Two million pageviews

Well, well, well. Google Analytics clocked up 2 million pageviews for joannenova.com.au in the last 12 months:

  • 2,032,353 Pageviews
  • 340,000 unique visitors
  • coming from 199 countries*
  • and leaving 38,000 comments

(*If anyone has a friend in Chad, Niger, or Zaire, you could email them and we could bump that country tally up to 200. Similarly, I’ve bombed out in Turkmenistan and North Korea. I guess there are places where “climate change” is not even a question they would ask in phone surveys … if they had surveys, or I guess, phones. Those are lands where esoteric debates about carbon footprints are irrelevant.)

All up, around 3,000 visitors drop in each and every day, and it often spikes to 5,000 – 7,000 (many of the unique visitors visit more than once).

Just for comparison’s sake, Quadrant online announced it had one million plus page views per annum, back in September. Coincidentally Quadrant and I  both started out at about the same time, they with 156 supporters, and me with with one (thanks David. :-)).

Along the way lots of others have helped with the Tip Jar, some repeatedly, and I do so appreciate it. Even spare change. (If most readers gave 10 cents per view, I’d have a very decent salary :-).  I started a special thank you list of names, but where do I draw the line? Some people have been very generous, and sometimes a small donation from a person with six kids and not much to spare can be just as motivating. I decided instead to stick with personal emails. (Give me time, I will get my email list up to date!).

Behind the scenes I get help with references, ideas and information from people like Michael Hammer, George White, Tony Cox, Richard Courtney, William Kinninmonth, David Stockwell as well as Mark, Oggi, Curt, Jack, Thomas, Anne-Kit, Allen M, Graeme Y, Speedy, Janama, Tel, Roy, I can’t possibly thank everyone who has contributed to the site somehow, Christopher, Brian, Roy, Eddy, and I’ll get into trouble if I try… to commentors here and to those who take these ideas to far flung sites. Thank you all. Thanks to the unsung moderation heroes. Then there’s the global translation team … especially Jorn and Ralph, Ian (you see what I mean, I can’t stop, and I know I’m leaving out so many good names — please forgive me). It goes to show I guess just what a community effort it really is.

In odd moments I occasionally try thinking of ways to make this “sustainable” (mostly I wonder if I will ever master the art of the 200-word-post). It became a full time approach in the lead up to Copenhagen and I kept imagining it would slow down, and I would go back to other things… ha ha ha.

With our government becoming a Green Controlled Senate in July 2011, there’s no time off for sane Australians in the foreseeable future (though to stay sane, I might have to take time off ;-)). If you have a big spending egregiously wasteful idea, don’t send it to the Australian Parliament (most likely, they’re already onto it).

One of the benefits from investing so much time in this is the people I meet: the salt of the earth, honest-to-the-end altruists with integrity. The AGW scare is an excellent sieve. There are true gems, independent thinkers, determined spirits, ground breaking scientists. Good good people.

David and I have also been fortunate to have met and get to know quite a list of Senators and MLA’s, and a few notable business leaders, largely thanks to a couple of sympathetic influential local contacts. (Thanks Mark, Ron, and also thanks to the CIS.) Those events have been some of the highlights. Likewise — Heartland. There’s no other organisation quite like it.

I’ve said it before, when skepticism goes mainstream, I’ll miss that great filter…

It’s been a busy year. From the “about” page:

Jo Nova has been mentioned or referenced by The Australian [World wide web of doubt, Hot and bothered , Let’s have a debate, Aunty] , ForbesThe Spectator, Mark Steyn, Andrew Bolt [here and here], ABC (the Drum1, Drum2), The Science and Public Policy Institute, The Hawaii Reporter, James Delingpole of The Telegraph (and here and here too), Christopher Booker, and The Examiner, The West Australian. She’s been blamed for the collapse of the ETS and named in the Australian Parliament and the Oxfam report on skeptics. Jo did a five part debate with Dr Andrew Glikson, first through Quadrant Online, then at her own blog. The Wheeler Centre in Melbourne listed Jo Nova as the balancing counterpoint to the combined scientific weight of The UN and government departments. The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald tried to disparage her with an ad hominem. So did Clive Hamilton. Of course, Joanne has her own DeSmog Blog page.

Jo has been interviewed on The John Batchelor Show (NY) [1] [2] and with Michael Smith on 4BC and on Global Cooling Radio.

    Ms Nova:

    2 million+ views in a single year.
    Now that is success!
The ‘pudding’ has been ‘proved’in the ‘eating’.

