Where would we be without the internet?

The Skeptics Handbook II was released on Nov 20. If you google the phrase “Skeptics Handbook II”, there are 19,200 hits. Even I am surprised. That is a very specific phrase.

Site traffic has been spectacular in the last two months. Thank you for your help.

For the full year of 2009:

Visitors:       238,435
Page views:  868,491
Comments:      11,852

For December: 66,000 visitors, 270,000 pageviews. About 3000 people each day.

To put this in perspective, New Scientist has 170,000 subscribers, but when I hit back at them I’m reaching 15,000 a week, and it’s salubrious company. Ex-IPCC reviewers, NASA-Apollo program people, DoE experts, Engineers in California (and Florida, and Norway, and Canada) Surgeons in Sydney, Lawyers in London and a whole host of independent thinkers and people who are searching for answers.

Thank you to all those who have helped to inform me, add research, or edit my work. Apologies if I don’t always manage to thank people, sometimes it’s because I’m swamped by the emails.

Thanks to all the people who emailed their political leaders, and just as much to those who emailed their friends. It’s sometimes more work and far more scary to send emails to people we know.

Happy New Year to everyone.

May the internet always be free…

UPDATE: Jan 5, 2010. Traffic hit an astonishing (and expensive) 280Gigabytes  in December!

A great new year to you Jo & all the other logical thinkers out there and may the main stream media start to report fairly & honestly although I fear this may be impossible.

    Happy New Year to everyone.
Those are very good stats. It shows that there rational people out there, not prepared to tow the ‘collective’ line. This is a great site, with very interesting contributions. (So much for the MSM).
Yes, may the INTERNET ALWAYS be FREE.
Free of Conroy and Government interference.

Thank you, Jo for having the courage to seek the truth. It would be so easy for most of us who frequent your site if AGW was real. Then we could be part of the “in” crowd. I am inspired by this site to continue searching for the truth no matter where it leads.

I wish everybody a fantastic New Year!

My personal example of how useful the internet can be:
A BBC presenter was discussing stories that didn’t get the coverage they deserved, and mentioned that the Northwest Passage is now open to shipping. I hadn’t heard about this before, but a few minutes of delving revealed that
    a) this story actually began more than two years ago – http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6995999.stm
and b) it’s not exactly unusual, let alone catastrophic. Quoting S Fred Singer from http://www.examiner.com/x-33398-LA-Public-Policy-Examiner~y2009m12d29-Climate-Change-101-Is-the-globe-warming

Some of our media expresses surprise that some northern shipping lanes are nearly ice free. They shouldn’t be shocked. Just a hundred years ago, Roald Amundsen navigated the Northwest Passage, above Canada, in a wooden boat, when no icebreakers existed. Baron Adolf Nordenskiöld sailed through the Northeast Passage, above Russia, in 1878. It’s really nothing new.

Oh yes, that’s the next big battle. Won’t somebody think of the children? Well I know that liberty is the most valuable gift anyone can leave to their children.

In the ever circling way of politics, the Greens are our friends on this particular issue. Senator Ludlam has confronted Conroy over censorship a number of times and Conroy tends to respond with rudeness (which is bone-headed given that Conroy actually needs Ludlam’s vote).

For head-exploding weirdness consider this… if the Greens had been willing to compromise and do deals they would have offered Internet censorship in exchange for an ETS legislation that does nothing for CO2 but puts a lot of legislation in place for tax collection and control of the energy supply. This would require that the Greens accept that AGW is a convenient political agenda, but they can’t accept that because they are true believers, and they can’t accept Internet censorship because the Internet has been so good to them getting their own anti-establishment message to their followers — inevitably sooner or later they would be censored too.

This would all sort itself out if the Greens were willing to be a bit rational about the screwed up science behind AGW and stop flogging the dead horse. There are PLENTY of other Green issues to follow up on and remain both a meaningful political force and have warm feelings about doing good for the world. This would require that the Greens beat down both their Gaia worshiping Luddite fairy lovers and knee-jerk “let me fix that for you” Socialists. Sadly those are the people providing most of the energy for the Green movement.

There should (in principle) be a systematic way for rational people to leverage
this sort of simple mindedness (once you get beyond the moral issue of exploiting an idiot for being an idiot).

Internet is the only hope left for truth, democracy and freedom.

I am not being dramatic. This is my experience as a citizen of India where these are being increasingly denied to us subtly. Something like Hitler’s salami tactics – swallow one slice at a time so that no one protests.

Like China, our government is depriving people of small freedoms quietly till the day they lose all their rights.

Forums like this blog protect the voice of reason which reminds us to stay awake.

Thank you Joanne and wishing everyone a great new year!

    Jo,

I can only say here publically what I said in recent email — I found you by accident when The Heartland Institute sent me a copy of your Skeptic’s Handbook. Its simplicity and concentration on the key point was convincing. I’ve learned how to deal with die-hard AGW cases from you. And thank you for that.

I’ve also learned from numerous others who post here. So thank you for the open forum.

And Last — I’m just small change among the really literate on the subject. So I should say thank you to everyone for putting up with me.

I’ve been stuck at home since mid November recovering from a back injury and that has allowed me the time to read, post (possibly to annoy some and for which I apologize). I hope to be getting back to work some time this month and I’ll have less time to look in again. And frankly, I’ll miss this interaction. This is a place where there is some real freedom of speech (even sometimes getting off topic without being squelched).

Dear Joanne, we are distributing within our network your homepage and the German edition of your book. If someone is asking and does having any doubts or is less informed about the climate affairs, your book is the answer to help him to understand. I have to explain who I am and who we are. Have a look on to these homepages. http://www.klimamanifest-von-heiligenroth.de, (translated in to 8 languages) http://www.der-teuflische-staat.de (only in German it means “the devilish state” this book is written by me) we have founded a new party last year, http://www.parteidervernunft.eu it means: “party of good sense” (some articles in English) and we have a very close relationship with EIKE. I would like to meet you, if possible. From 25.Feb to 15.Feb, I will be in Australia. (In Melbourne and Adelaide) If I could contact you it would be very great, maybe you can send me the phone number and/or your e-mail address. I would be very happy to hear from you. I wish you all the best and a lot of power for this new year
    Best regards
    Dieter

    Dieter,
That’s high praise indeed. Thanks. I do like hearing stories of how the Handbooks are used. I can’t ask more…

I too would like to meet you, even though Adelaide is the closest city to Perth, its 2,700 km away and 3 or 4 days driving. Delighted to hear you are making it this far around the world. I’m sure you’ll enjoy our weather (especially if you like it warm).
