1/sqrt(LC), sqrt(u0/e0)/a = sqrt(L/C), V = q0/C and h, a, e0, u0 and q0 are fundamental constants. So what? Fine alphabet soup! OTOH you can demonstrate nothing physical of your fantasy!

“I don’t know what you mean by “As long as you claim opposing thermal flux at any frequency”.

Thermal EMR flux is defined as macroscopic EM power transfer through a determined cross sectional area normal to such power transfer. Not only does opposing flux not exist, such must violate the very definition of the word “flux”!

“Photon fluxes do not oppose each other since photons are bundles of energy and energy can be neither created or destroyed. This is why interference patterns arise instead of absolute wave cancellation and the ‘brightness’ of the interference patterns still reflect the combined energy of the interfering photon streams.”

What total nonsense! The interference patterns as measured, clearly demonstrate the limitation of flux by any opposing “field strength” aka ‘radiance’!

Thank you for your patience! Can you provide, not theory, but actual evidence that physically exists or even can exist some radiative GHG effect?

“but your extreme intransigence per your belief that the surface temperature is solely a function of the lapse rate”

I have never claimed such! The static atmospheric gravitational temperature lapse has been clearly demonstrated to exist in any planetary atmosphere with pressure above 20kPa. That static lapse is wildly modified by any atmospheric motion, latent heat, and of course atmospheric EMR exitance to space.

“and that most of EM theory and Quantum Mechanics is wrong means that you’ll never understand the relevant physics.”

All of EM theory and confirming measurement is clearly defined in J C Maxwell’s 22 quaternion equations. The four John Pointing vector equations, as now taught, completely discard all of the imbedded Lorentz invariance in the 22 by Maxwell! Such simplification also discards the important distinction between an EM field strength and the similar looking EM flux.
Almost all educational Quantum Mechanics is but quantum nonsense. If not assisted by good experience\learning of elapsed time conjugate -1/t!

“You also need to learn how to argue with facts, rather than with insults. When you argue with insults it just presents the impression that you have no facts to support your position or dispute the opposing position.”

When have you ever presented any physical fact? All you seem to have is pink unicorn fantasy. OTOH I generally write only of some alternate POV (mine) for your consideration or not. I truly have nothing to sell!

“The theory that half of the radiation absorbed by the atmosphere is returned to the surface as photons and the remaining half escapes to space is unconditionally and incontrovertibly validated with satellite data.”

Can you ever get a clue to physical evidence instead of your obscene fantasy? Can you even define evidence? Your ‘satellite data’ can only indicate crude spectral exitance from below with detectors having very low self ‘radiance’, and even this corrected by calibration! Such sensors cannot detect any of your claimed atmospheric absorption nor any actual surface emission at any wavelength where there can possibly be some radiant attenuation. It is impossible for such sensors to distinguish surface flux through the atmosphere from flux emitted to space from the atmosphere! Beside your satellite cannot measure any of your foolishly claimed returned flux, for two reasons. 1) looking the wrong way. 2) there is no such returned flux!

“Feel free to try and explain this otherwise.: https://wattsupwiththat.com/2017/01/05/physical-constraints-on-the-climate-sensitivity/

Ha! What is there to explain? from your reference:

For matter that’s absorbing and emitting energy, the emissions consequential to its temperature can be calculated exactly using the Stefan-Boltzmann Law,
                1) P = εσT^4

Firstly, there is no S-B Law, only a S-B equation with two temperature terms enclosed in required parenthesis, to force proper evaluation! P = εσ(T1^4-T2^4)… Proper evaluation would resolve both the difference in radiance (magnitude) and direction of the only permitted one way flux! That ε is a complex term involving the spectral emissivity of both ‘flat surfaces’ plus attenuation of the any intervening medium! Secondly, The author of that article is spouting only the Climate Clown mantra which has no possible scientific merit! Thirdly, You in every comment. in that article spout only the Climate Clown mantra, although many others tried to correct your errors, hence they also have no possible scientific merit!

“You might also try and explain the double slit experiment without invoking Quantum Mechanics.”

Oh goodie! The double slit experiment is definite falsification of your claim of ‘photon energy’ = (hv). (hv) is only one quantum of EMR flux.

EMR is always generated as a spherical wavefront of many many cycles! if left alone such wavefront simply expands at the speed of light with no interference only flux diminishing at 1/r². However, through two or more equally spaced slits that wavefront regenerates itself as a new spherical wavefront at each slit but each with a coherence interval similar to the original wavefront. The projected spectral intensity “irradiance” is filled with interference patterns functions of frequency, slit spacing, and new projection radius! all physically demonstrable (evidence) every day all over the world! No quantum creepiness there at all!

“There are many other validations of QM including the absorption/emission spectrum of Hydrogen based on Schroedinger’s wave equation which is derived from quantum mechanical considerations.”

I have no problem with any of the Quantum versions as long as they remain strictly ‘theoretical’ until physically demonstrable! You OTOH seem to promote any WAG that your cubie mate agrees therewith; a consensus! 🙂

                Will,
If you can’t accept the results of the scientific method, then there’s no purpose continuing. Testing and falsification are how physics evolves and you have not falsified any of my hypotheses, while first principles physics falsifies yours.

BTW, you could not be more wrong about SB not being a Law and Quantum Mechanics being strictly theoretical. Not only is SB a Law, it can be derived from first principles. Semiconductors, superconductors, atomic energy, absorption/emission line physics, the LHC and much more provide physically demonstrable tests of the predictions of Quantum Mechanics.

Ironically, GR and QM are among the most tested and verified theories of physics, despite the fact that gravity is not adequately explained by QM, particles are not currently explained by GR and in some ways they contradict each other. However; this doesn’t preclude a more comprehensive theory that connects QM to GR where both become a degenerate case of the more comprehensive theory.

While our perception is flat, we know space-time is curved because the Universe manifests the behavior predicted by GR. Fundamental particles are not directly perceptible either, but we know they exist because they manifest the behavior predicted by Quantum Mechanics.