Congratulations! You are a star (and you deserve to be).

And please do not forget the contributions of the trolls. Their silly attempts to displace science with scaremongering display the paucity of pro-AGW aguments for all to see.

And those daft contributions from trolls enable rebuttals from Eddy Aruda, CO2isNotEvil, Cohenite, etc. which display wit and erudition that provides entertainment for visitors to enjoy.

    congrats jo –
as someone who came late (post climategate) to your blog, i have been most impressed by your articles looking at BOM and NIWA statistics because they are close to home and focus on the kind of manipulation seen at GISS. btw, the following may be worth checking:

from andrew bolt’s blog, total denier of balwyn says:

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) spin doctors are at it again!
I was surprised to hear the widely broadcast news that although October was the wettest for 35 years, the annual rainfall for Melbourne was still well below annual averages!
I confirmed with a press contact that this release had actually come from the BOM.
Quite frankly I just didnt believe it.
So I calculated the rainfall for the year to date for the 6 local melbourne weather stations (Melbourne, Prahran, Flemington, Essendon, Preston and Bundoora). And guess what – rainfall for the 9 months ended 30 Oct was up by an average of 8% over an average of 71 years of rainfall records for the 6 stations!
So the BOM is wrong for the Melbourne metropolitan area.
So what about the catchments – I calculated that rainfall for 12 stations in 2010 was up by an average of more than 20% over an average of 67 years of records!
So who is putting out this nonsense, and where are the journalists checking the readily available records to see if the BOM are accurately reporting, as their charter requires them to do by law?
If I can calculate these figures in 30 min why cant someone in the press?

“…supporters, and me with with one (thanks David. ”

    No probs, Jo. He he

Actually, I’ve been a fan since February when I finally realised that there was an alternative to the great Global Warming mantra that I’d heard for years and years in the MSM.

With all the yack and cackle it is hard to understand how there is even an argument.

I posted this on WUWT the other day, and post it again here as I still haven’t got much in the way of answers:

    Now hang on, you lot!

Billions of dollars, quadrillions of man-hours, squadrillions of words, and there is still an argument over whether or not twelve man-made carbon dioxide molecules per one million molecules of air is catastrophically heating the atmosphere?
    Can this be for real?

Really, as just an ordinary bloke, I shouldn’t have to know that carbon dioxide absorbs long wave radiation, and re-emits it. Should I have to know that this re-radiating of heat by the CO2 molecule is isotropic and the heat can ping off in any direction including up?
Should I have to worry about whether the National databases holding temperature records around the globe are up to standard and that the publicised temperatures from same are honest?

Ice flows, polar bears, glaciers, water vapour, methane, ozone and a million other esoteric minutiae associated with climate should, unless one is keen on such things, merely exist on the fringes of one’s consciousness. Most people deal with facts. 1 kilogram equals 2.2046 pounds, E=MC2, for example. Radio propagation is proven by the fact that everyone’s cell phone magically receives information without a bundle of wires. We trust that the science is empirically demonstrated, and use our cell phones without having a clue how it works. How is it that one can’t say the same of climate science?

Why hasn’t the expenditure of billions of dollars, the endeavours of thousands of scientists, or the babble of millions of bloggers over the last three decades been able to pin the beast down so that ordinary folks like me can say, “Yep! We’re warming up through our careless production of CO2. We’d better do something before it’s too late!”

Well, it hasn’t, because it can’t.

And if I’ve got some facts wrong, well tough titty, as I’ve other things to do.

My congratulations as well JO, Like Pat above I found your site about the same time around climategate, then only by accident, first I just read the articles, not bothering to look at the comments. Now through the list of links posted by many of your regulars and to my wife’s great annoyance “the print outs I leave all over the house” I now feel more confident in myself when I call talk back radio to expose the corruption in the science and the message being delivered by the UN. Especially their chairman the loathsome Rajendra Kumar Pachauri.

Just as an aside its about time the spell checker recognised climategate, the least bulldust deserves is that spell checkers now recognised it as legitimate, after all it’s been 12 months in common use.

The non-productive types with time on their hands, have dominated the agenda across all Western democracies for too long. In the past people with real jobs and businesses to run simply haven’t the had time to get their voices heard.

These people may have harnessed the Internet first, but now thanks to people like Jo the rest of us can have our opinions heard and give each other moral support while having our morning coffee before we head off to work. I think we’re all a little bit surprised to find out that we actually outnumber the parasites by a significant margin.

    Congratulations Jo!,

Your work on this blog is a shining example of how the new media is so comprehensively more effective than the hacks we call journalists in this country.

