Watch the Heartland Conference Live

Even if we can’t be there we can still watch it live. In years to come people will marvel that the true spirit of science was kept alive by a small independent think tank. Thank goodness for Heartland.

The live stream (and links to talks from Monday and Tuesday).

Please tell us in comments which parts you appreciate the most. Jim Lakey tells me that “Australian MP George Christensen gave a great presentation (starting at the 28:30 mark), though it was panned by the ABC.” Typical.  – Jo

Day-Three Live Stream of International Climate Conference Features Lifetime Achievement Award to S. Fred Singer

Skeptic Conference Ends with Discussions of Latest Science Challenging UN Reports, Recognition of Professional Courage and Honesty

LAS VEGAS (July 9, 2014)— Today, the last day of the Ninth International Conference on Climate Change(ICCC9), will include the presentation of the “Lifetime Achievement in Climate Science Award” to Dr. S. Fred Singer, as well as 29 more presentations from leading “skeptic” scientists and policy experts of a human-caused climate crisis.

The live stream with full coverage of ICCC9 will begin at 8 a.m. PDT today (Wednesday, July 9.) The last of 70 total presentations at the conference will conclude 4 p.m. PDT.

Singer was among the first and is still the most prominent scientist in the world speaking out against global warming alarmism. He is the author, coauthor, and editor of many books, including Climate Change Reconsidered(several volumes), a comprehensive critique of the assessment reports of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental International Panel on Climate Change.

Click here for much more information about Singer’s long and distinguished scientific career. See bios of all presenters at ICCC9 at the speakers page for the conference website, and click here for a full list of award recipients at the three-day conference from Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

“Fred Singer is the most amazing and wonderful person participating in the global warming debate today,” said Joseph Bast, president of The Heartland Institute, sponsor of the award. “Fred was one of the original ‘rocket scientists’ who helped put satellites and eventually men into space in the 1960s. He is a brilliant scientist and a pioneer in many fields, and one of the most recognized scientists of his generation.

“Fred could have accepted the awards and honorary degrees and settled into a peaceful retirement. Instead, he began writing books and articles exposing errors and corruption in climate science,” Bast continued. “As a result, this kind and patient man, a true American science hero, is slandered and vilified by environmental activists and journalists who couldn’t make it through a high school chemistry class.

“We are very proud to recognize Fred Singer’s lifetime achievements in climate science with this award,” said Bast.

Global Warming Debate
The debate over the causes and consequences of global warming (or “climate change”) is one of the great controversies of the modern era. While environmental activists and some politicians claim “the debate is over” and call for immediate action to reduce man-made greenhouse gas emissions, others say the science points to only a very small human impact – too small to warrant concern – and the costs of trying to prevent global warming far exceed the benefits.

Ninth International Conference on Climate Change
The Ninth International Conference on Climate Change is expected to attract nearly 1,000 speakers, scientists, and guests willing to question whether man-made global warming is a problem worth addressing. The event has 32 cosponsors and features 60 prominent scientists and economists as keynoters or panelists.

The Heartland Institute is a 30-year-old national nonprofit organization headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Its mission is to discover, develop, and promote free-market solutions to social and economic problems. For more information, visit our Web site or call 312/377-4000.

i’ve been watching it, and just love it.
also hoping progress is being made with David’s solar theory.

    TonyfromOz –

please help. heard a man on radio yesterday saying he has offgrid solar in queensland through Infinity. he got 20 panels plus 6.0kw inverter (from memory), plus 2-pack battery system for total cost of $14,000 after initial rebate.

with this system (which sounds incredibly cheap) he has been able to stay offgrid completely, but has only had his first quarterly bill so far, for $0. his average quarterly electricity bill was $1,100. i am unable to remember other details of what he said.

Infinity told him the batteries would last 10 years, which means he would pay off his investment in a few years.

given i’ve only heard of batteries that cost tens of thousands of dollars, i found it amazing such a deal existed.

would very much appreciate your comments.

p.s. he has the ability to connect to the grid in case of any problem cropping up with the solar.