Considering EMR as either a spherical wavefront or photons is well known and called wave-particle duality.

                kk,
Back radiation is a real thing. The problem is that the way Trenberth defines it is incorrect. He conflates energy transported by matter with energy transported by photons and calls both returns of energy to the surface back radiation. He neglects the fact that only photons contribute to the radiative balance of the planet and that the transport of energy from the surface by matter (latent heat, thermals, convection, etc) has a zero sum effect at the surface, relative to the RADIATIVE balance of the planet. All effects they may have are already embodied by the surface temperature and its consequential emissions.

He also conflates the effects of GHG’s with the effects of clouds in order to make the GHG effect seem much larger than it really is. The total amount of back radiation required to offset the 385 W/m^2 of surface emissions consequential to its average temperature arising from only 240 W/m^2 is 385-240 = 145 W/m^2. This is what Will is missing as he can’t accept that there must be 145 W/m^2 of photons recirculated to the surface from GHG’s and clouds in order to achieve the requisite surface temperature. This is not new energy, but is surface emissions being delayed by GHG’s and clouds before being returned to the surface.

If you are familiar with the Z domain (discrete time S domain), the back radiation is a Z^-1 term which is added to the Z^0 term coming from the Sun, where the discrete time interval is the average delay between the surface emissions and when that energy is returned to the surface.

There is actually hope for the angst of the climate scientist. If climate catastrophes are inevitable, how about learning to adapt to that future? A first step is to at least get a track record in short-term predictions, which might give an understanding of the where, when, what, likelihood and magnitude of future catastrophes. The at least you can minimize the false panic. Problem is, in so doing, they may find out that there may be no real cause for alarm. The biggest thing that they have to confront is that their beliefs about the world are wholly false. That for some is too much to cope with.

“Possibly we need a new classification for Scientist which excludes numeracy.”
Interesting point, and you are right. Also do the same for doctorates as a doctor of history is not the same as a doctor of medicine. We really do need different names for critical and non-critical thinking. A doctorate in philosophy should not carry the same name (or social status) as a doctorate in medicine.

The term “scientist” is a place-holder position anyway. And I positively hate it when the MSM use “expert”, I immediately reject anything an expert says and doubly so when the media report it.

A doctor of medicine always has ‘some practice’ as a requirement! Again try the Guild system (apprentice, journeyman, master) such may possibly work. All are promoted from below, never above! “He is called master because he makes the difficult seem easy, while always mentioning that the ‘impossible’ may take a bit longer”. After ‘master’ has had 15 years of ‘habilitation’, that MASTER may have something to ‘PROFESS–OR’ not! 🙂

To take a much more cynical view of Climate scientist, Sophie Lewis’s concerns about the impact of her baby on the global climate!

First, I really do pity her and her brand of psychology that sees demons and devils and disaster and destruction and deprivation and chaos around every tiny corner and residing in every doorway that leads into any sort of future for humanity and the planet.
All due apparently to mankind’s catastrophic impact on the climate, fears which she seems to have been able to quite unemotionally shut off whilst conceiving her baby.

To have such a constant and such a deep fear driven mentality extending over so much of ones lifetime as well as extending by proxy into the future of one’s children must be one of the most depressing mental characteristics that any human could face, especially as the climate catastrophe fear driven ones always completely fail to provide any hard data driven evidence to support the claim that their fears are justified.

The only evidence provided being a great deal of arm waving and much quoting of supposed natural occurring events that are outside of the proponent’s usually just a couple of decades long personal experiences of weather and climate .
Especially so if they are from the highly protected for most of their limited lives from the real weather and climate elements in the city and academic centric locations.
    ————-
    And for the completely cynical bit;

The Climate scientist Sophie Lewis’s of this world do have a very high degree of well practiced acting abilities to be able to turn the tears and fears and etc on and off according to the amounts of funding required and the tenor of the audience and / or media interviewing them so as to increase their personal status and public exposure such performances may invoke amongst the all powerful and sympathetic to leftist causes, media.

And when such climate scientist acting essentials acquired from the Hollywood script versions of climate science are not needed to reinforce their personal exposure and funding uplift, life and every about it just resumes as for the Climate scienctist Sophie Lewis’s of this world just as for any other street level citizen.
the climate fear being safely esconced ina brain cavity somewhere ready to be wheeled out again to take advantage of yet another climate scientist’s Oscar level performance of “climate fear” and “foreboding”.

Count me not just cynical but very cynical re Sophie Lewis and her “fears” but also straight out contemptuous of her so called “fearful performance”, fears of which none cannot be resolved by some extra media exposure and a 50% increase in grant funding plus a nice lucrative few months off on full pay for Maternity Leave.

Man is both a species and a gender term.

        Exhibit A
“And God said, Let us make man in our image… male and female created he them.”

What did he create? Man, used in this way it is referring to ALL of man kind. He then goes on to make clear that male and female are included in the term “man”.

It is the modern progressive world (and the women’s lib movement of the 70’s) that has corrupted our language and common understanding of words.

That is generic for Earth’s top predictor! for a short while Earthlings! The importance is in both “current top predator” and ‘in the image of GOD’.
“IMAGE” is defined as a projection of ‘whatever’ upon a lower dimensional manifold. Such precludes any possible understanding\knowledge at all, of ‘whatever’, AKA GOD! Get over it clown!

“IMAGE” is defined as a projection of ‘whatever’ upon a lower dimensional manifold”

This is a modern concept. When those words were penned; weather you believe that was Moses 3000 years ago, or by somebody in the last 500 years, Projectors didn’t exist.

Actually, there is “apparently” evidence that Leonardo De Vinci used some form of projector to create some of his paintings. I read that in an art book “Renaissance Art” I’m currently reading. No idea if it’s true, and the author wasn’t convinced it was true either.

So; “in our image”, could mean several things. I favour the two legs two arms no wings version, but it could mean “having a soul” as well as others.

                “Projectors didn’t exist.”

Projection need not be mechanical, only mathematical projective geometry. Try to actually project four-space onto your 2D monitor screen. Motion and the concept of ‘prospective’, a projective construction device, helps the imagination greatly! How much of that is knowledge or even learning anything except mathematical projective geometry itself? Conceptualize the magnitude of what is necessarily absent from that ‘Image of GOD’? In earthlings such must be absent!