Blogs such as yours are now a key component in any democratic community.

This is all extremely well deserved. To think it was around a year ago that Climategate broke. Of course, anyone in australia who relies on the lamestream media for their information probably still thinks it was just a bunch of nasty emails between scientists.

Congratulations. I can’t resist commenting on the positive reference to ‘Quadrant Online’, one of the most interesting holocaust denial sites I’ve looked at – it denies the genocide of the Tasmanian Aborigines. I totally reject its argument – but totally defend its right to free speech. I’d be interested to know what the creator of this site and commenters think about this argument, and its obvious consequences for free speech, the use/misuse of the term ‘denial’, and whether one should accept the dominant narrative on which holocausts one can deny, and which are beyond discussion.

Jo, you have earned everyone of the hits your site has received. You are an indefatigable writer whose wit and wisdom never ceases to both amaze and impress me. You have aided many in understanding the science behind the CAGW hypothesis and provided a forum for a free and fair exchange of ideas on a range of topics relating to climate change.

Your concern for the fate of the Thompsons typifies what I believe to be the core of your being, a genuine and sincere concern for people. You are one of the most tolerant hosts on the Internet. You have stirred the passion of many as has been evidenced by the voluminous sage and profound comments posted here by some of the keenest minds it has ever been my good fortune to be associated with. I am humbled by the regulars who post here.

When historians write of the demise of the great global warming scam I believe they will acknowledge what you did to stop the most insidious threat to freedom the world has ever witnessed.

I am looking forward to your ever increasing success at communicating the truth and I wish you nothing but the best.

BTW, thank you for allowing me to post here and for tolerating my occasional pushing of the envelop!

    Bulldust

Nice work Jo. All that work and to think you didn’t receive one petro-dollar for it. Its almost a shame that AGW will likely fade away slowly rather than go out with a bang. I think it will be a death of a thousand cuts that eventually forces the demise of the dismal coalition of the gulible.

On a different front I see there is a God-style climate game coming out soon:

    http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/offbeat/8240253/climate-computer-game-lets-you-decide-earths-fate/

Interesting that they allow nuclear as an option… I guess the game designers want to appear as if they are being balanced, despite basing the “data from real climate models.”

Just out of curiousity, because it was probably just poor journalism and/or editing, but how can a model be “real”? I thought the whole point of a model was that it was an abstraction or a representation and therefore not “real.”

    Ditto and kudos to you for the site Jo!. I think there are some specific reasons why its so sucessful. here’s my suggestions;

    – its updated reguarly with topical relevant subject matter
    – its easy to read, both in font size and literal clarity
    – its not overly santised, edited even if the message is contrary or misguided, etc.
    – there’s a core ‘folowing’ that can educate the readers

    Congratulations Jo and all involved

A little O/T here but “Australian Science” mag has a “humorous” article (behind a paywall) by James Risbey Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research CSIRO/BOM

    http://www.australasianscience.com.au/article/issue-november-2010/straw-men-climatology.html

Not worth paying for( I had access to a hard copy)but have a laugh if you get the opportunity. Some rib tickling lines:-
“Media coverage of the contrarian claims has presumably contributed to the declining levels of popular belief in the seriousness of the climate change issue” or

“The contrarian critique is mostly devoid of new content and lacks the usual quality control procedures that help produce substantive arguements.”

He has a go at Plimer and Lomberg and pats Monbiot and our own ABC Tony Jones on the back for examining the contrarian claims, but the line that really had me was:-

“The failure of contrarians to respond to scrutiny with improved hypotheses sets them apart from science in not correcting error, and undermines the credibility of their case.”

Why does a saying about a pot and a kettle spring to mind and with the use of contrarian so often I was begining to think he was a new character from the about to be filmed “Hobbit”

What you have achieved is remarkable. What sets your site apart from all others is not just the fact and editorial content, but the way you run the site. You have made it easy to leave comments and to format those comments in a readable way. This makes it easier for readers who come to your site, not just for those who want to leave comments. No matter how inane, you allow contrary views to be posted unlike virtually all pro AGW sites who frantically edit and moderate contrary content lest their readers get exposed to rational climate science. Even the touches you add to the site like the ‘preview’ feature and the individual icons make your site more usable and readable. All this without a team of people and financial backing! Congratulations!

[Shucks, you are all too nice to me. I wondered if people noticed all those little details… –JN]

I think this web site is popular because it has universal appeal, virtually every Western-aligned country has been influenced by the duplicity of a few [not surprisingly, originating from the UN].