      Pat,
I find it hard to believe that his quartly bill was $1000 and then down to zero with 20 panels.
I have 16 panels and our bill before that was less that $400. We are in front each quarter now less than $50.
I would think he has reduced his use of electrical items, with maybe gas for cooking and solar hot water as well.

Good to see he also relies on coal!

      Ooops!

Disregard Comment no. 3 – having trouble with calculator (display indistinct) and out by a factor of 5. That bring the cost down to 15-16cents per KwH at best, if he can use the entire output. All he has to do is make sure that the panels and the inverter last for the whole 10 years. Personally I have my doubts.

Annual generation becomes 9125KwH, which is rather high. Typical usage in Oz is between 4500 and 6500 per year. He will get no rebate for any excess generation because he isn’t connected to the grid. In those cases the cost per KwH varies from 21.5 to 31 cents per KwH. Without his actual annual usage I can’t say what his payback time is, and you should also include the interest that would have been generated from that sum (or the interest charged on it if borrowed).

The abc coverage of that speech seems pretty fair. It pretty much just says what he said, with a totally non extremist headline to boot.

“Infinity told him the batteries would last 10 years” would seem to be the interesting point. Did they put it in writing?

20 panels with a 6 Kw inverter? Assuming panels are 0.250 Kw the he gets 5 Kw capacity. IF these generated at their capacity for 5 hours a day, that’s 1825 KwH per year, or 76.7 cents per KwH over 10 years; after which he has to pay out for new batteries and an inverter, and I don’t think he will get another “initial rebate”.

I am hoping that it will be quite a while before electricity reaches that figure, not just “a few years”.

Thanks Jo, I’ll have something decent to watch while the snow comes down here…we’ll make sure the kids see it cause they’ll never get another chance due to future “Angry Winters” 😉

thanx to those who have already responded about the Inifinity solar deal.

the guy sounded genuine, and listed the many appliances he had, including 4 55-inch tvs. he did say his hot water was on separate solar, but he repeated that he had $1,100 average quarterly electricity bill previously.

being sceptical by nature, i have considered he could be from Infinity, tho i looked at some forums today, where people seemed happy with their Infinity deals. unfortunately, i cannot compare what they discuss with what the man said, as i don’t have the technical understanding. here’s one forum, tho not too recent. whether they are discussing similar systems, i do not know. finally, the man on the radio mentioned CPV from memory, if that means something to u all:

      Pat:

Infinity get good comments on the net. They offer a number of 5Kw systems with a 5Kw inverter.
From what I can see he got that for around $11-12000 which doesn’t leave much for the batteries. Similar size systems in other States for off-grid cost around $35-40,000.

From his usage I think he will have to top up from the grid quite frequently. Of course he may have switched from electric hot water to a solar system at the same time, which would have reduced his usage. Still, I agree with you, he seems to have got out of that very cheaply.

Well the conference looks pretty good. I wonder how the ‘luke warmists’ who mistakenly believe in some GHG theory, totally impossible, and breaks all laws of physics, will argue with the real physicists who dont believe in any GHG theory. But good debates to be heard.

It seems to me that the most luke Warmists are more interested in the politics than the science.

8 July: Breitbart: M.E. Synon: Revealed: EU Hands Out Multi-Millions to the BBC and Green Lobby
Figures are just out disclosing the millions of taxpayers’ money the European Union paid in 2013 to unelected, unaccountable non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other special interest groups, especially to the “global warming” lobby.
One of the most disturbing figures is the amount the EU paid the BBC — €6,100,987 (£4,854,039) a sum in addition to the €24.4m (£19.4) in grants the EU paid the BBC between 2007-2012.
Grants to the green anti-industrial lobby included multi-millions to Friends of the Earth €4,188,230 (£3,332,220), WWF €5,344,641 (£4,252,279) and the RSPB €3,802,544 (£3,024,327).
More, the European Commission has taken taxpayers’ money from across the EU member states to subsidise United Nations institutions to the tune of nearly €140 million (£111m), despite UN staff indulging ““in corruption, waste and abuse that carries no real penalty,” according to Claudia Rosett, UN expert at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington public policy institute…
The multi-millions in hand-outs have come to light because of the sharp-eyed research of EU historian and blogger Dr Richard North, who says “the database is a goldmine of information…once again it brings to light the huge amount of taxpayer funding going to unaccountable NGOs, and especially (but not exclusively) climate change advocacy groups.”
He calls particular attention to a new entrant on the listing, an organisation which has not received money from the European Commission before, the World Resources Institute (WRI), which has been given €1,500,000 (£1,192,527) for “designing the 2015 global climate change agreement.”…
Dr North’s research follows the WRI, an American organisation, through its establishment in Delaware, the state most favoured by corporations for its light taxes, to its lobbying in Washington, and through its vast international funding from government institutions across Europe, including $2,041,246 (£1,192,291) from Britain’s aid ministry, the Department for International Development.
His research goes on through a list of the WRI’s top 43 donors, including governments, corporates, charities and NGOS. Altogether these contribute $43,688,366 (£2,738,474), amounting to 85 per cent of the WRI’s 2013 revenue – yet the WRI is a private US charity…