“So; “in our image”, could mean several things. I favour the two legs two arms no wings version, but it could mean “having a soul” as well as others.”

There is nothing about her actual education, just “climate science” repeated over and over–no more than a chanted mantra, really, and as I have said over and over, based on the evidence I have turned up at every turn, there is no valid climate science, and no competent climate scientists. Her level of delusion suggests to me a good portion of sociology and/or psychology, totally negating any hard science education. That is confirmed by her letting her feelings dominate, characteristically negative and to an insane level, as is to be expected in a cult delusion (which is always driven to absolute control, in fending off reality).

***the Deep State at work again:

20 Mar: NationalGeographic: Laura Parker: ‘Biggest Case on the Planet’ Pits Kids vs. Climate Change
A pioneering lawsuit against the U.S. government on global warming won the right to a trial. Now Trump wants an appeals court to cancel it.
Levi Draheim is a nine-year-old science geek. He founded an environmental club as a fourth grader and gives talks about climate change to audiences of grown-ups…
Mary Wood, a University of Oregon environmental law professor who pioneered the concept that the atmosphere should be treated as part of the public trust, calls the lawsuit “the biggest case on the planet.”
“This claim challenges the government’s entire fossil-fuel philosophy. The whole thing,” Wood says…

In challenging the government’s role in climate change on constitutional grounds Julia Olson, the plaintiffs’ lead lawyer, harkens to the realm of historic Supreme Court cases that established new constitutional protections in situations when Congress failed to act…
Olson first tuned in to the climate change threat when, eight months pregnant with her youngest child, she watched An Inconvenient Truth, former Vice President Al Gore’s 2006 Oscar-winning climate change documentary at her local moviehouse.
“There is something about carrying life inside your body that is transformative and gives you a different kind of perspective on the world,” she says…

She founded Our Children’s Trust, a nonprofit with a mission to protect children from climate change, and now serves as executive director. The trust is assisting in the case…
After Judge Aiken ruled, proponents urged Obama to settle the case before Trump took office. Obama declined…

***Seven days before Trump was sworn in as president, government lawyers added a routine brief to the court file that may complicate the Trump administration’s effort to argue the science and halt the trial…
In the brief, government lawyers conceded nearly every point on which the plaintiffs’ case against the government was constructed. These admissions include the government’s role in promoting the development of fossil fuels and its belief that greenhouse gases are at “unprecedentedly high levels compared to the past 800,000 years … and pose risks to human health and welfare.”

The government went so far as to point out where the plaintiffs had understated the evidence against the government in court papers. They then corrected the figures, raising them upwards.
“They recognised the importance of this case and tried to make sure when the Obama administration left, that the government’s position was clear and the court shouldn’t spend time in trial worrying about facts that should not be contested,” says Phil Gregory, the plaintiffs’ co-counsel…

Even if a review is granted, it may be difficult for the Trump administration to reverse the government’s statements and acknowledgements about climate change that are already part of the record…

      Robert Rosicka @ # 46

It is possible for just one person to change earths climate but only if they press the button that starts a global nuclear war .

One person did change the global climate a very long time back.

He looked out across the waters that his ancestors and the legend keepers of the ages before had always said they were much wider and deeper than they were now.
It was a very clear day and way beyond those waters and the great ice pack that fringed those waters a young and very good eye could see the moving masses of immense herds of animals during the warm summer months.

The hunting would be very good indeed for his small band if they could find some way of getting across the waters to those vast herds in the far distance.

So they sat and the old men talked used their finger sign language and the young men around their own fire as is the wont of all young men said “lets go”!

The old man, the leader, the old wise one of all of perhaps 40 years old looked again across those waters and he knew if his small band did not soon make its decision to try and get to those far hunting grounds and a lay in stores of meat and skins for warmth and roots and a few grains for the coming harsh winter of those latitudes they had reached, they were doomed.

And he stood there in the clear morning as the fogs lifted and then, “We will go now!”

And the die was cast just once for a new future for the generations still to come of the race of Man

The few skin covered kayaks were loaded with the little food and few vital to survival possessions they had.
Many stayed behind to survive as best they could as the kayaks were small and few.
They stayed with the hope that the voyagers would be back before the next winter to take them to the new hunting grounds across the waters.

And the dozen or so kayaks in the bright light of the early fall set out along the edges of the Arctic ice pack across the Bering Straits to a new world, a world that mankind would alter forever.

A world so immense that as the great animals of the Clovis peoples fell before their spears, the whole of the North and then a few thousand years later the South American continent and all its wild life and plant life were to be changed and altered forever.

And with that the global climate also changed perhaps by a lot, perhaps only subtly and by very little, but it was changed.

We might never know by how much the global climate was changed as the vast North and South American continents were altered and changed by mankind and his destruction of the great beasts and animal life that had had those continents to themselves for the thousands of millenniums past.

That was until Man, a hairless weakling with no natural weapons or means of protecting himself except his developing intellect and his ability to very closely co-operate in any endeavour with his fellow man he set his collective mind to thereby becoming the top predator on the planet, finally reached those great continents.

Man had finally arrived to conquer the last of earth’s great land masses which in the millenniums ahead he would change and shape in ways that we do not and cannot yet fully understand.
But change them he did and still does to this day.

One man made a decision, a decision to load the kayaks and take the young men and the young women and the best hunters and to venture in those flimsy craft along the edges of the great arctic ice pack across the few tens of kilometres of the the Bering Straits to the new hunting grounds that they could see on a clear day far to the east.

      .
One man a long time ago made a decision that changed the world and the global climate in ways we are only just beginning to get a tiny glimpse of .

Nice story ROM, but in the depths of the ICE Age the land bridge across the Bering Strait was up to 300 kilometres wide.

21st Century Fox’s 73%-owned Nat Geo Mag (Rupert Murdoch, Executive Co-Chairman, Lachlan Murdoch Executive Co-Chairman,
James Murdoch CEO) is also DOUBLING DOWN on CAGW.

there a couple of thoughtful, extended comments (out of only 14 at time of posting) suggesting not all Nat Geo readers are happy about this activist, PARTISAN editorial by the self-proclaimed ***NONPARTISAN mag!