As Richard Lindzen says, ordinary people can see what a sham this AGW stuff is, and it gives ordinary people a lot of reassurance that there are like-minded people such as Jo Anne and David Evans who can articulate the damage that acceptance of AGW rubbish brings on.

Jo Anne must be doing something right, noting how much effort global warmers expend to discredit Jo Anne – I’m envious, I don’t get that much attention

    Congratulations, Joanne.

I consider, skeptics such as you have already been vindicated by high authorities such as the Royal Society, who have acknowledged the uncertainties and admitted that debate is appropriate. This reverses the vilification by Rudd, Wong and others with their accusations that your dissent makes you somehow dishonest and irresponsible.

When this madness completely falls over, (and before the next one starts), I reckon even just 0.1% of the trillions saved should spread as ongoing educational grants to people like you who fought tooth and nail against a huge establishment, suffered abuse, lost income and risked their sanity for no reward other than to preserve integrity in science and our society generally. I don’t know how else one would define heroism.

And shame, shame on all the opportunists including the scientists, the rent-seekes and those who just remained silent in these times of need.

    Congratulations Jo,

    Positives:

    1. You express your chosen topics very clearly. I have complained about this before. 🙂

    2. You manage to attract “interesting minds”, many of whom feel comfortable in sharing their knowledge and experience, from a diverse range of fields – we all therefore learn something that we did not previously know. This is why I now realise that I know less than I previously thought I knew when I first visited this site. 🙂

    3. You are (mostly) tolerant of the trolls, some of whom are really quite amusing, and all of whom trigger comment and discussion, thus stimulating further knowledge transfer. I secretly suspect that some of the trolls are actually you, acting as a one-woman fifth column. 🙂

    4. And most important, you make us feel at home on this site. Excuse me, while I just kick my shoes off. 🙂

    Negatives:

    1. It is a pain being five time zones ahead of you, do you realise how late I have to stay up, just to get your latest post? Do you? 🙂

    Thank you.

p.s. I happen to know for a fact that your site is known (and presumably read) in the glorious Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea. I don’t know about Turkmenistan.

    Congratulations Ms. Nova!
Found your site through Mr. Watts site sometime back and enjoy your commentary very much (enough to keep coming back for more). Here’s to your continued success!

Side note: never been to North Korea but worked in Turkmenistan for a couple years (a few years back), unless things have changed much (which I doubt) internet was not available to the general populace, they allowed internet cafe’s for a few months once then shut them down. I was granted an account through my employer which was then issued to me by the Turkmen government. What limited access they granted was slow (dial up at 28.8) and filtered by the government (including constant attempts to break through my firewall). So it’s no wonder (unfortunately) that you have no hits from that corner of the world.

Jo, an old Dutch migrant in NZ who had become very wealthy told me once that it was all down to luck – “The harder I work, the luckier I get!”
Your site is one of a few favourites that I check out every day to find out what is actually going on in the world of climate and associated topics. Your writing is informed, accurate and reads like a good book and your rating is well deserved – both the posters and the trolls are also good reading, the latter are great entertainment.

    Congratulations Jo,

Late last year I was directed to your site by a work colleague who was aware of my AGW scepticism. Since then I have been a daily visitor who enjoys reading your articles together with the contributions of your mostly highly knowledgable and articulate bloggers (and even the odd troll who make for good sport!).

There are probably many good words to describe your skills but I like ‘prolific’ due to your ability to continuously update your site with relevant, easy to understand language.

Well deserved congratulations Jo. Your site is my daily fix.
Do I detect a note of triumphalism among some of your correspondents? This battle aint over yet. Journos, the big end of town, pollies, business, and most of the public still give credence to CAGW despite some waning of enthusiasm – much of the latter due to efforts like yours

I was indeed surprised to find that my South Korean students were being fad a heavy dose of global warming in their home country. They were hungry for facts and several have started a club to organize real science related to climate to send back home. They are bright kids and can analyze a graph much better, apparently, than anybody at the IPCC. They know what the stink test is.

On ya Jo, way ta go;-)…. ’tis only to be expected though. This is where the discernin’ Blog readers come to bask in common sense and clear thinking… It’s a G’damn’d jungle out there! 🙂

    Bernie Tranter: #58

    This battle aint over yet

You are absolutely right, Bernie. The best we can hope for is a logarithmic decay in enthusiasm from the greater population.

Those within the political “bubble” however, are a different fish. They have discovered a new way of “generating” revenue to subsidise their pet project du jour, and they are going to fight to the death to maintain that revenue stream.