These figures and the related data portray a frightening prospect of what we are up against in the fight to get the truth of global warming alarmism to the voting public. The WRI sounds like another in the long list of NGO`s and other self-interset groups who are paid off from both American and European governments with taxpayers money in order to continue to preach the false reality of CAGW that they do. Keep up the good work of highlighting this kind of information in order make us all aware.

9 July: UK Telegraph: Raziye Akkoc: Lord Lawson: BBC has banned me because of my climate change scepticism
Former chancellor accuses ‘Stalinist’ BBC of silencing debate about climate change after it bowed to complaints over his commments on Radio 4’s Today programme
Lord Lawson added: “However useful computer models may be, the one thing they cannot be is evidence. Computer climate models are simply conjectures.
“The fact is that, on this issue, the BBC has its own party line (indistinguishable form that of the Green Party) which it imposes with quasi-Stalinist thoroughness.”
However, Lord Lawson claimed “at no time has either the head of the Editorial Complaints Unit or anyone else from the BBC sought to get in touch with me about this”…

Although Lord Lawson said he did not support the ban on non-scientists discussing climate change issues, he argued it should be “even-handed”.
“They should also ban non-scientists such as Energy Secretary Ed Davey, Ed Miliband, Lord Deben (chairman of the Government’s Climate Advisory Committee), Lord Stern (former adviser to the Government on the Economics of Climate Change and Development) and all the others who are regularly invited to appear,” he wrote.

posted the 9 july piece on the “sabra lane” thread, but just want to document this farce here:

7 July: Ninemsn: Carbon tax likely to be scrapped in days
The government got its way after moving to suspend standing orders twice, eventually winning the crucial support of PUP and Senator Muir…

9 July: Sky News: Coalition fails on carbon tax repeal vote
The loss turned on the vote of Australian Motoring Enthusiast Party senator Ricky Muir who split from his Palmer United Party allies by voting with Labor and the Greens…
A vote on the repeal bills and non-government amendments may now be days away.

Pat I’m just floored by the behavior of Senator Muir, for a motoring enthusiast that wants to keep car manufacturing in Australia he sure doesn’t have a clue what a CARBON TAX is designed to target!

FFS Ricky now is not the time to be stuffing around playing power games with the ALP/Green twats that helped to cripple the industry you love and want to keep, please talk to Senator Madigan and get educated on restoring Australian industry and the CAGW scam, these people you sided with today are not your union work mates they are socialist scum that need to be erased from the political landscape of this country.

Stuff it I’m emailing this off to him, first one was obviously too subtle.

Ricky Muir is actually using the Carbon Tax as a bargaining chip. He will pass the legislation when it is re-presented to the Senate.

I suggest you read (conservative columnist) Nikki Savva’s article in The Australian today. Tony Abbott is probably an even bigger control freak and micromanager than Kevin Rudd.

In my own presentation at ICCC9, I mentioned Joanne Nova as a prominent person in the blogosphere who is doing the job the mainstream media is not doing, namely holding regulatory people and reporters accountable for claims about AGW being a settled science. My part starts at the 19:10 point in this video http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/49736025 (ignore my own senility moment after I start, I got back on track and mentioned JoNova near the end of my 12 minute bit).