March 2017 Issue: National Geographic: From the Editor: On Climate Change (and Everything Else), We’re on the Side of Facts
National Geographic ‘will continue to report—factually and fairly — on how climate change is altering the Earth
By Susan Goldberg, Editor in Chief
In the past three years, this magazine has run 34 stories on climate change — including a special issue devoted entirely to the topic.
Our commitment is ongoing. In the April issue, to mark Earth Day, we’ll publish a guide that separates fact from fallacy on climate change and a feature story on how rising temperatures are affecting Alaska. Later this year we’ll offer looks at the Arctic, Antarctica, the Galápagos Islands, and other places at risk as the world warms. Our television channel is airing a documentary film and a three-part series on water issues.
And that doesn’t count the hundreds of climate stories we have published on nationalgeographic.com…

Covering our climate — where we keep setting records for the hottest year — is one of the most important things we can do. It’s especially crucial in an era when some people claim that there are no “facts” and basic science is loudly questioned without embarrassment.
At National Geographic we are proudly ***NONPARTISAN. But there are a few matters on which we do take sides:
    • We are on the side of facts.
    • We are on the side of science.
    • We are on the side of the planet.

???Those who deny climate change receive a lot of attention, but the vast majority of Americans acknowledge the reality of the problem. Nearly two-thirds of respondents told Gallup last year that they are worried about global warming—the highest figure since 2008…

To help keep you current on developments, we’re expanding our environmental coverage across publishing platforms. We’ll have deeply reported magazine stories, brought to life with exceptional photography, graphics, and maps. On nationalgeographic.com, you’ll find topical stories every day, as well as a climate change reference guide. And on our social media accounts, our contributors are providing compelling views of climate change from all points of the globe…
Perhaps philosopher Eric Hoffer put it best: “In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists.”

I was once an avid reader of National Geographic.
My scarce resources (pocket money) went into an annual subscription.
      I have all issues 1966 – 1992.
I loved the photography and articles which took me to places I could only dream about.
They told me about important issues.

Progressively I came to the realisation that although the photography was still excellent the articles were being driven by a new agenda. The quality of journalism was deteriorating and I was being taken to places I no longer wished to know about.

A number of articles about places in Australia that I knew well were full of inaccuracies and philosophies which were in contrast to my own experience. It seemed that every other article was pushing the mantra of Climate Change.
Sadly the Green Blob had irrevocably changed what I once considered to be a very close friend.

I did not renew my subscription for 1993.
I still look at the fantastic photography while in waiting rooms etc.
Occasionally I wistfully revisit the old issues and the time before this current madness.

With the very likely downturn in temperatures in the next few years I would suggest the special issue would prove a good investment for the future (if it weren’t for the thousands of sceptics also hoarding copies).

a Nat Geo reader linked to the following (not exactly pro-Trump btw) piece in the Editorial comments:

4 Feb: WSJ: Change Would Be Healthy at U.S. Climate Agencies
In the Obama era, it was routine for press releases to avoid mentioning any margin of error.
    By Holman W. Jenkins, Jr
It will be hard to notice when President Trump does something worthy of hysteria if everything he does is greeted with hysteria. Take claims that he’s laying siege to the alleged chastity of climate scientists. This is one subject where it might be wise not to rely on the reflexive media narrative.

The year 2016 was the warmest ever recorded — so claimed two U.S. agencies, NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies and the Commerce Department’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Except it wasn’t, according to the agencies’ own measures of statistical uncertainty.

Such fudge is of fairly recent vintage. Leaving any discussion of the uncertainty interval out of press releases only became the norm in the second year of the Obama administration. Back when he was presenting the 2008 numbers, NASA’s James Hansen, no slouch in raising climate alarms, nevertheless made a point of being quoted saying such annual rankings can be “misleading because the difference in temperature between one year and another is often less than the uncertainty in the global average.”

Statisticians wouldn’t go through the trouble of assigning an uncertainty value unless it meant something. Two measurements separated by less than the margin of error are the same. And yet NASA’s Goddard Institute, now under Mr. Hansen’s successor Gavin Schmidt, put out a release declaring 2014 the “warmest year in the modern record” when it was statistically indistinguishable from 2005 and 2010.

Nowadays Goddard seems to mention confidence interval only when it’s convenient. So 2015, an El Niño year, was the warmest yet “with 94 percent certainty.” No confidence interval was cited one year later in proclaiming 2016 the new warmest year “since modern recordkeeping began.” In fact, the difference versus 2015 was a mere one-quarter of the margin of error…

President Trump is a complete novice, but presumably at some point he will climb the learning curve, gain control over his administration, and start making cagier decisions about which fights are worth having.

(OUR?) OUR guess is that fighting with his administration’s climate scientists won’t seem like much of a priority. And yet, given all the money U.S. taxpayers spend on climate science, a mental freshening wouldn’t be the worst thing.

Goddard’s Mr. Schmidt, keeper of a snarling blog that makes frequent use of the slur “denier,” got his start at the New York City-based NASA science lab more than 20 years ago.

On the slight chance Mr. Trump does make such a move, keep something else in mind: Undifferentiated hysteria will apparently be the media reaction to every Trump action equally whether those actions are entirely justified or entirely indefensible.

In some ways I think articles like this are good, because most sane people will see this as yet another academic who has lost the plot completely, and will question the competence of the people, and the universities mentioned. By itself, it’s not so much, but it all adds up, slowly, but surely.