In this they will be ably abetted buy all of the government departments, special units, think-tanks, and task forces, that have been set up to “meet the challenge of climate [insert today’s word]”, and the tens of thousands (or even hundreds of thousands) of jobs that go along with those organisations.

Let us also not forget the commercial enterprises that have come into existence to trade carbon credits, especially within the European Union, where all of the member states have been signed up, whether they agreed or not.

And then we have the criminal fraternity, who are never slow to recognise “a good little earner” when they see one. Schemes such as the CDM refrigerant scam in China, or the WWF using the (WWF designed) REDD scheme to receive tens of millions of dollars for “protecting” parts of the Brazilian virgin rain forest that could either never be milled, because of access difficulties, or which were already earmarked for “sustainable harvesting”. Those poor conservationists need your donations. 😉

So yes, you are right, but as the hit counters goes up, on sites like this one – what I call the “Rational Sites” – we slowly pick away at the symptoms of the problem.

But we don’t actually address the real problem; the government sanctioned use of psychological conditioning – propaganda – on the general population, to create one “crisis” after another, each of which is always “worse than we thought”.

This battle is not really about the climate (it gets on just fine on its own), and it is not really about science (which has its own history of ups and downs), it is about basic animalistic competition for supremacy between individuals, tribes and nations. It is about strength, cunning, aggression, and the concept that “I cannot win, unless you lose”.

Jo is winning by collecting clicks – it is a fantastic effort – I want to see her hit the 5 million per year mark, hopefully by the end of next year.

Congratulations Jo, well deserved and I admire your perseverance and your calm (relatively) when under fire. Sticking to rebuttals through science seems to do the trick.
As you know you get lots of ‘referrals’ from fellow expert bloggers which shows that they hold you in high regard. That must give you a little warm glow.
    Keep it up.
    Regards GW

    Rereke @ 61,

I heard on the radio this morning as I drove to the office that the U.S. Carbon Exchange is being shut down. I have no way to verify it until later. But perhaps the decay will be a little better than logarithmic.

It seems the Chicago Carbon Exchange was on the wrong side of cap and tax.

Jo. Having visitors from 199 countries is most impressive and has tremendous potential. Can I suggest a small project for those interested, which may be worth a separate thread? Google GISS Surface Temperature Analysis and go to Stations. A clickable world map is available which brings up stations in the selected area. People can do this for their own part of the world or, as a starting point I suggest they look up a list in the Appendix the late John L Daly provided to his excellent 2000 article “What’s Wrong With The Surface Record” at
http://www.john-daly.com/ges/surftmp/surftmp.htm. John identified many well maintained and operated stations with long unbroken records of temperature such as Valentia,Ireland; Tromo,Norway; Vostok,Antarctica; Cold Bay,Alaska; Eagle Pass,Texas; Ajan,Siberia; Kauai,Hawaii; Punta Arenas, Chile and many more.

In the light of dire statements by the likes of James Hansen and other AGW proponents, many will be amazed at the lack of any discernible global warming in the last 130 years over and above natural variability. Equally amazing is the quite dramatic downturn in temperature recorded over the last three to five years at many of the sites. The graphs tell a totally different story to the “official” gridded, standardised, homogenized and otherwise adjusted mish-mash presented to the gullible public !

If you have time Jo, check for yourself. Maybe you could reproduce a few here if it doesn’t breach any copyright. Cheers to all.

    Impressive.

Your sphere of influence on this graphic will have to be enlarged.

Wow. Just wow. Thank you all. That’s high praise: people writing letters, or becoming active. People noticing all those little details that I wondered if anyone thought anything about. I’m just finding a way to get the genius out of the giants and share it…

But boy o boy, there is so much left to do.

(I think I just go read those comments all again… :-))

What I heard was on the radio and (forgive me) I spent last night watching election returns. So I couldn’t go looking.

But, yes, that would be it. Death by being ignored — how appropriate.

We need a new term for that. Death-by-default, maybe?

    Congratulations Jo!
I rarely have anything worth adding to the discussions(I am severely out classed both technically and in the area of verbose virtuosity)but always know that any question I have about globalwarming/climate change/climate disrupion and most about corupt politics can be answered by perusing the pages of your wonderfully insightful blog.

Thankyou for your hard work and diligence.

Jo, you’re a beacon of light in a dark and crazy world. Your integrity shines through the government spin, the mindless trolls, the corrupted chequebook scientists and the poodle journalists. Thank you for being there. Wonderful work.