Sure, some people will read it and wallow in ostentatious self-pity as the drivel confirms their destructive, and negative world view, but, like all fanatics, this cadre of people cannot be reasoned with, so there is little point trying.

had to get these excerpts from the cached version:

17 Mar: E&E News: Jean Chemnick: Climate diplomacy fund dies in budget blueprint
Climate change advocates say they are not optimistic about being able to save the $1.3 billion in international global warming assistance that President Trump would ax from the budget.
The fiscal 2018 blueprint that the Office of Management and Budget released yesterday would kill the Global Climate Change Initiative. The GCCI has been home for seven years to the most important U.S. climate diplomacy programs, from the Green Climate Fund to participation in the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) for advanced energy technologies, the scientific Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Some programs, observers and former administration officials said, might be salvaged during the appropriations process or crowbarred into the already-tight budgets of regional offices at the State Department. But with the agency facing a 28 percent overall cut from enacted levels and Republicans antagonistic to climate change controlling the purse strings, the odds appear long.
“I think anything that has the two c’s in it is done,” predicted one source…

It is not definitive about eliminating dues to the U.N. science and negotiating bodies, stating only that the budget “fulfills the President’s pledge to cease payments to the United Nations’ (UN) climate change programs by eliminating U.S. funding related to the Green Climate Fund and its two precursor Climate Investment Funds.”
It confirms what has long been expected: that the United States under Trump will not provide the remaining $2 billion it has promised by 2020 toward the GCF, which supports adaptation and clean energy projects in the developing world…

Nick Loris of the Heritage Foundation, meanwhile, said stopping payments to the UNFCCC would send “a strong signal” about its legitimacy…
Andrew Light, of the World Resources Institute and a former State Department climate team member, said the agency should continue to address climate-related instability head on. He noted that researchers have established a link between climate change and the Syrian drought that precipitated a six-year civil war in that country and a refugee crisis.
“Climate change was a necessary condition for the instability that created this crisis, and we are now saying some combination of ‘we don’t think that’s true’ with no proof and ‘even if it’s true, we don’t care,'” he said…

The death of GCCI would also throw into serious doubt future U.S. contributions to a host of aid and lending programs, including the United Nations’ Adaptation Fund, assistance to small island states to help with loss and damage related to climate change, and U.S. contributions to programs administered by multilateral lending institutions.
Thoriq Ibrahim, environment and energy minister for the Maldives and chairman of the Alliance of Small Island States negotiating bloc, said the Paris Agreement couldn’t be implemented without rich countries’ support.
“Budget gaps in these areas, if not filled by other means, would damage the work communities are doing on the ground to cut emissions and adapt to climate impacts that can no longer be avoided,” he said.

But Loris said the demise of GCCI would mean the United States could no longer dictate to other countries how they should develop.
“The best way developing countries will adapt to a changing climate and become more resilient is through higher levels of wealth and prosperity,” he said. “These programs do little to address that.”

more from the Maldives, which featured in the E&E article. Megan still pining for Nasheed, smearing Yameen:

20 Mar: ClimateChangeNews: Megan Darby: Maldives regime imperils coral reefs in dash for cash
Under President Yameen, ministers are quashing environmental concerns to strike opaque resort deals with foreign investors, warn divers, scientists and two EPA insiders.
Ibrahim Mohamed, an EPA deputy director on secondment to James Cook University in Australia, said ministers now routinely overruled experts.

“If [a project] gets rejected [on environmental grounds] and the minister thinks it might be politically advantageous, they will go ahead with the project,” he told Climate Home by Skype. “People have a fear of rejecting the government’s decisions… The [environmental assessment] process is quite stringent, but in the end, it is prone to quite a lot of intimidation.”…
A senior source still working at the EPA, who did not wish to be named, backed-up Mohamed’s assessment and did not comment further…

The need for development outweighs the risks, said Ibrahim Shihab, a spokesperson for the president’s office…
The Maldives scores just 36 out of 100 on Transparency International’s corruption perception index, below the global average. National campaigners say the situation has deteriorated under Yameen, who took power in 2013 under contentious circumstances.

An explosive Al Jazeera documentary in September linked president Yameen to the disappearance of US$80 million from state coffers – the biggest corruption scandal in the country’s history. He denies any wrongdoing…

In the most audacious plan yet, Yameen is in talks with the Saudi royal family about a $10bn development on sparsely populated Faafu atoll…
A planned visit by King Salman this month was cancelled at the last minute, ostensibly in response to a flu outbreak, following protests against the mooted deal…

Former president Mohamed Nasheed is in exile, hoping to return home next year to contest a presidential election. That depends on the judiciary lifting his 13-year prison sentence for terrorism charges, which a UN working group found to be “arbitrary” and “politically motivated”.
***He told Climate Home in London transparency was essential to the country’s resilience in the face of climate change…

Megan didn’t have any concerns about the Maldives a few days ago:

17 Mar: ClimateChangeNews: Megan Darby: Climate veterans say Trump budget undermines global cooperation
The degree of political consensus achieved in Paris was “an historic accomplishment”, said Thoriq Ibrahim, environment and energy minister for the Maldives and head of the small-islands coalition at climate negotiations. “But turning the agreement into action still requires institutions like the IPCC, UNFCCC, and Green Climate Fund. Budget gaps in these areas, if not filled by other means, would damage the work communities are doing on the ground to cut emissions and adapt to climate impacts that can no longer be avoided.”…

followup Maldives’ comment in in moderation.

19 Mar: NPR: Climate Change As An Issue Of National Security
LOURDES GARCIA-NAVARRO, HOST: Last week, ProPublica (ANDREW REVKIN ARTICLE) published excerpts of a testimony by Defense Secretary James Mattis calling climate change a national security threat…
With us to discuss this growing topic is ***BRIGADIER GENERAL GERALD GALLOWAY from the CENTER FOR CLIMATE AND SECURITY. He’s also a professor of engineering at the University of Maryland…

GALLOWAY: …We already know, for example, that we have more intense rainfall events. We expect to see – the rivers will flow with greater volume, and that will cause problems for river crossings. We see there are problems in the seas. The storms are more intense. We’ll have more frequent storms – all of the sorts of things that make uncertainty reality on the battlefield…

GALLOWAY: If our allies are having problems in their own country as a result of such things as drought – where there’s instability in the country – instability breeds conflict. And conflict is what puts our forces at risk, and we don’t want that to happen. So we’ve got to be prepared for this, and we’ve got to be prepared to assist at home and abroad…

GARCIA-NAVARRO: So let’s talk about the measures released last week by the Trump administration in the budget – cuts to almost every single climate change initiative in multiple departments and agencies. I’m going to list a few. The EPA’s climate programs would be ended, possibly in their entirety. The Department of Energy’s programs would be scaled back. NASA’s Earth monitoring programs also potentially gone. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAH, would also be hit. Are you concerned?

GALLOWAY: I certainly am concerned. You can’t have one part of the government operating one way and another part operating in a different manner. So in this particular case, we have to rely on many things that NASA provides, that NOAH provides, and it’s important that they be continued…BLAH BLAH

    reminder. worth reading all:

2014: Washington Times: Rowan Scarborough: Retired officers poised to profit after Pentagon’s alarmist climate change report
Retired military officers deeply involved in the climate change movement — and some in companies positioned to profit from it — spearheaded an alarmist global warming report this month that calls on the Defense Department to ramp up spending on what it calls a man-made problem.

The report, which the Obama administration immediately hailed as a call to action, was issued not by a private advocacy group but by a Pentagon-financed think tank that trumpets “absolute objectivity.” The research was funded by a climate change group that is also one of the think tank’s main customers.

The May 13 report came from the military advisory board within CNA Corp., a nonprofit based in Alexandria, Virginia, that includes the Center for Naval Analyses, a Navy-financed group that also gets contracts from other Pentagon units. CNA also operates the Institute for Public Research.
CNA’s webpage states that it is not an advocacy group…

The other vice chairman, retired Army ***BRIG. GEN. GERALD E. GALLOWAY JR., is a prominent adviser to the CENTER FOR CLIMATE AND SECURITY, a climate change group.

In all, four CNA board members sit on the panel of advisers to the CENTER FOR CLIMATE AND SECURITY, whose statements on climate change are similar to those found in the CNA report.
Other board members work in the climate change world of consulting and technology…

The CENTER FOR CLIMATE AND SECURITY has taken donations from the Tides Foundation, which gets money from Democratic Party financier and liberal billionaire George Soros…

The CNA credits the CENTER FOR CLIMATE AND SECURITY for helping release the report, and the center issued a press release lauding the report the day it was released…

The CNA report prominently displays the opinions of three retired officers who sit on the advisory board at the CENTER FOR CLIMATE AND SECURITY: GEN. GALLOWAY; Adm. Frank L. “Skip” Bowman, the Navy’s former director of nuclear propulsion and who now runs a consulting business; and retired Rear Adm. David W. Titley, a former Oceanographer of the Navy.

Urgent Obama call can funnel funds to projects…
Climate change has become big business. The U.S. government alone increased spending by more than $100 billion from 2003 to 2010, according to the Government Accountability Office.
Nations around the world are buying sensors, imaging technologies and airborne monitors…
That means huge contracts for consulting, studies and technologies to analyze the Earth and its environment…

Gen. Keys, who joined the CENTER FOR CLIMATE AND SECURITY in March, owns RK Solutions, a consulting firm that advises the Pentagon on climate change, according to the center’s biography for him…

One of its (CNA’s) major foundation customers is the Energy Foundation, the same group that financed the CNA military advisory board climate study. It is a global warming activist and is pushing a tax on carbon emissions…
CNA also lists as clients the liberal Rockefeller Foundation and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund…

    climate sanity is spreading!

20 Mar: Irish Times View: Setting a course for inaction of climate change
While the Government insists the mitigation plan is not a “wait and see” exercise, evidence points to the contrary
By mid-century, Ireland will need to have weaned itself off fossil fuels used to generate electricity: to heat our homes; and to drive our cars, buses, lorries and trains. There is a 98 per cent dependence on oil in transport, for example. In that context, Minister for Communications, Climate Change and the Environment Denis Naughten last week published the Draft National Mitigation Plan…

The 91-page document is comprehensive in setting out the current situation. For example, it accepts Ireland will come nowhere near the 2020 EU targets of 20 per cent emissions reductions and will struggle to meet the 2030 targets. However, the document is staggeringly non-committal in terms of any concrete plans or proposals to achieve the goals. There is a bewildering plethora of reviews, reports, consultations, scoping exercises, Mickey-Mouse pilot programmes, and cost benefit analyses. The common thread is inaction for the foreseeable future…

The expense of meeting the targets will involve painful adjustments in living standards and will stretch public acceptability to breaking point. To be fair, it would be churlish for any government to plump for some energy-saving solution that cost billions of euro and turned out to be a dud…

While the Government insists the plan is not a “wait and see” exercise, the evidence points to the contrary…READ ON

It is so tragic that Australia has “blown it” by ruining what remains of our resource rich and once manufacturing rich and wealthy country by spending billions to solve a “problem” that doesn’t actually exist.

Why can’t anyone ask the obvious question – where is the evidence for CAGW which necessitates the destruction of a cheap, reliable power grid to be replaced by an expensive unreliable one which is GUARANTEED to DESTROY the remains of economy and relegate us to second world status.

They might as well shorten the extend misery and euthanise Australia and immediately shut down all coal and gas power stations. The agony of the drawn out death is too much to bear.

    Losing perspective is amazing.

Does a person that hops on a plane during the day ever consider that they are closer to the sun? Of course not. It is absurd. Yet, the fact is that this is far more true than the importance of one child’s impact on global climate change.

Trusting the work of a person that has lost perspective is not wise. She should be reassigned to a position where her work can be trusted.

Australia makes its living from the export of minerals, largely coal and iron ore and increasingly natural gas. Most Australians largely are not employed in these areas but are supported from these incomes. A very large number of Australians are employed directly by government as so called public servants. Amazingly and perhaps uniquely, the largest scientific group in the country, the CSIRO, is public service. By far the largest media group, the ABC/SBS monoliths are public service, but independent in that they are not directly controlled by government but by a charter which insists on strict lack of political bias, but which are extreme left organization in violation of this charter. Not bound by the media laws and illegally operated under those laws, the ABC have invaded every form of media except print, where they work closely with the extreme left Fairfax group.

So the hospitals, universities and schools are predominantly public service. Whole states are subsidized including the Northern Territory, South Australia and Tasmania and Canberra, where half to all of the residents are public servants. These people almost all vote Green and they are anti mining, anti business, anti farming and want nationalization of electricity, telephones and all transport services. They are supported in this by unions for whom independent businesses are the sworn enemy.

So we have a conflict which is bringing down this country as the up to 25% Green vote is to stop mining, stop farming, stop forestry, stop manufacturing, stop fishing, stop coal, stop gas and stop fracking and even gas exploration let alone exploitation.

Now we are at an impasse, where both Labor and Coalition toadying to Green preferences has brought about the world’s biggest Carbon tax, the RET. The rivers of retail cash are flowing overseas currently at $3Billion a year from every electricity bill and forcing the permanent closure of all coal and gas power stations and perversely replacing them with really polluting diesel and thousands of generally stationary windmills and now giant batteries.

What is perverse, is that the income of the country which enables Green voters to buy their imported cars, their imported phones, their imported windmills, bicycles and fish is paid not by their work or any part of their work, but by the hardworking people in the coal, gas, farming and mining industries.

Never has an advanced society been so intent on destroying itself from within to indulge the climate fantasies of a fringe group of largely public servants who have no idea who pays the bills. HG Wells saw this in the Time machine with the Morlocks and the ignorant Eloi, who prance about paradise with no idea of the realities of life or even who provides the food. The chief of the Eloi is Malcolm Turnbull who has lived a charmed existence with immense inherited wealth and keeps his cash overseas.

The coalition needs to bring back a climate realist who can end these fantasies and the RET and get our power stations working again.

As for Ms Lewis, her career and income are based on Climate Change (which is clearly identical to Global Warming), so she is hardly an independent scientist. If the ‘pause’ since 1998 did exist, as she loudly denies, could she afford to admit it? Even such alarmists are reduced to the ‘warmest ever’ approach, the hottest few years story, because the temperature is not changing, rather than admitting that next year marks the 20th year of the pause, Sophie’s entire professional career. She might consider a career change before she has to explain the cooling predicted by those models which do accurately show the past 2,500 years and predicted the pause. See Prof Weiss at 12:23.

The so called penny will drop eventually once our electricity supply becomes so unreliable and costly our whole economy will slide into the abyss. Hopefully we can recover from it before it’s too late. The reality is hundreds of coal fired power stations are being built all over the world as we speak yet we are closing down ours with no plan to build new ones while we are the biggest exporter of coal. Go figure. This renewables madness has to stop eventually or our economy goes over the cliff.

Leif has stunned the skeptic world with his recent comment at WUWT (a thread by David Archibald on the present solar cycle) he is certain the sun’s behaviour has nothing to do with climate change.

‘Actually, it is not the Sun, but the planet Jupiter…. Jupiter changes the orbit of the Earth causing glaciations.’

    Hmmm ….. interesting idea.

    10

    • #

but that is an old one. There are heaps of Jupiter cranks out there

      30

      • #

        Gee Aye,

Do you understand why the Earth’s precise orbit and precession can only be calculated when you account for the motions of the other planets, especially Jupiter. Orbital mechanics is the math behind Milankovitch. Do you deny that orbital variability is absolutely correlated to the ebb and flow of ice ages?

The most controversial impact of Jupiter is how the combined gravitational influence of Jupiter and Saturn affects the fusion core of the Sun influencing solar activity and sunspots. Certainly, correlation and causation are not the same, but sunspot cycles are correlated with the period of Jupiter’s orbit in a far stronger manner than CO2 concentrations are related to temperature.

Most of the stars we observe in the Universe are variable output with seemingly random periods and intensity variability. The laws of physics governing fusion are far more deterministic than this and about the only thing that could cause such variability is the gravitational influence of other bodies. It just happens that the gravitational influence of other bodies on the Sun is relatively weak, but certainly not zero.

        40

        • #

so? Doesn’t mean there are not cranks aplenty. What about our resident sun crank?

Cranks often take a kernel of truth and extrapolate it to absurdity, but that doesn’t negate the initial truth. For example, the fact that CO2 is a GHG is the kernel of truth that the IPCC and its self serving ‘consensus’ extrapolates to an absurd conclusion, however; this doesn’t negate the fact that CO2 is a GHG.

And what can you mean by GHG except that you buy into the complete nonsense of the CAGW scammers, consisting of a diversion of atmosphere storing sensible heat and somehow returning such heat back to the surface? Not even airborne H2O can possibly do that. H2O does store insolation power as latent heat of evaporation for 6-22 hours continually. Every bit of this latent heat is converted to sensible heat and emitted as EMR to space! None at all is ever emitted in the direction of the higher ‘radiance’ surface! 🙂

                Will,

“None at all is ever emitted in the direction of the higher ‘radiance’ surface!”

This is absolutely incorrect and about half of the photon energy absorbed by the atmosphere is returned to the surface as different photons at a later time. Otherwise, the average surface temperature would be about 255K instead of 288K.

Your assertion that a higher radiance surface somehow blocks the absorption of lower energy photons is absurd, especially since Planck radiance is a distribution of photons at all possible energies and temperature is just a function of the photon energy (frequency) of maximum intensity.

The issue is not whether or not the GHG effect exists, which all legitimate scientists on both sides agree does, but how big the effect is. The IPCC presumes an effect about 3-4 times larger than the physics of photons can explain. Until you can wrap your head around this, it will be difficult for you to understand the nature of the controversy and how the science must be corrected.

(Will, “None at all is ever emitted in the direction of the higher ‘radiance’ surface!”)

“This is absolutely incorrect and about half of the photon energy absorbed by the atmosphere is returned to the surface as different photons at a later time. Otherwise, the average surface temperature would be about 255K instead of 288K.”

The surface temperature is higher than ‘brightness temperature’ only because of static gravitational compression of Earths atmosphere. No thermal EMR exitance need ever originate at Earth’s surface!

“Your assertion that a higher radiance surface somehow blocks the absorption of lower energy photons is absurd, especially since Planck radiance is a distribution of photons at all possible energies and temperature is just a function of the photon energy (frequency) of maximum intensity.”

What intentional diversion! Per Planck, specific intensity, never referencing flux. You treat temperature as some weird function of something other, never; temperature is but a physical measurement of something other, (sensible heat of matter), never a cause of something other!!! Furthermore I never claimed any block of the absorption of lower energy photons. Mass can either emit or absorb at any frequency in one quantum epoch, but never both. To do both would insist on a composite quantum probability of greater than 100%. The very principals of all quantum mechanics simply destroy your claim of opposing EM flux at any frequency.

“The issue is not whether or not the GHG effect exists, which all legitimate scientists on both sides agree does, but how big the effect is.”

That is but your imbecilic claim. You simply cannot demonstrate any sensible heat transfer from atmosphere to lower temperature surface, especially via EMR. Such concept can only be a deliberate scam violation of the Rudy Clausius 2nd law of thermodynamics (1854); ‘Stuff don spontaneously go uphill, ever’!

“The IPCC presumes an effect about 3-4 times larger than the physics of photons can explain. Until you can wrap your head around this, it will be difficult for you to understand the nature of the controversy and how the science must be corrected.”

The science can only be corrected by trashing all post modern BS since Satyendra Bose fake physics 1924. 🙁

I understand your misconception now. The surface temperature is the ‘color temperature’ of the radiation emitted by the planet, which is the temperature based on Wein’s displacement. This is higher than the brightness temperature because portions of the emitted spectrum have been removed by GHG’s and clouds and the total emitted power is less. While the color temperature of the planet is based on where the peak of the nearly ideal Planck spectrum emitted by the surface, the brightness temperature is related to the total emitted power at some distance, independent of the spectrum.

Gravity sets the kinetic temperature profile of the atmosphere per a lapse rate, but the kinetic temperature of the atmosphere, that is, the temperature based on the kinetic theory of gases, is independent of the brightness temperature in the LWIR. The brightness temperature is a remotely sensed measurement of the kinetic temperature of matter at a distance (in this case, the surface) while the kinetic temperature is that of the matter at its surface (distance = 0).

(Will, “The surface temperature is higher than ‘brightness temperature’ only because of static gravitational compression of Earths atmosphere.”)

“I understand your misconception now. The surface temperature is the ‘color temperature’ of the radiation emitted by the planet, which is the temperature based on Wein’s displacement. What total nonsense! While color or color temperature may possibly be the visible expression of sensible heat. the ‘visible’ flux to the lower temperature Mk1 mod4 eyeball, as viewed through a proper welding mask is only that of narrow band centered at 600 nm. This has nothing to do with color temperature or brightness temperature! Please go somewhere, anywhere, and purchase even one clue!

“Gravity sets the kinetic temperature profile of the atmosphere per a lapse rate,”

Only as a theoretical semi-static reference. Earth’s atmosphere is nowhere static! All must be unknown, or Climate Clown nonsense!

“but the kinetic temperature of the atmosphere, that is, the temperature based on the kinetic theory of gases,”

Can you possibly state ‘the kinetic theory of gases’, and what that may possibly mean, especially in some EMR sense?

“is independent of the brightness temperature in the LWIR.”

There is no such thing as brightness temperature in Earth’s radiance profile. Such cannot exist!

“The brightness temperature is a remotely sensed measurement of the kinetic temperature of matter at a distance (in this case, the surface) while the kinetic temperature is that of the matter at its surface (distance = 0).”

Much more desperate nonsense! Brightness temperature is but a useful construct of only narrow band EMR, like a CO2 laser 10.6 micron wavelength indicating the exact temperature of some absorber where EMR flux transfer must cease. Such laser can easily melt steel, or you! No part of such laser has thermometric temperature above 370 K. dis is quantum electrodynamics folk, not da punk thermodynamics! Next is quantum chromodynamics (QCD) which must turn any earthling mind into gibberish. 🙂

Conversely, the crank attribute is often misapplied due to a failure to grasp the truth being presented and extrapolating the misunderstanding to absurdity.

you fail to grasp the truth being presented

is the position that a crank must believe in, otherwise they could not continue to be cranks.

My point is just that crank is a highly subjective attribute used to denigrate a person rather than what they believe. When you disagree with what someone believes, even if you think what they believe is preposterous, the proper response is to explain why or offer a better alternative and not to call the other person a derogatory name. This is the classic tactic of those who unconditionally believe the claims of the IPCC and who revert to this technique only because they have no proper response.

some people prefer to proclaim anything they disagree with as Fake.

A true crank can be identified objectively, so long as you have a clear definition, can identify what they are claiming and take the time to test their conviction (or inability to see its faults). For instance – have you ever delved into the world of those who claim to have slain a certain dragon. Is old Dougie still around?

Smelly cotton socks Dougie is everywhere’ just like his dragon. Much to the annoyance of all others! Running away from, before getting consumed, is the same as slaying, to some! 🙂

Thank you Jo. Oh dear oh dear oh dear, if she is any indication of the products of the institutions of Higher Learning, these days, we do really need to drain the swamps, very soon.

Geez, hand the kid over to a loving couple for adoption at birth, and give the angst-ridden green loser the option to save the human race in a personal and intimate way.

“Part of my motivation for becoming a climate scientist was my grave worries for our future and my desire to make a positive contribution.”

Good of Sophie to admit that she entered the field with a preconceived notion, and not at all surprising that her research has given outputs (modelled, of course) which supports her previously formed belief.

It’s hard for a scientist to follow the evidence of data when they are making the data up.

    Roy Hogue

Reminds me of a guy from a long time back who went by the name Marion Morrison (John Wayne) who was so worried that the world would be ruined for his children that he could think of nothing else. He began changing his name to whatever he was likened to by someone in a comment. Finally when I called him the Energiser Bunny because of his persistence he began posting as Energiser Bunny.

Those were the days when trolls were interesting and fun to deal with. But now… Well, we’ve heard this story a few times too many.

She needs to get a grip, before she hears the pitter-patter of the footsteps belonging to the men in white coats that are coming to take her away to the funny farm.

Sophie methinks needs a large dose of lithium followed by electroshock therapy. I must say just when I think I can no longer be surprised by idiocy, along comes something like this.

Why does the alarmist side attract the idiots? Apparently, she either does not really believe in AGW (else why have a child that contributes), or she is looking for a pity pat party!
